THE FACTORY MUSEUM – ENGLISH VERSION
About the Museum
In the Factory Museum you can discover the history of the textile factory built by Israel Poznański in the nineteenth-century industrial city of Łódź. In its prime, Poznański’s industrial empire became a self-sufficient district of the city with its own church, hospital, and a residential area for workers. Today, these historical buildings, restored and rejuvenated, make up the commercial complex of Manufaktura. Visiting the museum is a journey into the factory’s moments of past glory, when millions of metres of quality textiles were being produced.
Apart from exploring the creation and development of the factory itself, the exhibitions unveil the history of Poznański’s rise to success, the technological process of producing cloth, and the everyday lives of its employees. Multimedia presentations, documents, photographs, films, blueprints, charts, and product samples are all gathered here to give you an opportunity to experience the history of this unique place. You will see old looms at work, hear former workers reminiscing, and follow the long and arduous journey cotton goes through before it becomes cloth – from a plantation, through a factory, to a shop.
Touring Łódź
Łódź is a unique city that has never had defensive walls nor a king. It has gained its fame as “the Polish Manchester” through its red brick factories and beautiful palaces once belonging to the factory owners.
The Fabricum Group, a company overseeing the running of the Factory Museum, offers unique guided tours of the city of Łódź, which will give you an opportunity to uncover the secrets and discover the facts about the past and present of “the industrial Promised Land”. The tours are designed to help you understand why Łódź has always fascinated film-makers, writers and poets.
Current events
“Women at the workplace” is a photo exhibition, opening on 8th March, which will present the women of Łódź working in the textile industry today.
Entry to the exhibition is included in The Factory Museum ticket.
First 50 ladies will receive gifts.

The topic of March workshops is: “A wardrobe – what to wear?”

Workshops for nursery school children
‘Had my grandfather worked in the factory...’
These classes explore working conditions in the former Poznański Factory.
Areas of interest include working hours, health and safety, complexity of different tasks, relations between employees, their home life and pastimes, children working in the factory.
How is fabric made?
Examining the process of fabric production (material, thread, cloth).
The participating children are given the opportunity to weave on a hand loom and design cloth patterns.
In the old factory – shadow puppets
Dramatic scenes of workers’ lives, in the form of shadow puppets, are presented against the background of a slideshow of the old factory’s interiors. The figures used in the performance include those made by children during the workshops. The participating children are encouraged to later spot the interiors from the slideshow in the museum exhibition.
Workshops for primary school children
From thread to cloth
These classes focus on the process of fabric production. The children are given a word-and-picture puzzle to solve, try to make cloth and knitted material, and find out the basic differences between them. There is also a short competition in weaving on a vertical hand loom.
What to wear?
A short history of clothes, with a focus on geographical origins of used fabrics.
For younger children – a cardboard figure to be ‘dressed’ in paper clothes.
For older children – designing clothes with the use of different materials, e.g. clothes for an alien or clothes for the Polish ‘truancy day’.
A city in the city
‘Poznański’s kingdom.’ – Visiting the Manufaktura site.
Teaching materials: schemes and tables presenting different spheres of workers’ lives; their needs and the employer’s response to them, comparison with the current situation; an attempt to identify the essential needs nowadays.
Workshops for secondary school pupils.
Fabric - what next?
The final process of fabric production:
- ways of finishing fabrics;
- basic rules of print design – drawing on foil using different colours;
- designing clothes and patterns;
- printing patterns onto the fabric;
- making clothes from unbleached linen for the participants;
- organizing a fashion show.
(The last two items are optional.)
If I were a manufacturer (a lesson in enterprise)
This class explores the general rules and methods of managing the Poznański Factory in order to understand the workings behind its rapid development, its contribution to Poznanski’s fast-expanding empire, and the reasons behind the its final collapse. The class includes a comparison with a modern textile factory “Poltex”. Finally, the students are asked to prepare a list of activities needed for opening and running such an enterprise today.
Work – salary (an enterprise and office techniques class)
This class deals with the organizational structures of both the Poznański Factory and “Poltex”. The aim is to compare the two factories in terms of organizing the production, assessment of employees, control methods, social security, required legal documents, salaries, working hours and the purchase value of money.
