Οι “παράμετροι διεπαφής” και οι σχετικές “περιπτώσεις διεπαφών”, με βάση την αναφορά που γίνεται σ’ αυτές, μπορούν να διακριθούν σε τρεις κατηγορίες :
• 1ου επιπέδου: Οι τιμές των παραμέτρων αυτών ορίζονται σαφώς, είτε στις ίδιες τις προδιαγραφές είτε από διεθνή πρότυπα
• 2ου επιπέδου: Οι τιμές των παραμέτρων αυτών εξαρτώνται από ειδικές συνθήκες, όπως από την κατηγορία του σιδηροδρομικού συστήματος (αστικό, προαστιακό, υπεραστικό υψηλών και συμβατικών ταχυτήτων), τις τοπικές κλιματολογικές συνθήκες του έργου, τις ειδικές απαιτήσεις του διαχειριστή του έργου κλπ, όμως τελικά ορίζονται σαφώς στα τεύχη δημοπράτησης ενός έργου
• 3ου επιπέδου: Οι τιμές των παραμέτρων αυτών δεν ορίζονται στα τεύχη των προδιαγραφών ούτε καθορίζονται από πρότυπα .Αναφέρεται ωστόσο στα τεύχη δημοπράτησης ότι η επιλογή των τιμών τους επαφίεται στον κατασκευαστή του έργου/ προμηθευτή του τροχαίου υλικού
Τέλος υπάρχουν “παράμετροι διεπαφής” που δεν περιλαμβάνονται στις προδιαγραφές του έργου είτε από παράλειψη, είτε γιατί δεν συνηθίζεται στη διεθνή πρακτική, είτε τέλος από μη γνώση αυτών που συνέταξαν τις προδιαγραφές . Οι παράμετροι αυτές μπορούν να χαρακτηρισθούν σαν 4ου επιπέδου

Depending on the reference made to the “interface parameters” and to the relevant “interface cases”, these can be divided into three categories:
• 1st level: the values of the parameters are clearly defined, either in the specifications or by international standards
• 2nd level: the values of these parameters depend on special conditions, such as the category of the railway system (urban, suburban, interurban high and conventional speed), the local climatologic conditions of the project, the special requirements of the project manager, etc. Yet, they are finally clearly defined in the tender documents of a project
• 3rd level: The values of the parameters are neither defined in the specification documents nor in the standards. It is however mentioned in the tender documents that the selection of the said values depends on the project constructor / rolling stock supplier
Finally, there are “interface parameters” that are not included in the project’s specifications either by omission or because it is not usual international practice or, finally, due to the lack of knowledge of the writers of the specifications. Such parameters may be characterized as 4th level parameters
