A RELENTLESS SEARCH FOR
PERFECTION
There is a photograph in the Disney archives of Walt and ten of his animators standing around a studio table. In the middle of the table are five live penguins. The bírds are all
turned toward Walt Disney as if they know where their next meal is coming ftom. This arresting and charming image perfectly captures so much of the Disney ethos and rnagic-the element of surprise, the embrace of the anirnal kingdom, and always, the relentless search for perfection.
Disney, who was dete¡mined to exceed customers' expectations, was dissatisfied with the movements of his animated movie animals. They were good, but they weren't perfect. Up until that time, his animators had relied on photographic stills or movie clips to give them the models for their figures. It was clear to Walt that the anir¡ators could do better if they were able to copy the real thing--ergo. the penguins.
"How can we do better?" is the question Walt Disnev asked at everv turn. But then complacency is unnatural to the perfectionist.
He strove continuallv to improve the quality of his products. "Whenever I ride an attraction," he once said, "l'm thinking of what's wrong with the thing and asking miself how can it be improved."
The story is told that after Disneyland was already up and running, the boss stopped in to take a ride on the Jungle Cruise attraction. He emerged furious. The ride was advertised as taking seven minutes, but he had timed it at only four-and-a-half minutes. The very idea that a guest might be shortchanged was antithetical to the Disnev culture and to Walts vision of quality: he ordered the ride lengthened immediately. Moreover, he made it clear that carelessness toward details would not be tolerated, for such an attitude might cause guests to start doubting Disney's trustworthiness, the heart and soul of his management philosophv and personal credo.
Meticulous attention to detail is also characteristic of the Disney animated films. In Snow White, for example, viewers don't see drops of water just dripping from a bar of soap, in itself an unusual level of detail in anirnated films. Instead, they see glistening bubbles that actually twinkle in the candlelight.

Coca-Cola, fizzing happily into its second century, is about as inessential as you can get. Little more than sugar water pumped up with a little carbon dioxide, the product bosasts nearly every superlative in business: the word's most widely distributed and most famous product, with a brand name so powerful it dominates almost every consumer survey. Coca-Cola, in fact, may be the world's most widely understood word.
When Asa Candler incorporated the company in 1892, he tried to capitalize it al $100,000, hustiling $100 shares to raise the dough. He issued just over 500 shares, mostly to himself, but his enterprise took off so quickly that it turned out he didn't even need the money. Today, a single shacre of that 1892 stock woud be worth $2.5 billion.
It would appear, then, that the managers at Coca-Cola must be well schooled in turning a profit. Indeed, a remarkably consistent vision has permeated the firm since Coca-Cola was first invented by that gentle morphine-addicted genius, John Pemberton. He considered his drink an elixir of life, a nerve tonic to cure the ills of man. After Pemberton's death in 1888, Asa Candler carried on that tradition of fanatical belief in his product, as did Robert W. Woodruff, "The Boss," after him. More recently, current CEO Roberto Goizueta has shown himself to be of the same missionary stripe, suggesting that every modern home may soon have a third faucet to dispense ice-cold Coca-Cola.
What lessons can the modern business derive from the Coca-Cola saga? Most are simple and seemingly obvious, such as those dispensed by The Boss, but Coca-Cola illustrates them dramatically. Following are 30 time-tested management lessons, distilled from the company's convoluted history.
1 Sell a good product. And if it contains a small dose of two addictive drugs, all the better. The product doesn't have to talk or fly, but it does have to perform some useful, universally appreciated function. Coca-Cola tastes pretty good, once you get used to it (as the international managers know, Coke is an acquired taste); it tickles the nostrils; it quenches thirst; it produces a little caffeine lift. Some people think (following inventor John Pemberton) that it cures headaches, hangovers and stomachaches, and teenagers still achieve a cheap, if illusory, high by chugging it with a couple of aspirin. Alas, it no longer contains a smidgeon of cocaine, but it's still a good product.

2 Believe in your product. And I don't just mean an intellectual exercise here. Make your product an icon and your job a religious vocation. Instill in employees the notion that this is the finest product on earth, and they are working for the best company around. Your salespeople shoud be missionaries, not mere paid hacks. In the 1920s, Robert Woodruff summoned his entire sales staff and stunned them by announcing that they were all fired. The following day, he rehired them for a "new" service department. He informed them that they were no longer "salesmen,", because no one needed to be sold on the virtues o Coca-Cola any more. No, they were only "servicemen" who were there to help assure that the soda fountain sold a perfectly mixed ice-cold Coke.
