Inside a Washing Machine
If we take a look under the washing machine, you'll see what makes it so heavy.
Yes, that is in fact a block of concrete in the picture above. The concrete is there to balance the equally heavy electric motor, which drives a very heavy gearbox that is attached to the steel inner tub. There are lots of heavy components in a washing machine.
The washing machine has two steel tubs. The inner tub is the one that holds the clothes. It has an agitator in the middle of it, and the sides are perforated with holes so that when the tub spins, the water can leave.
The outer tub, which seals in all the water, is bolted to the body of the washer. Because the inner tub vibrates and shakes during the wash cycle, it has to be mounted in a way that lets it move around without banging into other parts of the machine.
The inner tub is attached to the gearbox, which is attached to the black metal frame you see in the picture above. This frame holds the motor, gearbox and the concrete weight.
The picture above shows just the black metal frame, without the tub or gearbox. The cable that you see on the left side of the picture is the other end of the same cable that you see on the right side. There are a total of three pulleys, so that if one side of the frame moves up, the other side moves down. This system supports the weight of the heavy components, letting them move in such a way as not to shake the entire machine.
But, if all of these parts are just hanging by cables, why don't they swing around all the time?
A laundry machine has a damping system that uses friction to absorb some of the force from the vibrations.
In each of the four corners of the machine is a mechanism that works a little like a disc brake. The part attached to the washer frame is a spring. It squeezes two pads against the metal plate that is attached to the black frame. You can see where the pads have polished the plate from movement during vibration.
Plumbing
The plumbing on the washing machine has several jobs:
• It fills the washing machine with the correct temperature of water.
• It recirculates the wash water from the bottom of the wash tub back to the top (during the wash cycle).
• It pumps water out the drain (during the spin cycle).
The washing machine has hookups for two water lines on the back, one for hot water and one for cold. These lines are hooked up to the body of a solenoid valve.
The image above shows the back and front of the solenoid valve. You can see that there are two valves, but they feed into a single hose. So depending on the temperature selected, either the hot valve, the cold valve or both valves will open.
Before the hose releases water into the wash tub, it sends it through an anti-siphon device.
This device prevents wash water from being sucked back into the water supply lines, possibly contaminating the water for your house or even your neighborhood. You can see that the white, plastic device has a big opening that allows air in. The water from the hose shoots into the device and turns downward, exiting through the tube on the other end. But while it is inside the device, it is open to the atmosphere. This means that if there were suction on the water supply line, it could not possibly suck any water in from the washing machine; it would get only air.
The picture above shows the inlet through which water enters the washing machine. The nozzle to the right is an overflow port, which is connected to a pipe that dumps water out the bottom of the washing machine (onto your floor), instead of letting it overflow the tub and possibly get the motor wet.
Pump
The rest of the plumbing system, the part that recirculates the water and the part that drains it, involves the pump.
In the picture above, you can see how the pump is hooked up. This pump is actually two separate pumps in one: The bottom half of the pump is hooked up to the drain line, while the top half recirculates the wash water. So how does the pump decide whether to pump the water out the drain line or back into the wash tub?
This is where one of the neat tricks of the washing machine comes in: The motor that drives the pump can reverse direction. It spins one way when the washer is running a wash cycle and recirculating the water; and it spins the other way when the washer is doing a spin cycle and draining the water.
Let's take a closer look at the pump:
If you look carefully, you can see the vanes of the bottom layer of the pump. When water enters the pump's inlet, these vanes, or fins, push the water around and force it back out of the pump by way of the outlet. This type of pump can operate in both directions -- which port is the inlet and which is the outlet depends on which direction the pump is spinning in.
Take another look at the pump. If the pump spins clockwise, the bottom pump sucks water from the bottom of the wash tub and forces it out the drain hose, and the top pump tries to suck air from the top of the wash tub and force it back up through the bottom, so that no water recirculation takes place.
If the pump spins counter-clockwise, the top pump sucks water from the bottom of the tub and pumps it back up to the top, and the bottom pump tries to pump water from the drain hose back into the bottom of the tub. There is actually a little bit of water in the drain hose, but the pump doesn't have the power to force much of it back into the tub.
Take another look at the drain hose in the picture above -- notice how it loops all the way to the top of the machine before heading back down to the drain. Because one end of the hose is hooked up to the bottom of the tub and the other is open to the atmosphere, the level of water inside the drain hose will be the same as the level inside the tub. If the drain hose didn't go all the way up to the top of the machine, then the tub could never fill all the way. As soon as the water reaches the bend in the hose, it goes out the drain.
There are also times when the pump does not spin at all. The washer just churns the water that is in the tub without recirculating it. For this situation, the pump is hooked up to the motor by way of a clutch.
In this picture, you see the flexible coupling that hooks the clutch up to the pump. The coupling is needed because the motor and clutch are mounted to the frame, which can move freely with the inner tub, whereas the pump is mounted to the stationary outer tub.
On the bottom of the clutch is a set of four teeth. When the electromagnet engages, it raises an arm up into these teeth, which stops them from rotating. Once the teeth are stopped, the clutch starts to engage. After a couple of revolutions, it locks up to the motor shaft and the pump starts to turn with the motor.
Drive Mechanism
The drive mechanism on a washing machine has two jobs:
• To agitate the clothes, moving them back and forth inside the wash tub.
• To spin the entire wash tub, forcing the water out.
There is a really cool gearbox that handles these two jobs, and it uses the same trick as the pump does. If the motor spins in one direction, the gearbox agitates; if it spins the other way, the gearbox goes into spin cycle.
First, let's see how everything is hooked up:
In this picture, the frame has been removed. You can see the pump mounted to the outer tub, and the gearbox, which holds the inner tub. A piece of rubber seals the outer tub to the gearbox. The inner tub is mounted to the gearbox on the other side of the seal.
The inner tub has been removed from the outer tub in the picture above. It is resting on the gearbox, and the plastic agitator is visible in the center of the tub.
Here you can see the top side of the gearbox with the seal cut and the inner tub removed. The inner tub bolts to the three holes in the flange of the gearbox. You can see from the buildup of crud on top of the gearbox that it has been exposed to wash water for many years. A hollow tube extends from the center of the gearbox. Inside this tube is a splined shaft -- the spline on top of the shaft hooks into the plastic agitator.
Inside the Gearbox
The gearbox is one of the coolest parts of the washing machine. If you spin the pulley on the gearbox one way, the inner shaft turns slowly back and forth, reversing direction about every half-revolution. If you spin the pulley the other way, the flange spins at high speed, spinning the whole tub with it.
Here you can see a gear with a link attached to it. This link is just like the one attached to an old steam train wheel -- as the gear (along with the link) turns, it pushes another pie-shaped piece of gear back and forth. This pie-shaped gear engages a small gear on the inner shaft, which leads to the spline. In addition to rotating the inner shaft in alternating directions, there are other gears within the system that provide a gear reduction to slow the rotation. Because the motor spins only at one speed, spin-cycle speed, a gear reduction is necessary to facilitate the slower wash cycle.
When the washer goes into spin cycle, the whole mechanism locks up, causing everything to spin at the same speed as the input, which is hooked up to the motor. The interesting thing here is that when the motor spins the gearbox in one direction, the agitator runs, and when it spins it the other way, the whole machine locks up. How does it do this?
In the figure above, notice the gear with the angled teeth. There is also a smaller gear with angled teeth behind the big one in the foreground. These are the only two gears with angled teeth. Depending on which way the gears are spinning, the angle on the teeth will tend to force the inner gear to slide either to the left or to the right inside the gearbox. If it slides to the left, it engages a mechanism that locks up the gearbox.
You can see a small notch in the outer shaft. This notch is hollow, and is attached to the shaft with the small helical gear. When the small gear moves, it moves this outer shaft with it, and the small notch engages the single tooth that is fixed to the lockup mechanism. When the gearbox is locked up, both the inner shaft, which drives the agitator, and the outer shaft, which drives the tub, spin at the same speed as the input pulley.
Controls
The controls for this machine were designed before microcontrollers were being used in appliances. In fact, there is not a single resistor or capacitor in the whole machine. First, let's take a look at the cycle switch -- you'll be amazed at what is inside.
The cycle switch has the job of determining how long the different parts of the cycle last.
Inside the switch is a little motor equipped with a very large gear reduction that makes the control dial turn very slowly. In the top half of the switch, there is a set of six contacts. These are actuated by the small pieces of metal in the plastic arm on the dial. As the dial spins, bumps on the dial raise and lower the six metal pieces, which close and open the contacts in the top half of the switch.
If you look at the shape of the bumps, you can see why the dial on the washer spins only one way: The front side of the bumps has a slope that raises up the metal pieces gradually; but the back side doesn't, so if you try to turn the knob backward, the metal pieces wedge against the bumps.
This bumpy plastic disk is really the software program that runs your washing machine. The length of the bumps determines how long each part of the cycle lasts, and the length of the space between bumps determines how long the machine pauses before moving on to its next task.
The speed and temperature control switches are much simpler than the cycle control switch.
These switches control the speed of the motor and determine which of the hot/cold water supply solenoids will open during the wash and the rinse cycles. If hot is selected, only the hot water solenoid valve will open when the machine fills; if warm is selected, both will open; and if cold is selected, only the cold water solenoid valve will open.
The speed/temperature control is pretty simple. Each plastic rocker engages two sets of contacts, either opening or closing the circuit connected to those contacts. For each switch, there is always one closed and one open set of contacts.
The level sensor uses a pressure switch to detect the water level in the tub.
This switch controls how high the tub fills with water.
The big end of the hose connects to the bottom of the tub, while the small end connects to the switch. As the water level in the tub rises, water rises in the hose also; but the air in the hose is trapped, so as the water rises, the air is compressed.
Inside the housing of this switch is a little piston. The pressure in the hose pushes the piston up. When it is raised far enough, it pops up and closes an electrical contact. This set point, where the contact is lost, is adjustable, and in the picture you can see the cam mechanism that is connected to the adjuster knob on the control panel of the washer. As the cam turns, it presses a spring against the cylinder, making it harder for the cylinder to pop up. This means that the water level will have to rise some more before the pressure in the hose will be high enough to trigger the switch.

Se puede ver que ese dispositivo blanco de plástico tiene una gran abertura que permite la entrada de aire. El agua de la manguera se desagota en ese dispositivo y se dirige hacia abajo, saliendo por el caño que está en la otra punta. Pero mientras está dentro del dispositivo, está abierta a la atmósfera. Esto significa que si hubiera succión en el caño de suministro de agua, éste no podría chupar agua desde el lavarropas; por ahí solo puede entrar aire.
La figura de arriba muestra la entrada por la que el agua ingresa al lavarropas. La boquilla de la derecha es una salida de rebalse, que se conecta a un caño que lleva el agua desde el fondo del lavarropas (al piso), en vez de dejar que rebalse desde el tambor de lavado y posiblemente moje el motor.
La bomba de agua
El resto del sistema de las cañerías, la parte que recircula el agua y los desagotes incluyen a la bomba de agua.
En la figura de arriba, se puede ver cómo está conectada la bomba de agua. En realidad la bomba de agua son dos bombas distintas en una sola: la mitad de abajo de la bomba está conectada a la cañería de desagote, mientras que la mitad de arriba recircula el agua de lavado. ¿Entonces cómo decide la bomba para mandar el agua por la cañería de desagote o para devolverla al tambor de lavado?
En esto interviene uno de los diseños ingeniosos que tiene esta máquina de lavar: el motor que impulsa la bomba puede funcionar con rotación inversa. Gira en un sentido cuando el lavarropas está en el ciclo de lavado y recircula el agua; gira en sentido contrario cuando el lavarropas está centrifugando y desagotando el agua.
Veamos a la bomba desde cerca:
Si se mira con atención se pueden ver las aletas en la parte inferior de la bomba. Cuando el agua llega a la entrada, esas aletas impulsan el agua hacia afuera mandándola de nuevo hacia afuera por la salida. Este tipo de bomba puede operar en ambas direcciones - cuál va ser la entrada y cuál la salida dependerá del sentido en que gire la bomba.
Vuelva a mirar a la bomba. Si la bomba gira en el sentido horario, la bomba de abajo chupa el agua desde el fondo del tambor de lavado y la manda afuera por la manguera de desagote, y la bomba de arriba intenta chupar aire por arriba del tambor de lavado y mandarlo hacia abajo, de modo que no se produce la recirculación de agua.
Si la bomba gira en sentido antihorario, la bomba de arriba chupa agua desde el fondo del tambor y la manda de nuevo hacia arriba, y la bomba de abajo intenta mandar el agua desde la manguera de desagote nuevamente hacia el fondo del tambor. En ese momento hay un poco de agua en la manguera de desagote, pero la bomba no tiene fuerza para mandar mucha cantidad de agua nuevamente al tambor.
Observe nuevamente la manguera de desagote en la figura de arriba - fíjese como hace un bucle por arriba de la máquina antes de dirigirse nuevamente hacia el desagote. También hay veces en que la bomba no gira. El lavarropas agita el agua que está en el tambor sin que ésta recircule. Para este caso, la bomba está conectada al motor por medio de un embrague.
En esta figura, se ve el acoplamiento flexible que conecta el embrague con la bomba. El acoplamiento es necesario porque el motor y el embrague están montados en el bastidor, que tiene movimiento independiente junto con el tambor interno, mientras que la bomba está montada en el tambor externo, que es fijo.
En el fondo del embrague hay un conjunto de cuatro dientes. Cuando la válvula electromagnética engancha, levanta un brazo que encaja en esos dientes, lo que detiene su rotación. Una vez que se detienen los dientes, el embrague comienza a acoplarse. Luego de un par de vueltas, bloquea el eje del motor y la bomba comienza a girar con el motor.

En esta figura el bastidor se ha quitado. Se puede ver la bomba montada en el tambor externo, y la caja de engranajes, que sostiene el tambor interno. Un trozo de goma sella el tambor externo con la caja de engranajes. El tambor interno está montado sobre la caja de engranajes al otro lado de la junta.

Ese engranaje en forma de empanada se acopla con un engranaje pequeño del eje interno, que lleva a una ranura de enganche. Además de hacer girar al eje interno en sentidos alternados, hay otros engranajes dentro del sistema que producen una reducción para bajar la velocidad de giro. Dado que el motor tiene sólo una velocidad, la velocidad del centrifugado, es necesario el engranaje de reducción para hacer posible el ciclo de lavado más lento.
Cuando el lavarropas entra en el ciclo de centrifugado, se bloquea todo el mecanismo, y todo gira a la misma velocidad de la entrada, que está conectada directamente al motor. Lo bueno del sistema es que cuando el motor hace girar la caja de engranajes en un sentido, se mueve el agitador, y que cuando gira al revés toda la máquina se bloquea. ¿Cómo se consigue esto?

Éstos son los dos únicos engranajes con dientes inclinados. Dependiendo del sentido de giro de los engranajes, la inclinación de los dientes intenta hacer desplazar al engranaje interno para la derecha o para la izquierda dentro de la caja de engranajes. Si se desplaza para la izquierda, engancha el mecanismo que bloquea la caja de engranajes.
Se puede ver una ranura pequeña en el eje externo. La ranura es superficial, y está conectada al eje con el pequeño engranaje helicoidal. Cuando se mueve el engranaje pequeño, éste mueve con él al eje externo, y la ranura pequeña engancha el diente único que está fijo al mecanismo de bloqueo. Cuando la caja de engranajes se bloquea, tanto el eje interno que impulsa al agitador, como el externo que impulsa el tambor giran a la misma velocidad de la polea de entrada.
Los controles
Los controles de esta máquina fueron diseñados antes de que se usen los microcontroladores en los artefactos. De hecho, en toda la máquina ni siquiera hay un resistor o un capacitor. Antes que nada, veamos la llave de ciclos -- y se asombrará de ver lo que hay adentro.
La llave de ciclos tiene la tarea de determinar la duración de las diferentes etapas del ciclo.
Dentro de la llave de ciclos hay un pequeño motor equipado con un engranaje de reducción muy grande, que produce un giro muy lento en el dial de control. Chapter 1. Introduction
Most free software projects fail.
We tend not to hear very much about the failures. Only successful projects attract attention, and there are so many free software projects in total that even though only a small percentage succeed, the result is still a lot of visible projects. We also don't hear about the failures because failure is not an event. There is no single moment when a project ceases to be viable; people just sort of drift away and stop working on it. There may be a moment when a final change is made to the project, but those who made it usually didn't know at the time that it was the last one. There is not even a clear definition of when a project is expired. Is it when it hasn't been actively worked on for six months? When its user base stops growing, without having exceeded the developer base? What if the developers of one project abandon it because they realized they were duplicating the work of another—and what if they join that other project, then expand it to include much of their earlier effort? Did the first project end, or just change homes?
Because of such complexities, it's impossible to put a precise number on the failure rate. But anecdotal evidence from over a decade in open source, some casting around on SourceForge.net, and a little Googling all point to the same conclusion: the rate is extremely high, probably on the order of 90–95%. The number climbs higher if you include surviving but dysfunctional projects: those which are producing running code, but which are not pleasant places to be, or are not making progress as quickly or as dependably as they could.
This book is about avoiding failure. It examines not only how to do things right, but how to do them wrong, so you can recognize and correct problems early. My hope is that after reading it, you will have a repertory of techniques not just for avoiding common pitfalls of open source development, but also for dealing with the growth and maintenance of a successful project. Success is not a zero-sum game, and this book is not about winning or getting ahead of the competition. Indeed, an important part of running an open source project is working smoothly with other, related projects. In the long run, every successful project contributes to the well-being of the overall, worldwide body of free software.
It would be tempting to say that free software projects fail for the same sorts of reasons proprietary software projects do. Certainly, free software has no monopoly on unrealistic requirements, vague specifications, poor resource management, insufficient design phases, or any of the other hobgoblins already well known to the software industry. There is a huge body of writing on these topics, and I will try not to duplicate it in this book. Instead, I will attempt to describe the problems peculiar to free software. When a free software project runs aground, it is often because the developers (or the managers) did not appreciate the unique problems of open source software development, even though they might have been quite prepared for the better-known difficulties of closed-source development.
One of the most common mistakes is unrealistic expectations about the benefits of open source itself. An open license does not guarantee that hordes of active developers will suddenly volunteer their time to your project, nor does open-sourcing a troubled project automatically cure its ills. In fact, quite the opposite: opening up a project can add whole new sets of complexities, and cost more in the short term than simply keeping it in-house. Opening up means arranging the code to be comprehensible to complete strangers, setting up a development web site and email lists, and often writing documentation for the first time. All this is a lot of work. And of course, if any interested developers do show up, there is the added burden of answering their questions for a while before seeing any benefit from their presence. As developer Jamie Zawinski said about the troubled early days of the Mozilla project:
Open source does work, but it is most definitely not a panacea. If there's a cautionary tale here, it is that you can't take a dying project, sprinkle it with the magic pixie dust of "open source," and have everything magically work out. Software is hard. The is

