Der Erhalt der natürlichen Lebensgrundlage wird seit Beginn der 90er Jahre (Erdgipfel in Rio de Janeiro 1992) verstärkt holistisch thematisiert. Breit angelegte Abkommen wie die Biodiversitätskonvention versuchen dabei, Schutz und Entwicklung, Schutz und nachhaltige Nutzung sowie Schutz und soziale Gerechtigkeit miteinander zu verbinden (KASPAREK ET AL. 2000: 18). Auch ältere Konzepte wie das 1970 gegründete „Man and Biosphere“ (MAB) Programm der UNESCO und das von der Brundtland-Kommision im Jahr 1987 entwickelte „Leitbild einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung“ folgen einer integrativen Strategie (vgl. dazu KNAPP 2000, AACHENER STIFTUNG KATHY BEYS 2005).
Wichtige Begriffe haben dabei eine Neuausrichtung erfahren oder wurden als Schlagwörter neu eingeführt. So ist die Natur heute nicht mehr nur als solche schützenswert, sondern auch aufgrund ihrer Variabilität und Mannigfaltigkeit und dem damit verbundenen Wert (vgl. KASPAREK ET AL. 2000: 12). Diese sog. Biodiversität umfasst die Vielfalt innerhalb der Arten und zwischen den Arten sowie die Vielfalt der Ökosysteme (CBD XXX). Der Begriff wird nach heutigem Sprachgebrauch über die Natur hinaus ausgedehnt und betrachtet z.B. mit der Agrobiodiversität auch die Vielfalt an Nutzpflanzen und –tieren (KASPAREK ET AL. 2000: 12).
Das Naturschutzverständnis hat sich jedoch auch in anderer Hinsicht gewandelt: Es verknüpft den Schutz zunehmend mit der nachhaltigen Nutzung der Natur. Wegbereiter dieses neuen Ansatzes wurden die Biosphärenreservate, in denen der wirtschaftende Mensch ausdrücklich integriert und nicht, wie in älteren Konzepten, ganz ausgeklammert oder nur als teilnehmender Naturbeobachter erwünscht ist (STADLER 2000: 82). | Translation - Spanish
Desde principios de los años 90 el mantenimiento de los recursos naturales de subsistencia va incrementando su protagonismo holístico (Cumbre de la Tierra de Río de Janeiro 1992). Acuerdos firmados de amplia repercusión, como la Convención de la Biodiversidad, intentan en este sentido relacionar conservación y desarrollo, conservación y aprovechamiento eficaz, así como conservación y justicia social (KASPAREK ET AL. 2000: 18). Así mismo, conceptos más antiguos, como el programa de la UNESCO “Hombre y Biosfera“ (del inglés MAB) fundado en 1970 y el programa desarrollado por la Comisión Brundtland en 1987, “Modelo para un desarrollo eficaz“, siguen una estrategia integradora (compárese KNAPP 2000, AACHENER STIFTUNG KATHY BEYS 2005a).
Conceptos importantes han experimentado bien un reajuste o bien han sido reintroducidos con nuevos significados. De esta manera en la actualidad la naturaleza ya no es solamente digna de protección como tal, sino también lo es en base a su variabilidad y diversidad, así como por el valor que ello supone. Esta llamada Biodiversidad comprende la variedad de especies y dentro de las especies, así como la variedad de los ecosistemas (CBD XXX). Dicho concepto se extiende más allá de la naturaleza y contempla por ejemplo, junto a la agrobiodiversidad, también la variedad de plantas y animales aprovechables (KASPAREK ET AL. 2000: 12).
Sin embargo, la sensibilidad hacia la conservación de la Naturaleza ha cambiado en otro sentido: incrementa la relación de la conservación con el aprovechamiento eficaz de la Naturaleza. Cabe destacar la labor precursora de este nuevo enfoque llevada a cabo en las reservas de la Biosfera, en las que se desea que el ser humano emprendedor, explícitamente integrado y no integrado, permanezca, como en los conceptos anteriores, totalmente excluído o que asista meramente como observador de la Naturaleza (STADLER 2000: 82).
