Nel cinema di Leone, nonostante tutto, non sono i flashback a procurare questa insolita eppure quotidiana sensazione: il flashback leoniano pertiene piuttosto alla sfera della visceralità del ricordo, che nel profondo certo comprende un trauma passato e lontano improvvisamente tornato a manifestarsi. Tuttavia, proprio questa dinamica dell’immediatezza e della brevità episodica è estranea ai processi nostalgici, destinati a dipanarsi più lentamente. D’altronde, la nostalgia è qualcosa che non può essere costretta in brevi formule o riassunta in maniera spicciola; è un grumo di sensazioni intense e impalpabili, sia cerebrali che corporee, che inevitabilmente distillano e contrassegnano la vita di tutti sia pure in misura diversa. Gli ammazzasette dei film di Leone non ne sono certo immuni.
La nostalgia, nel cinema di Leone, è però ambivalente e si arricchisce di mille sfaccettature: si può parlare di una nostalgia primaria, assolutamente personale, quella che investe direttamente Leone stesso e il suo pensiero durante il concepimento dei film. Il rifarsi a un cinema popolare di stampo antico che a sua volta viveva sulla rivisitazione e la riproposizione di miti e leggende, archetipi e stereotipi, risponde a una fortissima esigenza intima, quella che vede nel mito la chiave di volta del mondo non soltanto cinematografico. | Translation - English
In Leone’s films, despite this, it is not the flashbacks which produce this unusual, although daily, sensation: Leone’s flashbacks pertain rather to the visceral nature of memory, which consists fundamentally of past and distant trauma which suddenly returns and manifests itself. It is this dynamic of immediacy and episodic brevity that is in fact alien to nostalgic processes, which must develop more slowly. Nostalgia is instead something which cannot be constrained to brief formulas or summarized simply; it is a mass of intense and impalpable sensations, both mental and corporeal, which inevitably mark and infiltrate every life to some extent. Not even the gunmen in Leone’s films are immune.
Nostalgia, in Leone’s films is therefore multifaceted and enriched by infinite nuance: we can speak of a primary nostalgia, which is completely personal and conferred by Leone himself and by his own thought processes during the conception of the films. The recreation of an older type of popular film, which in its own right was born of the revisiting and restatement of myths and legends, archetypes and stereotypes, answers an extremely strong inner demand which sees in myths the key to the world, not only in the cinematographic sense |
