I am a freelance Spanish>English translator and native English speaker resident in Spain. Since I registered as a full time translator in 2008, I have collaborated with more than 20 different Spanish and UK-based agencies, providing translations for more than 100 end clients. I have also worked for several private clients.
The majority of the documents I have translated fall into the general category of business, finance and management. I have experience of collaborating on several large and/or ongoing projects, of which the following serve as examples (names of agencies and end clients not given for reasons of confidentiality):
- a whole range of projects for a major global bank based in Spain, including management presentations, internal correspondence, service level agreements, financial news articles for internal publications, and various documents relating to the bank’s university funding and sports sponsorship activities (300,000+ words since July 2010)
- calls for tenders and related documents produced by an important Latin American government institution on the subject of customs administration, for a UK-based client (c. 50,000 words);
- various policy documents for a major Spanish medical insurance company (c. 100,000 words);
- various documents on debt securities for an important Spanish public institution;
- various bid documents for a consortium of Catalan Universities;
- part of an audit report on a Spanish public institution, related to the European Common Agricultural Policy, for a UK-based client (c. 23,000 words);
- the ten year buildings insurance policy documents of a Spanish insurance company (c. 27,000 words);
- annual accounts and reports for two Spanish companies.
Apart from business, finance and management, I have substantial experience of translating across a wide range of subjects including construction, development, education, forestry, food, gastronomy, renewable energy and many others besides.
I have also translated a number of academic articles, drawing on my experience as a former University lecturer in both humanities and social science subjects. These have included:
- a discussion of the concept of “asymmetric conflict” relating to the war in Iraq;
- a comparison of the work of two postmodernist sculptors, one Basque, one American;
- an analysis of cultural identity in the work of a major Basque sculptor;
- a discussion of the theme of tradition vs. modernity in post-war Spanish rural architecture (two articles for the same client);
- interactive teaching materials for a museum located in the Basque Country.
Finally, I have developed a particular specialism in motor racing (specifically Formula 1), having translated qualification and race reports, interviews, opinion columns and feature articles for the website of a major sponsor during the entire 2011 season.
CAT tools
One of the main reasons that I can work effectively and collaboratively on large and/or ongoing projects is my use of CAT tools. I have licences for SDL Trados 2007, SDL Studio 2009 and MemoQ Pro, which means that I can work with translation memories and bilingual files across all the key formats.
