The company that provides music, games and video to customers on their PCs is now also offering that content to consumers on their mobile phones.
"Mobile entertainment is a huge opportunity," yyyyy, founder and CEO of XXX, said during a keynote at the CTIA IT and Entertainment show here on Wednesday. "We are committed to mobile just as much as we are to PCs."
The past couple of weeks have seen a bit of a coming-out party for XXX's mobile products. Earlier this month, it announced that its Rxxxxx music service would be offered to Sssss mobile customers. And on Tuesday the company touted a big win with its announcement that ppppp will provide the mobile operator with technology that allows people to watch streaming video on their cell phones.
The ppppp deal is key for XXX as it moves into the mobile entertainment market. Its biggest rival, vvvvv, is being used to deliver streaming TV over eeee's network. The race between the two companies to provide the technology to make this functionality a reality is in full force.
"People want the fastest access to their stuff," jjjjj, vice president of consumer data services for ppppp said, joining yyyyy onstage during his keynote. "And that's what XXX does for us."
Cell phone operators are banking on mobile entertainment to boost revenues. A quick ramp-up in sales over the past 18 months from other non-voice services, such as text messaging and ring tones, has led many mobile operators to expand their offerings of entertainment content, including full-length music tracks, streaming video and games.
| English to Japanese: An excerpt from a book on history of Indian geographical survey General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Geography | Source text - English Pressed about why Mount Everest is so named I would once, perhaps like most people, have come up with the explanation that it was as good a name as any.
For a geographical feature of such obvious permanence and precedence, `Everest' seems to say it all. Up there, more aloof from the bustle of life than anywhere else on earth, the raised snows proffer a pledge of peace, a promise of lasting repose, of being 'ever-at-rest'.
Presumably some international body had ordained the name; or perhaps it was a translation of the mountain's local title. It scarcely mattered. Either way, it was perfectly acceptable.
But, as I now know, these suppositions were totally wrong.
That the world's highest point is in fact called after George Everest, a controversial British Colonel who had never even seen the mountain, let alone climbed it, first dawned on me when I was writing a book about the exploration of Kashmir.
Everest did not feature in the region, either as man or moun-tain, but an institution, dear to the Colonel's heart and known as the Survey of India, did. Most of Kashmir, including the Karakoram mountains, had first been measured and mapped by men of the Indian Survey.
And the Survey being a government department within British India's bureaucratic Leviathan, it had generated copious records.
| Translation - Japanese
| More Less | | Bachelor's degree - International Relations, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies | | Years of translation experience: 12.
