| Translation - English Bilingual education had scored its most important advances by the early 1980s when, during the economic recession of those years, skeptics began questioning the very premises that had led to creating the costly bilingual programs and wondering about the effectiveness of the methods employed to achieve their objectives.
Bilingualism suffered a serious setback in 1998 when the state of California decided to discontinue bilingual education. Surprisingly, the grades of hispanic children showed a tendency to increase, not decrease, when they were put in English-only classrooms. But such results still remain inconclusive and it is expected that the debate will continue. | | Spanish to English: Literatura. Carlos Fuentes. Your mind's begotten Time establishes the means to perceive that certain alternation of light and darkness in a quadrant of your dream. By means of retaining those images of calmness, threatened by the cumulous concentration of black clouds, the announcement of thunder, the posterity of lightning, the discharge of a torrential downpour, the certain appearance of the rainbow; by means of listening to the rhythmic calls from the animals on the mount; by means of shouting the signs of the times; the howling from time of war; the howling from time of mourning; the howling from time of rejoicing. By means, at last, of giving Time a name, speaking of it, of contemplating the nonexistent Time in a universe that knows no Time, unknowable because it has neither beginning nor end. Time never began. Never will it finish. Nor will it know that you invent it as infinity's measure, your purpose undisclosed. | More Less | | Years of translation experience: 3. In my first career I would design and specify application software for the enterprise. Now, I translate the very kinds of technical documents I used to originate. My greatest strength with regard to translation is probably that I am familiar with how complex products are developed; I know what sort of content is expected from each document produced over a product's lifetime.
At the university I am majoring in Spanish, with a minor in Latin American studies; this latter rekindling my long-held interest in the Social Sciences.
Lastly, the sample literary translation included with my profile here shows how my admiration for other people's word-selection and phrasing influences my own creativity.
