REDUCING THE RISKS
The spine and the vertebral column develop from a flat layer of cells whose edges come together to form a tube that becomes hollow cavity inside the spinal cord. This closure of the cord and the bones, or vertebrae, that surround it occurs very early in the development of an embryo usually within four weeks of conception.
Research in the last 10 years has proved that sufficiently high levels of folic acid in the mother’s blood are necessary for normal closure of the neural tube. Mothers with low levels of folic acid have a higher risk of having a spina bifida baby.

La espina dorsal y la columna vertebral se desarrollan a partir de una capa plana de células, cuyos bordes se unen para formar una especie de tubo que se convertirá en la cavidad interior hueca de la médula espinal. Esa fusión de la médula y de los huesos que la rodean -las vértebras- se produce en las etapas iniciales del desarrollo del embrión, generalmente a las cuatro semanas de la fecundación.
Según lo han demostrado las investigaciones llevadas a cabo en los últimos diez años, para que el tubo neural se fusione con normalidad es necesario que la madre tenga un nivel bastante alto de ácido fólico. Las mujeres con un nivel bajo de ácido fólico sufren mayor riesgo de tener un bebé con espina bífida.
