Ultrafiltration
2. PRESSURE
Ultrafiltration also uses a membrane as a separation barrier but in this case it is a porous membrane that separates a solution into its constituents based on molecular shape and size. The size of the pores determines its separation properties.
Operating pressures of only 1 to 10 bar are required to obtain acceptable flows of liquid through the open structure of these membranes.
Nanofiltration
The distinction between reverse osmosis and Ultrafiltration is not clear-cut. Indeed it is possible to make a range of membranes with properties that vary from the tightest Reverse Osmosis membrane, to the most open Ultrafiltration membrane. The point of change from one process to the other is not distinct.
A Nanofiltration membrane is such a membrane (with separation characteristics falling between RO and UF) allowing the passage of small molecules such as salt. A typical application is the desalting aqueous solutions of higher molecular weight substances. These membranes are used at pressures typically between 10 and 40 bar (150 to 600 psi).
Diafiltration
In the case of Ultrafiltration and Nanofiltration the amount of small molecular weight material or mineral salts removed respectively can be enhanced by adding water to the feed. This added water then washes these components out of the concentrate as permeate thereby reducing their level in the concentrate. This technique is referred to as Diafiltration

1.1.3 Diafiltración
En caso de Ultra Filtración y Nano Filtración el total de Material de poco peso molecular o sales minerales respectivamente eliminados, pueden ser aumentados por medio de agregar agua a la alimentación. Esta agua agregado luego limpia el concentrado de estos componentes como filtrado y así reduce su nivel en el concentrado. Esta técnica es llamada Diafiltración.
