Source text - Spanish CAJAMARCA Gloria e infamia de Pizarro Claude Demarigny Partitura para teatro que consta de cuatro partes tituladas respectivamente Así pasó la historia Sonata para Atahualpa El sueño de Filipillo Por un millón veintiséis mil quinientos pesos de oro Personajes: puede haber cuatro personajes o cuatro actores que se identifiquen por momento con el Padre Valverde – el Inca Atahualpa – el conquistador Pizarro - el intérprete Filipillo (Filipillo para los indios y Felipillo para los españoles). En los momentos en que no se identifican con su personaje, los actores pasan a ser el CORO que va comentando los acontecimientos, o su mismo personaje tal como aparece en el sueño del otro. Es que la obra consta de tres sueños o mejor dicho tres pesadillas: - - la de Atahualpa que trata de entender lo que le ha pasado, por qué está vencido, quién es esa gente extraña, qué puede intentar todavía, etc… - - -la de Filipillo que sueña con mejorar su estado social con los españoles y descubre la perversidad de la Historia - - y la de Pizarro que descubre el regicidio y culturicidio que llevan su nombre y sueña demasiado tarde con rehacer la historia, de allí la idea del suplicio de Pizarro, condenado a matar eternamente los gallinazos que procuran comer el cuerpo de Atahualpa, es decir el mismo Tahuantinsuyo, el Imperio de los Incas, esta misma América que no se cansa de intentar reencontrarse… Claro que el autor tiene su idea sobre la puesta en escena y la escenografía. Pero no la impone a nadie. El espectáculo está en lo que sugiere el texto a quien lo lee. ASI PASO LA HISTORIA Cuando Atahualpa, rodeado de miles de indios, vio que ningún español salía a recibirle, Dijo: ".……..." Lo que, según los cronistas, quería decir: - ¿Qué es destos de las barbas? o - ¿Dónde están estos cristianos que no parecen? o- ¿Dónde están estos? (O sea que tuvo que volver para coger la cruz que se había olvidado en la primera versión)... Lo que sigue es de gran importancia. Son las palabras definitivas que cruzaron Valverde y Atahualpa. PRIMERA VERSION VALVERDE: El gobernador te está esperando para cenar y te ruega que vayas, porque no cenará sin ti. ATAHUALPA: Habéisme robado la tierra por donde habéis venido y ahora éstame esperando para cenar. No he de pasar de aquí si no me traéis todo el oro y plata y esclavos y ropa que me traéis y no lo trayendo téngoos de matar a todos". 0 - Yo no pasaré de aquí hasta que déis todo lo que habéis tomado en mi tierra, que yo bien sé quien sois vosotros y en qué andais. VALVERDE: Mira, Atabalica, que no manda Dios eso, sino que nos amemos a nosotros. ATAHUALPA: ¿Quién ese Dios? VALVERDE: El que te hizo a ti y a nosotros. Y esto que te digo lo dijo aquí escrito en este libro. - Le pidió Atabalica el libro y el fraile se lo dio. Y como Atabalica vio el libro, se admiró más de la escritura que de lo escrito, ARROJOLO por ahí BURLANDO DEL FRAILE". SEGUNDA VERSION VALVERDE: ...Yo soy sacerdote de Dios y enseño a los cristianos las cosas de Dios y asimismo vengo a enseñar a vosotros. Lo que yo enseño es lo que Dios nos habló que está en este libro: y por lo tanto, de parte de Dios, te ruego que seas su amigo porque así lo quiere Dios y venirte ha bien dello y ve a hablar con el Gobernador que te está esperando. - Atahualpa pide a Valverde que le dé el libro. - Valverde se lo da cerrado. - Atahualpa no consigue abrirlo. - Valverde extiende el brazo para ayudarle. - Atahualpa con gran desdén le dio un golpe en el brazo, no queriendo que lo abriese, "no se maravilla de las letras ni del papel". - Lo arroja a cinco o seis pasos de sí, "con mucha ira y el rostro encarnizado". -y dice: ATAHUALPA: Decid a esos que vengan acá, que no pasaré de aquí hasta que me den cuenta y satisfagan y paguen lo que han hecho en la tierra... Bien sé lo que habéis hecho por ese camino, como habéis tratado a mis caciques y tomado la ropa de los bohíos. VALVERDE: Los cristianos no han hecho esto; que unos Indios trajeron la ropa no lo sabiendo el Gobernador y él la mandó volver. ATAHUALPA: Decid a esos que vengan acá, que no pasaré de aquí hasta que me den cuenta y satisfagan y paguen lo que han hecho en la tierra... ECO: No partiré de aquí hasta que todo me la traigan... TERCERA VERSION (Según Montaigne) VALVERDE: Somos gente apacible que llega de lejanos viajes, enviada por el rey de Castilla, el mayor príncipe de la tierra habitable, a quien el Papa, representante de Dios en la tierra, ha hecho príncipe de todas las tierras. Si queréis pagarle tributo, os ha de venir bien de ello. ATAHUALPA: En cuanto a apacibles, si lo sois no se os ve. En cuanto a vuestro rey, si pide, es que está en la escasez y necesidad y el que le ha hecho semejante reparto, debe ser hombre dado a la discordia para dar a terceros cosas que no son suyas. Así que daos prisa en salir de estas tierras... sino haremos con vosotros lo que hemos hecho con aquellos otros cuyas cabezas estáis viendo. FINAL ATAHUALPA: Decid a éstos que vengan acá. No pasaré de aquí hasta que me den cuenta y satisfagan y paguen lo que han hecho en la tierra... -No partiré de aquí hasta que me traigan toda la ropa... Los he de matar a todos. . . Cuando, desesperado, se echó en tierra tapándose los oídos y apretándose los ojos, una fuerza vibrante como oro fundido, ardiente y estremecido, lo sacudió y le hizo grabar desmayado las leyes del pueblo: NO MATARAS NO ADULTERARÁS NO ROBARAS NO ATESTIGUARÁS CONTRA TU PRÓJIMO FALSO TESTIMONIO NO DESEARÁS LA CASA DE TU PRÓJIMO NI LA MUJER DE TU PRÓJIMO NI SU SIERVO, NI SU SIERVA NI SU BUEY NI SU ASNO NI NADA DE CUANTO LE PERTENECE No fue ensueño, no fue imaginación. Despertándose el patriarca, vio escrita en la piedra la ley de Dios. La vio y supo leerla: No matarás, no adulterarás, no robarás. Gritó de contento. Pero nadie le contestó. Gritó otra vez: ¡Vengan! ¡Acudan todos! Pero nadie le contestó. Fue corriendo por la tierra inundada tropezando con Ios cuerpos. Duró dias y noches sin perder el camino. Por fin se vió con unos hombres, moradores de aquellas sierras. Lloró de contento y quiso abrazarles. Pero no se dejaron, antes se asustaron. Leyó en sus ojos el miedo que Ies infundia. Su rostro echaba rayos. Entonces besó la tierra y el pedregal se cubrió de pasto. Se quedó postrado y miles de Ilamas poblaron Ios prados y miles de hombres se jutaron en oración. Se levantó el patriarca y, sin decir palabra, se puso en marcha hacia de donde venía. Todos le siguieron callados durante noches y dias, por cumbres y despeñaderos. Casi todos llegaron sin padecer hambre ni cansancio a la piedra en que estaba grabada la Iey. El patriarca la leyó: NO MATARAS. NO ADULTERARAS. NO ROBARAS. Todos besaron Ia tierra. Brillaba el sol sobre la Iaguna. Los nevados se reflejaban en Ias aguas. Ni una pizca de viento inclinaba las totoras. Un pueblo postrado en el hielo de las alturas rendía al sol su homenaje. EI patriarca habló por vez primera: 'Soy el hijo del sol, lo que está escrito en esta piedra, lo grabó él con mi mano para que lo sepa