In 1933 the first of a new generation of Mercedes-Benz cars left the Untertürkheim factory. The Mercedes-Benz 380 offered a fully independent suspension chassis with coil springs. Power came from a single overhead camshaft supercharged straight eight engine displacing 3,820cc. These impressive specifications, however, proved less than a match for the elaborate, solidly-built coachwork Mercedes-Benz owners preferred and gave disappointing performance. So disappointing, in fact, that only 154 cars were built before production ended barely a year after the model’s introduction. | Translation - German
1933 verließ eine neue Generation von Mercedes-Benz Fahrzeugen die Fertigungsanlagen in Untertürkheim. Der Mercedes-Benz 380 bot einen Kasten-Niederrahmen mit Schraubenfeder-Aufhängung. Angetrieben wurde er von einem kompressorgeladenen Achtzylinder-Motor mit einer obenliegenden Nockenwelle und 3820 ccm. Diese beeindruckenden technischen Daten jedoch passten nicht zum ausgefeilten, solide ausgeführten Aufbau, den Mercedes-Benz-Fahrer vorzogen und führten nur zu enttäuschende Fahrleistungen. Tatsächlich war die Leistung so enttäuschend, dass bis zur Einstellung der Produktion kaum ein Jahr nach der Modelleinführung nur 154 Fahrzeuge gefertigt wurden. |
