Ma 39 lat. Urodził się w Kobe, ale od już prawie 15 lat mieszka w Polsce. Osiadł w Oświęcimiu – sennym miasteczku na południu kraju, któremu II wojna światowa przyniosła mroczną sławę miejsca zagłady 1,3 miliona ludzi, zamordowanych przez nazistów w tutejszym obozie koncentracyjnym. Takeshi Nakatani is 39 years old. He was born in Kobe, but has lived in Poland for almost fifteen years. He decided to settle in Oświęcim [pronounced Oshvenchin] – a small sleepy town in the south of Poland, which became infamous during World War II as the focal point for the Nazi Holocaust. The town witnessed the murder of 1.3 million people in the Auschwitz death and concentration camp. Nakatani is the only foreign guide in this terrifying place. Today the concentration camp is now a museum enveloped in an eerie silence. The carefully maintained gravel walkways are covered in lush greenery; the camp blocks, which once were packed with thousands of starving and dying prisoners are now empty and filled with the occasional embarrassed footfall of passing tourists. Without a healthy dose of history, it is almost impossible to imagine that this place once staged the most horrific human atrocities of 20th century Europe.

Today around a few thousand people live and work in the zone. Some of these people have decided to resettle and illegally move back to the abandoned villages in the area, the rest account for workers responsible for servicing the now obsolete nuclear power station. According to scientific reports, there remains a small area in the zone, 1km squared, which is still highly contaminated. The rest of the zone, is therefore fit for resettlement.
In recent years, there have been reports in the media that have contradicted the view that the exclusion zone is a wasteland laid barren by radioactive contamination, home to mutants and the suchlike but that the zone has become a natural paradise in which all forms of wildlife has been free to richly develop and grow. The zone is home to animals like the European bison, Przewalski’s horse, wolves and other endangered species such as the black stork and white eagle. The wild boar population is approximately 10-15 greater than outside the zone. “The greatest catastrophe in the history of nuclear energy has turned out to be less of a threat to the natural environment than the presence of man,” according to Professor Robert Baker of Texas Technical University in “American Scientist”.
From 1994, the America scholar has been researching the effects of radioactive contamination on living organisms in the Chernobyl Zone. Together with his colleagues, he has visited the zone as many as fifteen times. To begin with, he was convinced that the fall-out had an extremely negative effect on the plants and animals in the area. During his first expedition there, he went to the so-called “red forest”, a small area in close vicinity to the power station. It got its name from the colour of the pine trees which had died from high doses of radiation.