A related mistake is that of skimping on presentation and packaging, figuring that these can always be done later, when the project is well under way. Presentation and packaging comprise a wide range of tasks, all revolving around the theme of reducing the barrier to entry. Making the project inviting to the uninitiated means writing user and developer documentation, setting up a project web site that's informative to newcomers, automating as much of the software's compilation and installation as possible, etc. Many programmers unfortunately treat this work as being of secondary importance to the code itself. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, it can feel like busywork, because its benefits are most visible to those least familiar with the project, and vice versa. After all, the people who develop the code don't really need the packaging. They already know how to install, administer, and use the software, because they wrote it. Second, the skills required to do presentation and packaging well are often completely different from those required to write code. People tend to focus on what they're good at, even if it might serve the project better to spend a little time on something that suits them less. Chapter 2, Getting Started discusses presentation and packaging in detail, and explains why it's crucial that they be a priority from the very start of the project.
Next comes the fallacy that little or no project management is required in open source, or conversely, that the same management practices used for in-house development will work equally well on an open source project. Management in an open source project isn't always very visible, but in the successful projects, it's usually happening behind the scenes in some form or another. A small thought experiment suffices to show why. An open source project consists of a random collection of programmers—already a notoriously independent-minded category—who have most likely never met each other, and who may each have different personal goals in working on the project. The thought experiment is simply to imagine what would happen to such a group without management. Barring miracles, it would collapse or drift apart very quickly. Things won't simply run themselves, much as we might wish otherwise. But the management, though it may be quite active, is often informal, subtle, and low-key. The only thing keeping a development group together is their shared belief that they can do more in concert than individually. Thus the goal of management is mostly to ensure that they continue to believe this, by setting standards for communications, by making sure useful developers don't get marginalized due to personal idiosyncracies, and in general by making the project a place developers want to keep coming back to. Specific techniques for doing this are discussed throughout the rest of this book.
Finally, there is a general category of problems that may be called "failures of cultural navigation." Ten years ago, even five, it would have been premature to talk about a global culture of free software, but not anymore. A recognizable culture has slowly emerged, and while it is certainly not monolithic—it is at least as prone to internal dissent and factionalism as any geographically bound culture—it does have a basically consistent core. Most successful open source projects exhibit some or all of the characteristics of this core. They reward certain types of behaviors, and punish others; they create an atmosphere that encourages unplanned participation, sometimes at the expense of central coordination; they have concepts of rudeness and politeness that can differ substantially from those prevalent elsewhere. Most importantly, longtime participants have generally internalized these standards, so that they share a rough consensus about expected conduct. Unsuccessful projects usually deviate in significant ways from this core, albeit unintentionally, and often do not have a consensus about what constitutes reasonable default behavior. This means that when problems arise, the situation can quickly deteriorate, as the participants lack an already established stock of cultural reflexes to fall back on for resolving differences.
This book is a practical guide, not an anthropological study or a history. However, a working knowledge of the origins of today's free software culture is an essential foundation for any practical advice. A person who understands the culture can travel far and wide in the open source world, encountering many local variations in custom and dialect, yet still be able to participate comfortably and effectively everywhere. In contrast, a person who does not understand the culture will find the process of organizing or participating in a project difficult and full of surprises. Since the number of people developing free software is still growing by leaps and bounds, there are many people in that latter category—this is largely a culture of recent immigrants, and will continue to be so for some time. If you think you might be one of them, the next section provides background for discussions you'll encounter later, both in this book and on the Internet. (On the other hand, if you've been working with open source for a while, you may already know a lot of its history, so feel free to skip the next section.)
History
Software sharing has been around as long as software itself. In the early days of computers, manufacturers felt that competitive advantages were to be had mainly in hardware innovation, and therefore didn't pay much attention to software as a business asset. Many of the customers for these early machines were scientists or technicians, who were able to modify and extend the software shipped with the machine themselves. Customers sometimes distributed their patches back not only to the manufacturer, but to other owners of similar machines. The manufacturers often tolerated and even encouraged this: in their eyes, improvements to the software, from whatever source, just made the machine more attractive to other potential customers.
Although this early period resembled today's free software culture in many ways, it differed in two crucial respects. First, there was as yet little standardization of hardware—it was a time of flourishing innovation in computer design, but the diversity of computing architectures meant that everything was incompatible with everything else. Thus, software written for one machine would generally not work on another. Programmers tended to acquire expertise in a particular architecture or family of architectures (whereas today they would be more likely to acquire expertise in a programming language or family of languages, confident that their expertise will be transferable to whatever computing hardware they happen to find themselves working with). Because a person's expertise tended to be specific to one kind of computer, their accumulation of expertise had the effect of making that computer more attractive to them and their colleagues. It was therefore in the manufacturer's interests for machine-specific code and knowledge to spread as widely as possible.
Second, there was no Internet. Though there were fewer legal restrictions on sharing than today, there were more technical ones: the means of getting data from place to place were inconvenient and cumbersome, relatively speaking. There were some small, local networks, good for sharing information among employees at the same research lab or company. But there remained barriers to overcome if one wanted to share with everyone, no matter where they were. These barriers were overcome in many cases. Sometimes different groups made contact with each other independently, sending disks or tapes through land mail, and sometimes the manufacturers themselves served as central clearing houses for patches. It also helped that many of the early computer developers worked at universities, where publishing one's knowledge was expected. But the physical realities of data transmission meant there was always an impedance to sharing, an impedance proportional to the distance (real or organizational) that the software had to travel. Widespread, frictionless sharing, as we know it today, was not possible.
The Rise of Proprietary Software and Free Software
As the industry matured, several interrelated changes occurred simultaneously. The wild diversity of hardware designs gradually gave way to a few clear winners—winners through superior technology, superior marketing, or some combination of the two. At the same time, and not entirely coincidentally, the development of so-called "high level" programming languages meant that one could write a program once, in one language, and have it automatically translated ("compiled") to run on different kinds of computers. The implications of this were not lost on the hardware manufacturers: a customer could now undertake a major software engineering effort without necessarily locking themselves into one particular computer architecture. When this was combined with the gradual narrowing of performance differences between various computers, as the less efficient designs were weeded out, a manufacturer that treated its hardware as its only asset could look forward to a future of declining profit margins. Raw computing power was becoming a fungible good, while software was becoming the differentiator. Selling software, or at least treating it as an integral part of hardware sales, began to look like a good strategy.
This meant that manufacturers had to start enforcing the copyrights on their code more strictly. If users simply continued to share and modify code freely among themselves, they might independently reimplement some of the improvements now being sold as "added value" by the supplier. Worse, shared code could get into the hands of competitors. The irony is that all this was happening around the time the Internet was getting off the ground. Just when truly unobstructed software sharing was finally becoming technically possible, changes in the computer business made it economically undesirable, at least from the point of view of any single company. The suppliers clamped down, either denying users access to the code that ran their machines, or insisting on non-disclosure agreements that made effective sharing impossible.
Conscious resistance
As the world of unrestricted code swapping slowly faded away, a counterreaction crystallized in the mind of at least one programmer. Richard Stallman worked in the Artificial Intelligence Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1970s and early '80s, during what turned out to be a golden age and a golden location for code sharing. The AI Lab had a strong "hacker ethic",3 and people were not only encouraged but expected to share whatever improvements they made to the system. As Stallman wrote later:
We did not call our software "free software", because that term did not yet exist; but that is what it was. Whenever people from another university or a company wanted to port and use a program, we gladly let them. If you saw someone using an unfamiliar and interesting program, you could always ask to see the source code, so that you could read it, change it, or cannibalize parts of it to make a new program.

This Edenic community collapsed around Stallman shortly after 1980, when the changes that had been happening in the rest of the industry finally caught up with the AI Lab. A startup company hired away many of the Lab's programmers to work on an operating system similar to what they had been working on at the Lab, only now under an exclusive license. At the same time, the AI Lab acquired new equipment that came with a proprietary operating system.
Stallman saw the larger pattern in what was happening:
The modern computers of the era, such as the VAX or the 68020, had their own operating systems, but none of them were free software: you had to sign a nondisclosure agreement even to get an executable copy.
This meant that the first step in using a computer was to promise not to help your neighbor. A cooperating community was forbidden. The rule made by the owners of proprietary software was, "If you share with your neighbor, you are a pirate. If you want any changes, beg us to make them."
By some quirk of personality, he decided to resist the trend. Instead of continuing to work at the now-decimated AI Lab, or taking a job writing code at one of the new companies, where the results of his work would be kept locked in a box, he resigned from the Lab and started the GNU Project and the Free Software Foundation (FSF). The goal of GNU4 was to develop a completely free and open computer operating system and body of application software, in which users would never be prevented from hacking or from sharing their modifications. He was, in essence, setting out to recreate what had been destroyed at the AI Lab, but on a world-wide scale and without the vulnerabilities that had made the AI Lab's culture susceptible to disintegration.
In addition to working on the new operating system, Stallman devised a copyright license whose terms guaranteed that his code would be perpetually free. The GNU General Public License (GPL) is a clever piece of legal judo: it says that the code may be copied and modified without restriction, and that both 3Stallman uses the word "hacker" in the sense of "someone who loves to program and enjoys being clever about it," not the relat
ively new meaning of "someone who breaks into computers."

copies and derivative works (i.e., modified versions) must be distributed under the same license as the original, with no additional restrictions. In effect, it uses copyright law to achieve an effect opposite to that of traditional copyright: instead of limiting the software's distribution, it prevents anyone, even the author, from limiting it. For Stallman, this was better than simply putting his code into the public domain. If it were in the public domain, any particular copy of it could be incorporated into a proprietary program (as has also been known to happen to code under permissive copyright licenses). While such incorporation wouldn't in any way diminish the original code's continued availability, it would have meant that Stallman's efforts could benefit the enemy—proprietary software. The GPL can be thought of as a form of protectionism for free software, because it prevents non-free software from taking full advantage of GPLed code. The GPL and its relationship to other free software licenses are discussed in detail in Chapter 9, Licenses, Copyrights, and Patents.
With the help of many programmers, some of whom shared Stallman's ideology and some of whom simply wanted to see a lot of free code available, the GNU Project began releasing free replacements for many of the most critical components of an operating system. Because of the now-widespread standardization in computer hardware and software, it was possible to use the GNU replacements on otherwise non-free systems, and many people did. The GNU text editor (Emacs) and C compiler (GCC) were particularly successful, gaining large and loyal followings not on ideological grounds, but simply on their technical merits. By about 1990, GNU had produced most of a free operating system, except for the kernel—the part that the machine actually boots up, and that is responsible for managing memory, disk, and other system resources.
Unfortunately, the GNU project had chosen a kernel design that turned out to be harder to implement than expected. The ensuing delay prevented the Free Software Foundation from making the first release of an entirely free operating system. The final piece was put into place instead by Linus Torvalds, a Finnish computer science student who, with the help of volunteers around the world, had completed a free kernel using a more conservative design. He named it Linux, and when it was combined with the existing GNU programs, the result was a completely free operating system. For the first time, you could boot up your computer and do work without using any proprietary software.5
Much of the software on this new operating system was not produced by the GNU project. In fact, GNU wasn't even the only group working on producing a free operating system (for example, the code that eventually became NetBSD and FreeBSD was already under development by this time). The importance of the Free Software Foundation was not only in the code they wrote, but in their political rhetoric. By talking about free software as a cause instead of a convenience, they made it difficult for programmers not to have a political consciousness about it. Even those who disagreed with the FSF had to engage the issue, if only to stake out a different position. The FSF's effectiveness as propagandists lay in tying their code to a message, by means of the GPL and other texts. As their code spread widely, that message spread as well.
Accidental resistance
There were many other things going on in the nascent free software scene, however, and few were as explictly ideological as Stallman's GNU Project. One of the most important was the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), a gradual re-implementation of the Unix operating system—which up until the late 1970's had been a loosely proprietary research project at AT&T—by programmers at the University of California at Berkeley. The BSD group did not make any overt political statements about the need for programmers to band together and share with one another, but they practiced the idea with flair and enthusiasm, by coordinating a massive distributed development effort in which the Unix command-line utilities and code libraries, and eventually the operating system kernel itself, were rewritten from scratch mostly by volunteers. The BSD project became a prime example of non-ideological free software development, and also served as a training ground for many developers who would go on to remain active in the open source world.
Another crucible of cooperative development was the X Window System, a free, network-transparent

graphical computing environment, developed at MIT in the mid-1980's in partnership with hardware vendors who had a common interest in being able to offer their customers a windowing system. Far from opposing proprietary software, the X license deliberately allowed proprietary extensions on top of the free core—each member of the consortium wanted the chance to enhance the default X distribution, and thereby gain a competitive advantage over the other members. X Windows6 itself was free software, but mainly as a way to level the playing field between competing business interests, not out of some desire to end the dominance of proprietary software. Yet another example, predating the GNU project by a few years, was TeX, Donald Knuth's free, publishing-quality typesetting system. He released it under a license that allowed anyone to modify and distribute the code, but not to call the result "TeX" unless it passed a very strict set of compatibility tests (this is an example of the "trademark-protecting" class of free licenses, discussed more in Chapter 9, Licenses, Copyrights, and Patents). Knuth wasn't taking a stand one way or the other on the question of free-versus-proprietary software, he just needed a better typesetting system in order to complete his real goal—a book on computer programming—and saw no reason not to release his system to the world when done.
Without listing every project and every license, it's safe to say that by the late 1980's, there was a lot of free software available under a wide variety of licenses. The diversity of licenses reflected a corresponding diversity of motivations. Even some of the progammers who chose the GNU GPL were much less ideologically driven than the GNU project itself. Although they enjoyed working on free software, many developers did not consider proprietary software a social evil. There were people who felt a moral impulse to rid the world of "software hoarding" (Stallman's term for non-free software), but others were motivated more by technical excitement, or by the pleasure of working with like-minded collaborators, or even by a simple human desire for glory. Yet by and large these disparate motivations did not interact in destructive ways. This is partly because software, unlike other creative forms like prose or the visual arts, must pass semi-objective tests in order to be considered successful: it must run, and be reasonably free of bugs. This gives all participants in a project a kind of automatic common ground, a reason and a framework for working together without worrying too much about qualifications beyond the technical.
Developers had another reason to stick together as well: it turned out that the free software world was producing some very high-quality code. In some cases, it was demonstrably technically superior to the nearest non-free alternative; in others, it was at least comparable, and of course it always cost less. While only a few people might have been motivated to run free software on strictly philosophical grounds, a great many people were happy to run it because it did a better job. And of those who used it, some percentage were always willing to donate their time and skills to help maintain and improve the software.
This tendency to produce good code was certainly not universal, but it was happening with increasing frequency in free software projects around the world. Businesses that depended heavily on software gradually began to take notice. Many of them discovered that they were already using free software in day-to-day operations, and simply hadn't known it (upper management isn't always aware of everything the IT department does). Corporations began to take a more active and public role in free software projects, contributing time and equipment, and sometimes even directly funding the development of free programs. Such investments could, in the best scenarios, repay themselves many times over. The sponsor only pays a small number of expert programmers to devote themselves to the project full time, but reaps the benefits of everyone's contributions, including work from unpaid volunteers and from programmers being paid by other corporations.
"Free" Versus "Open Source"
As the corporate world gave more and more attention to free software, programmers were faced with new issues of presentation. One was the word "free" itself. On first hearing the term "free software" many people mistakenly think it means just "zero-cost software." It's true that all free software is zero-cost,7 but not all zero-cost software is free. For example, during the battle of the browsers in the 1990s, both Netscape and Microsoft gave away their competing web browsers at no charge, in a scramble to gain market share. code, and even if you could, you didn't have the right to modify or redistribute it.8 The only thing you could do was download an executable and run it. The browsers were no more free than shrink-wrapped software bought in a store; they merely had a lower price.
This confusion over the word "free" is due entirely to an unfortunate ambiguity in the English language. Most other tongues distinguish low prices from liberty (the distinction between gratis and libre is immediately clear to speakers of Romance languages, for example). But English's position as the de facto bridge language of the Internet means that a problem with English is, to some degree, a problem for everyone. The misunderstanding around the word "free" was so prevalent that free software programmers eventually evolved a standard formula in response: "It's free as in freedom—think free speech, not free beer." Still, having to explain it over and over is tiring. Many programmers felt, with some justification, that the ambiguous word "free" was hampering the public's understanding of this software.
But the problem went deeper than that. The word "free" carried with it an inescapable moral connotation: if freedom was an end in itself, it didn't matter whether free software also happened to be better, or more profitable for certain businesses in certain circumstances. Those were merely pleasant side effects of a motive that was, at bottom, neither technical nor mercantile, but moral. Furthermore, the "free as in freedom" position forced a glaring inconsistency on corporations who wanted to support particular free programs in one aspect of their business, but continue marketing proprietary software in others.
These dilemmas came to a community that was already poised for an identity crisis. The programmers who actually write free software have never been of one mind about the overall goal, if any, of the free software movement. Even to say that opinions run from one extreme to the other would be misleading, in that it would falsely imply a linear range where there is instead a multidimensional scattering. However, two broad categories of belief can be distinguished, if we are willing to ignore subtleties for the moment. One group takes Stallman's view, that the freedom to share and modify is the most important thing, and that therefore if you stop talking about freedom, you've left out the core issue. Others feel that the software itself is the most important argument in its favor, and are uncomfortable with proclaiming proprietary software inherently bad. Some, but not all, free software programmers believe that the author (or employer, in the case of paid work) should have the right to control the terms of distribution, and that no moral judgement need be attached to the choice of particular terms.
For a long time, these differences did not need to be carefully examined or articulated, but free software's burgeoning success in the business world made the issue unavoidable. In 1998, the term open source was created as an alternative to "free", by a coalition of programmers who eventually became The Open Source Initiative (OSI).9 The OSI felt not only that "free software" was potentially confusing, but that the word "free" was just one symptom of a general problem: that the movement needed a marketing program to pitch it to the corporate world, and that talk of morals and the social benefits of sharing would never fly in corporate boardrooms. In their own words:
The Open Source Initiative is a marketing program for free software. It's a pitch for "free software" on solid pragmatic grounds rather than ideological tub-thumping. The winning substance has not changed, the losing attitude and symbolism have. ...
The case that needs to be made to most techies isn't about the concept of open source, but the name. Why not call it, as we traditionally have, free software?
One direct reason is that the term "free software" is easily misunderstood in ways that lead to conflict. ...
But the real reason for the re-labeling is a marketing one. We're trying to pitch our concept to the corporate world now. We have a winning product, but our positioning, in the past, has been awful. The term "free software" has been misunderstood by business persons, who mistake the desire to share with anti-commercialism, or worse, theft.
Mainstream corporate CEOs and CTOs will never buy "free software." But if we take the very same tradition, the same people, and the same free-software licenses and change the label to "open source" ? that, they'll buy.
Some hackers find this hard to believe, but that's because they're techies who think in concrete, substantial terms and don't understand how important image is when you're selling something.
In marketing, appearance is reality. The appearance that we're willing to climb down off the barricades and work with the corporate world counts for as much as the reality of our behavior, our convictions, and our software.

