The United States subsidiary decided voluntarily to clear millions of bottles from supermarket shelves. The company in France put this down to American wimpishness rather than a real health scare.
To some extent the difference in outlook by the two countries was reflected by their marketing techniques. In the United States Perrier advertisements proclaimed ‘Perrier is Perfect' while in France advertisements claimed 'Perrier C'est Fou', i.e. it is crazy, bubbly and enlivens the spirit.