Problematyka ochrony danych osobowych pracownika zaczęła pojawiać się w opracowaniach popularyzatorskich wraz z wejściem w życie ustawy z dnia 29 sierpnia 1997 r. o ochronie danych osobowych . W opracowaniach naukowych rozważania na temat konieczności zapewnienia pracownikom ochrony sfery prywatnej były prowadzone w Polsce znacznie wcześniej. Wystarczy przywołać tu podręczniki profesora Macieja Święcickiego z 1968 r. , by stwierdzić jak dawno i w jak odmiennych warunkach ustrojowych nauka polskiego prawa pracy widziała już ten problem . Jest jednak niewątpliwą zasługą powołanej ustawy i działającego z jej upoważnienia Generalnego Inspektora Ochrony danych Osobowych (GIODO), że problematyka ta została doceniona i jest stale obecna w naszym życiu społecznym i gospodarczym. The issues surrounding the protection of personal data began to appear in popularising studies together with the introduction of the Act on Protection of Personal Data on the 29th August 1997. Scholarly studies deliberating the issue of the need to guarantee employees a level of protection of their private domain were undertaken in Poland a great deal earlier. It is enough to mention the textbooks of Professor Maciej Święcicki from 1968 to see how long ago and in what kind of differing political climate Polish scholarly work on Labour Law took place and how the problem was tackled . W polskim systemie prawnym funkcjonuje zarówno prawo do informacji jak i prawo do ochrony danych osobowych. Pierwsze z nich wynika wyraźnie z art. 61 Konstytucji RP z dnia 2 kwietnia 1997r. oraz z ustawy z dnia 6 września 2001 r. o dostępie do informacji publicznej (powoływanej dalej jako udip) . The right to information as well as the right for the protection of personal data both function in the Polish legal system. The former is a direct result of Article 61 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland from the 2nd April 1997 as well as the Act on the Access to Public Information of the 6th September 2001 (hereafter AAPI). One can find the basis of the former right in Article 51 of the Constitution as well as in the Act on Protection of Personal Data (hereafter APPD). There are variety of legal relations concerning these rights that overlap, furthermore, there are also a number of legal conflicts that result in their interaction. An analogous situation can be found in the legal systems of other states, although legislators in other countries use different solutions to solve these conflicts including organisational solutions. Some European states have created personal data protection authorities whose job it is also to protect one’s right to access of information. These kinds of regulations have been adopted in, for example, Hungary where a Parliamentary Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information has been created and also in some German Lande. In Berlin there is a Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information and in Brandenburg a Commissioner for Data Protection and Access to Information operates. Inaczej mówiąc, posługiwanie się taką czy inną techniką utrwalania danych (…) nie przesądza samo przez się o legalności albo nielegalności tego utrwalania (przetwarzania). The Supreme Administrative Court in a ruling of the 19th December 2001, II SA 2869/00, ONSA 2003, No. 1, 29 noted significant pointers with regards to this issue claiming that the “collection of personal data through the copying of forms of ID is a technical issue which is immaterial to the employer rationing within the Act on the Protection of Personal Data the processing of this type of data. In other words, the use of this type of technique of data storage… does not in itself determine the legality or illegality of this storage (processing). For this kind of assessment, the following have crucial meaning: the legal foundation for data processing (Article 23 of the Act), the type of data processed (Article 27) as well as the limitations of the processing (Article 26 (1), point 3). In the first week of October 2005, 300 citizens of the Russian Federation applied for political asylum in Poland. They were all refugees from Chechnya, a republic in North Caucasus, which has been plunged in war for over ten years. In the ‘90s, Poland had not experienced the problem of refugees on a great scale. Za stojącą obok na półce Kroplę Beskidu, produkowaną przez Coca-Colę, trzeba zapłacić 1,83 zł. Waniliowe lody można kupić w cenie 1,99 zł za litr, podobne, ale z logo Zielonej Budki, są kilkakrotnie droższe. Papierowe ręczniki Velvetu to wydatek 2,85 zł, podczas gdy w sieci Leader Price na ręczniki wydamy niewiele ponad złotówkę. Za tak niską cenę nie można spodziewać się fajerwerków - produkty mają mało atrakcyjne opakowanie, często też ich jakość pozostawia wiele do życzenia. Potwierdzają to badania Inspekcji Handlowej, która niedawno wzięła pod lupę tanią żywność w sieciach sklepowych: Biedronka, Champion, Elea, Leader Price, Real, Lidl, Tesco, Ahold. Okazało się, że jedna czwarta wyrobów pod prywatną etykietą miała zaniżoną jakość w stosunku do informacji na opakowaniu. Najgorzej wypadły produkty mleczne - co trzeci miał wady - oraz mięsne - tu problemy z jakością miało grubo ponad 20 proc. wyrobów. Np. w wędzonkach stwierdzono "smak kwaskowy, występowanie skupisk galarety, gumowatą konsystencję, wyciek soku". Own brands which are called private labels by some expert are taking hold of the market with lightning speed. Even though the full range of these products appeared on our shelves only a few years ago, now every eighth product s an own brand, according to data from analysts from Gfk Polonia.
Supermarket chains sell above all milk, mineral water, paper towels, crisps and ice cream under their own private brands. More rarely do we see baby food or even food for cats or dogs. “These are areas of the market where the consumer most carefully looks at the quality of the brand identifies in concern for his or her loved ones,” explains Aleksander Krzyżowski of the Polish Association of Branded Products – “ProMarka”.
Own brands lure customers primarily with their low prices. As an example: a half litre bottle of mineral water sold by a hypermarket own brand costs PLN0.49. For the bottle of Kropla Beskidu standing next to it on the market shelf, which is produced by Coca-Cola you will have to pay PLN1.83. Own brand vanilla ice cream costs PLN1.99 per litre whereas if it has the logo of Zielona Budka on it you will pay a few times more. Velvet paper towels cost PLN2.84 whereas in Leader Price stores you will have to pay a little over PLN1. For such low prices, there is no use expecting the extraordinary – the products have unattractive packaging and their quality leave a lot to be desired. This is supported by research by the Trade Inspectorate, which recently took a good look at cheap food in the supermarket and discount chains of: Biedronka, Champion, Elea, Leader Price, Real, Lidl, Tesco and Ahold. They found that a quarter of own brand products were of decidedly lower quality than was advertised on the label. Milk products faired the worst – a third were deemed ‘defective’. Meat products were also well below standard with 20 percent having ‘problems’. For example, smoked meats had a, “acidic taste, rubbery texture, too much jelly and often were too watery”. The cheeses were, “too crumbly, chalky; the smell and taste was bitter and not up to standard”. |

Raf Uzar
I've been working in translation and linguistics now for over 12 years but I began my 'education' just after being born. Why? How? My father was born of Polish parents in Uganda and later moved to England. My mother was born in Poland. The two met in England and, hey presto, I was born. I'm allegedly bilingual and would like to think that I'm bicultural also. ;-)
Education
I studied at Lancaster University and finished with an honours degree in Linguistics and English Language, I then did an MA in English Philology at Łódź University in Poland and also began a PhD (corpus tools for translation) which I'm still working on.
Career
I began my multicultural work in Japan where I taught English. I later moved to Łódź, Poland and worked at Łódź University where I specialised in corpus linguistics and translation and helped set up Poland's first ever corpus project - The PELCRA project. After working in Łódź for several years teaching corpus linguistics, translation, interpreting and several other courses I decided to change things a little and moved to the capital city Warsaw. I now train translators and interpreters at Warsaw's School of Social Psychology and the University of Warsaw. I am chief editor and lead translator for Polish News Bulletin - Legal Supplement and also work on Polish National Radio - Radio Bis. | |