The tips of many icebergs of controversy are visible in that text. It refers to "our convictions", but smartly avoids spelling out exactly what those convictions are. For some, it might be the conviction that code developed according to an open process will be better code; for others, it might be the conviction that all information should be shared. There's the use of the word "theft" to refer (presumably) to illegal copying—a usage that many object to, on the grounds that it's not theft if the original possessor still has the item afterwards. There's the tantalizing hint that the free software movement might be mistakenly accused of anti-commercialism, but it leaves carefully unexamined the question of whether such an accusation would have any basis in fact.
None of which is to say that the OSI's web site is inconsistent or misleading. It's not. Rather, it is an example of exactly what the OSI claims had been missing from the free software movement: good marketing, where "good" means "viable in the business world." The Open Source Initiative gave a lot of people exactly what they had been looking for—a vocabulary for talking about free software as a development methodology and business strategy, instead of as a moral crusade.
The appearance of the Open Source Initiative changed the landscape of free software. It formalized a dichotomy that had long been unnamed, and in doing so forced the movement to acknowledge that it had internal politics as well as external. The effect today is that both sides have had to find common ground, since most projects include programmers from both camps, as well as participants who don't fit any clear category. This doesn't mean people never talk about moral motivations—lapses in the traditional "hacker ethic" are sometimes called out, for example. But it is rare for a free software / open source developer to openly question the basic motivations of others in a project. The contribution trumps the contributor. If someone writes good code, you don't ask them whether they do it for moral reasons, or because their employer paid them to, or because they're building up their resumé, or whatever. You evaluate the contribution on technical grounds, and respond on technical grounds. Even explicitly political organizations like the Debian project, whose goal is to offer a 100% free (that is, "free as in freedom") computing environment, are fairly relaxed about integrating with non-free code and cooperating with programmers who don't share exactly the same goals.
The Situation Today
When running a free software project, you won't need to talk about such weighty philosophical matters on a daily basis. Programmers will not insist that everyone else in the project agree with their views on all things (those who do insist on this quickly find themselves unable to work in any project). But you do need to be aware that the question of "free" versus "open source" exists, partly to avoid saying things that might be inimical to some of the participants, and partly because understanding developers' motivations is the best way—in some sense, the only way—to manage a project.
Free software is a culture by choice. To operate successfully in it, you have to understand why people choose to be in it in the first place. Coercive techniques don't work. If people are unhappy in one project, they will just wander off to another one. Free software is remarkable even among volunteer communities for its lightness of investment. Most of the people involved have never actually met the other participants face-to-face, and simply donate bits of time whenever they feel like it. The normal conduits by which humans bond with each other and form lasting groups are narrowed down to a tiny channel: the written word, carried over electronic wires. Because of this, it can take a long time for a cohesive and dedicated group to form. Conversely, it's quite easy for a project to lose a potential volunteer in the first five minutes of acquaintanceship. If a project doesn't make a good first impression, newcomers rarely give it a second chance.
The transience, or rather the potential transience, of relationships is perhaps the single most daunting task facing a new project. What will persuade all these people to stick together long enough to produce something useful? The answer to that question is complex enough to occupy the rest of this book, but if it had to be expressed in one sentence, it would be this:
People should feel that their connection to a project, and influence over it, is directly proportional to their contributions.
No class of developers, or potential developers, should ever feel discounted or discriminated against for non-technical reasons. Clearly, projects with corporate sponsorship and/or salaried developers need to be especially careful in this regard, as Chapter 5, Money discusses in detail. Of course, this doesn't mean that if there's no corporate sponsorship then you have nothing to worry about. Money is merely one of many factors that can affect the success of a project. There are also questions of what language to choose, what license, what development process, precisely what kind of infrastructure to set up, how to publicize the project's inception effectively, and much more. Starting a project out on the right foot is the topic of the next chapter.

La mayoría del software libre suele fracasar.
Tratamos de no prestar mucha atención a los fracasos. Solamente los proyectos exitosos llaman la atención, y hay tantos proyectos de software que aún cuando solamente
un pequeño porcentaje tenga éxito, el resultado es de una apreciable cantidad de proyectos. Pero tampoco prestamos
atención a los fracasos porque no los contamos como un suceso. No existe un momento puntual en el que un proyecto deja de ser viable; simplemente se los deja de
lado y se deja de trabajar en ellos. Puede haber un momento en que se hace un cambio final al proyecto, pero sin importar quien lo haga, normalmente él no sabe en ese momento que ese cambio fue el último. Tampoco hay una definición clara del momento en que un proyecto se acaba.
¿Podrá ser cuando se haya dejado de trabajar en él por seis meses? ¿O cuando su base de usuario deja de crecer, sin antes haber excedido la base del programador? ¿Y qué

Por estas razones complejas es imposible obtener un número preciso en la cantidad de proyectos caídos. Pero la evidencia de lo que ha ocurrido en más de un decenio con proyectos con fuente abierta, y curioseando un poco en SourceForge.net y otro poco en Google, se llega siempre a la misma conclusión: el porcentaje es muy alto,
probablemente algo así como el 90-95%. Este numero crece aún más si se incluyen los proyectos que sobreviven pero son disfuncionales. Aquellos que producen un código que funciona, pero no son placenteros ni amigables, o no significan un progreso ágil y confiable como deberían ser.
En este libro se habla de cómo evitar los fracasos. Se examina no solamente cómo se hacen bien las cosas, sino también como se hacen mal, para que se puedan reconocer desde el comienzo, y se corrijan los problemas. Tengo la esperanza que luego de leer este libro, el lector adquiera un repertorio de técnicas no sólo para evitar los errores comunes del desarrollo de programas de fuente abierta, sino también para manejar la expansión y el mantenimiento de un proyecto exitoso. Un error relacionado es el de ignorar la presentación y el empaquetado, creyendo que esto se puede hacer después, cuando el proyecto esté encaminado. La presentación y el empaquetado comprenden una serie abundante de tareas, todas alrededor del tema de reducir la barrera del inicio. Hacer un proyecto atractivo para un no iniciado
significa documentarlo para el usuario y el programador, instalar una página web que sea informativa para los nuevos, automatizar cuanto sea posible la compilación e instalación del software, etc. Desgraciadamente muchos
programadores dan una importancia secundaria a este trabajo comparado con la que le dan al código. Hay un par
de razones para esto. Primero, se lo puede percibir como trabajo no productivo, porque aparentemente beneficia más a los que no están familiarizados con el proyecto. De
cualquier modo, los que desarrollan el código no necesitan realmente del empaquetado. Ya saben como instalar, administrar y usar el software, porque ellos lo escribieron. pequeño experimento mental será suficiente para entender por qué. Un proyecto de fuente abierta consiste en una colección de programadores al azar –los que ya de por sí
son gente con categorías independientes- que muy probablemente nunca se van a encontrar juntos, y que quizás tienen objetivos personales muy diferentes para trabajar en el proyecto. El experimento mental consiste
en imaginar sencillamente qué va a pasarle a dicho grupo sin un trabajo de administración. Si no creemos en milagros, la cosa va a colapsar y diluirse muy rápidamente. Las cosas no funcionarán simplemente por si solas, por más que los deseos sean grandes. Pero la
administración, aún cuando sea muy activa, es a menudo informal, sutil, y de bajo perfil. Lo único que mantiene unido al grupo de desarrollo es el convencimiento compartido de que juntos pueden hacer más que
individualmente. Entonces el objetivo de la
administración es principalmente asegurar que continúen en ese convencimiento, estableciendo estándares de comunicación, cuidando que los programadores útiles no
queden marginados debido a idiosincrasias personales, y en general procurando que el proyecto sea un lugar acogedor para los programadores. Las técnicas específicas
para realizar esto se discuten a lo largo de este libro.
Finalmente, hay una categoría general de los problemas que podría llamarse “fallas de orientación cultural.”
Hace diez años, o quizás cinco, hubiera sido prematuro hablar de una cultura global de software libre, pero ahora ya no es así. Lentamente se reconoce que emerge una
cultura, y aún cuando esta no es monolítica –por lo menos es tan propensa al disentimiento interno y al corporativismo como cualquier cultura limitada geográficamente- tiene ciertamente un núcleo básico consistente. Los proyectos de fuente abierta más exitosos muestran una parte o a veces el total de las características de ese núcleo. Se premian ciertos tipos de conductas y se castigan otras. Se crea una atmósfera que incita a la participación espontánea, a veces a
expensas de una coordinación central. Se tienen conceptos de lo que es ser amable o ser rudo que difieren substancialmente de lo que prevalece afuera. Lo más importante es que los participantes que son asiduos tienen ya internalizados esos conceptos y comparten un cierto consenso sobre la conducta que es aceptable. Los proyectos no exitosos a menudo se desvían apreciablemente de ese núcleo, a veces intencionalmente, y no tienen un consenso sobre lo que razonablemente constituye una conducta predeterminada. Esto quiere decir que cuando surgen los problemas la situación se viene abajo rápidamente, porque los participantes carecen de un
conjunto de reflejos culturales determinados que les permita resolver sus diferencias.
Este libro es una guía práctica, no un estudio
antropológico o un libro de historia. Sin embargo, un conocimiento efectivo de los orígenes del software libre actual es una base esencial para cualquier consejo práctico. Una persona que entienda esta cultura puede
viajar sin límites en este mundo de la fuente abierta, encontrándose con muchas variaciones en costumbres y dialectos, y a la vez estar en condiciones de participar
cómoda y efectivamente en cualquier lado. Por el contrario, una persona que no entiende esta cultura encontrará que el proceso de organizar y participar en un proyecto es algo difícil y lleno de sorpresas. Puesto que el número de gente que desarrolla software libre sigue

La Historia Compartir el software tiene tanta historia como el software mismo. En los primeros tiempos de los ordenadores, los fabricantes se dieron cuenta que vendrían avances competitivos en la innovación del
hardware y no prestaron mucha atención al software como una ventaja para el desarrollo de sus negocios. Muchos de los usuarios de las primeras máquinas eran científicos o
técnicos que podían modificar y ampliar el software que incluía la máquina. A veces los usuarios distribuían sus programas propios no solamente al fabricante, sino también a otros usuarios que tenían máquinas similares. A

Auque esta primera época se parece de muchas maneras a la cultura actual del software libre, difiere fundamentalmente en dos aspectos: primero que había poca
estandarización del hardware. Era un momento de mucha innovación en el diseño de los ordenadores, pero la diversidad en las arquitecturas hacía que cualquier cosa
resultara incompatible con la otra. Así que el software que se escribía para una máquina generalmente no servía
para otra. Los programadores se inclinaban hacia una arquitectura en particular o familia de arquitecturas y en ellas se hacían expertos ( hoy por el contrario, se adquiere experiencia en un lenguaje de programación o una
familia de lenguajes y se espera que esa experiencia se pueda luego transferir a cualquier hardware en donde se vaya a trabajar). Puesto que un experto se inclinaba a sólo un tipo de ordenador, la acumulación de sus conocimientos tenía el efecto de hacer más atractivo ese ordenador tanto para él como para sus colegas. Por lo que los fabricantes tenían gran interés en difundir la codificación y el conocimiento de alguna máquina específica lo más que se pudiera en ese momento.
En segundo lugar Internet no existía. Aunque tenían menos restricciones legales que hoy para compartir sus trabajos, había más restricciones técnicas: Hablando comparativamente, los medios para adquirir datos de un lado para otro era difícil y trabajoso. Había algunas pequeñas redes locales, aptas para compartir información
entre empleados del mismo laboratorio de investigación o compañía. Pero quedaban por superar una serie de trabas si se hubiera querido compartir con alguien que trabajara
en otro lado. Estas trabas se superaban en muchos casos.
A veces eran grupos varios que se contactaban independientemente, enviándose discos o cintas por correo, y a veces eran los fabricantes mismos que servían como puestos centrales de intercambio de los aportes individuales. También era una ventaja que muchos de los que desarrollaban los primeros ordenadores trabajaban en las universidades, en donde era una costumbre publicar los avances. Pero la realidad de la transmisión de datos era que siempre que se los quería compartir se topaba con un impedimento que crecía proporcional a la distancia (física u organizacional) que el software tenía que
viajar. Era imposible compartir algo con todo el mundo y sin resistencias, tal como hoy se puede hacer.
El Florecimiento del Software Propietario y del Software Libre
A medida que maduraba la industria ocurrían
simultáneamente algunos cambios relacionados entre sí. La gran diversidad de los diseños del hardware finalmente cedieron el paso a unos pocos ganadores -ganadores por
tener una tecnología superior, o una comercialización superior, o una combinación de ambas cosas. Al mismo tiempo, no coincidente en su totalidad, el desarrollo de
los así llamados lenguajes de programación de “alto nivel” significaba que se podía escribir un programa de una sola vez en un lenguaje, y luego traducirlo automáticamente “compilarlo”) para que corra en diferentes tipos de ordenadores. Las consecuencias de esto no se quedaron perdidas en los fabricantes de
hardware: un usuario podía ahora emprender un mayor esfuerzo de ingeniería de software sin encerrarse en una arquitectura particular de ordenadores. Cuando esto se combinaba con un gradual acercamiento en la calidad de
funcionamiento de los ordenadores, y al tiempo que los diseños menos eficientes eran eliminados, un fabricante que se centraba en el hardware como único beneficio podía
detectar que se produciría una disminución de sus ganancias en el futuro. El poder de computación pura se convertía en un bien fungible, mientras que el software se convertía en el diferenciador. Aparecía como una buena
estrategia vender software, o al menos, tratarlo como parte integral de las ventas del hardware.
Esto significó que los productores tuvieron que ser más estrictos en defender los derechos de copia de los códigos. Si los usuarios hubieran continuado simplemente con su costumbre de compartir y modificar los códigos de manera libre y gratis, hubieran instalado en forma independiente las mejoras que ahora pezaban a ser vendidas como “valor agregado” por los proveedores. Peor aún, el código compartido podría caer en las manos de los competidores. La ironía es que eso ocurría al mismo tiempo que Internet estaba ganando terreno. Justamente, cuando se hacía técnicamente posible compartir el software y disminuían los obstáculos técnicos, los cambios en el mundo de los negocios hacían del compartir algo económicamente indeseable, por lo menos desde el punto de vista particular de una compañía. Los proveedores imponían sus controles, ya sea negando el acceso al código a los usuarios que ejecutaban el programa en sus máquinas, o mediante acuerdos de no
difundir el código, lo que hacía que el compartir fuera imposible.
Una resistencia conciente
Mientras se extinguía el mundo del intercambio de códigos se cristalizaba una contra reacción, al menos en la mente de un programador. Richard Stallman trabajaba en el Laboratorio de Inteligencia Artificial en el Instituto
Tecnológico de Massachussets en la década de 1970 e inicios de 1980, la época y el lugar de oro para la costumbre de compartir los códigos. El laboratorio de IA tenía una fuerte “ética de hackers”, y no solo se estimulaba al personal de los proyectos sino que se
esperaba que fueran compartidos todos los avances que le hicieran al sistema. Como luego escribía Stallman: No le llamábamos “software libre” a nuestro software porque ese término no existía; pero era precisamente eso.
Toda vez que alguien de otra universidad quería llevar y usar un programa, nosotros se lo ofrecíamos con gusto. Si se veía que alguien usaba un programa distinto e interesante, se le podía pedir el código fuente, para poder leerlo, cambiarlo o fusionar partes de él para
hacer un programa nuevo.

Esta comunidad edénica colapsó junto con Stallman poco después de 1980, cuando los cambios que venían ocurriendo
en el resto de la industria finalmente lcanzaron al laboratorio de IA. Una compañía que se iniciaba incorporaba a muchos de los programadores del laboratorio para trabajar en un sistema operativo similar al que habían desarrollado allí, sólo que ahora bajo una
licencia exclusiva. Al mismo tiempo, el laboratorio de IA adquiría nuevos equipos que llegaban con un sistema operativo propietario.
Stallman vio el panorama total de lo que staba
sucediendo: Los ordenadores modernos de la época, como el VAX o el 68020, venían con sus sistemas operativos propios, pero ninguno era un software libre: Se debía firmar el compromiso de no revelar los contenidos para
poder recibir una copia ejecutable.
Lo cual significaba que el primer paso para usar un ordenador era prometer que no había que ayudar al vecino.
La comunidad de cooperación estaba prohibida. La regla que establecían los dueños del software propietario era: "si compartes con tu vecino, eres un pirata. Si quieres cambios, nosotros los haremos, cuando los pidas.”
Y por su personalidad peculiar decidió ofrecer
resistencia a esta nueva ola. En lugar de continuar trabajando en el diezmado laboratorio de IA, o aceptar el trabajo de escribir códigos en alguna de las compañías
nuevas, en las que su trabajo iba a quedar encerrado en cuatro paredes, renunció al laboratorio y comenzó el proyecto GNU y la Fundación de Software Libre. El objetivo del GNU era desarrollar un sistema operativo
para los ordenadores y un cuerpo de software de aplicación completamente gratis y abierto, en el que nunca se impediría que los usuarios hagan y compartan sus modificaciones. En esencia, estaba empeñado en recrear lo
que se había destruido del laboratorio de IA, pero en una escala globalizada, y sin las vulnerabilidades que llevaban a un estado de posible desintegración a la cultura del laboratorio de IA.
Aparte de trabajar en el nuevo sistema operativo, Stallman inventó una licencia de copyright cuyos términos garantizaban que los códigos permanecerían gratis para siempre. La Licencia Pública General GNU es una ingeniosa
pieza de judo legal: dice que los códigos pueden ser copiados y modificados sin ninguna restricción y que ambas copias y trabajos derivados (a saber, versiones modificadas) deben ser distribuidas bajo la misma licencia que el original, sin poner restricciones
adicionales. En efecto, se usan las leyes del copyright para conseguir un efecto contrario al que apunta el copyright tradicional: en lugar de limitar la distribución del software, prohíbe que nadie, ni siquiera el autor, lo limite. Para Stallman, esto era mejor que si hubiera puesto su código en el dominio público. Si hubiera estado en el dominio público, cualquier copia
podría haber sido incorporada a los programas
propietarios (como ya se sabía que había sucedido con códigos que tenían licencias permisivas). Aunque una incorporación como éstas no hubiera disminuido la disponibilidad de los códigos originales, hubiera significado que los esfuerzos de Stallman iban a beneficiar al enemigo –al software propietario. La Licencia Pública General puede entenderse como una forma de proteccionismo del software libre, porque impide que el software no-libre se aproveche de los códigos que están bajo esta licencia. La Licencia Pública General y
su relación a otras licencias del software libre se discuten en detalle en el Capítulo 9, Licencias Copyright y Patentes.
Con la ayuda de nuevos programadores, alguno de los cuales compartían la ideología de Stallman y otros que simplemente querían ver abundante código disponible en forma gratuita, el Proyecto GNU comenzó entregando
versiones libres para reemplazar muchos de los componentes críticos de sistemas operativos. Gracias a la estandarización expandida del hardware y software para
ordenadores, se hizo posible usar los reemplazos GNU en sistemas no-libres, y mucha gente lo hizo. El editor de

