Conquérants implacables, les Romains ne sont, au départ, guère soucieux de luxe ni de confort. Mais une fois leur splendeur acquise, les fondateurs de la pax romana construisent des thermes raffinés dont les principes sont encore aujourd'hui utilisés dans le monde entier. Ils y parviennent d'autant plus facilement qu'ils maîtrisent déjà l'hydraulique et la distribution d'eau. Les aqueducs fournissent l'eau alimentant les thermes. Stockée dans de grands réservoirs, elle est distribuée dans les différents bains, pour ensuite être évacuée par des égouts.
Les premiers bains publics apparaissent au IIe siècle av. J.-C. et sont accessibles les jours de marché, c'est-à-dire tous les neuf jours. Très vite, ils ouvriront tous les jours. A Pompéi, ils datent du Ier siècle av. J.-C.; à Rome, Agrippa fait construire les premiers édifices thermaux en 33 av. J.-C. Au fil des siècles, ces établissements s'agrandissent et se multiplient. A Rome, ils sont financés par les empereurs, car l'opération coûte cher, ne serait-ce que pour y faire amener l'eau nécessaire : les thermes de Caracalla peuvent accueillir 1600 baigneurs et nécessitent 1000 litres d'eau par jour et par personne.

The Romans were remorseless conquerors and in the beginning cared little for luxury or comfort. However, once their grandeur had been established, the founders of the Pax Romana built elegant hot public baths. Some of the techniques invented at this time are still in use to this day, throughout the world. They were aided in this by the fact that they had already mastered the techniques of hydraulics and water distribution. The aqueducts carried water to the hot baths. it was then stocked in large reservoirs from which it was distributed to the different areas and was finally flushed out through the sewer system.
The first public baths appeared in the second century BC and were open on market days, which occured every nine days. In no time at all they opened every day. In Pompeii, the baths date from the first century BC; and in Rome, Agrippa had the first hot baths built in 33 BC. As the centuries went by these institutions grew and multiplied. In Rome the baths were funded by the emperors. This was due to the great expense needed to run the baths, notably the cost of bringing in the water : the hot baths at Caracalla could accommodate up to 1600 bathers and needed 1000 litres of water per day, per person.
