Source text - English Moral purposes Moral purposes are at the heart of every teacher’s work. They underpin their sense of commitment to their pupils, which includes but goes beyond the instrumental policy agenda of governments. In this chapter, I will discuss the kinds of care and courage which good teachers demonstrate in their everyday work, and what pupils have to say about their experiences of passionate teaching and its effects upon their learning. Teaching is moral in the sense that it is designed to benefit humankind, but teachers may often be blind to their influence on students. Perhaps they are too busy, preoccupied with classroom management and subject-content coverage. This will be more so in secondary than in primary schools, where teachers spend almost every day with the same students. Countless stories by the students or ex-students point to the importance, for good and bad, of the teacher’s personal and interpersonal attributes. Classic films about the influence of teachers – Goodbye, Mr Chip, The Blackboard Jungle, The Dead Poets’ Society as well as numerous texts – are testimonies to the “moralness”, moral complexity and powerful effects of the teachers’ beliefs, style, manner, and values upon students. While it is important not to “sentimentalize” (Jackson, 1999, p. 88), it is necessary to acknowledge that moral purposes are an essential part of all teachers’ roles. Those with a passion for teaching are not content with teaching the curriculum to students. For passionate teachers, professional accountability is about far more than satisfying externally imposed bureaucratic demands or annually agrees targets for action linked to government and school improvement agendas. While these may be important, they do not touch upon the ethical or mental character of the teacher’s work. Rather, such teachers understand that the nature of teaching, the terms of their work, oblige teachers to “place the intellectual and moral well-being of students first ad foremost” through their actions and interactions (Hansen, 1998, p. 651). They know they have a broader influencing role on students’ ways of thinking, feeling and behaving. Sockett argues that techniques of teaching are always subservient to a moral end and, therefore, that the moral character of the teacher if of prime importance. He identifies five major virtues: honesty, courage, care, fairness, and practical wisdom. Chociaż nie można „bawić się w sentymenty” (Jackson, 1999, s. 88), należy pamiętać, że cele moralne są nieodłącznym elementem każdej z nauczycielskich ról. Nauczyciele z pasją nie zadowalają się wyłącznie realizacją materiału. Ich odpowiedzialność zawodowa wykracza daleko poza spełnianie zewnętrznych, formalnych wymogów czy też osiąganie celów corocznie wyznaczanych rządowymi programami. Sprawy te są niezwykle istotne, ale nie mają one nic wspólnego z moralnym czy etycznym wymiarem pracy nauczyciela. Source text - English A brief history of the internet: From the defence force to human relationships The internet, as we know it today, looked very different in its original form. The US Defense Department is responsible for the beginnings of the internet. In the 1960s, they originally built a system where their workers could share data. They called this system the Arpanet. Ironically, the intention was to link computers rather than people; however, the individuals using the system quickly re-shaped it to meet their personal needs. Email was developed relatively early on by the users of the Arpanet, and so the original Arpanet gradually grew into what we know as the internet. By about 1985, the internet was well established as a technology that supported a broad community, including those involved in research and development. Electronic mails (though not in the form we know them today) were being used to send messages across several communities, often with different systems. The World Wide Web was developed in the early 1990s and the commercial release of web browsers started in 1993. Tim Berners-Lee a graduate of Queen’s college at Oxford University is credited with the development of the very first web browser in 1990. Most would also acknowledge that Tim Berners-Lee is credited with helping the web to grow. Berners-Lee was successful at persuading the large research organisation he was working for (CERN) to provide a certification on April 30, 1993 that stated that web technology and program codes were in the public domain. This allowed anyone to use and improve them. Since Cyber-Relationships, the Story so Far 3 then people have improved on the technology, and they continue to do so today. The first of the public web browsers, MOSAIC, was released in 1993, the first version of Netscape was released in 1994, and the first version of Internet Explorer was released in 1995. Although the internet was not originally developed with the intention of linking people, as this chapter illustrates, people