Desafortunadamente el proyecto GNU había elegido un diseño de núcleo que resultó más difícil de implementar que lo esperado. La consiguiente demora impedía que la Fundación de Software Libre ofreciera la primera versión de un sistema operativo enteramente libre. La pieza final fue instalada en su lugar por Linus
Torvalds, un estudiante de computación finlandés quien con la ayuda de voluntarios de todo el mundo había completado un núcleo libre usando un diseño más conservador. Le llamó Linux, y cuando fue combinado con los programas GNU existentes tuvo como resultado un sistema operativo completamente libre. hecho, el GNU no fue el único grupo que trabajaba para producir un sistema operativo libre (por ejemplo, el código que luego fue NetBSD y FreeBSD estaba ya en desarrollo en ese momento). La importancia de la
Fundación de Software libre no solamente residía en los códigos que se escribían, sino en el tratamiento político del tema. Al hablar del software libre como una causa en lugar de una conveniencia, era casi imposible que los
programadores no tomen una postura política frente a ello. También los que no estaban de acuerdo con la Fundación de Software Libre tuvieron que comprometerse con la causa, aunque más no sea para proponer una
posición diferente. La efectividad que tuvo la Fundación de Software Libre en el proceso de difusión influyó en la vinculación del código con el mensaje, por medio de la Licencia Pública General y otros textos. Al mismo tiempo
que se difundían los códigos, se distribuía también el mensaje.
Resistencia accidental
Había muchas otras cosas en la escena naciente del software libre, sin embargo, pocas eran tan explícitas ideológicamente como el Proyecto GNU de Stallman. Una de las cosas mas importantes fue la Berkeley Software
Distribution (BSD), una reimplementación gradual del sistema operativo Unix, que hasta fines del decenio de 1970 había sido un proyecto de investigación sin restricciones de AT&T, hecho por programadores de la Universidad de Berkeley en California. Este grupo BSD no hizo una declaración política sobre la necesidad de que los programadores se unan y compartan unos con otros, pero practicaron la idea con talento y entusiasmo,
coordinando un esfuerzo de desarrollo distribuido masivamente en el cual un grupo en su mayoría voluntarios reescribieron los recursos de línea de comando del Unix y
sus bibliotecas y eventualmente también el núcleo del sistema operativo, rescatando material de los borradores.
El proyecto BSD resultó un primer ejemplo de desarrollo de un software libre no-ideológico, y también sirvió como campo de entrenamiento para muchos desarrolladores que continuarían activos en el mundo del software libre.
Otro emprendimiento de desarrollo cooperativo fue el X Window System, un entorno gráfico de computación desarrollado en el MIT a mediados de la década de 1980 en
coparticipación con empresas que tenían el interés común de estar en condiciones de ofrecer a sus clientes un sistema operativo con ventanas. Lejos de oponerse al software propietario, la licencia X permitía deliberadamente que se hicieran extensiones propietarias encima del núcleo libre –cada miembro del consorcio quería tener la oportunidad de mejorar la distribución X
predeterminada y consiguientemente ganar una ventaja competitiva con respecto a los otros miembros. El X Windows era un software libre, pero servía fundamentalmente para nivelar el campo de juego entre los
intereses de las empresas competidoras, y no estaba guiado por el deseo de poner fina a la dominación del software propietario. Todavía hay otro ejemplo, el TeX de Donald Knuth, un sistema de calidad de ediciones, que se
alimentaban del proyecto GNU. Ofreció una versión bajo una licencia que permitía que cualquiera modifique y distribuya el código, pero que no se llamara “TeX” a no
ser que superara una serie de tests de compatibilidad muy estricto (este es un ejemplo de una clase de licencias libres “protectoras de marcas registradas” de las que se hablará mas en el capítulo 9). Knuth no estaba tomando partido para un lado ni para el otro en la cuestión del software libre en contra del propietario, solo que necesitaba un sistema mejor de impresión para cumplir con
su objetivo real –un libro sobre programación de ordenadores- y no encontró razones en contra para presentar al mundo su sistema una vez que estuvo hecho.
Aún sin tener un listado completo de proyectos y licencias se puede afirmar con seguridad que para el fin de la década de los ’80 había una buena cantidad de software libre y una amplia variedad de licencias. La diversidad de licencias reflejaba una diversidad de motivaciones correspondientes. Incluso alguno de los
programadores que eligieron el GNU de la Licencia Pública General estaban mucho menos motivados ideológicamente que el proyecto GNU mismo. Aunque disfrutaban trabajando en
el software libre, muchos desarrolladores no consideraron que el software propietario era una lacra social. Había quienes sentían un impulso moral de liberar al mundo del
“acaparamiento de software” (un término que usaba Stallman para el software no libre), pero otros estaban más motivados por un entusiasmo técnico, o por el placer de trabajar con colaboradores de pensamiento afín, o
simplemente por el deseo humano de la gloria. Pero las motivaciones disparatadas no intervinieron en forma destructiva en todo este confín. Esto se explica en parte porque, al revés de lo que acontece en otras formas
creativas como la prosa o las artes visuales, el software debe superar pruebas semi-objetivas para ser considerado un éxito: debe funcionar y estar razonablemente libre de errores. Esto otorga a todos los participantes del proyecto una especie de pie de igualdad común, una razón y un encuadre para trabajar juntos sin preocuparse mucho de otros títulos que no sean los conocimientos técnicos.
Además, los desarrolladores tenían otra razón para permanecer juntos: acontecía que el mundo del software libre estaba produciendo códigos de muy alta calidad. En algunos casos se podía demostrar que eran técnicamente
superiores a las mejores alternativas del software no libre que les pisaban los talones; en otros casos estaban al menos al mismo nivel, y por supuesto, costaban menos.
Mientras que solo unos pocos pudieron estar motivados para usar software libre por razones estrictamente filosóficas, la gran mayoría se sentía feliz de poder usarlos porque tenían un mejor desempeño. Y entre los usuarios, siempre había un porcentaje dispuesto a donar su tiempo y habilidad para ayudar a mantener y mejorar el software.
Esta tendencia de producir buenos códigos no era ciertamente universal, pero se repetía por todas partes con frecuencia en aumento en los proyectos de software libre. Las empresas que dependían fuertemente del software lo empezaron a notar gradualmente. Muchos de
ellos descubrieron que ya estaban usando software libre en las operaciones de todos los días, sólo que no lo sabían (los gerentes de alto rango no siempre saben todo lo que ocurre en las dependencias de la tecnología
informática). Las corporaciones comenzaron a tomar cartas activas en los proyectos del software libre, contribuyendo con tiempo y equipos, y a veces subvencionando directamente el desarrollo de programas
libres. Estas inversiones podían, en el mejor de los casos, devolverles muchas horas de tiempo extra. Las subvenciones solo pagaban a una cantidad pequeña de programadores expertos para que dedicaran su trabajo de tiempo completo, pero cosechaban los beneficios de las contribuciones de todos, incluso de voluntarios no pagos, y programadores pagados por otras corporaciones.
“Libre” versus “Fuente abierta”
Cuando las corporaciones prestaron mayor atención a los programadores de software libre tuvieron que enfrentarse con las nuevas ideas que venían con su presentación. Una
de ellas fue la palabra “libre”. Al escuchar por primera vez el término “software libre” muchos pensaron erróneamente que solamente significaba “software de costo cero”. Es verdad que todo software libre tiene un costo
cero, pero no todo el software gratis es libre. Por ejemplo, durante la guerra de los navegadores de la década del '90 Netscape y Microsoft repartían gratis sus navegadores en la disputa de ganar la mayor participación
en el mercado. Ninguno de estos navegadores era libre, en el sentido que tiene el “software libre”. La fuente no era accesible, y aunque lo fuera, no existía el derecho de modificarla y redistribuirla. Lo único permitido era bajar los programas ejecutables y hacerlos funcionar. Los navegadores no eran más libres que los software empaquetados y comprimidos que se compran en un negocio; sólo que el precio era mas bajo.
Esta confusión en la palabra “libre” se debe a una desafortunada ambigüedad de lenguaje, en este caso del inglés. En otras lenguas romances aparece la diferencia entre precio bajo y libertad porque existen las palabras
"gratis" y “libre” que se distinguen con facilidad. Pero siendo el inglés el lenguaje puente dentro de Internet, pasó esto a repercutir en otros lados ya que un problema
del inglés resultaba también un problema para los demás.
Este malentendido suscitado por la palabra “libre” era tan penetrante para los angloparlantes que los programadores de software desarrollaron una formula estándar que repetían: Es libre (free) como la libertad,
no como la cerveza (free) gratis. Aún ahora, tener que explicar esto una y otra vez resulta fatigante. Muchos programadores sentían, no sin razón, que la palabra ambigua (en inglés) “libre” (free) estaba obstaculizando la comprensión que público tenía respecto a este
software.
Pero este problema se profundizó más aún. La palabra “libre” llevaba consigo una inevitable connotación moral: si la libertad era un bien en si mismo, pasaba a segundo lugar la consideración de si el software era mejor o más conveniente para ciertos asuntos o circunstancias. Estos últimos efectos aparecían como secundarios, relegados por otras motivaciones que no eran en el fondo ni técnicas ni comerciales, sino morales. Más todavía, la postura de “libre como la libertad” llevaba a una flagrante incoherencia dado que las corporaciones que subvencionaban algunos programas libres para algunas áreas de sus negocios también continuaban comercializando
software propietario en otras.
Estos dilemas llovían sobre de una comunidad que ya estaba debilitada por una crisis de identidad. Los programadores que escriben actualmente el software libre no se sienten necesariamente identificados con el
objetivo central –si lo hay- del movimiento del software libre. Sería engañoso decir que las opiniones van de un extremo al otro, porque esto implicaría la falsedad de imaginar que nos movemos en una línea de pensamiento, cuando en realidad es una distribución multidimensional.
Sin embargo, si estamos dispuestos de obviar las sutilezas, por el momento pueden diferenciarse dos categorías ampliamente distintas. Un grupo se alinea en el punto de vista de Stallman, para quien la libertad de
participar y modificar es lo mas importante, y por lo tanto si no se habla de libertad se está esquivando el núcleo principal de la cuestión. Otros piensan que el software es el argumento más importante a su favor, y se sienten incómodos con la proclamación del software
propietario como algo inherentemente malo. Algunos de los programadores de software, auque no todos, creen que el autor (o el empleador, en el caso de trabajo pagado)
debería tener el derecho de controlar las cláusulas de la distribución y que no se necesita agregar un juicio moral en la selección de algunas cláusulas particulares.
Por mucho tiempo no se necesitó examinar o articular estas diferencias, pero el éxito floreciente del software libre hizo que esta cuestión fuera inevitable. En 1998 un
grupo de programadores, que llegaron a constituir La Iniciativa de la Fuente Abierta (OSI, por su sigla en inglés) creó el término “fuente abierta” como una alternativa para la “libre”. La Iniciativa de la Fuente Abierta creía que el término “software libre” llevaba una
confusión potencial, y que la palabra “libre” era
justamente un síntoma de un problema general: que el movimiento necesitaba un programa de mercado para lanzarlo en el mundo de las grandes empresas, y que
hablar de moral y de beneficios sociales del compartir no iba a tener vuelo en las salas de las empresas. Tomando sus propias palabras:
La Iniciativa de la Fuente Abierta es un programa de mercado para el software libre. Significa fundar el “software libre” sobre bases sólidas y prácticas más que en una discusión acalorada. La esencia ganadora no ha cambiado, la actitud de perdedores y su simbolismo lo ha hecho ...
La aclaración que debe hacerse a muchos técnicos no es acerca del concepto de fuente abierta, sino sobre el nombre. ¿Por qué no llamarle, como se ha hecho tradicionalmente, software libre?
Una razón definitiva es que el término “software libre” se confunde fácilmente de manera que lleva a terrenos conflictivos. ...
Pero la verdadera razón del cambio de cartel es una razón de comercialización. Estamos ahora tratando de lanzar nuestro concepto al mundo corporativo. Tenemos un producto ganador, pero nuestra posición, en el pasado, ha sido terrible. El término “software libre” se ha malentendido entre las personas de negocios quienes confunden el deseo de compartir con una conducta anticomercial, o peor, que era un robo.
La alta plana directiva de las empresas nunca compraría un “software libre”. Pero si seguimos la misma tradición, la misma gente y las mismas licencias de software libre y le cambiáramos el nombre poniéndole “fuente abierta”, entonces sí lo comprarían.
Algunos hackers encuentran esto difícil de creer, porque son técnicos que piensan en concreto, con términos substanciales, y no entienden la importancia de la imagen que algo tiene en el momento de venderlo.
Para el mercado la apariencia es la realidad. La
apariencia de que estamos dispuestos a bajarnos de nuestras barricadas y a trabajar con el mundo corporativo importa tanto como la realidad de nuestras conductas o convicciones, y de nuestro software.

En este texto aparece la punta de muchos icebergs de la controversia. Se refiere a “nuestras convicciones”, pero discretamente evita decir con exactitud de que convicciones se trata. Para algunos, puede ser la convicción de que el código desarrollado en concordancia
con un proceso abierto será un código mejor; para otros pudiera ser la convicción de que toda información debiera ser compartida. Aparece el uso del término “robo” para
referirse (posiblemente) al copiado ilegal –una costumbre que muchos objetan alegando que pese a todo no es un robo si el propietario original todavía tiene el artículo. Hay
una sospecha inquietante que el movimiento de software libre podría ser acusado por equivocación de anticomercialismo, aunque queda por examinar detenidamente la cuestión si esta acusación tendría alguna base en los hechos.
Lo que no quiere decir que el sitio web OSI es
incoherente o engañoso. No lo es. Más bien es exactamente un ejemplo de lo que OSI reclama como perdido en el movimiento de software libre. Una buena comercialización, en donde “buena” significa viable en el mundo de los
negocios. La Iniciativa de Fuente Abierta brindó a mucha gente exactamente lo que buscaban –un vocabulario para referirse al software libre como una metodología de
desarrollo y una estrategia para los negocios, en lugar de una cruzada moral.
La aparición de la Iniciativa de Fuente Libre cambió el panorama del software libre. Formalizó una dicotomía que por mucho tiempo no tuvo un nombre, y al hacerlo forzaba
al movimiento a reconocer que tenía una política interna al mismo tiempo que una externa. Hoy, el efecto es que ambos lados han tenido que encontrar un terreno común,
puesto que la mayoría de los proyectos incluye a programadores de ambos campos, como también a otros participantes que no encajan claramente en una categoría.
Esto no impide que se hable de motivaciones morales –por ejemplo a veces aparecen convocatorias con recaídas en la tradicional “ética de hackers”. Pero es raro que un
desarrollador de software libre / fuente abierta entre a cuestionar abiertamente las motivaciones básicas de otros. La contribución encubre al contribuidor. Si alguien escribe un buen código, no se le pregunta si lo hace por razones morales o porque su empleador le paga, o porque está engrosando su currículum, o lo que sea. Se evalúa la contribución en términos técnicos, y se responde con fundamentos técnicos. Inclusive
organizaciones políticas como el proyecto Debían, cuyo objetivo es ofrecer un entorno computacional 100% libre (“libre como la libertad”), no tienen peros para integrarse con el código no libre y cooperar con programadores que no comparten exactamente los mismos objetivos.
La situación de Hoy
Cuando se maneja un proyecto libre, no se necesita hablar todos los días sobre esos enfoques filosóficos. Los programadores no pretenden que todos los integrantes del
proyecto estén de acuerdo con sus puntos de vista en todos los aspectos (aquellos que insisten en hacerlo se encuentran rápidamente incapacitados para trabajar en cualquier proyecto). Pero se necesita estar advertido que la cuestión de “libre” versus “fuente abierta” existe, en parte para evitar decir cosas que pueden enemistarlo a uno con algún otro participante, y en parte porque un entendimiento con los demás y sus motivaciones es la mejor manera, y en cierto sentido la única manera de llevar adelante el proyecto.
El software libre es una cultura por elección. Para trabajar con éxito en esta cultura hay que entender por qué hay personas que la eligen en primer lugar. Las técnicas coercitivas no tienen efecto. Si hay alguien que no se siente cómodo en un proyecto, recurre a otro. El
software libre se distingue incluso entre las comunidades de voluntarios por sus inversiones limitadas. Muchos de los participantes nunca se encuentran cara a cara, y simplemente hacen donación de algún tiempo cada vez que se sienten motivados. Los conductos normales que conectan a los seres humanos entre si y se concretan en grupos duraderos se reducen a un pequeño canal: la palabra escrita, trasmitida por cables eléctricos. Por esto puede llevar mucho tiempo para formar un grupo dedicado y
unido. Y a la inversa, es muy fácil que un proyecto pierda un voluntario potencial en los cinco primeros minutos de haberse encontrado. Si el proyecto no impacta
con una buena impresión, los recién llegados no ofrecen otra oportunidad.
La transitoriedad real o potencial de las relaciones es quizás la tarea más desalentadora que se debe enfrentar en un nuevo proyecto. ¿Cómo se persuade a toda esa gente a permanecer juntos el tiempo suficiente necesario para producir algo útil? La respuesta es tan compleja como para ocupar el resto de este libro, pero si se tiene que
expresar en una sola frase, sería la siguiente:
Las personas deben sentir que su conexión con un proyecto, y su influencia sobre él, es directamente proporcional a sus contribuciones.
Ningún desarrollador, real o potencial, debe sentir que no es tenido en cuenta o es discriminado por razones que no sean técnicas. Con claridad, los proyectos con apoyo
de empresas y/o desarrolladores pagos tienen que ser especialmente cuidadosos en este aspecto, como se discute
en detalle en el Capítulo 5, El Dinero. Por supuesto, esto no quiere decir que da lo mismo si no hay apoyo de empresas, y que si lo hay todo está arreglado. El dinero es sólo uno de los tantos factores que pueden afectar el éxito de un proyecto. Otras cuestiones son el lenguaje que se va a elegir, la licencia, cuál será el proceso de desarrollo, qué tipo de infraestructura hay que instalar, cómo promocionar efectivamente el inicio del proyecto, y muchas otras cosas más. El contenido del próximo capítulo será cómo dar el primer paso con el pié derecho al comenzar un proyecto.

