One of Scotland's most historic and venerated sites, Iona Abbey is an important Christian centre. It was on the island of Iona in about 563AD that St Columba and twelve other monks from Ireland established a monastery. This celtic church soon became a respected seat of learning. The monks compiled a great library of illuminated manuscripts and are credited with the creation here of the famous Book of Kells.
The island suffered from Viking raids, the worst being that of 806 when 68 monks were massacred on the sands of Martyrs Bay. In 1263, Reginald, son of Somerled, Lord of the Isles, established an Augustinian nunnery and a Benedictine monastery here.
Some three hundred years later during the Reformation, both nunnery and abbey were ransacked and all but three of the island's 360 crosses destroyed.
In ruins for over 400 years, the abbey was restored and the cloisters rebuilt at the beginning of the last century.
St Oran's Chapel to the south of the abbey dates from the 12th century. It stands at the centre of Reilig Odhrain, the sacred burial ground, said to contain the remains of sixty kings of Norway, Ireland, France and Scotland.

Die Abtei auf Iona ist eine der historischsten und meist verehrtesten Orte Schottlands und zugleich ein wichtiges christliches Zentrum. Im Jahre 563 n.Chr. gründete St Colomba zusammen mit zwölf irischen Mönchen ein Kloster auf der Insel Iona. Diese keltische Kirche wurde schnell zu einem anerkannten Lehrzentrum. Die Mönche erstellten eine große Bücherei von illuminierten Manuskripten und man geht auch davon aus, dass sie das berühmte Book of Kells erschaffen haben.
Die Insel wurde immer wieder von Wikingern überfallen. Der schlimmst Angriff fand im Jahre 806 statt, als 68 Mönche am Strand von Martyrs Bay regelrecht hingerichtet wurden. Im Jahre1263 gründete Reginald, der Sohn von Somerled, dem Lord der Inseln, ein Nonnenkloster der Augustinerinnen und ein Benediktinerkloster.
Ungefähr dreihundert Jahre später während der Reformation wurden beide Klöster geplündert und alle 360 Kreuze auf der Insel zerstört.
Zu Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts wurden die 400 Jahre alten Ruinen restauriert und die Klöster wieder aufgebaut.
Die St. Oran Kapelle im Süden der Abtei geht auf das 12. Jahrhundert zurück. Sie steht im Zentrum von Reilig Odhrain, der heilige Friedhof, von dem man sagt, dass dort die Gebeine von 60 Königen von Norwegen, Irland, Frankreich und Schottland liegen.
