Nabelschnurblut ist sehr gefragt, da es Stammzellen enthält, die schon heute für die Forschung und zur Behandlung schwerer Erkrankungen eingesetzt werden, zum Beispiel der Leukämie, bei der allerdings keine eigenen Zellen zum Einsatz kommen. Die Entnahme nach dem Abnabeln ist risiko- und schmerzlos, allerdings bietet nicht jedes Krankenhaus diesen Service an. Was Forscher besonders fasziniert: Ähnlich wie embryonale Stammzellen sind jene aus dem Nabelschnurblut noch flexibel und undifferenziert, sie können zu verschiedenen Zelltypen heranreifen und unterschiedliche Organe oder Gewebe ausbilden. Krv iz pupkovine vrlo je tražena. Ta krv sadrži matične stanice koje se već koriste u istraživanjima i za liječenje teških oboljenja poput leukemije kod koje se, doduše, ne mogu upotrijebiti vlastite stanice oboljele osobe. Uzimanje pupkovine nakon odvajanja od majke bezbolno je i nije rizično, no ne nudi svaka bolnica tu uslugu. Znanstvenike posebno oduševljava to što su stanice iz krvi pupkovine još uvijek fleksibilne i nediferencirane poput embrionalnih matičnih stanica pa se mogu razviti u različite stanične tipove i izgraditi razne organe ili tkiva. Ovako se otvaraju vrata mogućnostima istraživanja kao i s matičnim stanicama iz ljudskih embrija, no bez potrebe za moralnim dvojbama. |
