When my wife told me she was pregnant, I got that stomach-churning sensation that hits you on a plunging roller coaster. I was excited, yes, but... oh my God. Parenting was for, well, parents.
So here I stand, bug-eyed and sweating buckets like some poorly-drawn cartoon character, the question marks floating in the air around my head while I try to prepare myself for the complete care and responsibility of another living being besides my cat. I'm responsible for making sure this little human doesn't grow up and turn into a complete monster. If the child turns out a social moron-- my fault. If the babe can't find Luxembourg on the map, blame me for not providing a better education. They'll need therapy, and of course that will be on my head too. So many opportunities for wrong turns!
I remember the day my father sat me down and awkwardly told me about the birds and the bees; it was perhaps the most excruciating and embarrassing half hour of both our lives. I can't do that to another human being.
Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. I can do this, I say; I'll be a great father. My child will be reared a well-rounded, educated, upstanding citizen of the world, and he or she won't hate me.
And then I imagine the baby, still safe within the confines of my wife's belly, suddenly opening an alarmed eye as the thought enters his or her mind: "What if my dad just can't hack it? | Translation - Turkish

Böyle kuruntular için çok erken belki. Bunu yapabilirim diyelim: mükemmel bir baba olacağım. Çocuğum, her açıdan en iyi şekilde, iyi eğitimli, takdir görür bir dünya vatandaşı olarak yetiştirilecek ve kız erkek hangisi olursa olsun benden nefret etmeyecek.
Tabii bu düşüncemin arkasından karımın karnında hala güven içinde uyuyan bebeğimizin kafasına "Ya babam bu işin üstesinden gelemezse?" sorusunun girdiğini ve gözlerinin bir anda panikle açıldığını hayal etmem için çok da zaman geçmesi gerekmiyor.

My name is Binnur Tuncel van Pomeren. My last name is a a reflection of international set-up that my family makes up (Dutch husband, and Turkish myself- plus two South African border collies)
I am a Turkish native speaker, a post-graduate chemist and a full-time professional translator from English, Dutch, French and German specialised in technical + pharmaceutical (cosmetics, medical and natural sciences) fields.
My languages are a product of having lived, worked and studied in various countries including the Netherlands, South Africa and Germany as well as my homeland Turkey where I spent my life until I became 25. Then, I took part in various research projects in the field of chemistry (as the first woman research assistant in European Space Agency as well as the first Turkish to the same Agency for an equivalent position) (Netherlands), research assistant in Unilever (Netherlands) until I decided to go on with my postgraduate studies and I received BSc Hons and MSc degree in Chemistry TUKS, SA.
In my capacity as a freelance translator, I also perform medical translations, for life science and natural science have a lot in common. Recently, I am honoured to say that your medical translations get peer reviews from various collegues and proofread by Volkan, a medicine doctor currently living in USA. Should it happen that your entreprise would like to assign me with a translation project, I am sure there will be sufficient occassion where we will express our thanks to Volkan.