Ieer. No quiso que haya testigos y por eso partió con su rayo a todos mis compañeros. Pero yo les guiaré por el camino de la verdad. Sucedió hace siglos cerca del Iago Titicaca. ¡Ojalá hubiera pasado! ¡Ojalá tuviéramos escrita la palabra de Dios en Ia piedra! ¡Ojalá la leyéranlos todos en un libro como aquél que arrojé con tanto desprecio! ¡Ojalá volviera yo a reinar sobre un pueblo que conozca el libro de la verdad! Lindo Iibro que no encierra ningun error porque lo escribió el mismo Dios. Porque todo lo que se le agrega es conocido de todos. Es escrito en el momento como el nombre de los Incas y de quiénes son hijos y cuáles fueron sus hazañas, sus victorias y su mansedumbre con Ios vencidos aconsejándoseles renunciar a Ios sacrificios humanos, sus justas venganzas en los vencidos arrogantes, como los cañaris, el exterininio de los rebeldes, la repoblación de las provincias con otra gente mejor. En todo esto no cabría duda. Los dichosos niños de mis reinos leerán las hazañas de sus reyes que han conquistado el Tahuaritisuyo para que reine la paz y 1a justicia. Sabrán de cómo mi padre dividió el imperio entre mi hermano y yo para no ofender a los pueblos del norte, recién conquistados, dándoles por soberano un rey nacido entre ellos, y de cómo le hice guerra justísima a mi hermano porque desamparaba el Cuzco. Deleitándose en placeres cuando el enemigo común asediaba nuestras playas. Tanto así que, si no fuera por él, los cristianos no me tendrían en cautiverio. ¿Qué dirán los libros? No puede haber un solo libro. Mi hermano encontrará quien lo defienda, que hará otro libro opuesto al mío, de manera que cada caso requiera dos libros para ser expuestos y otro tercero para fallar imparcialmente: tres opiniones para cada caso me parece lo justo. Y de Pizarro, ¿quién escribirá el libro? ¿Quién contará su inaudita hazaña? ¿Quién dirá su audacia, su valor y su desprecio a la muerte? ¿Qué dirá de mí? ¿Qué dirá de mi hermano, el que escriba la epopeya de Pizarro? PIZARRO: No tengas por afrenta haber sido preso y desbaratado porque los cristianos que yo traigo, aunque son pocos en número, con ellos he sujetado más tierra que la tuya y desbaratado otros mayores señores que tú, poniéndolos debajo del señorío del Emperador, cuyo vasallo soy. FELIPILLO: Dice que ha vencido a otros señores más fuertes que Vuestra Señoría porque los cristianos aunque pocos son más valientes que los Indios y superiores. ATAHUALPA: Ya lo creo. PIZARRO: Dios permite que para que salgais de la bestialidad y vida diabólica que vivís que tan poco como somos sujetamos tanta multitud den gente. FILIPILLO: Dice que su Dios les dará siempre la victoria aunque fuesen numerosos los enemigos. ATAHUALPA: Así parece. PIZARRO: ¿Y porqué no me traduces a mí? FILIPILLO: Dice "veremos". PIZARRO: ¡Mejor para él que no quiera enojarme!.. Dile esto: No hacemos guerra sino a los que nos la hacen y pudiéndoles destruir, no lo hacemos, antes los perdonamos. FILIPILLO: Dice que son buenos los cristianos porque perdonan cuando pudieran matar. ATAHUALPA: Yo también he visto la bondad y ánimo de los españoles. FILIPILLO: Dice... PIZARRO: Cállate que no me importa lo que contesta... yo soy el que habla. Si tú fuiste preso y tu gente desbaratada fue porque venías con tan gran ejército contra nosotros, enviándote a rogar que vinieses de paz. FILIPILLO: ...que fue preso y vencido porque en vez de venir de paz como se lo pidió, Vuestra Señoría vino con todo el ejército en armas. ATAHUALPA: Yo de paz quería venir pero los míos no me dejaron y todos que me aconsejaron han muerto. PIZARRO: ¿Qué contestó? FILIPILLO: Que vino en pie de guerra porque los españoles le habían robado ropa y matados gente y que ustedes no son sino unos ladrones, asesinos y embusteros. PIZARRO: Pues respóndele a ese perro que echó en tierra el libro donde estaban las palabras de Dios y por esto permitió Nuestro Señor que fuese abajada su soberbia y que ningún Indio pudiese ofender a ningún cristiano. FILIPILLO: Que ningún Indio ha peleado con ningún cristiano porque su Dios protegía a los cristianos haciéndoles invencibles y esto porque Vuestra Señoría había arrojado el libro santo y es un soberbio, arrogante e ignorante. ATAHUALPA: Dile que yo, bien sé que el que habla en mi ídolo no es Dios verdadero pues tan poco me ayudó... tan poco me ayudó... tan poco me ayudó... Diciendo esto Atahualpa agarró a Filipillo y lo echó. Cerró la puerta y se acercó a Pizarro enseñándole la uña en que estaba escrito Dios. Pizarro, el analfabeto, se quedó mudo. Pizarro se quedó mudo ante el nombre de Dios. Viendo esto, Atahualpa atónito, le dio la espalda hasta que saliera. Cuando Pizarro iba saliendo Atahualpa le gritó “Dios”. CORO: ¿Qué habrá pensado Atahualapa? ¡Qué vergüenza! Pizarro no sabe leer. ¡Qué vergüenza para el Inca vencido! ¡Ojalá le hubiera vencido Huascar, su hermano! Que su hermano, como él, sabía de su origen divino y de sus antepasados, mejor que los amautas, y más sabía cuanto tiene que saber el que tiene que reinar. ¡Qué vergüenza! Pizarro no sabe leer, o sea que sabe menos que sus capitanes y ni siquiera sabe lo que le hace más fuerte. Y con todo le venció al Inca con el atropello de los caballos y el estrépito de los cañones- Pura algazara, puro alboroto. Nada más. Brutalidad, bestialidad. ¡Qué vergüenza! ¡qué vergüenza! Le venció un aventurero cualquiera, audaz por condenado, pero un aventurero que ni representa lo que haría justa su victoria. Y se hunde de golpe un imperio en el mar del olvido, cortado su porvenir de árbol desconocido, de jaguar de pelo negro. Un imperio se hundió por la audacia de un analfabeto. ¡Qué vergüenza! Y el Inca está preso. A merced del aventurado y afortunado y afamado analfabeto... ¡Qué vergüenza! ¡Qué vergüenza! PIZARRO: El mundo es de los ignorantes. Dios es uno y trino, dice el padre Valverde. Uno y tres son cuatro, traduce Filipillo. El misterio de la Trinidad, en boca de un malvado, ¿cómo quieren que entienda? - Triunfa Pizarro que no sabe leer, triunfa Filipillo que profana la estirpe real, se marcha a España Hemán Pizarro, el que me tenía afecto y respeto; triunfarán el tuerto y el gordo, Almagro y Riquelme, y triunfará el padre Valverde quien, en nombre de Dios, hasta las piedras mandaría al infierno. Estoy rodeado de enemigos, listos a acusarme de todo, hasta de juntar ejércitos, cuando me tienen cautivo. ¿Por qué lo haría pudiendo hacer que no vuele ni cante una ave en mi imperio si no lo quiero? ¿Se burla de mí Pizarro? Cruzó el cielo un cometa verdinegro parecido al que rayó la noche poco tiempo antes de la muerte de mí señor, Huaina Capac. Cruzó el cielo el cometa que anuncia las grandes calamidades, la destrucción de los imperios, la muerte de los reyes. Lo he visto, poco menos grueso que el cuerpo de un hombre, más largo que una pica. Mi muerte se aproxima. No me entristece perder la vida. Me entristece no volver a reinar como quería hacerlo. No se escribirá la historia del Tahuantinsuyo. No se escribirán las leyes de este pueblo para que las