Equity markets rose in the second quarter of 2005, although returns in US dollar terms were less pronounced. Of the major equity markets, the best performer was South East Asia. The equity market that performed least well was Japan.
Investors began the period concerned by the possibility of a slowing global economy. As the quarter progressed, sentiment improved as company profits exceeded expectations in most major markets. Nevertheless, new highs in the price of oil led to occasional lulls in the equity market, with the exception of the energy sector. Oil rose above US$61 a barrel before subsiding. The recovery of the US dollar was a boost for non-US investors. Unemployment continued to fall in the US, from 5.2% in April to 5.0% in June, while it rose in Germany and France.

Patients were randomized within 3 to 14 days to receive treatment with XXX tablets 25 mg/day plus standard therapies or placebo plus standard therapies for 4 weeks (the dosage of XXX was increased to a maximum of 50 mg/day after 1 month).