Cactus: living fodder bank for arid and semi-arid environment

Introduction
The future of arid and semiarid regions depends on the development of sustainable agricultural systems and on the cultivation of appropriate crops. Such crops must successfully withstand water shortage, high temperature, and poor soil fertility. Cacti can satisfy these requirements and are becoming increasingly important for both subsistence and market-oriented activities in arid and semiarid regions (Barbera, 1995). This contribution focuses on the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region, large portions of which have winters with low and erratic rainfall and hot, dry summers. It is characterized by high population growth, limited areas of arable land, harsh deserts, and limited water resources for irrigation development (Nordblom and Shomo 1995). The WANA region contains most of the more than l.5 million hectares (ha) utilized worldwide for raising Opuntia ficus-indica for forage and fodder for livestock.
As much as 50% of arid rangeland in the WANA region may have lost its vegetation since World War II, while concomitantly the human population has increased fourfold (Le Houérou, 1991). In this regard, the sheep population has increased by 75% and the stocking rate has jumped from one sheep per 4 ha to one sheep per ha between 1950 and 1989. Indeed, the contribution of such rangelands to the annual feed requirements of livestock is in decline, going from 80% in 1965 to less than 25% of the requirement in 2000. Overgrazing and range deterioration have forced pastoralists to change their migration and feeding patterns in some countries, the forage diet of animals is heavily supplemented with barley grain and other commercial concentrated feeds. A typical feed calendar for agropastoral systems of arid and semiarid regions of the W ANA region also includes supplementation with cactus in May through September.
The search for plant species with the ability to grow and produce in arid areas has been a permanent concern in most W ANA countries. The characteristics of cacti fit most of the requirements of a drought-resistant fodder crop, as described by De Kock (1980): (1) the crop must not only be able to withstand long droughts, but it must also be able to produce large quantities of fodder during periods of favorable rainfall that can be utilized during drought periods; (2) the crop must have a high carrying ca¬pacity; (3) the crop must not have an adverse effect on the health of the animals consuming it; (4) extensive utiliza¬tion should not have an adverse effect on the plants, i.e., the plants must have high recovery ability; (5) establish¬ment and maintenance of the plantations must be cost effective and should have a low initial cost; and (6) the crop must be relatively undemanding with respect to soil and climatic requirements. Using these criteria, Opuntia ficus-indica has proved to be an important fodder crop in Tunisia, such as for feeding sheep.
Increasing Usage of Cacti in Arid Zones
Cacti grow in "deserts" and are drought tolerant. Indeed, they possess a specialized photosynthetic mechanism, which leads to a more efficient production of dry matter per unit water consumed than that of grasses or legumes (Russell and Felker 1987; Nobel 1988, 1989; Chapter 4). Cacti produce fodder, fruit, and other useful products. They also can prevent the long-term degradation of eco¬logically weak environments. Cacti in general and Opuntia spp. in particular were introduced into the WANA region by Spanish moors in the 16th century (Le Houérou 1992). Nevertheless, only toward the end of the 20th century have large plantations been established. These create evergreen fodder banks to feed animals during drought and combat desertification as well.
Opuntia spp. used for animal feeding are abundant, easy and cheap to grow, palatable, and able to withstand prolonged droughts (Shoop et al. 1977). Such characteris¬tics make them a potentially important feed supplement for livestock, particularly during periods of drought and seasons of low feed availability. The cladodes constitute the majority of the biomass of an Opuntia and can be fed to livestock as fresh forage or stored as silage for later feeding (Castra et al. 1977). In any case, the idea of using cactus to feed livestock is not recent and goes back to the 18th century (Griffith, 1905; Curtis, 1979; Le Houérou, 1979; Brutsh, 1984; Russell and Felker, 1987; Clovis de Andrade, 1990; Barbera et al., 1992; Flores Valdez and Aguirre Rivera, 1992).
Large areas of cactus are available year-round in Algeria, Mexico, and especially Brazil and Tunisia and serve as an emergency feedstock in case of drought (Table 1). In many arid areas (e.g., Tunisia, Mexico, South Texas, South Africa), farmers make extensive use of cacti as emergency forage, harvesting it from both wild and cultivated populations to prevent the disastrous consequences of frequent and severe droughts (Le Houérou 1992). Since 1900 in North Africa, shrubs (mainly Acacia cyanophylla and Atriplex nummularia or A. halimus) and cacti (mainly Opuntia ficus-indica var. inermis) have been planted to reduce water and wind erosion and rangeland degradation. About 1 million ha have been planted in Algeria, Morocco, Libya, and Tunisia (Table 1). These plantations in low rainfall areas also provide feed for livestock during frequent drought periods. Because of their high water-use efficiency (Nobel 1988, 1989), the aboveground productivity of cacti tends to be much higher than that of most other plant species in arid and semiarid regions. For example, under rainfed conditions in Tunisia and with no fertilizer application, spineless cactus yields vary from 20 to 100 tons fresh weight of cladodes per ha per year as rainfalls increase from 150 to 400 mm per year.
Marginal lands often represent fragile ecosystems. ploughing and indiscriminate vegetation removal can result in large-scale degradation and destruction of vegetation cover. The scarcity and even disappearance of several plant species indicate the magnitude of genetic and edaphic losses (Le Houérou, 1991). To reverse the desertification trend and to restore vegetation cover in such areas, appropriate integrated programs are needed for rangeland monitoring, livestock control, and conservation of natural resources.
Spineless cactus (o. ficus-indica), which is drought and erosion tolerant, is being advantageously and widely established in Tunisia and Algeria to slow and direct sand movement, to enhance the restoration of the vegetation cover, and to avoid the destruction by water of the land terraces built to reduce runoff. In central and southern Tunisia, cactus plantations play a key role in natural resources conservation as well as provide a large amount of fodder for livestock. The strong rooting system of cacti helps stabilize land terraces. One or two rows of cladodes are planted on the inner side of the terraces. The rooting system is enhanced by the collection of the water at the base of the terrace. Roots are widespread oh the elevated part of the terrace and go deeply into the soil, en¬suring stability of the terraces. As an additional benefit, cut and carried cladodes from such plantings provide sufficient feed resources during dry spells. Cacti are also used in combination with cement barriers or date palm fronds to stop wind erosion and sand movement (Nefzaoui and Ben Salem, 2002)
Use of Cacti as Fodder
Nutrient Contents
Cacti cladodes are an unbalanced feed nutrient wise but a cost-effective source of energy and water. Cladodes are low in crude protein, fiber, phosphorus, and sodium (Le Houérou 1992; Nefzaoui et al. 1995). Therefore, diets containing cactus should be balanced for these nutrients by appropriate supplements. The water content on a fresh weight basis averages nearly 90% (Table 2). The ash content is about 20% of the dry weight. The crude protein is often below 5% but can be up to 10% of the dry weight (Table 2). The fiber content is also relatively low, about 10% of the dry weight. The nitrogen-free extract, which includes monomeric and polymerie sugars, is about 60% of the dry weight. Cladodes' low content of phosphorous (about 0.3% of the dry weight) and sodium (about 0.01%) requires supplementation when they are fed to animals.
The ash content of cladodes is high, mainly because of the high calcium (Ca) content. Cladodes also have high levels of oxalates (Ben Salem et al. 2002). For example, the oxalate amount is about 13% of the dry weight and 40 % is in soluble form (the high amount of oxalates may explain the laxative effect of cladodes when fed to animals). The oxalates mostly contain Ca, making this cation less available to animals. Nevertheless, the Ca content of cladodes is generally higher than animal requirements. An excess of Ca is not a problem per se, but an unbalanced Ca/P ratio, which is generally about 35 for cladodes, needs to be corrected. De Kock and Aucamp (1970) reported the same problem with O. ficus-indica and suggested using licks for P and Na. These licks may be made from the following ingredients: salt, monosodium phosphate, molasses, dicalcium phosphate, and bonemeal. According to Shoop et al. (1977), most other minerals in cladodes (e.g., manganese, copper, zinc, magnesium, and iron) have concentrations within the range generally acceptable in the diets of ruminants. An exception is sodium content, which is relatively low (0.02% for O. polyacantha).
Crude fiber content (Table 3) is actually a poor indicator of feed fiber quality. For instance, the fibers cellulose and lignin have low digestibility. For five platyopuntias (Opuntia engelmannii, O. filipendula, O. fragilis, O. polyacantha, and O. versicolor), cellulose averages 11 % of the dry weight, hemicellulose averages 18 %, and lignin averages 3.9 % (Ben Thlija, 1987); in comparison, for alfalfa these values are 22%, 15%, and 7.9%, respectively.
Although the protein content of cladodes is generally low (Table 3), it tends to increase after nitrogen fertilization. For instance, N and P fertilizers can increase crude protein contents of Opuntia cladodes from 4.5 to 10.5% of the dry weight (Gonzalez, 1989). Also, Gregory and Felker (1992) found that some clones from Brazil have over 11 % crude protein. In the W ANA region, large plantations of Opuntia are utilized for fodder production in dry areas where soil quality, rainfall, and finances argue against fertilizer application.
Therefore, increasing the nitrogen content of cladodes through selection or hybridization is more promising. Protein deficiency can also be solved through appropriate supplementation and/or feed combinations. Wehren (1976) showed that the amino acid composition of cladodes of O. ficus-indica var. inermis is quite satisfactory for animals; the proteins of three cultivars contained an average of 10.6% aspartic acid, 13.0% glutamic acid, 4.3% threonine, 4.3% serine, 6.5% proline, 4.8% glycine, 7.8% alanine, 0.8% cystine, 7.0% valine, 2.1% methionine, 5.2% isoleucine, 8.3% leucine, 4.1% tyrosine, 5.1% phenylalanine, 5.9% lysine, 2.3% his¬tidine, and 5.5% arginine.
The nutritive quality of Opuntia cladodes depends on plant type (species, varieties), cladode age, season, and agronomic conditions (e.g., soil type, climate, and growing conditions). In Tunisia, the percentage dry weight is highest and crude protein content is lowest during the summer season; the ash content tends to be highest in the spring and crude fiber content highest in the winter (Ben Salem et al. 1996b). The percentage dry weight increases as cladodes age. Also, when cladode age increases from l to 5 years, crude protein content of O. ficus-indica var. inermis decreases (from 5 to 3% of dry weight) and crude fiber increases (from 9 to 20%; A. Nefzaoui, unpublished obser¬vations). This trend is similar to that for other fodder sources, where nutrients decrease with plant age resulting from the relative increase in fiber content (Nefzaoui and Ben Salem 1998).
Intake and Digestibility
Animals can consume large amounts of cladodes. For instance, Jersey cows fed on cladodes and supplemented with 1 kg day-l of concentrated feed consume 51 kg fresh weight day-l of the cladodes (Woodward et al., 1915). Metral (1965) similarly found a voluntary intake of 60 kg day-l when cladodes alone are fed to cows. Viana (1965) reported an average voluntary intake of 77 kg day-l for cows. For sheep, Monjauze and Le Houérou (1965) reported cladode intakes of 2.5 to 9 kg day-l. Valdez and Flores (1967) observed higher intake with O. ficus-indica (11 kg day-l) than with O. robusta (6.5 kg day-l). Intakes are higher when the water content of the cladodes is high (A. Nefzaoui and H. Ben Salem, unpublished observations). Cladode consumption can have a laxative effect on sheep, leading to a more rapid passage of the food through the animal's digestive tract. This leads to poorer digestion, especially when the cladodes constitute more than 60% of the dry matter intake; supplementing with fibrous feed (e.g., straw or hay) can alleviate such laxative effects.
Sheep fed straw consume up to 600 g dry weight of cladodes without any digestive disturbance (Cordier, 1947). Supplementation of poor quality roughages with molasses increased their palatability (Preston and Leng 1987; Rangnekar 1988), so cladodes with their high carbohydrate contents may have similar effects as molasses. The energy content of cladodes is 3,500 to 4,000 kcal kg-l dryweight, just over half of which is digestible and comes mainly from carbohydrates (De Kock 1983; Ben Thlija 1987). In arid and semiarid regions of North Africa, cereal crop residues and natural pastures generally do not meet the nutrient requirements of small ruminants for meat production. Cladodes can provide a east-effective supplementation, such as for raising sheep and goats on rangelands. For instance, when diets of grazing sheep are supplemented with cladode cakes, the daily weight gain increases nearly 5°% (to 145 g day-l; Tien et al. 1993); when cladodes are supplied to grazing goats that have access to alfalfa hay, the milk yield is increased by 45% (to 436 g day-l; Azocar et al. 1991). When cladodes are associated with a protein-rich feedstuff, they may replace barley grains (Ben Salem et al. 1998) or maize silage (Metral 1965) without affecting sheep and cattle daily weight gains. For instance, milk yield for lactating goats supplied with 2.2 kg alfalfa hay day-l is actually slightly higher (1,080 g day-l) when 0.7 kg cladodes replaces an equal mass of alfalfa (Azocar et al. 1996).
When sheep are offered increasing amounts of clad¬odes, their intake of the accompanying straw also increases (Table 3). The dry matter intake of straw plus clado¬des steadily increases as the amount of cladodes supplied increases. The cladodes are highly digestible, with similar digestibilities for organic matter, crude protein, and crude fiber, ranging from 45 to 64% (Table 3). Digestibility of cladodes by sheep is similar to that for common forage crops. The main difference between cactus and other forage crops is the timing of the degradability of nutrients in the rumen. For other forage crops, maximal degradability in the rumen requires about 48 hours, whereas nutrients in cladodes are degraded very rapidly (between 6 and 12 hours) and little additional nutrient extraction occurs after 24 hours (Ben Thlija 1987). Similarly, 80% of the total digestion of singed Great Plains prickly pear (Opuntia polyacantha) by cattle occurs during the first 16 hours (Shoop et al. 1977).
A rapid rate of digestion leads to a faster passage of the material through the digestive tract, leading to more available volume for further intake. Because of the low gut fill of cladodes, an increase of cactus in the diet does not necessarily reduce the intake of other components of the ration (Table 3). This is of great importance for arid zones where livestock is fed mainly with straw or cereal stubble, which are low quality coarse feeds that have poor intakes, resulting in low animal daily weight gains.
Cladode Consumption and Sheep Rumen Fermentation
Ben Salem et al. (1996a) studied the effect of increasing the level of spineless cladodes on rumen fermentation in sheep given straw ad libitum. The cactus improves rumen fermentation (Table 3), as also occurs for sheep on an Acacia cyanophylla-based diet supplemented with cladodes and urea (Ben Salem 1998). In both cases the rumen fluid pH is not affected by up to 600 g dry weight of cladodes day-l, remaining at 6.9. The cladodes are rich in eas¬ily fermentable carbohydrates, and their consumption probably enhances salivation.
Compared with a cactus-free diet, the highest supply of cladodes doubles the concentration of ammonia nitrogen in the rumen of sheep fed diets based on straw (Ben Salem et al. 1996a) or acacia (Ben Salem 1998). This leads to ammonia concentrations near optimal for microbial growth and fiber digestion in the rumen (Satter and Slyter 1974; Ushida and Jouany 1985). Indeed, the protozoa counts per volume increases fourfold as the amount of cladodes ingested exceeds 300 g dryweight day-l (Table 3). Adding cladodes to the diet can increase the volatile fatty acids (such as propionic acid) by up to 30%, reflecting the increased intake of soluble carbohydrates.
Ben Salem et al. (I996a) used an in sacco technique (0rskov et al. 1980) to study the effect of cladode supply on cellulolytic activity in the rumen of sheep on a straw-based diet. The degradability of cellulose is adversely affected by increasing amounts of cladodes in the diet (Table 3), although the rate of degradation is not affected. The impairment of cellulolytic activity in the rumen as the cladode intake increases may be because the increasing ciliate protozoa have a negative effect on the number of bacteria in the rumen and thus on cellulose degradation. The high level of minerals in cladodes may also decrease microbial growth in the rumen (Komisarczuk-Bony and Durand 1991). In any case, a combination of O. ficus-indica and cereal straw is a nutritionally satisfactory solution for maintaining small ruminants in arid regions. Indeed, supplying cladodes can improve the nutritive value and intake of the poor quality roughages.
Cladodes as a Water Source
Water scarcity can depress feed intake, digestion, and therefore weight gains of sheep and goats (Wilson, 1970; EI-Nouty et al., 1988; Silanikove, 1992). Thus, supplying livestock with water during the summer and during drought periods is crucial in the WANA region and other arid regions. Animals consume considerable energy to reach water points. Moreover, rangeland degradation in the area surrounding water points is a serious problem. Therefore, the high water content of cladodes is beneficial in dry areas. Cattle given abundant supplies of cladodes require little (Cottier, 1934) or no (Woodward et al., 1915) additional water. Sheep fed for a long period (400 to 500 days) with large amounts of cladodes stop drinking (Roussow, 1961; Harvard-Duclos, 1969). Also, water intake by sheep on a wheat straw diet becomes extremely low when the daily in¬take of cladodes is 300 g dry weight day-l or more, consistent with other findings (Terblanche et al. 1971). Similarly, sheep on an Acacia cyanophylla diet require 1.2 liter water day-l when supplemented with barley but only 0.6 liter day-l when supplemented with cladodes (Ben Salem et al., 2002).
Feeding cactus cladodes may improve animal products quality.
Recent investigation jointly conducted by INRA Tunisia and the University of Catania (Italy) showed that the consumption of cactus cladodes increases the amount of omega 3 in lambs and kids meat (Ben Salem et al., 2005, unpublished). This encouraging result (figure 1) is of high importance and meets the ultimate goal, which is human health concern. Indeed, it is established now that “CLA is the only fatty acid shown unequivocally to inhibit carcinogenesis in experimental animals”. Other positive effects of CLA are the (i) reduction of cancer risk, (ii) reduction of diabetes, and reduction of arteriosclerosis.
Some Practical Considerations
The method of utilization of cladodes for livestock will differ according to circumstances, such as available labor, facilities, and quantity of cactus available. Although grazing of cladodes in situ is the simplest method, it is not the most efficient and care should be taken so that the animals do not overgraze the plants. The harvested cladodes may be cut into small pieces or strips and fed in a confined area to limit wastage. The cladodes can also be cut into smaller pieces and mixed with hay or low-quality alfalfa to make silage (if no fruits are included, molasses is usually added), which is maintained anaerobically. Cladodes fed in various forms can keep animals alive for long periods. To supplement cladodes fed ad libitum, alfalfa or hay can provide protein and a lick of equal parts by mass of bone meal, salt, and fodder lime can provide phosphate and sodium (De Kock, 1983).
It is cheapest to store cladodes as parts of living plants instead of after harvesting. Once harvested, chopped cladodes can be dried and then ground, e.g., using a hammermill with a sieve having 6-mm-diameter pores. Cladodes in the form of meal are not only more easily ingested but also are easier to store for use during droughts. Good quality silage can be made by chopping the pads together with oat straw, low-grade lucerne hay, or other roughage using 84 parts by mass of cladodes and 16 of roughage with the addition of 2% molasses.
The easiest and cheapest way to utilize cactus is grazing. However, overgrazing of the plantation must be guarded against. Young plants are especially susceptible to overgrazing and can be killed by sheep. Even older plants can be so badly damaged that the subsequent production will be considerably lower. The best method for grazing is to divide the plantation into small paddocks and to graze each of these intensively for a few months every 3 years or so. Direct browsing necessitates a very tight control on grazing, otherwise wastage may reach 50% of the fodder produced (cladodes partially eaten and abandoned) and the plantation itself may be destroyed by over-browsing (Monjauze and Le Houérou 1965; De Kock, 1980). This type of management has a very low cost and the grass between the shrubs is available to the stock. Plants in a paddock can be grazed to one cladode higher than the original planting so that the plants recover well, the material used is of good quality, and the plants are kept within a usable size. Zero grazing (the cut and carry technique) has the opposite consequences. Loss of feed is virtually nil and risk of overutilization is small, except when young plantations are harvested too early. Even though the zero-grazing technique is labor-intensive, in most cases in North Africa it is the recommended method because of insufficient grazing discipline.
Integration of cactus with other Feed Resources in the WANA Region
In the WANA region climatic conditions lead to two feed gaps each year: (i) in the winter (2-4 months) and (ii) an even larger one in the summer plus autumn (5-6 months). These gaps require large amounts of supplemental feed. National strategies aimed to increase range¬land productivity have focused on highly producing species, such as Acacia cyanophylla, Atriplex nummularia (or A. halimus), and spineless cactus. Several techniques for planting shrubs and cacti are used:
(i) on communal rangelands, where introduced species are planted in rows without removal of natural herbaceous or woody natural species;
(ii) on private land an alley-cropping technique is preferred, where farmers can cultivate the area between rows when the rainfall conditions are favorable;
(iii) when soil conservation is crucial, plantings are done for both types following the contour lines;
(iv) the oldest type ("bosquet") involves a dense planting of cactus around the house for fruit and for fodder for animals. Clearly, integrating cactus with other resources in the feeding system is beneficial.
Poor-quality roughage may be supplemented with cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica var. inermis. Indeed, the intake of straw goes up significantly with the increase of the amount of cladodes in the diet (Nefzaoui et al. 1993; Ben Salem et al. 1996). Cladodes are also a good supple¬ment to ammonia- or urea-treated straw, because they pro¬vide the necessary soluble carbohydrates for the efficient use of non protein nitrogen in the rumen (Nefzaoui et al. 1993). For Barbarine sheep, voluntary intake of cladodes (presented ad libitum) remains high (450 g dry weight day-1) when 250 or 480 g day-1 of untreated, urea- or ammonia-treated straw is ingested (Nefzaoui et al. 1993). Diets containing 64% cladodes and straw cause no digestive disturbance. Maintenance energy requirements for sheep are met with the low level of straw intake, and for high level the energy intake is 80% above the maintenance level. Urea- or ammonia-treated straw is necessary to reduce the nitrogen deficit. When the untreated straw plus cladode diet is supplemented with Atriplex nummularia (about 300 g dry weight day-1) as the nitrogen source, even more nitrogen is retained in the sheep and the digestibility of organic matter and crude protein exceeds 70% (Nefzaoui and Ben Salem 1996). For 4-month-old lambs, when cladodes replace the more expensive barley grain, 10 to 15% more organic matter is taken up and daily weight gain averages 15% higher (Table ). Opuntias such as O. ficus-indica can also be important for goats raised under harsh conditions.
Supplementing Alpine x local goats on native rangeland with cladodes and A. nummularia (100 g dry weight of each per day) substantially increases the daily weight gains of these animals (by 25-60 g day-1; Ben Salem et al. 2000), so fresh O. ficus-indica and other local feeds can have economic advantages for livestock feeding.
Cactus in alley cropping: a promising technology
Alley cropping is an agroforestry practice where perennial crops are simultaneously grown with an arable crop. The practice is such that trees are grown in wide rows with crop grown in the inter-space. Alley cropping is a form of hedgerow intercropping. Leguminous and fast growing tree/shrub species are preferred for this practice. These species are identified for use due to their soil improving attributes i.e. nutrient recycling, suppressing weeds, and controlling erosion on sloping land.
This technology has the advantage of enabling the farmer to continue cultivating the land while the tree/shrub species planted in intermittent rows help to maintain the quality of the soil. In contrast to Acacia cyanophylla and other experienced shrub species (e.g. Leucaena leucocephala, etc.), cactus is not a legume species. Therefore, one would suspect the benefit from using cactus in alley cropping systems. This investigation is to our knowledge the first, which is addressing the evaluation of spineless cactus-alley cropping system. Cactus may serve in this system as windbreak, resulting to improved grass/cereal yields. Wide alley may allow animals to graze biomass strata or cereal stubbles in summer time. In the latter case, cactus pads may be harvested shopped into small peaces and given directly to grazing animals as energy supplement of low quality stubbles.
If Cacti are well known such as the best plants for the reforestation of arid and semi-arid areas because of their resistance to scarce and erratic rainfall and high temperatures, alley-cropping systems in Tunisia are largely new phenomena. Properly managed, alley cropping can provide income at different time intervals for different markets in a sustainable, conservation orientated manner. Alley designs can also make better use of the space available between trees and add protection and diversity to agricultural fields.
This collaborative work was conducted in Central Tunisia with the support of ICARDA and where rainfall is around 300 mm/year. In this area, the spineless cactus in alley cropping could effectively substitute the traditional fallow cropping system. The objective of the study is to integrate socio-economic, technical and environmental indicators in assessing the impact of natural resources management research.
Impact of alley cropping on biomass production
Table 7 shows the first results of barley yields observed on a sample of 5 plots for each treatment: 1. Barley only; 2. Barley in alley cropping with cactus. All the other inputs held constant between the treatments in these comparisons. The estimations have been done in April 2004 with the grains at the milky stage. The total biomass yield increased from 4.24 T/ha to 6.648 T/ha, corresponding to an increase of 57 % due to an increase of 29 % of herbs (weeds + straw); but mainly to the dramatic increase of grain yield (171 %).
On the natural rangelands, the herbaceous biomass yield is estimated at 4.98 tons/ha, compared to less than 3.3 tons/ha without cactus. The maximum attains 7.6 tons/ha in the alley cropping systems.
This result is obviously due to the micro-environment created by alley cropping. Indeed, cactus plants play as “wind breaks” that reduce water loss and increase soil moisture, which increases barley grain and total biomass yield. Also, cactus plants play a role of trap to several “moving seeds” creating a kind of niche to the emergence of interesting pasture species. These effects, even experimentally accepted, need further investigation.
Cropping barley between lines of cactus does not have a detrimental effect, which can result from competition to available moisture and nutrients, of cactus total biomass (pads + fruits) yields. Indeed, fresh biomass yields of total cladodes (cumulative of 3 consecutive years) are estimated to 118 and 132 tons/ha, respectively for cactus without and with barley intercropping (Table ). Fruit production follows the same trend. Also, these particularly high yields are the result of two consecutive favorable years.
This result explains the high increase of above biomass with barley in alley cropping (7.11 Tons/ha), compared to the treatment cactus alone (1.87 Tons/ha) (Table 9). Moreover cactus constitutes an important role to increase the under ground biomass in the soil. This increase should activate the biological live and then the organic matter of the soil.
Impact on soil conservation
Planting cactus on marginal lands improves soil characteristics (Table 0). Monitoring organic matter, carbon, phosphorus and K contents of soil samples shows that planting cactus improves soil nutrients, especially for organic matter, carbon and P with relative increases of 350%, 450 % and 100 %, respectively. These increases follow more the same trend when compared to marginal land cropped to barley without fertilizers application. Cropping barley between cactus lines reduces the amount of nutrient and values recorded are very similar to those obtained with eroded rangeland cropped or not with barley. It looks like that the nutrients made available by cactus planting are used by barley crop, and may explain, in addition to “wind breaks” and “niche” effects, the significant increase in cereal yields.
Besides we observe two opposite effects of cactus with the technology: 1) soil enrichment in potassium and 2) soil exhaustion in calcareous. Cactus is known to be rich in calcium and quite poor in potassium. The increase of active calcareous with barley is explained by the low content of calcium in barley products, compared to cactus but also herbaceous species in the rangelands.
Conclusions
Cladodes can be an important fodder in the W ANA re¬gion, as clearly shown for sheep. Cladodes are not a bal¬anced feed, but are a good, inexpensive energy and water source. They are high in ash, Ca, soluble carbohydrates, and vitamin A, but low in crude protein, fiber, P, and Na; as cladodes age, they increase in dry matter and fiber but decrease in crude protein. As for other good forage crops, cladodes are highly digestible, with typical digestibilities of 60 ta 70% for organic matter, 40 to 70% for crude pro¬tein, and 40 to 50% for crude fiber. When the level of cladodes in the diet increases, the intake of fibrous feeds, the rumen protozoa, and the rumen ammonia concentra¬tion increase while water intake and rumen cellulolytic activiry decrease. Indeed, feeding cladodes can cause sheep essentially to stop drinking water. Cladodes are highly palatable-about 6 to 9 kg and 50 to 80 kg of dry weight can be consumed daily by sheep and cattle, respectively. Cladodes have a low gut fill value, because their intake does not reduce fibrous feed intake. The nutritive value of spiny and spineless cladodes are similar, and spines are readily removed. Cladodes should be supplemented with an appropriate and cost-effective nitrogen source (e.g., Atriplex spp.).
Recommendations are (1) avoid decreasing rumen cellulolytic activity by adding molasses, (2) limit the amount of grain in the diet for the same reason, (3) feed animals fibrous feeds (straw, hay) before cactus to minimize any laxative effect, and (4) use a special mineral supplement for adequate amounts of sulfur. In any case, the high moisture content of cladodes alleviates the problem of watering animals in dry regions.
Alley cropping technique is a promising technique, because beside the fact is well adopted by farmers, it increases biomass yield, improve soil quality, and improve farmers income.
Feeding livestock with cactus pads increases the level of C18:3 fatty acids, the so-called omega 3, in meat and probably will do so in milk and thus, contribute to have a better animal product, meeting the final aim of taking care of human health.

