COMPENSATION
4.1. ECONOMIC TRENDS
As the end of the year approached, several economic reports were released which indicated the state of the economy is not as bad as the general consensus would have you believe. Yes, consumer confidence was reported down in December, but slow holiday spending and a less than rosy employment picture largely influenced perceptions. Although unemployment fig¬ures could be better, several other important drivers of eco¬nomic recovery were positive.
The final report on Q3 GDP growth remained at 4.0%. This is important to note in that the economy is not contracting but remains moving solidly forward. The ISM Index also reported good news in December. The ISM manufacturing index grew for the first time in four months to a level of 54.7. In a similar vein, industrial production increased 0.1% in November. This was the first increase in the industrial sector in five months. The encouraging ISM Index and industrial production figures point to a marked turn around in an essential piece of the eco¬nomic puzzle.
Adding to the upbeat outlook was the housing starts number reported for November. Construction of new homes was up 2.4% in November. Low interest rates are continuing to en¬courage new home and commercial construction. Alan Green¬span also weighed in on the issue of interest rates and inflation by stating that, "The United States is nowhere close to sliding into a pernicious deflation." Again, there is still plenty of room for economic improvement in the next year, but overall the U.S. economy is growing and is expected to continue to improve over the next few quarters.
