I generally request a sample of the translation in order to determine the degree of complexity in the required text before committing myself to a price.
Of course most clients would like the translation "word-perfect + yesterday + bargain-basement prices", but all will agree that accuracy of text & fidelity to style are corners not worth cutting. As in most walks of life, "cheap turns out expensive in the long run".