began to embrace the technology as a means of communication as well as a way to initiate and develop relationships. This book is interested in how people form online relationships, the trajectory of these relationships, and how successful and meaningful these relationships are. In order to do so we do not treat cyberspace as one generic space, but rather consider a number of different ‘spaces’ available online. It should also be noted that these spaces are not limited to text, but rather can combine photographs, pictures, video (including live video via webcams), and sound (both live and recorded). Some of the spaces we will be considering in this book include: • Email: Email is short for electronic mail and is the transmission of messages over communication networks. It is an asynchronous form of communication where one-on-one as well as communication amongst many is possible (e.g., through discussion lists). An email message usually has three parts – a header, a message, and attachments (which are documents or computer-readable files). Typically, one can identify from the header the source of the email. • Newsgroup: A newsgroup is a continuous public discussion about a particular topic. These are not maintained on a single server. This is a form of asynchronous communication. • Discussion boards/Bulletin boards: Similar to newsgroups, discussion and bulletin boards are websites, or part of a website, that allow individuals to post messages, but does not have the capacity for interactive messaging. These are typically kept on a single server. This is a form of asynchronous communication. • Chat rooms: In chat rooms the conversation is synchronous. When one enters a chat room, they can type a message that will be visible to all other individuals in the chat room at the time. Most chat rooms have a particular theme, although this is not necessary. IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and ICQ (I seek you) are examples of chat systems. • IM (Instant Messenger): IM is also a synchronous communication between two or more users over communication networks. Individuals 4 Cyberspace Romance can have private conversations or group discussions. Unlike chat rooms, individuals often chat to people they already know offline in this space. The instant messaging system usually alerts users when someone on their private list is online. • MUDs/MOOs: Multiple-user dungeons, more commonly understood these days to mean multi-user dimensions or domains. In 1979, Roy Trubshaw, a student at the University of Essex in the UK, is credited for coining the phrase MUD (Cuciz, n.d.). These were originally spaces where interactive role-playing games could be played, very similar to Dungeons and Dragons. MUDs and MOOs are another form of synchronous communication and are typically text-based virtual environments. Participants appear as characters and communicate with other characters online. Many MUDs have hundreds of players logged in at the same time. • MMORPGs: Massively multiplayer online games are an extension of MUDs/MOOs. Most MMORPGs are commercial and require the player to pay a fee in order to play. Like MUDs, the virtual worlds that are created are ‘persistent worlds’, in that the world continues regardless of whether the player is logged in or not. Similar to MUDs, people appear as characters; however, in MMORPGs their characters are usually represented by an avatar, which is a graphical representation of the character they play. • Online dating sites: Online dating sites began appearing in the 1980s and are still increasing in popularity as an alternative or addition to offline dating. Similar to newspaper personals (but with much more information), individuals construct a profile, describing themselves and often providing photographs of themselves and sometimes sound bites and video. Users typically have to pay to use this service and once they identify a person whose profile they like, online contact is made through the system to gauge whether the other individual might also be interested. From there, individuals typically organise to meet face-to-face. • Weblog/Blog: A blog is essentially a personal journal or diary that is placed online. Individuals regularly update their blogs. Individuals who keep a blog are known as bloggers. Bloggers are motivated to keep their journals for a number of reasons – sometimes to gain notoriety, sometimes for personal reasons (e.g., to keep friends up-to-date), and sometimes for professional reasons (e.g., journalist purposes). Rozmowa na czacie jest synchroniczna. Po wejściu do wybranego pokoju użytkownik czatu może tam wpisać wiadomość, która będzie widoczna dla wszystkich pozostałych osób, znajdujących się w tym pokoju w tym samym czasie. Pokoje są zwykle tematyczne, choć nie jest to warunek konieczny. Przykłady popularnych czatów to IRC (Internet Relay Chat) i ICQ (z ang. „I seek you” czyli „szukam cię”). • Komunikatory