aprendan los niños. No se les enseñará ninguna otra verdad tampoco. No la creerán. Siempre les faltará algo: el libro que no habré escrito. Seguirán pensando que hay otra verdad que se les esconde pero que habla en la sangre, en las costumbres, y andarán por siglos guardando mi luto, guardando el luto de algo cada vez más desconocido. No habrá sino un gran luto que nadie entenderá pero todos sentirán. No olerán las flores, no cantarán las aves, no sonarán los ríos. Se olvidará el canto sinfónico del río. Y volverán a matar a Atahualpa por oro, oro negro, por siglos y más siglos. ¡Mátenme! No importa por qué. ¡Mátenme! Que ya estoy listo. El halcón se ha volado de tu escudo, Atahualpa, más veloz que el cometa, cruza la noche estrellada, aletea por los círculos del arco iris, halcón rojo, anaranjado, amarillo, lleva a Viracocha la noticia de tu muerte próxima. Viracocha, no sueltes la llama blanca que cada noche baja del cielo a beber las aguas del mar que sobran. Deja que se aneguen las tierras. No sueltes la llama blanca que brilla en la noche estrellada. O más bien, sacrifícala en los altares del cielo. ¡Corra su sangre por el polvo de las galaxias! y no la de tu hijo predilecto. ¡Tira con tu honda a los nevados la sangre de la llama blanca que no, la de tu hijo! Viracocha, ¿me oyes? ¿Cuándo sacrificarán los dioses? Llegó la hora de tu justicia. Detén la llama constelada. Viracocha, ¿me oyes? Oh, hacedor, que estás en los fines del mundo sin igual, que diste ser y valor a los hombres... A estos que hiciste, guárdalos que vivan sanos y salvos, sin peligro, que vivan en paz. ¿Dónde estás? ¿En lo alto del cielo o abajo? ¿En los truenos en los nublados de las tempestades? Oyeme, respóndeme.... ¿o quieres que lo estrangulen los cristianos y lo sepulten para que los indios, cerrada la noche, lo desentierren y 1o lleven sobre dos palos atado, por montes y despeñaderos, hasta el Cuzco, hasta el ombligo de tu mundo, y lo depositen ante los cuerpos momificados de sus antepasados exhibidos en la plaza para rendirte homenaje en el mes de los difuntos? ¿Esto quieres? Homenaje tras homenaje.... Respóndeme, tú que te escondes en las nubes de las tempestades... ¡Respóndeme! Pues éste será tu último homenaje. Por última vez verás a los Incas momificados exhibidos en el Cuzco y el cuerpo de Atahualpa, su cuerpo pálido y verdinegro, tendido en la plaza ante tu pueblo desconcertado. Más veloz que el cometa, el halcón verde, el halcón azul, violeta, añil, ha cruzado el espacio en busca de una respuesta. EL SUEÑO DE FILIPILLO Cogí ya la manta con que hoy se cubrió Atahualpa y la manchó y la desechó... Eres más fina que la seda, más blanda que lana de vicuña y más caliente. ¿Hombres de mi tierra te han tejido día y noche con alas de murciélagos! ¿Para qué? Sólo para que este lnca impío, usurpador y soberbio se cubra contigo un solo día y luego te deseche y te mande a quemar para que nadie más te toque o te profane. Ahora, yo me abrigo contigo, manta calientica, manta riquísima de mucha labor de todas las gentes de Túmbez a Puerto Viejo. No me visto de lnca ni de orejón, contigo me hago murciélago, para entrar en el aposento del lnca y, mientras las hermosas princesas le tienen los manjares en la mano, servidos en vajilla de oro, yo me los llevo volando, me los llevo robando, me los llevo riendo a carcajadas y asustándolos a todos. Se vengó el murciélago. Se vengó el murciélago aciago. El sol se ennegreció y abandonó a su hijo a los maleficios de la noche. ¡Ay qué bueno es presentir tu caída, Inca fracasado! Si hubieras visto, como yo, las torres de Sevilla, los jardines de Granada, y la Santa imagen de la Virgen vestida terciopelo, guarnecida de perlas y oro y tan purísima en su semblante doloroso hubieras visto Atahualpa, lo poco que somos nosotros y ¡cuán equivocados! .. ¿Para que tratas de asustarme? No me impongas silencio. Detente, que no me impresionas. No te servirán tus amenazas. Tus días están contados. Filipillo se salvará. ¿Sabes? Me dieron el agua bendita y con esto, no puedes nada contra mí, como no pudiste contra Pizarro. He llorado, Atahualpa, he llorado y todavía lloro cuando por primera vez pude arrodillarme ante el Cristo, siendo cristiano. Pero no puedes entender. ¿Quieres que te diga otras cosas que puedas entender? Los cristianos tienen centenares de cañones como los que sonaron en Cajalnarca y desbandaron tus ejércitos; tienen decenas de carabelas que cruzan el mar grande y duran meses para cruzarlo sin nunca hundirse y es maravilla ver el orden de los ejércitos armados de arcabuces. No te digo nada de sus mujeres ni de las casas floridas con balcones, patios y zaguanes, ni de tantas otras cosas que, aún pensándolas mucho, no alcanzarías a representarte. Pero un cosa te digo: los cristianos tienen unos carruajes... no sé cómo explicarte, verás... a los caballos que conoces les atan dos grandes palos y entre éstos ponen una caja en la que uno puede sentarse y ésta en un eje y dos ruedas que son como dos aros que giran y se mueven con el andar de los caballos. Algunas son muy bien labradas y en ellas se pasean las señoras para hacerse visitas. Otras son más toscas. Las usan para transportar sus frutos de los campos a la ciudad. Muy superiores son los cristianos, Atahualpa, y aunque quieras, no los vencerás. Siempre te mandarán gente y más gente y te aplastarán. ¿Quién puede entender esto? Únicamente aquél que lo ha visto con los propios ojos. Los españoles y yo. Si Atahualpa me escuchara, no me creería. Me acusaría de engañarle. ¡Allá tú con tu soberbia! Se acabó la comedia, conmigo serás cristiana, conmigo te bajarás de tu altanero orgullo para besar la tierra bendita de Dios y comer el pan de todos y amar a los hombres como yo. Yo te llevaré en las blancas carabelas que crujen con los vientos y te enseñaré las maravillas de las tierras lejanas. Quiero que por primera vez en estos tiempos, se case la hija de un señor con un hijo de nadie. Abrígate en mi manta sacrílega. Únete a mí en la cubierta de la carabela. Ni conoces las estrellas que nos miran, que por aquí son diferentes. ¿Qué te importa? Estas no conocen al Sol y no le dirán nada de tu fuga. Nos lIevamos a España la manta sagrada del Inca que nos esconde de las estrellas desconocidas como cualquier poncho rústico. Maravilla de princesa liberada, falta poco para que seas mía, para que te maravilles tanto con lo que te enseñaré, que pronto habrás olvidado este mundo caduco. El padre Valverde nos unirá. Es un amigo de verdad. Con él he arriesgado la vida. El mismo me ha bautizado y me ha enseñado mucho. Yo creo que es un hombre santo y no por eso menos valiente. De tal manera que si no nos ayudaba Dios, que El sólo sabe a quien quiere dar la victoria, ni tú ni yo estaríamos conversando ahora, ni mucho menos Almagro vendría a pedir su parte. - Sí, Padre. - Pues bien. No vale más aquel respeto a los amautas, a los orejones, y recibir vejámenes, "este puente para los señores" y "este otro para los mortales" y "esta dama no es para ti" y "trabaja para