Corale 2: Dalla Pasqua all'Avvento
Fregi a filigrana in alcune carte.
| Translation - English Antiphonaries
These pages contain a selection of miniatures taken from the Antiphonaries (circa 1480) by Cristoforo de’ Predis and his school. De’ Predis was one of the greatest miniaturists of this period. The corali are preserved at the Franciscan Library and are briefly described here.
Antiphonary 1: Psalter and Vesperal
Bound in leather with boards embossed with decorations in brass and with probable eighteenth-century fastenings, the leather is tooled with the Bernardine trigraph and sun. Well preserved (640x450 mm).
Unnumbered pages (I+160+I) of 625x440 mm. In many places the fifteenth-century script has been scraped off and replaced with a probable eighteenth-century script, which has damaged the parchment. The last two pages are written in a later hand. In many pages there are patches and crude coverings, especially in the lower margins of the page.
There are 75 large filigreed initial letters in ink of varying colours, in the characteristic Lombardy style of the late fifteenth century (compare with the antiphonary of St. Ambrogio); initial letters in red and blue ink.
Miniatures by Cristoforo de' Predis and his workshop: large initial letters in gold and other colours, with stylised leaf, flower and fruit details. The decorative motifs are taken from the repertoire of Cristoforo and are sometimes traced from patterns of the school, which were also used by the miniaturists of Cardinal Arcimboldi (compare with the antiphonary of St. Ambrogio and the Missal of the Capitular Library of Milan).
It is likely that the decoration of this manuscript was begun towards the end of the period when Cristoforo de’ Predis was active, around 1480, and continued after his death by his flourishing school.
Antiphonary 2: From Easter to Advent
Bound in leather with boards embossed with decorations in metal, reinforcing boards on the front panel, well preserved (575x415 mm). Pages: 1+169 (antique numbering) of 555x390 mm.
There are 331 filigreed initial letters in ink of varying colours, including the musical keys in black, in the characteristic Lombardy style of the late fifteenth century, and many initial letters in red and blue ink and marginal rubrics of the text. Filigreed friezes on some pages. Presence of glosses or annotations of a liturgical nature on folios 50v and 51r. Miniatures from the Lombardy school of the last quarter of the fifteenth century, derived from the style of Cristoforo de’ Predis: initial letters in gold and other colours, with leaf and flower motifs.

I'm a former software engineer with over ten years' experience of working with leading telecommunications and networking companies, in Ireland and in France.
My services:
IT>EN translation: Technical texts, e.g. telecoms/IT, electrical, oil & gas; general texts, e.g. journalism, travel, press releases and "marketese".
FR>EN translation: telecoms/IT texts only.
EN revision: revision and proofing of original EN texts. I specialise in academic/scientific articles and theses in a wide range of subjects.
Correction of flawed translations from Italian/French into English: Note that I charge quite highly for this service, because it is very slow work - I check every single word, and hence I often charge the same rate as my translation rate. I will not do a "quick and cheap" revision of a translation. A client who comes to me has often already discovered that this is a false economy.
I don't do medical, business/financial or legal.
I have a particular interest in translating mediaeval poetry, specifically old Italian and old French poetry in the epic style. Currently I'm translating Dante's Commedia into English. If you're interested, I can send you the first three cantos by email on request.
