Kommunikations- und Gesprächsstrategien und der Prozeß der Kommunikation

Eine wichtige Grundlage für das Verständnis von Gesprächsroutinen im fremdsprachlichen Gebrauch ist die Berücksichtigung der anzunehmenden mentalen Prozesse, die jede(r) dann durchläuf, wenn er/sie an einer kommunikativen Handlung teilnimmt. KASPER (1982, 1986) und FAERCH/KASPER (1984, 1986) postulieren folgende Prozesse: Der Sprecher erstellt mental einen kommunikativen Handlungsplan, den er mit den ihm zugänglichen Mitteln der Sprache mündlich (oder auch schriftlich) umsetzen will. Durch diese Umsetzung möchte der Sprecher sein kommunikatives Ziel erreichen. WAGNER (1983) stellt fest, daß der Sprecher diejenigen Elemente aus seinem gesamten sprachlichen Repertoire aussucht, die er optimal einsetzen kann, um sein von der spezifischen Situation abhängiges kommunikatives Ziel zu erreichen.
Dadurch handelt der Sprecher von Anfang der Planungsphase an auf strategische Weise. Kommunikationsstrategien und ihre Realisation in Gesprächsroutinen bestimmen die verbale Planung vor und erfüllen die Funktion der Anpassung eines Plans an eine bestimmte Situation. Aus diesem Grund muß jede Äußerung als ein strategischer Beitrag zur Kommunikation betrachtet werden.
FAERCH/KASPER (1985) unterscheiden zwischen automatisierten, vorgeformten Plänen und solchen, die vom Sprecher ad hoc in einer bestimmten Situation erstellt werden. Die automatisierten und vorgeformten Pläne werden hier als Kommunikations- oder Gesprächsroutinen bezeichnet.
Um diesen Prozeß der Automatisierung von Strategien und von ihren einzelnen Erscheinungsformen, nämlich der Routinen, nachvollziehen zu können, muß der Sprecher (d.h. der Fremdsprachenlerner) an möglichst vielen Formen der sprachlichen Interaktion teilnehmen. Diese Interaktion ist notwendig für die Automatisierung der Planungsprozesse und ist auch sehr eng mit dem kreativen Sprachgebrauch in unterschiedlichen Situationen verbunden. Daher ist es nicht wiedersprüchlich zu betonen, daß der Automatisierungsprozeß für den Fremdsprachenlerner notwendig ist, wobei wir aber auch die Kommunikation und den Fremdsprachenerwerb gleichzeitig als kreativen und kognitiven Prozeß sehen. Es entsteht dabei ein Zwei-Phasen-Modell für (fremd-) sprachliche Kommunikationsprozesse und für die Integration von Routinen in das fremdsprachliche Repertoire des Lerners:
1. bewußte Einschätzung und mentale Verarbeitung des Situationsrahmens einer Interaktion und Anpassung von Strategien, die sich u.a. in Routinen realisieren lassen, an die Situation;
2. Automatisierung der Strategien und der zu realisierenden Routinen für sich wiederholende Situationen. Die Routinen stehen dem Sprecher dadurch für die Kommunikation ohne bewußte Verarbeitung frei zur Verfügung.

Communication and Conversation Strategies and the Process of Communication

A consideration of the hypothetical mental processes which are used by everyone when taking part in a communicative activity is an important basis for understanding conversation patterns in foreign language use. KASPER (1982, 1986) and FAERCH/KASPER (1984, 1986) postulate the following processes: firstly, the speaker mentally establishes a communicative plan of operation, which he wishes to implement verbally (or in writing), using the language resources available to him. Through this process of implementation, the speaker aims to reach his communicative goal. WAGNER (1983) establishes that the speaker selects certain elements from his linguistic repertoire which he can deploy to optimum effect in order to reach his communicative goal, which depends on the situation. Thus the speaker acts strategically from the very start of the planning phase. Strategies for communication and their realisation in conversational routines require verbal planning and serve to adapt a plan to a particular situation. For this reason, each utterance should be seen as playing a strategic role in communication.
FAERCH/KASPER (1985) differentiate between automated, pre-formed plans and those which are generated ad hoc by the speaker in certain situations. The automated and pre-formed plans are referred to here as communication, or conversational routines.
In order to be able to comprehend this process of the automation of strategies and its individual manifestations, namely the routines, the speaker (the foreign language learner) must take part in as many types of linguistic interaction as possible. This interaction is needed for the automation of the planning processes and is closely connected to the creative use of language in different situations. Therefore it is not contradictory to emphasise that the automation process is necessary for a foreign language learner, although we also see communication and the acquisition of a foreign language as both a creative and a cognitive process. This leads us to a two phase model for (foreign) language communication processes and for the integration of routines into the learner’s foreign language repertoire:
1. conscious evaluation and mental processing of the situational framework of an interaction and an adjustment of the strategies used, amongst other things, in routines, to the situation;
2. Automation of the strategies and routines best used for recurring situations. The routines are readily available to the speaker for communicative purposes without the need for conscious processing.