los señores que el Inca lo proveerá todo". Muy bien para los del Cuzco, pero nosotros, los de la costa, conquistados, hechos para servir, o si no, nos mandan a los mitimaes para poblar nuestras tierras, y nos llevan a nosotros a morirnos de frío en la Puna... Ya no sé... ... Mande, Padre. - ¿Qué opinas, Felipillo? - Lo mismo que su merced, Padre... - Ya veo que me entiendes. Para que reine la paz en estas tierras milagrosamente conquistadas por un puñado de valientes hace falta que digas que oíste que se reúnen ejércitos para liberar al Inca, con lo cual tanto Almagro como Pizarro verán que se les cierra el paso y que lo único es acabar con Atahualpa de manera que dicha reunión pierda todo objeto. - Me parece claro. - Te corresponde decirlo. - No sé nada de esto. - Téntelo por dicho. - Es mentira. VALVERDE: Yo te absuelvo... Y no te ofendas que por el bien de la cristiandad lo hago. ¿No me pediste la bendición? Arrodíllate... En nombre del Padre... etc. … Tú no sabes lo que es interpretar la voluntad del Cielo. Es ahondar lo más oscuro de los laberintos humanos para, dentro de lo más oscuro, sacar la flor y limpiarla y volverla a exhibir a la luz del día. Yo u otro, para que poco a poco renazca y florezca. Yo del estiércol hediondo he sacado una azucena negruzca y la voy limpiando en el agua de estas sierras que corre pura de los nevados para sacarla al sol, algún día. Yo u otro. ¿Quién soy yo? Algún día florecerá... Te confieso Felipillo, francamente, no se sí valía la pena que llegáramos hasta acá. Todo estaba bien y no necesitaban de nosotros. Algún día habíamos de encontrarnos. Tal vez más tarde, siendo vosotros más fuertes y nosotros menos codiciosos. Pero uno sabe navegar y piensa que la tierra puede ser redonda y cree llegar al Asia y se topa con un mundo nuevo que ignoraba. Así van las cosas. A lo hecho, pecho. Miente Felipillo que yo te absuelvo. Nos sumiremos juntos en el cataclismo del siglo. FILIPILLO: ¿Por qué? ¿Por qué dudan los cristianos? No lo entiendo. Dios les dio la victoria. Maten no más. ¿Acaso no son victoriosos? ¿Qué les importa Atahualpa? El impío, el soberbio, el usurpador, el polígamo, el fraticida... ¿No me cubro yo con su manta profanada?... ¿Y quien soy yo? Un Indio de la costa capturado, bautizado, hispanizado... Pero si los cristianos dudan, ¿quién soy yo? Un vendido, un traidor, el primero de los traidores del Tahuantinsuyo... Manta sagrada, díme, ¿cómo te sientes sobre mis hombros? ¿Te sientes diferente que sobre los hombros del Inca? ¿Qué has sentido cuando las manos de una sirvienta te dejaron caer sobre los hombros del Hijo del Sol? ¿Te pusiste a relucir? ¿A qué oliste de repente? ¿Perdiste tu peso?¿Dejaste de ser pelo? ¿Te volviste rayos de sol materializados? ¿Y por qué te siento yo como eres, ala de murciélago? Yo he visto los huesos y las mazorcas de maíz que el Inca ha tocado y que se botan en unas petacas para quemarlas al año. Son como los de uno cualquiera y los perros los quieren acabar de roer. ¡Basta de cuentos! Y el Padre Valverde dice que Dios quiere la paz. Y ¿por qué no la tiene si la quiere? Dice que para probar a los mortales. En esto tiene razón. Al que no se prueba, se le va la mano. Los cristianos nunca se equivocan. Si algo está bien, estaba previsto. Si está mal, es para ponerlo a uno a prueba. Los designios de la Providencia se desconocen. Con este otro cuento, el cristianismo durará mil años. Nunca se le podrá tomar en falso. The Governor did not agree, saying: PIZARRO: Addawallop’s power is sufficiently immense that to gather a great number of people, though the power of the Lord our God is much greater in comparison, for through His infinite goodness, He helps His own. Understand that He who has freed us from past danger will free us from this day forward. For the Christians have good intentions in luring those barbaric infidels to the service of God and to the knowledge of the holy Catholic faith. Let us give thanks to God. At that moment the captain who had razed Atahualpa’s fields and tents, and brought back “men, women, sheep, gold, silver and clothing,” approached Pizarro. The horses carried in eighty thousand gold coins, seven thousand silver pieces, and fourteen emeralds. The gold and silver came in enormous pieces, as well as in large and small plates, jugs and pots, stoking rods, goblets, and other objects. ATAHUALPA: These are my personal treasures and the Indians who have fled took with them even larger quantities. PIZARRO: And what would you be willing to give for your ransom? ATAHUALPA: If you promise to free me and to restore me to the throne, I will give you as many gold and silver handmade objects as are needed to cover the entire floor of the cell in which I am now imprisoned. CHORUS: Some twisted up their faces in disbelief to hear that he could produce such a treasure. The Inca noticed this and said: ATAHUALPA: I can not only give you that, but as much as is needed to fill this room with gold and silver to the height of my arm. CHORUS: There they painted a white line. PIZARRO: If you do as you say, not only will we let you live, we will also let you return to your homeland in peace. ATAHUALPA: Well, if you’ll do as you say, I will add a bit more than what I have promised. CHORUS: The house was approximately twenty feet long and fifteen feet wide. ATAHUALPA, to Felipillo: Tell these Christians that if they do not kill me, I will give them this house filled with gold… this entire house filled with gold. PIZARRO: How soon will this be done? None of this is a mystery, As you’ve well understood. But the book… That cursed, blessed book…? What do all those signs mean? This you have not understood. Search, ask, question, Atahualpa. Atahualpa once innocently asked Hernán Pizarro, who was the legitimate Pizarro, the oldest and learned one, or maybe it was some other captain: “Are Christians born knowing how to read and write?” Confused, Hernán Pizarro or some other CAPTAIN answered him: “Are your Indians born knowing how to play the panpipes?” Atahualpa smiled and the captain continued: CAPTAIN: Many different sounds come out of the panpipes or flutes your Indians play to entertain you, but did you realize that there are only a few tubes that play all the notes? Well, depending on its size, each tube embodies a distinct sound so that the sound is written in the size of the tube. We do the same in writing down the sounds that come out of our mouths so that we can say the names of all things, only that instead of drawing them as little bars of different heights, we make little pictures or letters everyone can recognize. We read the names of things just as melodies are played. ATAHUALPA: Can you write “Atahualpa”? CAPTAIN: Yes, even though the word isn’t part of our language, we can sound it out and write down the appropriate letters. ATAHUALPA: Write it down… A-ta-uall-pa…Ataualpa…Ataua-lpa… You’re writing my name. You’re the first person to write down an Inca’s name. No other Inca’s name has ever been written. Will you write them