Introducción
El futuro de las regiones áridas y semiáridas depende del desarrollo de sistemas agronómicos sustentables y de la implementación de cultivos adecuados. Esos cultivos tienen que resistir exitosamente la falta de agua, las temperaturas altas y las deficiencias en fertilidad de los suelos. Los cactus pueden satisfacer esos requisitos y son cada vez más importantes para la susbsistencia y para actividades orientadas al mercado en las regiones áridas y semiáridas.
(Barbera, 1995). Esta contribución se concentra en el oeste de Asia y en la región norte de Afrecha (WANA), caracterizadas por inviernos con lluvias escasas y erráticas y por veranos cálidos y secos. También se caracterizan por una alta tasa de crecimiento poblacional, con áreas escasas de tierra cultivable, desiertos y por recursos limitados de agua para riego. (Nordblom
and Shomo 1995). La región WANA contiene la mayoría de las más de 1.5 millones de hectáreas utilizadas para el cultivo de Opuntia ficus indica en el mundo, para forraje y alimento del ganado.
Más del 50 % de las tierras áridas en la región de WANA ha perdido su vegetación desde la segunda guerra mundial, mientras que al mismo tiempo la población humana ha crecido al cuádruplo (Le Houérou, 1991). En este aspecto la población del ganado ovino ha crecido en un 75 % y las tasas del ganado han ido desde 1 oveja cada 4 hectáreas a 1 oveja por hectárea, entre 1950 y 1989. Efectivamente, la contribución de estas tierras a las necesidades anuales de ganado para
alimentación está en declive, yendo desde un 80 % en 1965 a menos de un 25 % para las necesidades del 2000. El exceso de pastoreo y el deterioro de las tierras han forzado a las costumbres de pastoreo a migrar con otros rumbos y al cambio de las costumbres alimenticias en algunos países, suplementando fuertemente la dieta de forraje con granos y otros alimentos concentrados ofrecidos
comercialmente. Una programación típica de alimentación en los sistemas agro pastorales de las regiones áridas y semiáridas del WANA incluye un suplemento de forraje con cactus desde mayo hasta septiembre.
La búsqueda de especies de plantas con propiedades de crecer y producir en regiones áridas ha sido una preocupación permanente en muchos de los países del WANA. Las características del cactus cumple con la mayoría de los requisitos de un cultivo para alimento del ganado resistente a las sequías, tal como se describe en De Kock (1980): (1) el cultivo no solo tiene que resistir largas sequías, sino también producir gran cantidad de alimento durante los períodos de lluvias
favorables para poder ser utilizados durante los períodos de sequía; (2) La cosecha debe tener alta capacidad de ser transportada, (3) la cosecha no debe tener un efecto adverso en la salud de los animales que la consumen; (4) el uso extensivo no debe tener un efecto adverso en las plantas, es decir, que las plantas deben tener una capacidad de recuperación alta; (5) el manejo y mantenimiento de los cultivos debe tener un buen rendimiento en cuanto a su costo y (6) el
cultivo debe tener una demanda baja en cuanto al suelo y otras necesidades climáticas.
Usando estos criterios, Opuntia ficus indica ha demostrado ser un cultivo importante de alimento para animales en Túnez, para el mantenimiento de ganado ovino.
Incremento del uso del cactus en las zonas áridas
El cactus crece en 'desiertos' y es resistente a las sequías. Efectivamente, ya que tiene un
mecanismo especializado de fotosíntesis, que conduce a una producción más eficiente de materia seca por unidad de agua consumida que la de los pastos o legumbres (Russell and Felker 1987; Nobel 1988, 1989; Chapter 4). El cactus produce forraje, fruta y otros productos útiles. También se usa para prevenir la degradación a largo plazo en regiones con entornos débiles. El cactus en general, y en particular la Opuntia spp. Fueron introducidos en las regiones WANA por los españoles moriscos en el siglo XVI (Le Houérou 1992). Sin embargo, solo hacia el fin del siglo XX
se establecieron los grandes cultivos. Estos introdujeron los bancos de forraje siempre verde para alimentar los animales durante el combate de las sequías y de la desertificación.
La Opuntia spp. usada para alimento de animales es abundante, barata y fácil de cultivar, gustosa, y capaz de resistir sequías prolongadas (Shoop et al. 1977). Estas características la constituyen como un suplemento importante de alimentación para el ganado, particularmente durante períodos de sequía y tiempos de baja disponibilidad de alimentos. Los cladodios conforman la mayoría de la biomasa de la Opuntia, y puede usarse como alimento fresco del ganado o almacenarse en silos para uso posterior (Castra et al. 1977). De cualquier manera, la idea de usar el cactus para alimento de ganado no es reciente y ya data del siglo XVIII (Griffith, 1905; Curtis, 1979; Le Houérou, 1979; Brutsh, 1984; Russell and Felker, 1987; Clovis de Andrade, 1990; Barbera et al., 1992; Flores Valdez and Aguirre Rivera, 1992).
Grandes áreas de cactus están disponibles a lo largo del año en Algeria, México y especialmente en Brasil y Túnez, y sirve como alimento para el ganado de emergencia en caso de sequías. En muchas regiones áridas (por ej.., Tunez, Mexico, South Texas, South Africa), los agricultores hacen uso extensivo del cactus como forraje de emergencia, cosechándolo en su forma agreste o en cultivos para prevenir las consecuencias desastrosas de las sequías severas y frecuentes (Le Houérou 1992). Desde el 1900, en África del norte, se han hecho plantaciones de arbustos (principalmente Acacia cyanophilla y Afriplex numularia o A. halimus) y cactus (principalmente Opuntia ficus indica var. inermis) para reducir la erosión de la lluvia y del viento y evitar la degradación del suelo. Cerca de 1 millón de hectáreas en Algeria, Marruecos, Libia y Túnez (Tabla 1). Estas plantaciones en regiones con precipitaciones pluviales bajas suministran alimento durante los frecuentes períodos de sequía. Gracias a su eficiencia alta en el uso del agua (Nobel 1988, 1989), la productividad del cactus sobre la tierra tiende a ser mas alta que la mayoría de
las especies de plantas en las regiones áridas y semiáridas. Por ejemplo, en Túnez, solo regadas por la lluvia y sin aplicación de fertilizantes el cactus sin espinas produce de 20 a 100 toneladas de cladodios en peso fresco por hectárea por año, con lluvias que van desde 150 a 400 mm por año.
Las tierras marginales representan a menudo ecosistemas frágiles. El arado de las tierras y la remoción indiscriminada de vegetación puede resultar en una degradacion en gran escala y en la destrucción de la capa superficial de vegetación. La escacez y también la desaparición de algunas especies de plantas indican la magnitud de las perdidas genéticas y edaficas (Le Houérou, 1991). Para revertir la tendencia a la desertificación y restaurar la capa de vegetación en estas areas, se necesitan programas integrados apropiados para el monitoreo de las tierras, el control del
ganado y la conservación de recursos naturales.
El cactus sin espinas (o. ficus-indica), resistente a la sequía y la erosión, está cultivándose ampliamente en Túnez y Algeria para aminorar y dirigir el movimiento de arena, para mejorar el restablecimiento de la capa de vegetación y para evitar la destrucción causada por el agua de las terrazas construidas para reducir el escurrimiento de las aguas. En las regiones del centro y sur
de Túnez, las plantaciones de cactus cumplen la funcion principal de conservar los recursos
naturales, así como también de suministrar gran cantidad de alimento para el ganado. El sistema fuerte de raíces del cactus ayuda a estabilizar las terrazas para el cultivo. Este sistema de raíces es ayudado por la recolección de agua en la base de las terrazas. Las raíces se extienden en la parte elevada de las terrazas y se internan profundamente en la tierra, asegurando la estabilidad de las terrazas. Como beneficio adicional, el corte y transporte de cladodios de estas plantaciones constituyen un recurso de alimento suficiente para los momentos de seca. Los cactus se usan también en combinación con barreras de cemento o frondas de palmeras para detener
la erosión y el movimiento de las arenas (Nefzaoui and Ben Salem, 2002).
El uso del cactus como alimento del ganado
Contenido de nutrientes
Los cladodios del cactus constituyen un modo desequilibrado de nutrientes, pero es un recurso de bajo costo para fuente de energía y de agua. Es escaso en proteínas crudas, fibra, fosforo y sodio (Nefzaoui and Ben Salem, 2002). Entonces, las dietas que contengan cactus deben equilibrarse para proveer esos nutrientes con suplementos adecuados. El contenido de agua en termino medio en relacion al peso fresco alcanz a porcentajes del 90 %. (Tabla 2). El contenido de cenizas es del 20% con respecto al peso seco. La proteína cruda está a menudo por debajo del 5%, pero puede llegar al 10% del peso seco (Tabal 2). El contenido de fibra es también relativamente bajo, cerca del 10 % del peso seco. El extracto libre de nitrógeno, que incluye azúcares monoméricas y poliméricas, está alrededor del 60% del peso seco. Los contenido de fosforo (0.3% del peso seco) y de sodio (0.01%) de los cladodios requiere complementos
alimenticios cuando se los usa para los animales. El contenido de cenizas de los cladodios es alto, principalmente por el alto contenido del calcio (Ca). Los cladodios tienen niveles altos de oxalatos (Ben Salem et al. 2002). Por ejemplo, la cantidad de oxalato es de unos 13% del peso seco y del 40% en su forma soluble (Este contnido alto de oxalatos puede explicar el efecto laxante de los cladodios en la alimentación de los
animales). Los oxalatos contienen principalmente Ca, poniendo este cation menos disponible para los animales. Sin embargo, el contenido de Ca de los cladodios es en general mas alto que lo que se pide para los animales. El exeso de Ca no es un problema en si, pero una racion con una
proporción desequilibrada Ca/P, igual a 35 en el caso de los cladodios, necesita ser compensada. De Koch y Aucamp (1970) informan sobre el mismo problema con O. ficus-indica y sugieren usar
bloques para lamer con P y Na. Estos bloques para lamer pueden hacerse con los ingredientes siguientes: sal, monosodium phosphate, melasas, dicalcium phosphate, y bonemeal. Según Shoop et al. (1977), los demás minerales de los cladodios (por ej., manganeso, cobre, zinc, magnesio y hierro) tienen concentraciones dentro del rango de lo aceptable en las dietas de los rumiantes. Una excepción es el contenido de sodio, que es relativamente bajo (0.02% for O. polyacantha).
La cantidad de fibra cruda (Tabla 3) es un indicador pobre de la calidad de la fibra en la
alimentación. Por ejemplo, las fibras de celulosa y lignina tienen baja digestibilidad. En cinco platy-opuntias (Opuntia engelmannii, O. filipendula, O. fragilis, O. polyacantha, and O.
versicolor), los porcentajes de celulosa son de 11 % del peso seco, de hemicelulosa el 18%, de lignina el 3.9% (Ben Thlija, 1987); en comparación, esos valores para la alfalfa son 22%, 15%, y 7.9% respectivamente.
Aunque el contenido de proteína de los cladodios es generalmente bajo (Tabla 3), hay una tendencia a incrementarse luego de una fertilización con nitrógeno. Por ejemplo, los
fertilizantes N y P pueden incrementar los contenidos de proteína cruda de los cladodios de la Opuntia de 4.5 a 10.5% del peso seco (Gonzalez, 1989). También, Gregory y Felker (1992) encontraron que algunos clones de Brasil tenían mas del 11% de proteína cruda. En regiones del WANA, grandes plantaciones de Opuntia se utilizan como producción de alimento para animales en areas secas donde la calidad del suelo, las lluvias y las finanzas atentan contra la aplicación de fertilizantes.
Por consiguiente, incrementando el contenido de nitrógeno de los cladodios por medio de la hibridización o de la selección es más promisorio. La deficiencia de las proteínas
también pueden ser compensadas con suplementos apropiados en la alimentación. Wehren (1976) demostró que la composición de aminoácidos de los cladodios de O. ficus-indica var. inermis es muy satisfactoria para los animales; las proteínas de tres cultivares contenían un promedio de 10.6 de acido aspártico, 13.0 de ácido glutámico, 4.3 de treonina, 4.3 de serina, 6.5% de proline, 4.8% de glycine, 7.8% de alanine, 0.8% de cystine, 7.0% de valine, 2.1% de methionine,
5.2% de isoleucine, 8.3% de leucine, 4.1% de tyrosine, 5.1% de phenylalanine, 5.9% de lysine, 2.3% de his¬tidine, and 5.5% de arginine.
La calidad nutritiva de los cladodios de la Opuntia depende del tipo de planta (especies y variedades), de la edad de los cladodios, de la estación del año, y delas condiciones agronómicas (como ser tipo de suelo, clima, y manejo del cultivo). En Túnez, el porcentaje de peso seco es mayor, y el contenido de proteína cruda es menor durante el verano; el contenido de cenizas tiende a ser mas alto en primevera y el contenido de fibra curda es mas alto en invierno (Ben Salem et al. 1996b). El porcentaje de peso seco se incrementa con la edad del cladodio. También, cuando el cladodio pasa de 1 a 5 años de edad, el contenido de proteína cruda de O. Ficus-indica var. Inermis decrece (de 5 a 3 % del peso seco), y la fibra cruda se incrementa (de 9 a 20%; A. Nefzaoui, observaciones no publicadas). Esta tendencia es similar a la de las demas fuentes de alimentación del ganado, donde los nutrientes disminuyen con la edad de la planta por causa del relativo incremento en el contenido de fibra (Nefzaoui and Ben Salem 1998).
Ingesta y digeribilidad
Los animales pueden consumir gran cantidad de cladodios. Por ejemplo, vacas en Jersey alimentadas de cladodios y suplemento de 1 kg dia-1 de un alimento concentrado consume 51 kg dia-1 de cladodios (Woodward et al., 1915). De una manera semejante Metral (1965) constató una ingesta voluntaria de 60 kg dia-1 cuando el alimento de las vacas consistía solamente en cladodios. Monjauze and Le Houérou (1965) observan para las ovejas una ingesta de 2.5 a 9 kg dia-1. Valdez y Flores (1967) advierten una ingesta mayor de O. Ficus indica (11 kg dia-1) que de O. robusta (6 kg dia-1). Las ingestas son mayores cuando el contenido de agua de los cladodios es elevado (A. Nefzaoui and H. Ben Salem, observaciones no publicadas). El consumo de cladodios puede tener un efecto laxante en las ovejas, permitiendo un paso mas rápido del alimento a traves del tracto digestivo del animal. Esto lleva a una digestión mas pobre, especialmente cuando los cladodios constituyen mas del 60 % de la ingesta de materia seca; suplementando con alimento fibroso (heno, etc ) se puede aliviar ese efecto laxante.
Las ovejas consumen hasta 600 g en peso seco de cladodios sin ningún problema digestivo (Cordier, 1947). Suplementando las fibras de baja calidad con melasas mejora el gusto al paladar (Preston and Leng 1987; Rangnekar 1988), y así los cladodios con su alto contenido de hidratos de carbono puede tener efectos similares a las melasas. El contenido energético de los cladodios es 3 500 a 4 000 kcal kg-1 en peso seco, y mas de la mitad de ello es digerible y proviene principalmente de los hidratos de carbono (De Kock 1983; Ben Thlija 1987). En las regiones áridas y semiáridas del norte de Africa, los residuos de las cosechas de cereales y las pasturas naturales no alcanzan a cumplir con las necesidades nutricionales de los rumiantes pequeños para producción de carne. Los
cladodios pueden suministrar un suplemento con mucho rinde para su costo, sea para criar ovejas o cabras. Por ejemplo, cuando las dietas de las ovejas en pastoreo se suplementan con tortas de cladodios, el engorde diario incrementa en un 5 por mil (hasta 145 g día-l; Tien et al. 1993); cuando se suministran cladodios a las cabras en pastoreo, con acceso a alfalfa, la producción de
leche se incrementa en un 45% (hasta 436 g día -l; Azocar et al. 1991). Cuando al cladodio se le asocia alimento rico en proteína, puede reemplazar a los granos de cebada (Ben Salem et al. 1998) o al maiz acopiado (Metral 1965) sin que se afecten los engordes diarios de ovejas o ganado. Por ejemplo, la producción de leche para los cabritos con aportes de 2.2 kg de alfalfa día-1 es de hecho apenas superior (1,080 g día-l) al suministro cuando 0.7 kg de cladodios reemplaza una masa
igual de alfalfa (Azocar et al. 1996).
Cuando a las ovejas se les ofrece cantidades en aumento de cladodios, su ingesta de heno también se incrementa (Tabla 3). La ingesta de heno en materia seca mas los cladodios se incrementan en forma estable cuando el suministro de cladodios aumenta. Los cladodios son altamente digeribles,
con propiedades semejantes a la materia orgánica, a la proteína cruda, a la fibra cruda, en rendimientos del 45 al 64 % (Tabla 3). La digeribilidad de los cladodios en las ovejas es similar a las cosechas comunes de forraje. La diferencia principal entre el cactus y los otros forrajeses el tiempo de degradabilidad de los nutrientes en el estomago del animal. Para otros cultivos forrajeros la máxima degradabilidad requiere unas 48 horas, mientras que los nutrientes en los cladodios se degradan muy rápidamente (entre 6 y 12 horas) y muy poca extracción de nutrientes
ocurre despues de 24 horas (Ben Thlija 1987). De manera semejante, 80% de la digestión total de singed Great Plains prickly pear (Opuntia polyacantha) en el ganado ocurre durante las primeras 16 horas (Shoop et al. 1977).La digestión rápida lleva a un pasaje acelerado del material por el tracto digestivo, conduciedo a un mayor volumen disponible para una ingesta posterior. Debido a la baja sensación de estomago lleno que produce la alimentación con cladodios, un aumento de cactus en la dieta no necesariamente reduce la ingesta de otros componentes de la ración (Tabla 3). Esto es de mucha importancia en las zonas áridas en las que el ganado se alimenta principalmente con heno o cereal, que son alimentos de baja calidad que tienen ingestas pobres, resultando en un lento engorde diario de los animales.
Consumo de cladodios y fermentación en el rumen de las ovejas
Ben Salem et al. (1996a) estudiaron el efecto de incrementar el nivel de cladodios sin espina en la fermentacion del rumen en la oveja, alimentada con heno a voluntad. El cactus mejora la fermentación en el rumen (Tabla 3), lo que tambien ocurre con las ovejas alimentadas con una dieta basada en Acacia cyanophylla suplementada con cladodios y úrea (Ben Salem 1998). En ambos casos el pH del fuído del rumen no se afecta con hasta 600 g de peso seco de cladodios por dia, el que permanece en 6.9. Los cladodios son ricos en carbohidratos de facil fermentacion y su
consumo probablemente mejora la salivación.
Comparada con una dieta libre de cactus, el alto suministro de cladodios duplica la concentración de amonia nitrogen en el rumen de las cabras alimentadas con dietas basadas en henos (Ben Salim et al. 1996a) o acacias (Ben Salem 1998). Esto lleva a consentraciones de amoniaco casi óptimas para el crecimiento de los microbios y la digestión de las fibras en el rumen (Satter and Slyter 1974; Ushida and Jouany 1985). Efectivamente, el conteo de protozoos por volumen se incrementa al cuádruplo cuando la ingesta de cladodios excede 300 g en peso seco por día (Tabla 3). Agregando cladodios a la dieta se incrementan los acidos grasos volátiles (como el acido propionico) hasta en un 30%, reflejando el incremento de la ingesta en hidratos de carbono solubles.
