Background

Having graduated from Cambridge University, I joined Deloitte & Touche Chartered Accountants where I trained for the ACA qualification (http://www.icaew.co.uk/) whilst working in Audit. I gained experience of working with small, medium and large businesses across a variety of sectors including education, entertainment and manufacturing. Assignments were often only one or two weeks long so I had to gain a good understanding of a client's business in a very short space of time. I dealt with a range of client staff and regularly produced executive summaries for end-of-audit meetings with company directors. This involved extensive use of Microsoft Word.

My career also benefited from the comprehensive training given for the ACA examinations. This covers a wide range of business-related issues but focuses heavily on financial accounting, management accounting and taxation.

Having left Deloitte & Touche, I gained further experience working in short-term contracts in management accounting at National Tyres & Autocare, Kellogg's and United Cinemas International. During this period I built up an excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, creating complex webs of interlinking spreadsheets.

I then decided to retrain in Information Technology, embarking on a degree course at UMIST. This course covered software development, database design and geographical information systems amongst other things. I was awarded an MSc with Distinction on graduation.

Since then I have spent time at Granada Learning (an educational software house), Marks & Spencer Financial Services and most recently the Science & Technology Facilities Council (formerly CCLRC). During this time I worked in software development (using Java and XML) and data/metadata modelling. During my three years at SciTech, I worked at the cutting-edge of technology and had three papers published:

- NERC Ecological Data Grid (EcoGrid)

- Application of the NERC Data Grid Metadata and Data Models in the NERC Ecological Data Grid (EcoGrid)

These papers demonstrate how I am able to communicate technical information in a clear and logical way. I also gave a number of presentations about my work, so I became familiar with Microsoft Powerpoint.

As a result of my background, I now have a wealth of scientific, financial and IT knowledge and experience to allow me to produce translations that show a true understanding of the source text. I also have a good eye for detail and understand the importance of professionalism - two qualities that have been finely honed during my thirteen years in accountancy and IT.