all down? Promise me you’ll write them down so that they will not disappear from the memory of my condemned people. CAPTAIN: I promise you. ATAHUALPA: The names of my ancestors will not be forgotten! Their rough sounds will still be heard in the memory of other names once my people have died and their language has disappeared. The art of reading our history told in knotted fabric, quipus, will be forgotten but the names of my race will live on. Oh, heavenly instrument! Oh, simple, simple toy! How did we not invent this? Children can learn to use it through play… Is it true that all the children where you’re from know how to read? CAPTAIN: Some do. ATAHUALPA: Why not all of them? CAPTAIN: How do I know? Maybe there aren’t enough schools or they don’t want to go… ATAHUALPA: I would make them go… It’s a disgrace they don’t go! Dios”… always in amazement, laughing out loud each time at how easy and obvious it was to read and say. ATAHUALPA: You say Dios to me and I understand that you speak of He who is, for you, creator of the world. I see it, I see it, I see it, I say it and understand it. Letters embody words as the tubes of panpipes embody songs, or better yet, letters embody thoughts… and what does “Idos” mean? CAPTAIN: Go away. ATAHUALPA: And “Sido”? CAPTAIN: That’s the name of an ancient city. ATAHUALPA: And “Sodi”? CAPTAIN: That doesn’t mean anything. ATAHUALPA: How is that possible? CAPTAIN: Well, at the moment, the combination of those letters in Spanish does not make any sense. This doesn’t mean that one day this word won’t be used to name something new. ATAHUALPA: So, letters are waiting for new things to be born. They embody the past, the present and the future. The letters are waiting, things only need to be discovered. Give me letters so that I can make new things! Invent anything you like, I will name your inventions… Have you already named this newly discovered land? CAPTAIN: Peru. ATAHUALPA: That’s a minor river near the coast. We call it Tahuantinsuyo, the four corners of the world. I will kill you with these hands and no one will mourn your death. No one. Not even that woman who attends me, the one you stare at so often. I forbid you to flatter her, speak to her or even to cast your eyes on her. Do you know why? No. You do not know why. This happens with traitors like you who forget why things are the way they are… Not even General Ollantay could marry princess Cusi-Coyllur while his father Inca Pachacutec was alive… I see you still don’t understand… Remember, I will kill you if you speak about what you have seen or if you look once more at that princess who is worth more than you. Leave with your lips sealed or I will kill you… Filipillo ran off in a hurry. The captain, not understanding what had just transpired, asked to be excused. Without losing any time, Atahualpa approached the door of his cell. His presence caused a stir. A Spaniard approached to attend to him. Atahualpa showed him his fingernail. “God,” the Spaniard said and anyone who came close looked at the fingernail and said, “God.” “God,” said one. “God,” said another. An ignorant man said nothing. And Atahualpa looked at him contemptuously. “God,” the last one said because Atahualpa stepped back. ATAHUALPA: Dios, Dios, Dios. Everyone knows how to read His name -except for the ignorant- and their eyes open wide as they do it. One of them made the sign of the cross, another looked at me in hatred, but no one felt indifferent. Thoughts flow from words just as happy or sad melodies flow from panpipes. That is where the songs of birds are hidden. Every song from every bird, born and waiting to be born, each celebrating the rising of the sun. That is where the trickling of every spring lies, the roar of torrents among the mountain rocks until the serene river flows with its unique song through the spacious valleys. That is where the truth of the song lies, the truth of the river flowing fast and serene, its source unknown, replenishing its waters century after century, its spring unknown, the voices of its forgotten spring harmonizing in a majestic symphony. It flows smoothly all year, shores are watered and towns prosper. No one asks why. The river flows smoothly, serenely, melodically, the manifest river made into an inexplicable truth. Where did the river come from? Where did the songs? Where did the letters that mold our thoughts of yesterday, today and tomorrow? The letters they used to write out the truth? Where? What did Father Valverde tell me? Help me remember! WHERE DID THE LETTERS COME FROM? HOW DID THEY WRITE THE TRUTH? HELP ME REMEMBER! HELP ME! Then a storm erupted like no one had ever seen. The men stood silent in the mud. Lightening flashed across the sky for more than six hours straight. The lightening killed everyone who came with the patriarch. A glowing being, whose silhouette remained hazy, descended from the clouds to earth. He appeared to rest on a peak when, suddenly, his being took form, in the shape of a face, among the clouds that erupted in lightening. Instead of crying to his companions, the patriarch stumbled about wildly, looking toward the storm, to see if he who spoke would appear again, but the voice was lost in the thunder, as if the thunder itself had spoken. When he threw himself on the ground in despair, covering his ears and squeezing his eyes shut, a vibrant force, like liquid gold, fiery and trembling, swept him up and made him, still unconscious, engrave the laws of the people: Thou shalt not kill Thou shalt not commit adultery Thou shalt not steal Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife Or his servants Or his ox or his donkey Or anything else that belongs to him It was not a dream, it was not imagined. As the patriarch awoke, he saw the law of God written on the rock. He saw it and could read it: Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not steal. He shouted out in happiness. But no one answered him. He shouted out again: Come! Gather round! But no one answered him. He started running across the flooded land, tripping over the bodies. He continued day and night without straying from the path. Finally he came across some men, mountain dwellers. He shouted out in happiness and wanted to embrace them. But they wouldn’t allow it for they were frightened. He saw that their eyes were filled with fear. His face was giving off rays of light. He then kissed the ground and the rocky terrain became covered with grass. He lay down on his back and thousands of llamas filled the pastures while thousands of men came together in prayer. The patriarch rose, and without saying a word, set back out in the direction whence he came. Everyone followed him day and night, in silence, over peaks and cliffs. Nearly everyone arrived at the rock where the law was written without feeling hunger or fatigue. The patriarch read: THOU SHALT NOT KILL. THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY. THOU SHALT NOT STEAL. Everyone kissed the earth. The sun shone brightly upon the