Ben Salem et al. (1996a) utilizaba una técnica in sacco (Urskov et al. 1980) para estudiar el
efecto del suministro de cladodios en la actividad celulosica en el rumen de la cabra con dieta basada en henos. La degradabilidad de la celulosa esta afectada adversamente por incrementos en las cantidades de cladodios en las dietas (Tabla 3), aunque el promedio de la degradabilidad no quede afectada. La disminución de la actividad celulosica en el rumen cuando la ingesta de cladodios aumenta puede deberse a que el incremento del protozoo ciliado tiene un efecto negativo
en el número de bacterias en el rumen, y de esa manera en la degradación de la celulosa. El alto nivel de minerales en los claddios puede tambien decrementar el crecimiento microbial en el rumen (Komisarczuk-Bony and Durand 1991). De todas maneras, una combinacion de O. ficus indica y cereal de heno es una solución nutricional satisfactoria para mantener a los pequeños rumiantes en las regiones áridas. Así pues, el suministro de cladodios puede mejorar el valor nutritivo y la ingesta de fibras de baja calidad.
Los cladodios como fuente de agua
La falta de agua puede deprimir la ingesta de alimentos, la digestion y consecuentemente afectar al engorde de las ovejas y cabras (Wilson, 1970; EI-Nouty et al., 1988; Silanikove, 1992). Entonces, el suministro de agua durante el verano y los períodos de sequia es crucial en las regiones de WANA y otras regiones áridas. Los animales consumen considerable energía para alcanzar las aguadas. Más aún, la degradacion de las tierras en las areas que rodean las aguadas
es un problema serio. Por lo que, el alto contenido de agua de los cladodios es beneficial en las areas secas. Los animales que reciben abundante ración de cladodios requieren poca (Cottier, 934) agua adicional, y a veces nada (Woodward et al., 1915). Las ovejas alimentadas durante largos períodos (400 a 500 dias) con gran cantidad de cladodios dejan de beber (Roussow, 1961;
Harvard-Duclos, 1969). Tambien la ingesta de agua en ovejas con dietas de heno y trigo se vuelve muy baja cuando la ingesta de cladodios es de 300 g en peso seco por dia o más, lo que resulta consistente con otros hallazgos (Terblanche et al. 1971). Similarmente, las ovejas con dieta basada en Acacia cyanophilla requieren 1.2 litros de agua diarios si se le suplementa con granos, pero sólo 0.6 litros diarios si se le suplementa con cladodios cladodes (Ben Salem et al., 2002).
La alimentación con cladodios de cactus puede mejorar la calidad de los productos animales.
Una investigación reciente conducida conjuntamente por el INRA en Túnez y por la Universidad de Catania (Italia) demuestra que el consumo de los cladodios de cactus incrementa la cantidad de omega 3 en la carne de corderos y cabritos (Ben Salem et al., 2005, no publicado). Este resultado alentador (figura 1) es de gran importancia y consigue el propósito final, o sea el cuidado de la salud humana. Ciertamente, se ha establecido ahora que "CLA es el único acido graso demostrado
inequivocamente que inhibe la carcinogénesis en los animales experimentales". Otros efectos
positivos del CLA son la reduccion del riesgo de cáncer, la reduccion de la diabetes y la
reduccion de la arterosclerosis.
Algunas consideraciones prácticas
El método que usa los cladodios para el ganado diferirá de acuerdo a las circunstancis, como trabajo disponible, infraestructura, y cantidad de cactus disponible. Aunque el metodo mas simple es la alimentación del animal in situ, no es éste el mas eficiente y debe tomarse precaución para que los animales no arruinen las plantas. La cosecha de cladodios puede cortarse en pedazos
pequeños o en tiras, y repartirse en un área confinada para limitar el desperdicio. Los cladodios pueden tambien cortarse en pedazos mas pequeños y mezclarse con heno o alfalfas de baja calidad para almacenar en silos (si no se incluyen las frutas, pueden agregarse melazas), lo que se mantiene anaerobicamente. El alimento de cladodios pueden mantener a los animales con vida por
largos períodos. Para suplementar la alimentacion con cladodios tomados a voluntad, las alfalfas o el heno pueden suministrar las proteínas y barras para lamer con partes iguales en peso de alimento de huesos, sal y cal para alimento, lo que puede suministrar fosfatos y sodio (De Koch, 1983).
Es mas barato mantener los cladodios como partes de plantas en lugar de despues de cosecharlos. Una vez cosechados los cladodios pueden secarse y triturarse, por ej usando una masa de molienda con un cedazo con poros de 6 mm de diámetro. Los cladodios en esta forma de comida no solo se digieren con mayor facilidad sino que también se almacenan mas facilmente, para su uso en tiempo de sequía. Un almacenamiento de buena calidad puede obtenerse trozando las paletas y mezclandolas
con salvado de avena, heno lucerna de bajo grado, u otras fibras usando 84 partes en peso de cladodios y 16 de fibras con la adición de un 2 % de melasas.
La manera mas facil y barata del uso del cactus es el pastoreo libre. Sin embargo debe protegerse la plantacion para no ser destruída. Las plantas jóvenes son las más susceptibles y las ovejas pueden liquidarlas. Tembien las plantas viejas pueden ser dañadas severamente, de tal manera que la siguiente produccion sea considerablemente mas baja. El mejor método es dividir la plantacion en parcelas pequeñas y alimentar los animales con ells intensivamente durante unos pocos meses, cada tres años, ms o menos. La alimentación directa necesita un control estricto, de otra manera los desperdicios pueden llegar a un 50% de la producción (en forma de cladodios comidos parcialmente y abandonados) y la plantacion puede destruirse (Monjauze and Le Houérou 1965; De Kock, 1980). Este tipo de manejo tiene un costo bajo y el pasto que pueda haber entre las plantas
esta disponible tambien. Las plantas en parcelas pueden servir hasta un cladodio mas alto que en la plantación original buscando que las plantas se recuperen bien, que el material usado sea de buena calidad y que las plantas se conserven en un tamaño razonable. Las tecnicas de corte y acarreo tienen las consecuencias opuestas. Las perdidas de alimento se reducen a cero y el riesgo
de destrucción de las plantas es pequeño, salvo que la cosecha se realice en plantas todavía muy jovenes. Aún cuando este método lleva un trabajo intensivo, en muchos casos de Africa del norte es el método recomendado por la falta de hábitos de pastoreo.
Integración de cactus con otros recursos alimentarios en la región de WANA
Las condiciones climáticas de la region de WANA conducen a tener dos faltantes en cada año: (1) en invierno (de 2-4 meses) y (2) en verano, mas largo, sumandole el otoño (de 5-6 meses). Estos intervalos requieren grandes cantidades de alimentos complementarios. Las estrategis nacionales intentan incrementar la productividad de las tierras y se concentran en especies de alta produccion, tales como la Acacia cyanophylla, Atriplex nummularia (o A. halimus), y el cactus sin espinas. Se usan varias técnicas de plantacion para arbustos y cactus.
1. en tierras comunales, donde las especies introducidas se pantan en hileras sin remover
las hierbas naturales o las especies naturales con troncos.
2. en tierras privadas se prefieren técnicas de cosechado, donde los agricultores pueden
cultivar las areas entre hileras cuando las condiciones de lluvia son favorables.
3. cuando la conservación del suelo es crucial, las plantaciones se hacen para ambos tipos bordeando las lineas de contorno
4. el tipo antiguo ("bosquet") implica una plantación densa de cactus rodeando la casa, para fruta y alimento de animales. Netamente, la integración de cactus con otros recursos en el sistema de alimentación es beneficioso.
Las fibras de baja calidad pueden suplementarse con cladodios de Opuntia ficus-indica var. inermis. Ciertamente, la ingesta de heno se aumenta significativamente con el incremento de las cantidades de cladodios en la dieta (Nefzaoui et al. 1993; Ben Salem et al. 1996). Los cladodios
son también un buen complemento para henos tratados con amoniaco o urea, porque suministran los hidratos de carbono solubles necesarios para el uso eficiente de nitrógeno no proteína en el rumen (Nefzaoui et al. 1993). Para la oveja Barbina, la ingesta voluntaria de cladodios aparece alta (presentada a voluntad) cuando se ingieren 250 a 480 g por dia de henos sin tratamiento con úrea o amoniaco (Nefzaoui et al. 1993). Las dietas que contengan un 64% de cladodios y henos no causan disturbios digestivos. El mantenimiento de las necesidades energéticas de ovejas se alcanzan con un bajo nivel de ingesta de henos, y para altos niveles de ingesta energética se requiere un 80% por encima del nivel de mantenimiento. Los henos tratados con urea o amoniaco son necesarios para reducir el déficit de nitrógeno. Cuando una dieta de heno no tratado y cladodios se complementa con Atriplex nummularia (300 g en peso seco dia-1) como fuente de nitrógeno, se consigue aún más retención de nitrogeno en la oveja y la digestibilidad de la materia organica y proteína cruda excede el 70% (Nefzaoui y Ben Salem 1996). Para corderos de cuatro meses, al reemplazar el grano salvado que es mas costoso con cladodios, se retiene un 10 al 15% más de materia orgánica y se da un porcentaje de mayor engorde diario del 15 % (Tabla). Opuntias como por ejemplo la O. ficus-indica puede también ser importante para cabras criadas en condiciones adversas.
Complementando con cladodios a las cabras Alpine x en tierras nativas y con A nummularia (100 g en peso seco por dia) se aumenta substancialmente el engorde de esos animales
(en 25-60 g por dia; Ben Salim et al. 2000), de manera que la O. ficus-indica y otros alimentos
locales pueden tener ventajas económicas en la alimentación del ganado.
Cactus en plantaciones por hileras: una tecnología promisoria
Se trata de una práctica agroforestal, en la que plantaciones peremnes se cultivan
simultaneamente con plantacions arables. Esta práctica se realiza de tal manera que los árboles crecen en hileras amplias con sembradios en los inter-espacios. Plantaciones en hileras es una forma de inter-plantaciones. Las leguminosas y las especies de árboles/arbustos de crecimiento rápido son los preferidos para esta práctica. Estas especies se identifican para este uso debido a sus atributos de mejorar el suelo, a saber, reciclando nutrientes, suprimiendo los yuyos y
controlando la erosion en terrenos inclinados.
Esta tecnología tiene la ventaja de permitir al
agricultor que continúe cultivando la tierra mientras que las especies de árboles/arbustos
plantadas en hileras intermitentes ayudan a mantener la calidad del suelo. En contraste con la Acacia Cyanophylla y otras especies de arbustos en el experimento species (e.g. Leucaena leucocephala, etc.), el cactus no es una especie de legumbre. Por lo que uno podría dudar del beneficio de usar el cactus en estos sistemas de plantacion en hileras. Esta investigación es, según nuestro conocimiento, la primera que evalúa este sistema con cactus. El cactus en este sistema puede servir como cortina para el viento, con resultados que mejoran la producción de pasturas y cereales. Las hileras distanciadas ampliamente permete que los animales se alimenten directamente con las camas de biomasa y con cereales en el verano. En este último caso, las paletas del cactus pueden cosecharse y triturarse en pedazos pequeños para complementar la
alimentacion de los animales en pastoreo cuando éste ofrece baja calidad.
Si los Cacti son reconocidos como la mejor plantación para reforestación en regiones áridas y semiáridas por su resistencia a las lluvias escasas y erráticas y a las temperaturas altas, los sistemas de plantas en hileras en Túnez son definitivamente un fenómeno nuevo. Con un manejo adecuado, las plantaciones en hileras pueden suministrar un aporte en diferentes intervalos de tiempo para diversos mercados, de una forma sostenible y orientada a la conservación del medio.
Los diseños en hileras también pueden hacer mejor uso del espacio disponible entre plantas y agregar protección y diversidad a los campos cultivados.
Este trabajo en colaboración fue llevado a cabo en Túnez central con el apoyo de ICARDIA, en un lugar donde las lluvias alcanzan alrededor de 300 mm/año. En esta región el cactus sin espina
plantado en hileras puede reemplazar efectivamente el sistema tradicional de cultivos. El objetivo de este estudio es integrar indicadores económicos, tecnicos y ambientales para constatar el impacto de las investigaciones sobre el manejo de los recursos naturales.
Impacto de plantaciones en hileras en la producción de biomasa
La tabla 7 muestra el primer resultado de cosechas de cebada observado en una muestra de 5 ensayos por cada tratamiento: (1) Solamente cebada; (2) cebada en una plantación en hileras de cactus. Todos los demas aportes fueron mantenidos constante entre tratamientos en estas comparaciones. Las estimaciones se hicieron en abril de 2004 con granos en estado lechoso (milky). El total de biomasa creció de 4.24 Tn/ha a 6.648 T/ha, correspondiendo a un incremento del 57% atribuible al incremento del 29 % de hierbas (yuyos y heno); pero principalmente debido
al asombroso incremento en la produccion de granos (171%).
En terrenos naturales, la producción de biomasa herbacea se estima de 4.98 Tn/ha, comparada con algo menos que 3.3 Tn/ha sin el cactus. El máximo alcanza a 7.6 Tn/ha en sistemas de plantación en hileras.
Este resultado ciertamente se debe al micro-ambiente creado por la plantación en hileras. Realmente, las plantas de cactus sirven como barreras al viento que reducen la pérdida de agua y aumentan la humectación del suelo, lo que incrementa la produccion de granos y del total de biomasa. Además, las plantas de cactus ejercen un papel de trampa para las variadas 'semillas movedizas' creando una especie de nicho para que surjan interesantes especies de pasturas. Estos efectos, si bien fueron controlados experimentalmente, requieren de una investigacion mas profunda.
El sembrado de cebada entre las hileras de cactus no tiene un efecto negativo, que podría
resultar de la disputa de la humedad y los nutrientes disponibles para la producción del total de la biomasa del cactus (paletas + frutas). Efectivamente, la producción de biomasa fresca del total de los cladodios (acumulando 3 años consecutivos) se estima en 118 y 132 Tn/ha, respectivamente para el cactus sin y con interplantacion de cebada. La producción de fruta sigue la misma tendencia. Ademas, estas producciones particularmente altas son el resultado de dos años consecutivos favorables.
Este resultado explica en gran incremento de la biomasa con cebada en plantaciones en hilera (7.11 Tn/ha), comparado con el tratamiento de cactus solo (1.87 Tn/ha) (Tabla 9) Más aún, el cactus cumple un importante rol para aumentar la biomasa bajo tierra en el suelo. El incremento podría activar la vida biológica y entonces la materia orgánica del suelo.
Impacto en la conservación del suelo
La plantación de cactus en tierras marginales mejora las características del suelo (Tabla 1). El monitoreo de contenido de materia orgánica, carbon, fosforo y K en muestras de suelo demuestra que la plantación de cactu mejora los nutrientes del suelo, especialmente en materia orgánica, carbón y P con incrementos relativos de 350%, 450% y 100%, respectivamente. Estos incrementos siguen la misma tendencia cuando se comparan con plantaciones en tierras marginales con cebada
sin aplicación de fertilizantes. El sembrado de la cebada entre hileras de cactus reduce la
cantidad de nutrientes y los valores registrados son muy similares a los que se obtuvieron con plantaciones en tierras erosionadas o sin cebada. Parece que los nutrientes que resultan disponibles en la plantación de cactus son usados por la cebada y puede explicar, además de producir el efecto de 'cortinas de viento' y de 'nicho', el incremento significativo en la producción de cereal.
Además se observan dos efectos opuestos del cactus con la tecnología: (1) enriquecimiento en potasio del suelo y (2) agotamiento de calcareos en el suelo. El cactus es remarcable por ser rico en calcio y pobre en potasio. El incremento con la cebada del calcario activo se explica por el bajo contenido de calcio en los productos de la cebada, comparados con el cactus pero tambien con las especies herbáceas del terreno.
Conclusiones
Los cladodios pueden ser una importante alimentación para los animales en la región del WANA, como se demuestra para las ovejas. Los cladodios no son un alimento balanceado, pero son una fuente buena y barata de energía y de agua. Tienen altas cantidades de ceniza, hidratos de carbono solubles, y vitamina A, pero bajos en proteína, fibra, P y Na; al envejecer aumenta su materia seca y su fibra, pero decrecen las proteínas crudas. En comparación a otros buenos cultivos de forraje los cladodios son altamente digestivos, con digestibilidades típicas de 60 a 70% de materia orgánica, 40 a 70% de proteína cruda, y 40 a 50% de fibra cruda. Cuando se aumenta el nivel de cladodios en la dieta, aumentan la ingesta de alimentos con fibra, los protozoos del rumen y la concentración de amoníaco en el rumen; mientras que disminuyen la ingesta de agua y la actividad celulósica del rumen. En efecto, la alimentación de ovejas con cladodios pueden detener esencialmente la bebida de agua. Los cladodios son gustosos al paladar; ovejas y ganado pueden consumir diariamente 6 a 9 kg y 50 a 80 kg de materia seca, respectivamente. Los cladodios tienen una valor bajo de la sensación de llenado, porque su ingesta no reduce la ingesta de alimento con fibra. El valor nutritivo de los cladodios con o sin espinas es similar, y las espinas pueden
quitarse facilmente. Los cladodios deben complementarse con alguna fuente apropiada de nitrogeno, que sea de buen rinde al costo. (e.g., Atriplex spp).
Las recomendaciones del caso son: (1) evitar la disminución de la actividad celulósica agregando melasas, (2) limitar las cantidades de grano en la dieta por las mismas razones, (3) alimentar los animales con alimentos fibrosos (e.g. heno) antes del cactus para minimizar el efecto laxante, y (4) usar un complemento mineral con cantidades adecuadas de sulfuros. En todos los casos, el contenido elevado de agua de los cladodios ayuda al problema de la bebida de agua de los animales en las regiones secas.
La técnica de plantación en hileras es promisoria, porque además de tener buena aceptación en los agricultores, incrementa la producción de biomasa, mejora la calidad del suelo y aumenta el ingreso de los agricultores.
La alimentación de los animales con las paletas del cactus incrementa en la carne en nivel de
los acidos grasos C18:3, comunmente llamados omega 3, y probablemente lo haga tambien en la leche, contribuyendo a tener mejores productos animales, que satsifagan la necesidad final de cuidar la salud humana.

