From 1994 to 1996, Dr. Wehrle served as Special Adviser on Post-Conflict Situation to the OSCE High Commissioner and as Legal Adviser on institutional reforms in the transition countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union at the UN in Vienna and then at the OECD in Paris from 1996 to 1998. Since 1999, he has been Co-ordinator of Anti-Corruption Initiatives at the OECD, responsible for
co-ordination of the Stability Pact Anti-Corruption Initiative for South Eastern Europe and the ADB OECD Anti-Corruption Initiative for Asia and the Pacific, as well as the monitoring of the implementation of the OECD Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions by signatory countries.
Justice Markel began his judicial career in 1966 as a judge of a local court before becoming a judge of the Juvenile Court of Vienna, a position he held until 1985 when he was appointed to the Court of Appeal for the Region of Vienna. Four years later Justice Markel was elevated to the Supreme Court of Austria, where he serves as a Presiding Justice (chairman of a section) since 1999. Justice Markel has also been a leading member of the Association of Austrian Judges since 1973, serving as the association’s press spokesman from 1973 to 1982 and as President from 1983 to 1992. In 1996, Justice Markel was elected Vice-President of the International Association of Judges and in 2003 was elected President of the Association. In addition, from 1998 to 2003, Justice Markel also served as President of the European Association of Judges.