lagoon. The snowcapped mountains could be seen in the water’s reflection. Not even the slightest of breezes made the tall reeds sway. A town nestled in the frozen mountaintops paid homage to the sun. The patriarch spoke for the first time, “I am the child of the sun. It is he who used my own hand to engrave what is written on this stone so that I would be able to read it. This he did not want anyone to witness and so he struck my companions down with his rays. But I will guide them over the path of truth”. This occured centuries ago near Lake Titicaca. Oh, if only it has transpired! If only we had the word of God written on the rock! If only everyone had read it in a book, like the one I threw down with such hatred! If only I could reign again over a people who know the book of truth, a beautiful book that does not contain a single error because God himself wrote it. Because everything within it is accepted by all men. It is written in the here and now, and included the name of the Incas and who their ancestors are and what their greatest feats were, their victories, their tenderness in advising those they defeated to end their human sacrifice, their just revenge on the arrogant tribes they defeated, like the Cañaris, the extermination of the rebels and the repopulation of the provinces with a better race of people. In this there can be no doubt. The blessed children of my realm will read about the great feats of their kings, who conquered Tahuantinsuyo so that peace and justice might prevail. They will learn how my father divided the Inca Empire between my brother and me in order to appease the recently conquered peoples in the north, giving them as monarch a king who was born one of them, and how I waged a just war against my brother because he left Cuzco without defenses, frolicking in pleasures while our common enemy besieged the coastlines. And so much so that, if it weren’t for him, the Christians would not have me in captivity. What will the books say? There cannot be just one book. My brother will find someone who defends him, who will write another book to rival mine. So each case requires two books to explain both sides, and one more book to be impartial. Three opinions per case seem fair to me. And who will write the book about Pizarro? Who will tell the story of his unprecedented feats? Who will speak of his boldness, his bravery and his scorn toward death? What will it say about me? What will it say about my brother, the one who will write out Pizarro’s epic journey? PIZARRO: Don’t be offended because you were imprisoned and defeated; even though the Christians here with me are few in number, I have conquered with them more land than you own and have defeated men greater than yourself, subjecting them to the rule of the Emperor, under whom I serve. FILIPILLO: He says that he has conquered men greater than Your Majesty because, even though the Christians are few in number, they are braver than the Indians and superior. ATAHUALPA: I do believe that. PIZARRO: God allows us, as few as we are, to conquer such a multitude of people so that you can leave behind your savagery and the wicked lives you lead. FILIPILLO: He says that his God will always grant them victory regardless of the number of their enemies. ATAHUALPA: It seems so. PIZARRO: Why aren’t you translating for me? FILIPILLO: He says, “Let’s see.” PIZARRO: He’d do well not to get me angry! Tell him this. We do not wage war unless war is waged upon us. And even if we are able to destroy our enemies, we will not do this without forgiving them first. FELIPILLO: He says the Christians are good because they forgive when they could kill. ATAHUALPA: I have also witnessed the kindness and courage of the Spaniards. FILIPILLO: He says… PIZARRO: Shut up! I don’t care what he says. I’m the one talking. If you were imprisoned and your people the ones defeated, it was because you came with such a great army against us, though we had begged you to come in peace. FILIPILLO: …that you were imprisoned and conquered because, instead of coming in peace, as he had asked, Your Majesty came with armed troops. ATAHUALPA: I wanted to come in peace but my people would not let me, and all those who once advised me are now dead. PIZARRO: What did he say? FILIPILLO: That he came ready for war because the Spaniards had stolen clothing from him and had killed his people, and that all of you are nothing more than thieves, murderers and liars. PIZARRO: Well, you can tell this dog that he threw down the book containing God’s word, and that therefore Our Lord allowed the defeat of his pride, for no Indian may offend a Christian. FILIPILLO: No Indian has fought against a Christian because his God protected the Christians by making them invincible. And this so occurred because Your Majesty threw down the holy book and is haughty, proud, and ignorant. ATAHUALPA: Tell him I know very well that the god who speaks through my idol is not the one true God because he has helped me so little… helped me so little … so little. As he was saying this, Atahualpa grabbed Filipillo and threw him to the ground. He shut the door and walked over to Pizarro, showing him the fingernail where “God” was written. Pizarro, illiterate, fell silent. Pizarro fell silent before the name of God. Seeing this, Atahualpa was astonished, and turned his back on him until he left. As Pizarro was leaving, Atahualpa shouted “God.” CHORUS: What was Atahualpa thinking? How embarrassing! Pizarro does not know how to read. How embarrassing for the conquered Inca! If only he’d been vanquished by his brother, Huascar! Like him, his brother knew about their divine past and their ancestors, more so than the Inca elders, and he also knew everything a leader has to know to reign. How embarrassing! Pizarro does not know how to read, that is, he knows less than his captains knowing not what makes him stronger. Yet despite this he conquered the Inca with the stampede of horses and roar of the cannons. A true uproar. A true upheaval. Nothing more. Brutality, savagery. How embarrassing! How embarrassing! Defeated by some mediocre adventurer, with no choice but to be bold, but an adventurer nonetheless One whose person cannot justify his victory. And just like that the Inca Empire sinks into the sea of oblivion, Its future cut short by an unknown tree, From a black-pelted jaguar. An Empire was sunk by the audacity of an illiterate. How embarrassing! And the Inca is imprisoned at the mercy of the adventuring, fortunate and famed illiterate. How embarrassing! How embarrassing! ATAHUALPA: The ignorant rule the world. Father Valverde says that God is three in one. When Filipillo translates, three plus one makes four. The mystery of the Holy Trinity in the mouth of a demon. How would you expect me to understand? Pizarro triumphs without knowing how to read. Filipillo triumphs while defiling royal blood. Hernán Pizarro, the only one who had shown me compassion and respect, leaves for Spain. One-eyed Almagro, and fat Riquelme, will