Abschwächung der Photonenzahlen
Das Messregime der Einzelphotonenmessung erfordert sehr kleine Flussdichten der Photonen. Sondierende Messungen zeigten, dass diese kleinen Flussdichten bei dem geforderten Mindestwert der Anregungsspannung von 25 keV weder durch Verkleinerung des Röhrenstroms unter 0,04 mA (große prozentualen Stromschwankungen) noch durch Verkürzung der Messzeit unter 1 Sekunde (hoher prozentualer Zeitfehler des vorhandenen Shutters) reproduzierbar erreicht werden können. Damit ergibt sich die Notwendigkeit der geeigneten (erheblichen) Abschwächung durch Absorptionsfilter. Allerdings erfolgt durch den Einsatz von Absorptionsfiltern eine „Aufhärtung" des Spektrums, d.h. der Anteil der harten Photonen im Spektrum erhöht sich prozentual. Diese Aufhärtung ist am geringsten, wenn der Absorptionsfilter eine Absorptionskante im interessierenden Spektralbereich aufweist (vgl. Tabelle 1). Für CuKa-Strahlung (8,05 keV) leisten dies Nickel-Filter, deren Absorptionskante bei 8,33 keV liegt. Im vorliegenden Fall erwies sich eine Filterdicke zwischen 0,18 mm und 0,24 mm als geeignet (vgl. Abschnitt 3). Die Energieabhängigkeit der Transmission dieser Filter ist in Abbildung 3 und Tabelle 1 dargestellt. Aus Tabelle 1 geht zusätzlich hervor, das ein 0,24 mm dicker Ni-Filter die Photonen im Maximum des Bremsbergs bei 17 keV um den Faktor 2 stärker und Photonen einer Energie von ca. 22,5 keV um den Faktor 200 weniger schwächt als die CuKa-Photonen. Allerdings würde ein vergleichbarer Aluminiumfilter das Spektrum wesentlich stärker aufhärten. Qualitativ sind die nach [2] abgeschätzten sowie durch Ni-Filter verschiedener Dicke abgeschwächten Photonenzahlen im Röhrenbremsspektrum in Abbildung 4 dargestellt.
Abbildung 4 zeigt, dass durch den Einsatz von Ni-Filtern das Röhrenbremsspektrum in zwei getrennte Anteile zerlegt werden kann, ein Anteil hat das Maximum bei der Energie der Ka-Linie (8,05 keV), der zweite Anteil hat das Maximum bei der Energie von 22,5 keV.
Spektrale Auflösung
Die spektrale Auflösung der CCD-Kamera wurde durch Aufnahme eines Vergleichspektrums bei Bestrahlung mit monochromatischen CuKa-Photonen bestimmt, wobei die Monochromatisierung durch Bragg-Reflexion an einem Kristall erfolgte. Die Ergebnisse sind in einem Histogramm dargestellt (Abbildung 5). Das Histogramm zeigt, dass die Absorption eines Cu-Photons in einem Pixel 337 Ladungen erzeugt (Maximum der Häufigkeit im Kanal 337), aber auch viele Ladungen auf mehrere Pixel verteilt werden, wodurch die spektrale Auflösung der CCD begrenzt wird. Zusätzlich kommt es zu Ereignissen, bei denen zwei Cu-Photonen gleichzeitig ein Pixel belichten (Peak bei Kanal 674), so dass in der vorliegenden Auswertung die zwischen den Kanälen 200 und 800 detektierten Ladungen den CuKa-Photonen zugeordnet werden.
Strommessungen mit einer absolut kalibrierten Photodiode
Die Strommessungen erfolgten mit der Diode PD300-500CB mit einer Messfleckgröße von 20,2 mm Durchmesser, die somit größer ist als der Strahlquerschnitt nach Verlassen der Kapillarlinse. Die Diode wurde mit monochromatischer Strahlung im Energiebereich von 8 keV bis 30 keV am Elekronenspeicherring Bessy 2 absolut kalibriert (Tabelle 2). Der Messaufbau ist ebenfalls in Abbildung 1 dargestellt.
Die untere Messgrenze der Diode wird durch Schwankungen des Dunkelstroms (wenige pA) vorgegeben. Eine obere Messgrenze der Diode wird vom Hersteller nicht angegeben. Da aber, wie bereits erläutert, aus Strommessungen nur absolute Photonenzahlen bestimmt werden können, wenn Kenntnisse über das Spektrum vorliegen, muss für die CCD-Messungen und die Diodenmessungen mit gleicher Nickel-Filterung gearbeitet werden.

Attenuation of the photon numbers
The measuring regime of the single photon measurement requires very small flux densities of the photons. Sample measurements showed that these small flux densities can be reproducibly achieved at the required minimum excitation voltage of 25 keV neither by reduction of the tube current to under 0.04 mA (large current fluctuations in percent) nor by shortening the measuring time to under 1 second (high time error of the available shutter in percent). Thus it is necessary to achieve the suitable (substantial) attenuation using an absorption filter. However the use of absorption filters leads to a "hardening" of the spectrum, i.e. the fraction of the hard photons in the spectrum increases proportionally. This hardening is the least, if the absorption filter exhibits an absorption edge in the spectral region of interest (see Table 1). For CuKα radiation (8.05 keV) this is achieved by nickel filters, whose absorption edge is at about 8.33 keV. In the present case, a filter thickness between 0.18 mm and 0.24 mm proved to be suitable (see section 3). The energy-dependence of the transmission of these filters is shown in Fig. 3 and Table 1.
From Table 1 it also follows that a 0.24 mm thick Ni filter attenuates the photons at the maximum of the brems-peak at 17 keV twice as strongly and photons with an energy of approx. 22.5 keV 200 times as weakly as the CuKα photons. However a comparable aluminium filter would harden the spectrum substantially more strongly. The photon numbers in the tube bremsspectrum measured according to [2] as well as attenuated through Ni filters are qualitatively represented in Fig. 4.
Fig. 4 shows that the tube bremsspectrum can be split into two separated fractions by using Ni filters, one fraction has the maximum at the energy of the Kα line (8.05 keV), the second fraction has the maximum at the energy 22.5 keV.
Spectral resolution
The spectral resolution of the CCD camera was determined by recording a comparison spectrum for irradiation with monochromatic CuKα photons, whereby the monochromatisation was achieved by Bragg reflexion on a crystal. The results are shown in the form of a histogram (Fig. 5). The histogram shows that the absorption of a Cu photon produces 337 charges in a pixel (maximum of the frequency in the channel 337), but also distributes many charges on several pixels, thus limiting the spectral resolution of the CCD. In addition it can also happen that two Cu photons simultaneously expose one pixel (peak at channel 674), so that charges detected between the channels 800 and 200 are assigned to the CuKα photons in the given evaluation.
Current measurements with an absolutely calibrated photodiode
The current measurements were carried out with the PD300-500CB diode with a measuring spot 20.2 mm in diameter, which is thus larger than the beam cross-section after exiting the capillary lens. The diode was absolutely calibrated with monochromatic radiation in the energy range of 8 keV to 30 keV using the Bessy 2 electron storage ring (Table 2). The measurement setup is likewise shown in Fig. 1.
The lower measuring limit of the diode is defined by the fluctuations in the dark current (a few pA). An upper measuring limit of the diode is not specified by the manufacturer. However since, as already described, only absolute photon numbers can be determined from the measurement of current, if the information regarding the spectrum is available, the same nickel filter must be used for the CCD measurements and the diode measurements.