Candida Protocol
It is important to get the best latch possible when you have sore nipples. Even if the cause of sore nipples is Candida, improving the latch can decrease the pain. Note that with the “ideal” latch, the baby covers more of the areola (brown or darker part of the breast) with his lower lip than the upper lip. Note also that the baby's nose does not usually touch the breast (except when the mother's breasts are very large, and even then, most babies well latched on will not have their noses touching the breast). It is not always easy, though, to change the latch of the older baby.

Start with local treatment (applied on the nipple) with:
1. Gentian violet (look under that title at the website below or see handout: #6 Using Gentian Violet). Use once a day for four to seven days. If pain is gone after four days, stop gentian violet. If better, but not gone after four days, continue for seven days. Stop after 7 days no matter what. If not better at all at four days, stop the gentian violet, continue with the ointment as below and call or email.
Gentian violet comes as a 1% solution in water. It also usually dissolved in 10% alcohol, as gentian violet is not soluble in pure water. This amount of alcohol is negligible, as the baby will only get a drop of gentian violet. Apparently some pharmacists will dissolve it in glycerine instead of alcohol, if you wish. 2% gentian violet should not be used.
Plus:
2. APNO (All Purpose Nipple Ointment) as below:
• Mupirocin 2% ointment (15 grams)
• Betamethasone 0.1% ointment (15 grams)
• To which is added miconazole powder so that the final concentration is 2% miconazole. This combination gives a total volume of just more than 30 grams. Clotrimazole powder to a final concentration of 2% may be substituted if miconazole powder is unavailable, but both exist (the pharmacist may have to order it in, but compounding pharmacies almost always have it on hand). I believe clotrimazole is not as good as miconazole. Using powder gives a better concentration of antifungal agent (miconazole or clotrimazole) and the concentrations of the mupirocin and betamethasone remain higher. Sometimes we will add ibuprofen powder to a final concentration of 2%.
The combination is applied sparingly after each feeding (except the feeding when the mother uses gentian violet). “Sparingly” means that the nipple and areola will shine but you won’t be able to see the ointment. Do not wash or wipe it off, even if the pharmacist asks you to. I used to use nystatin ointment or miconazole cream (15 grams) as part of the mixture, and these work well enough, but I believe the use of powdered miconazole (or even clotrimazole powder) gives better results. These ointments can be used for any cause of nipple soreness ("all purpose nipple ointments"), not just for Candida (yeast). Use the ointment until you are pain free and then decrease frequency over a week or two until stopped. (See Handout #3b Treatments for Sore Nipples and Sore Breasts under “all purpose nipple ointment”). If you are not having less pain after 3 or 4 days of use, or if you need to be using it for longer than two or three weeks to keep pain free, get help or advice.
3. Grapefruit seed extract (not grape seed extract, ACTIVE INGREDIENT MUST BE “CITRICIDAL”), 250 mg (usually 2 tablets) three or four times a day orally (taken by the mother), seems to work well in many cases. If preferred the liquid extract can be taken orally, 5 drops in water three times per day (though this is not as effective). Oral GSE can be used before trying fluconazole, instead of fluconazole or in addition to fluconazole in resistant cases. See below for information on grapefruit seed extract used directly on the nipples.
4. If pain continues and it is sure the problem is Candida, or at least reasonably sure, add fluconazole 400 mg loading, then 100 mg twice daily for at least two weeks, until the mother is pain free for a week. The nipple ointment should be continued and the gentian violet can be repeated. If fluconazole is too expensive, ketoconazole 400 mg loading, then 200 mg twice daily for same period of time (or grapefruit seed) can be used instead. If Candida is resistant, itraconazole, same dose and time period as fluconazole, can be used and has worked, though Candida actually is less sensitive to itraconazole, generally, than it is to fluconazole. (See handout #20, Fluconazole). Fluconazole is apparently now available as a generic product (therefore less expensive). Fluconazole should not be used as a first line treatment or if nystatin alone does not work (which it usually doesn’t). Before using fluconazole, nipple pain should be treated aggressively with good latch, gentian violet, all purpose nipple ointment and grapefruit seed extract. If used, fluconazole should be added to treatment of the nipples, not used alone. Fluconazole takes three or four days to start working, though occasionally, in some situations, it has taken 10 days to even start working. If you have had no relief at all with 10 days of fluconazole, it is very unlikely it will work, and you should stop taking it.
5. For deep breast pain, ibuprofen 400 mg every four hours may be used until definitive treatment is working (maximum daily dose is 2400 mg/day).
Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE)
Grapefruit seed extract (ACTIVE INGREDIENT MUST BE “CITRICIDAL”) should be used in conjunction with the APNO (All Purpose Nipple Ointment). Apply the diluted liquid grapefruit seed extract on the nipples, and then follow with the ointment (always after the feeding).
Apply solution directly on the nipples. It does not need to be refrigerated. It may be covered and used until solution is finished.
• Mix very well five to 10 drops in 30 ml (1 ounce) of water (preferably, but not necessarily, distilled).
• Use cotton swab or Q-tip to apply on both nipples and areolas after the feeding.
• Let dry a few seconds, then apply “all purpose nipple ointment”.
• If using Gentian Violet, do not use GSE on that particular feed but use after all other feeds.
• Should be used in conjunction with oral GSE, either tablets, capsules, or liquid extract (see above)
• Use until pain is gone and then wean down slowly over the period of at least a week.
• If pain is not significantly improving after two to three days, increase the dose by 5 drops per 30 ml (ounce) of water. Can continue increasing until 25 drops per 30 ml of water.
• If flaking, drying, or whiteness appears on the skin, substitute vitamin E oil or pure olive oil for APNO 1-3x/day.
• Laundry can be treated as well: add 15-20 drops in the rinse cycle of all wash loads
If not using Gentian Violet, it may be helpful to treat baby with acidophilus by rolling a wet finger in acidophilus powder (break open a capsule), and let baby suck on the finger right before a feeding. Use 2x first day, 2x second day only. Mother may want to ingest Acidophilus as well, 3x/day for 1-2 weeks.

Cuando a la madre le duelen los pezones es importante colocar al bebé en el pecho en la mejor postura posible. Aún si la causa de dolor en los pezones es la presencia de Candida , mejorando la postura del bebé puede disminuir el malestar. Fíjese que en la posición "ideal" el bebé cubre la aureola (parte marrón o más oscura del pecho) más con el labio inferior que con el superior. Fíjese también que normalmente la nariz del bebé no toca el pecho (salvo cuando el pecho de la madre es muy grande, y aún en ese caso, la mayoría de los bebés que toman una buena posición al mamar no tocarán el pecho con su nariz). Sin embargo no siempre es fácil cambiar la posición de los bebés ya crecidos.

Comenzar con un tratamiento local (aplicado en los pezones) con:
1. Gentian violet (ver ese título en la página web, más abajo, o ver el folleto: #6 El uso de Gentian Violet). Usarlo una vez por día durante cuatro a siete días. Si después de cuatro días el dolor se ha ido, dejar de usar el gentian violet. Si se encuentra mejor, pero el dolor no se ha ido después de cuatro días, continúe por siete días. En cualquier caso al séptimo día suspender el tratamiento. Si no hay mejoría a los cuatro días, suspender el gentian violet, y continuar con el ungüento como se explica más abajo, llamar o enviar un email.
Gentian violet viene en una solución en agua al 1%. Generalmente disuelto en 10% de alcohol, ya que gentian violet no es soluble en agua pura. Esa cantidad de alcohol no tiene importancia, porque el bebé recibirá solamente una gota de gentian violet. Puede ser que algunos farmacéuticos lo disuelvan en glicerina en vez de alcohol, si así se desea. Una solución al 2% de gentian violet no debería usarse.
Además:
2. APNO, Ungüento universal para pezones, (APNO es la sigla del nombre en inglés, All Purpose Nipple Ointment) según se explica más abajo:
• Ungüento de Mupirocina al 2% (15 gramos)
• Ungüento de Betametason al 0.1% (15 gramos)
• A lo que se agrega polvo de miconazol de tal manera que la concentración final sea 2% de miconazol. Esta combinación da un volumen total de algo más que 30 gramos. Puede sustituirse con polvo de clotrimazol en una concentración final del 2% si no se consigue el polvo de miconazol, pero ambos existen (el farmacéutico tendrá que pedirlo, pero las farmacias integradas casi siempre lo tienen a mano). Yo creo que el clotrimazol no es tan bueno como el miconazol. El uso de polvo produce una mejor concentración del agente antimicótico (miconazol o clotrimazol) y mayores concentraciones de mupirocina y betametasona . A veces nosotros agregamos polvo ibuprofeno en una concentración final del 2%.
La combinación se aplica con mesura después de cada vez que la madre da de mamar (menos la vez cuando la madre usa gentian violet). "Con mesura" significa que los pezones y aureolas quedarán brillantes pero no se puede ver el ungüento. No se lave ni pase un paño en la zona, por más que el farmacéutico le diga que lo haga. Yo solía usar ungüento de nistatina o crema de miconazol (15 gramos) como parte de la mezcla, y esto daba buenos resultados, pero creo que el uso de miconazol en polvo (o también el polvo de clotrimazol) produce mejor efecto. Estos ungüentos pueden usarse para cualquier causa del dolor de pezones ("ungüento universal para los pezones), y no sólo para Cándida (levaduras). Use el ungüento hasta que no tenga más dolor y entonces disminuya la frecuencia durante una semana o dos, hasta terminar. (Ver folleto #3b Tratamientos para el Dolor de Pezones y de Pechos en la sección de "ungüento universal para los pezones"). Si el dolor no disminuye después del tercero o cuarto día de uso, o si UD necesita seguir usándolo por más de dos o tres semanas para no tener dolor, busque ayuda o consejo.
3. Extracto de semilla de pomelo (no es extracto de semilla de uva, EL INGREDIENTE ACTIVO DEBE SER "CITRICIDAL") 250 mg (generalmente 2 tabletas) tres o cuatro veces por día vía oral (para que lo tome la madre), lo que en muchos casos anda bien. Si se prefiere el líquido extraído puede tomarse vía oral, 5 gotas en agua tres veces por día (aunque esta forma no es tan efectiva). El Extracto de Semilla de Pomelo vía oral puede usarse antes de probar el fluconazol, en lugar del fluconazol o además del fluconazol en casos muy resistentes. Ver la información más abajo sobre el extracto de semilla de pomelo usado directamente en los pezones.
4. Si el dolor continua y UD. está seguro que el problema es Candidiasis, o por lo menos razonablemente seguro, agregue una aplicación de 400 mg de fluconazol, luego 100 mg dos veces al día durante por lo menos dos semanas, hasta que la madre quede sin dolor por una semana. El ungüento para pezones debe continuar y gentian violet puede repetirse. Si fluconazol es muy caro, puede usarse entonces ketoconazol 400 mg, luego 200 mg dos veces al día durante el mismo período de tiempo (o semilla de pomelo). Si la Cándidiasis es muy rebelde, puede usarse itraconazol en igual dosis y durante el mismo período que fluconazol, y ha dado resultado, aunque la Cándida es en general menos sensible al itraconazol que al fluconazol. (Ver el folleto #20, Fluconazol). Aparentemente el Fluconazol se consigue como genérico (y por tanto no tan caro). No debe usarse el Fluconazol como tratamiento de primera línea o cuando la nistatina sola no hace efecto (lo que suele suceder). Antes de usar fluconazol, el dolor de pezones debe tratarse agresivamente con una buena posición del bebé al mamar, con gentian violet, con el ungüento universal para pezones y con el extracto de semilla de pomelo. En caso de ser usado, el fluconazol debe agregarse al tratamiento de los pezones, no usarse sólo. Lleva unos tres o cuatro días para que el fluconazol comience a hacer efecto, aunque a veces, en algunas situaciones, ha tardado hasta 10 días. Si con 10 días de fluconazol no ha sentido ninguna mejoría, es muy probable que no le surta efecto, y debe dejar de usarlo.
5. Para dolores de pecho intensos, se puede usar ibuprofeno 400 mg cada cuatro horas hasta que el tratamiento definitivo tenga efecto (la dosis máxima es 2400 mg/día).
Extracto de Semilla de Pomelo (GSE, por su sigla en inglés)
Extracto de semilla de pomelo (EL INGREDIENTE ACTIVO DEBE SER "CITRICIDAL") debe usarse juntamente con el ungüento universal para pezones. Aplicar en los pezones el extracto de semilla de pomelo líquido diluido y luego continuar con el ungüento (siempre después de amamantar).
Aplique la solución directamente en los pezones. No necesita ser refrigerado. Se lo puede tapar y usar hasta que la solución se acabe.
• Mezclar muy bien cinco a diez gotas en 30 ml (1 onza) de agua (preferentemente, pero no necesariamente, destilada).
• Use hisopos de algodón o Q-tip para aplicar en ambos pezones y aureolas después de amamantar.
• Deje secar unos pocos segundos, y aplique "el ungüento universal para pezones".
• Si se usa Gentian Violet después de dar de mamar, no use el extracto de semilla de pomelo en esa vez que da de mamar, pero úselo en todas las otras veces.
• Debe ser usada juntamente con el extracto de semilla de pomelo para vía oral, ya sea en tabletas, cápsulas o extracto líquido (ver mas arriba).
• Úselo hasta que el dolor pase y entonces lentamente disminuya las veces que amamanta al bebé por lo menos durante una semana.
• Si el dolor no disminuye significativamente después de dos o tres días, aumente la dosis en 5 gotas por 30 ml (1 onza) de agua. Puede seguir aumentando hasta las 25 gotas por 30 ml de agua.
• Si se escama, se seca o aparecen zonas blancas en la piel, sustituya el aceite con vitamina E o el aceite puro de oliva por el ungüento universal para pezones 1-3 veces/día.
• La ropa también puede ser tratada: agregar unas 15-20 gotas en el ciclo de enjuague de todas las cargas de ropa.
Si no se usa Gentian Violet, puede dar resultado si se trata al bebé con acidofilus, pasando un dedo mojado por el polvo acidofilus (abrir una cápsula), y dejar que el bebé chupe el dedo inmediatamente después de ser amamantado. Use solamente dos veces el primer día, 2 veces el segundo día. La madre también puede ingerir acidófilus, 3 veces al día durante 1-2 semanas.