triumph, along with Father Valverde, who in the name of God would condemn rocks to hell. I am surrounded by enemies, ready to accuse me of everything, even of amassing armies while in captivity. But why would I do that when not a single bird flies or sings in my Empire if I don’t want it to? Is Pizarro mocking me? A dark green comet shot across the sky, like the one that shot through the night a short time before my father, Huayna Capac, died. A comet that forewarns great disaster, the destruction of empires, the death of kings, shot through the sky. I’ve seen it, not quite as wide as a man’s body, and larger than a pica stick. My death is near. Losing my life does not sadden me. What saddens me is to not be able to rule as I’d wished. The history of Tahuantinsuyo will never be written. The laws of this people will not be written so that children will learn them. Nor will they be taught any other truth. They will not believe it. They will always be missing something: the book I will never have written. They will continue believing that there is another truth that is hidden from them, but that speaks through their blood, their traditions, and they will continue mourning me for centuries, mourning for something less and less familiar over time. There will be one mass mourning no person will understand but which everyone will feel. Flowers will lose their scent, birds will not sing, rivers will not flow. The river’s symphonic melody will be forgotten. And they will kill Atahualpa again for the gold, for black gold, for centuries upon centuries. Kill me! It doesn’t matter. Kill me! For now I am ready. The falcon has flown off your coat of arms, Atahualpa, faster than a comet it crosses the starry night flapping its wings across the rainbow. The red, orange and yellow falcon brings Viracocha, the creator of all things, news of your death. Viracocha, do not let go of the white llama descending from heaven every night to drink up the overflowing waters of the sea. Let the earth be overrun. Do not let go of the white llama shining in the starry night. Better still, sacrifice the beast upon the altar of heaven. Let its blood run through the stardust of the galaxies, and not the blood of your favorite son! With your slingshot, throw the blood of the white llama at the snowcapped mountains, but not the blood of your son! Viracocha, can you hear me? When will the gods make sacrifices? The hour of your justice has arrived. Stop the starry llama. Viracocha, can you hear me? Oh, creator, at the four corners of the world, without rival, you who have given life and valor to men. Keep those who you have made happy and healthy, out of danger, and let them live in peace. Where are you? In highest heaven or down below? In the thunder, in the storm clouds? Listen to me. Answer me. Or do you want the Christians to strangle and bury him so that at nightfall the Indians can dig him up and carry him tied to two poles, through mountains and cliffs, to Cuzco, the center of your world, and leave him there with the mummified bodies of his ancestors on display in the main square to pay you tribute in the month of the dead? Is this what you want? To be rendered homage time and again. Answer me, you, hiding in the storm clouds… Answer me! This will be your final tribute. For the last time you will see the mummified Incas on display in Cuzco and the body of Atahualpa, his pale, dark green body, hanging in the main square before your confused people. Faster than the comet, the green falcon, the blue, violet, indigo falcon, has crossed the heavens looking for an answer. FELIPILLO’S DREAM Today I at last took the cloak that covered Atahualpa. Innovation in action ACADEMY PROJECT AT LINCOLN ANNEX NJEA and the New Brunswick Board of Education partnered to develop a model school demonstrating all the attributes of a great public school. The school – also known as the Academy Project – boasts smaller class sizes, quality professional development for teachers, extensive parent outreach, and community partnerships. Begun in 2003, the school is already demonstrating success. The predominately Spanish- speaking parents have taken an active role at the school, visiting classrooms daily and participating in school events. The school has helped foster greater family involvement by offering parents English language classes and innovative resources. School staff works cooperatively with administrators to evaluate and address the individual needs of their students. The result: student performance is thriving. Making schools safer BANGS AVENUE SCHOOL Just three years ago, the Bangs Avenue School in Asbury Park was plagued by violence. Assaults on school staff and student fights were commonplace. Test scores were among the lowest in the state. Eighty-seven percent of the student population, which is largely African American, falls below the poverty line. But thanks to NJEA’s Great Public Schools Initiative, this school has turned around. Eight NJEA staff members working with Bangs Avenue School employees and administrators implemented an all-out reform program. Discipline has improved dramatically. Suspensions have dropped by half, and test scores have soared. The number of fourth-graders scoring proficient on the state language arts test rose from 28 to 67 percent; on the math test, from five to 33 percent. Family involvement is increasing and participation in the Parent Teacher Organization has grown. Family nights have made parents feel welcome at school. Students are taking a new-found pride in their school – and that makes everyone, from school staff to parents to administrators – a winner. Involving families in school Research and experience have shown that when parents are involved in their children’s education, student achievement skyrockets. In 2002, NJEA formalized its commitment to family involvement with the creation of the FAST (Families and Schools Together) Work for Children campaign. FAST is a jointly-sponsored effort of the NJEA, its local affiliates, the Black Ministers’ Council of New Jersey, the Statewide Parents Advocacy Network, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., with additional program support from the NAACP Statewide Education Committee and ASPIRA. The goal of the FAST program is to encourage families to be involved in their children’s education, to enhance their children’s academic progress, and to feel welcome in public schools. Through the FAST program, NJEA members invite parents to school for free workshops which may include learning about study skills, helping their children with homework, and preparing for parent-teacher conferences. Additionally, the FAST program offers families opportunities to enjoy outings to the Children’s Discovery Museum, the Liberty Science Center, NJPAC, New Jersey Nets, and minor league baseball games at no charge. These extra-curricular outings reinforce what the children learn in school and involve parents at the same time. NJEA local affiliates have adapted the FAST program