This assessment may prove to be quite insightful when examining the tourism effects of fans attending sports events. As Faulkner, Tideswell, and Weston (1998) postulated before the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, most international tourists attending the Games would be '' sport junkies'' interested in little else besides sports. One of the challenges in understanding sport tourism and traveling fans might be to recognize that for many fans, their primary motivation is to watch the sporting competition and little else. Toaddress this challenge it might be necessary to segment fans by their length of stay within the community, as found by Nogawa, Yamguchi, and Hagi (1996) who studied a sport tourism event in Japan. They found that sport excursionists, participants who stay less than 24 h at a destination, are less likely than sport tourists (those who stay overnight), to engage in regular tourist activities such as sightseeing. In another study on active sport tourism in Key West, Florida, Green and Chalip (1998) pointed to the need to understand the subculture of the fans and participants in order to assess what they want from an event and the possibilities of enticing them to do other things in the host community.
The purpose of this two-part study was (a) to investigate the tourism-related behaviors of fans traveling from outside of Alachua County, Florida (USA) to follow the University of Florida 's football team (the Gators); and (b) to investigate their fan related behaviors, specifically, their rituals and practices pertaining to following the Gators, and the meanings associated with being a Gator fan (Gibson et al., 2001). This paper focused on the sport tourism related behaviors of the fans and suggests ways in which small communities such as Gainesville, Florida can leverage the tourism related benefits associated with college sports.

Loonie hits 30-year high at 92 cents US
The Canadian dollar's march past 92 cents US should mean cheaper prices for everything from out-of-country trips to credit, to fruits to wine -- even gasoline. Maybe even hockey tickets.
"Basically, the value of our dollar globally is going up -- and our purchasing power is going up. That's very good news," said Bank of Nova Scotia chief economist Warren Jestin, in Calgary on Wednesday.
"The strength of the currency is an indication of underlying well-being."
The loonie closed Wednesday at a 30-year high of 92.41 cents US, up more than three-tenths of cent from Tuesday. That's a stunning increase of nearly nine per cent since the Canadian dollar closed below 85 cents US on March 19.
The last time the Canadian dollar was at this level -- October 1977 -- disco was king.
"It's remarkable," said University of Calgary economist Frank Atkins.
"It's moving much more than I thought it would. With the currency markets there is a bandwagon effect."
The higher dollar means lower gasoline prices, according to figures released by Statistics Canada, but it means lower oil and gas royalties for the province and higher costs for the oil patch.
In April, Canadian pump prices were slightly lower than a year before, but in the U.S. they were more than 10 per cent higher. Since 2003, when the loonie began to take off, Canadian gas prices have risen by about 50 per cent, while in the U.S. they have almost doubled.
Imported goods like wine, fruits and vegetables, foodstuffs and manufactured products should all be cheaper as the newly bulked-up loonie purchases more.
Investors are keen on the Canadian buck because of Canada's strong economy based on surging exports of increasingly valuable commodities such as oil -- along with expectations Canadian interest rates may rise while those in the U.S. fall.
"Consumers should care, because it's going to make anything they import from the United States relatively less expensive and we import a lot of consumer goods, a lot of fruits and vegetables and a lot of food items," said Todd Hirsch, senior economist with ATB Financial. "It's also good for Canadian businesses that need to import equipment and machinery."
Calgary travel agents say the increased value of the loonie is likely to boost interest in trips to the U.S. this summer and next winter, along with U.S.,-dollar priced vacations and cruises although activity right now -- low season -- is quiet.
"We haven't felt it yet, but if the dollar stays up we will be really busy in August when people start to book for the winter," said Myrna Contreras of Travel Choice at Southcentre mall. "It should be very busy."
Along with a strong Canadian economy, a surge of acquisitions of and offers for, Canadian firms is pushing up the demand for the Canadian dollars that are needed to buy them.
And borrowing costs should stay low or go even lower. Less expensive import prices lower inflation, taking pressure of the Bank of Canada to raise rates.
Even the costs behind hockey tickets benefit from a stronger Canadian currency, as U.S.-dollar NHL player salaries become more affordable the stronger the loonie becomes.
"A positive fluctuation in the Canadian dollar is beneficial to us," said Calgary Flames president Ken King Wednesday. "But it's impossible for us to quantify until such time as we know the rate when we are making payroll in U.S. currency."
However, the high-flying currency also means a loss of millions of dollars in oil and gas royalties for the provincial government, lower revenue for Alberta's key oil and gas sector and it makes exporters, particularly manufacturers, less competitive in world markets.
In its April 19 budget, the Alberta government warned a stronger-than-expected Canadian dollar could negatively affect exports and economic growth, including slowing down oil and gas exploration. For every penny the Canadian dollar climbs, on a full year basis, the province's royalty revenue drops by $123 million, said Alberta Energy spokesman Jason Chance.
Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers vice-president Greg Stringham said smaller conventional oil and gas producers are the firms that will feel the effect of a rising dollar the most, but over the longer term it could also have an impact on larger projects, including multi-billion dollar oilsands projects.
"It's an effective lower price for the commodity that we sell, whether it be oil or gas -- and that's lower revenue," said Stringham.

The gasoline industry pockets millions of dollars a day by gouging consumers, according to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, which has launched a new website to help drivers figure out just how badly they are faring at the pumps.
The online "gasoline price gouge meter" allows users to compare the retail price of gas in various Canadian cities with what it should cost to fill up according to the CCPA's calculations.
By visiting www.gasgouge.ca, drivers can type in what they paid for gas that day and with the click of the mouse they will be told what the price should have been and how much profit their over-paying generated for the gas industry. (The calculation takes into account normal profit margins.)
For example, if a driver in Ottawa paid $1.02 per litre on Thursday, he or she paid 14.3 cents too much, the website claims.
"With today's crude oil price of $61.80 USD per barrel and the U.S. dollar at $1.11 CAD, the price of regular unleaded gasoline in Ottawa should be 87.7 cents per litre at normal profit margins," the site explains. "At a price of $1.02 per litre, you are paying 14.3 cents per litre in pure excess profit. Across Canada, an extra margin of 14.3 cents per litre generates an additional profit of 14.3 million dollars per day."
The online gas gouge meter can make the calculations for Canadians in 20 cities.
A paper on gas prices released Thursday by the CCPA says that on May 8, drivers in Canada were gouged anywhere from 14 to 27 cents, depending on the city, and those extra cents are straight profit for the industry.
The CCPA says drivers in Toronto for example were gouged by 15 cents, in Edmonton by 18 cents, in Vancouver drivers paid 27 cents too much and in Halifax they paid 19 extra cents.
"At the beginning of May, the excess profit amounts to $16 to $21 million per day, just for gasoline," the report said.
The explanations offered by the industry for high prices at the pumps range from the plausible to the ridiculous, the CCPA states, and often the explanations are little more than "after-the-fact rationalizations for the price-gouging opportunities seized by the oil industry, or noise introduced into the discussion to distract attention from what is really going on."