to meet the needs of the families they serve. Some locals have used the program to introduce families to social services, medical facilities, and other community resources. NJEA’s family involvement materials, including the Family Involvement Training Kit and FAST materials, have been translated into Spanish. FAST brings dads and children together Several local associations, including Trenton, Elizabeth, Vineland, Bridgeton, East Orange, and Newark organized “A Day with Dad and Me.” They collaborated with NJEA, their local school board, places of worship, community groups, NAACP, PTO, and PTA. Students had the opportunity to spend some quality time with their fathers at a fun- filled day of games and special activities. While dads participated in a panel discussion, their children enjoyed a performance by Radio Disney personalities. Families spent the afternoon together rotating among 10 creation stations that focused on family involvement strategies to foster confidence, motivation, effort, responsibility, initiative, perseverance, caring, teamwork, common sense, problem solving skills and a focus on learning. What makes a great public school? Research shows that small class sizes, family involvement, job-embedded professional development for educators, high-quality preschools, and community involvement are the building blocks for great public schools. NJEA is proud to be a partner in providing a great public school for every child. Through a variety of initiatives, NJEA has implemented research and best practices from across the country to promote successful schools in New Jersey. In the classroom and in the Statehouse, NJEA strives to provide a quality public education for all of New Jersey’s children. That hard work is paying off. New Jersey leads the nation with the best graduation rate. In New Jersey’s urban schools, nearly 75 percent of graduates plan to continue their educations. NJEA has been – and continues to be – a leader in school revitalization. A commitment to quality schools Through its Great Public Schools Initiative, NJEA supports and advocates for strategies proven to boost student performance – including smaller classes, early childhood education, and family involvement. In addition to school revitalization projects in Camden and Trenton, NJEA has partnered with schools in New Brunswick and Asbury Park to implement best practices for academics and safety. Groundbreaking professional development Quality professional development improves teaching by providing teachers the resources and information they need to update and increase their skills. That is why NJEA supports New Jersey’s groundbreaking professional development initiative. From collegial coaching to action research, educators around the state are participating in meaningful activities that have fundamentally strengthened their skills. The professional development initiative requires each active teacher to acquire 100 hours of professional development every five years. The overwhelming success of the first five-year cycle of the initiative demonstrates members’ commitment to their students’ achievement. Closing the achievement gap: Abbott schools on the move New Jersey’s urban elementary schools are boasting unprecedented gains in reading and math scores, increased parental involvement, and a decrease in school violence. Because of the Abbott decision, New Jersey now ranks as one of the top three states in narrowing the achievement gap between students in the poorest schools and students in general. New Jersey’s Abbott districts provide a national model for what works. In just six years, Abbott districts have cut the achievement gap by more than half, even as New Jersey’s core curriculum content standards raised the bar higher. Language Arts and Math test scores of fourth-graders in the Abbott districts demonstrate some of the dramatic improvement schools have made. Some of the credit for these improved scores has to go to the increased availability of preschool programs for Abbott children. New Jersey leads the nation in preschool enrollment among three-year olds, and ranks among the top for preschool enrollment among four-year olds. A December 2005 report by the National Institute for Early Education Research studied the impact of early access to preschool for children in Abbott districts. The study found that attending an Abbott preschool program raised student performance in vocabulary, math, and prereading comprehension skills. The study concluded that New Jersey’s Abbott preschool program produced significant, meaningful skill development as children enter kindergarten. That foundation has set the stage for the extraordinary gains we are now seeing and can continue to expect in Abbott districts. A bold new initiative NJEA is working with the NJ Department of Education to implement the Secondary Education Initiative, an innovative new approach to the traditional high school structure. Beginning in September 2006, four New Jersey high schools will pilot a program to create small learning communities of students and teachers. Throughout their high school careers, students will continue to study with the same cadre of teachers. Their teachers will make periodic home visits to develop closer relationships with their students’ families and keep them informed of progress. At the same time, students will be adhering to stricter academic guidelines to ensure students graduate with strong basic skills. By 2008, the project will be implemented in every urban high school. Keeping a focus on the future NJEA is proud to partner with NAACP-NJ, ASPIRA, and the Education Law Center to support New Jersey’s commitment to urban schools and Abbott districts. New Jersey has already seen a return on its investment in Abbott schools through dramatically higher test scores at the elementary level. We expect progress to continue at the middle and high school levels. By 2008 all the anticipated improvements in Abbott schools will have been implemented, so New Jerseyans can expect more progress in the years ahead. New Jersey STARS Program NJEA believes that every child has the right to an education, from preschool to college. NJEA supports the NJ STARS program, which is helping students continue their educations even if they do not have sufficient financial resources. NJ STARS provides a free education at any two-year community college for New Jersey students graduating in the top twenty percent of their class, ensuring that any child committed to continuing their education has the opportunity to do so. Maintaining the commitment Quality schools take time, commitment, and resources to develop. Change cannot – and does not – take place overnight. I am a Spanish/English translator, editor, proofreader and interpreter from New Jersey. I have a Master's Degree in Spanish, with specialization in translation studies, from Rutgers University. I have studied abroad extensively in Spain at the Universidad de Salamanca and the Universidad de Valencia.