internetowe. Jest to kolejna forma komunikacji synchronicznej, umożliwiająca porozumiewanie się dwóch lub większej liczby użytkowników. Korzystając z komunikatora można odbyć prywatną rozmowę lub dyskusję w grupie. W odróżnieniu od czatu, w tej przestrzeni często spotykają się osoby, które znają się już ze świata realnego. Komunikatory internetowe najczęściej powiadamiają użytkowników, że ktoś z ich listy znajomych jest właśnie dostępny. • MUD-y i MOO. MUD to skrót angielskiej nazwy Multiple-User Dungeon czyli wieloosobowy loch, dziś rozumiany przeważnie jako wymiar lub domena, w której znajduje się wielu użytkowników jednocześnie. MUD-y znane są od 1979 roku, a wprowadzenie tej nazwy do obiegu przypisuje się studentowi brytyjskiego University of Essex, Royowi Trubshawowi (Cuzis, b/d). Pierwotnie były to miejsca przeznaczone do grania w gry fabularne, takie jak „Lochy i smoki”. MUD-y i MOO to kolejna forma komunikacji synchronicznej, najczęściej opartej na tekście pisanym. Ich użytkownicy występują jako postacie z gry i porozumiewają się z innymi wirtualnymi postaciami. Na wielu MUD-ach zalogowane są jednocześnie setki użytkowników. • MMORPG. Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Online Games, czyli internetowe gry fabularne przeznaczone dla dużej liczby użytkowników, powstały na bazie MUD-ów. Większość serwisów tego typu ma charakter komercyjny i dostęp do nich jest płatny. Tak jak w MUD-ach, świat MMORPG to świat ciągły, który trwa niezależnie od tego, czy dany użytkownik jest zalogowany, czy nie; użytkownicy MMORPG również występują jako postaci fikcyjne, przy czym tutaj każdą z nich symbolizuje „awatar”, czyli obrazek przedstawiający daną postać. • Internetowe serwisy randkowe. Internetowe serwisy randkowe zaczęły pojawiać się w latach osiemdziesiątych XX wieku, a ich popularność – jako uzupełnienia lub alternatywy dla życia towarzyskiego w świecie realnym – cały czas rośnie. Podobnie jak w przypadku ogłoszeń matrymonialnych w prasie (tu ilość informacji jest jednak znacznie większa), użytkownicy takich serwisów budują swój profil, który zwykle zawiera opis użytkownika i jego zdjęcia, a czasem również krótkie nagrania i filmy. Dostęp do takich serwisów najczęściej jest płatny. Po dokonaniu wpłaty, użytkownik szuka osoby, której profil mu odpowiada, i nawiązuje z nią kontakt za pośrednictwem systemu, sondując, czy osoba ta będzie zainteresowana nawiązaniem znajomości. Potem użytkownicy przeważnie starają się umówić na bezpośrednie spotkanie. • Blogi. Blog to osobisty dziennik lub pamiętnik, prowadzony w sieci. Osoby prowadzące blog nazywane są blogerami. Blogerzy regularnie uaktualniają swój blog. Motywacje do jego prowadzenia są różne – czasem jest to chęć zdobycia rozgłosu, czasem względy osobiste (np. przekazywanie bieżących informacji znajomym), a kiedy indziej wymóg zawodu (np. w pracy dziennikarza). Source text - English Social context cues theory The social context cues theory, first proposed by Sproull and Kiesler (1986), states that online and face-to-face communication differ in the amount of social information available. Social context cues, such as those conveyed by aspects in the physical environment as well as non-verbal behaviours, are not typically available online. Sproull and Kiesler (1986) argued, at the time, that because these social context cues are absent online there is an increase in excited and uninhibited online Communications (e.g., in the form of flaming). This theory was one of a few that argued that online relationships are less intimate and more aggressive than face-to-face relationships. Social presence theory Social presence theory, although first devised to explain interactions via teleconferencing, was one of the first theories to be applied to CMC (Computer-mediated communication). This theory contends that social presence is the feeling that one has that other individuals are involved in a communication exchange. Since CMC involves fewer non-verbal cues (such as facial expression, posture, dress, and so forth) and auditory cues in comparison to face-to-face communication, it is said to be extremely low in social presence (Hiltz, Johnson, and Turoff, 1986; Rice and Love, 1987). According to this theory, as social presence declines Communications becomes more impersonal. In contrast, when more information is available about how one physically looks this leads to greater positive regard. Hence, given that there is less social presence online compared to other media (including videoconferencing) CMC is less personal and intimate. Media richness theory Media richness theory takes a similar stance to the previous two theories in that it focuses on what CMC lacks when compared to face-to-face interactions. This theory contends that individuals want to overcome equivocality and uncertainty in organisations and that different types of media typically used in organisations work better for certain tasks when compared to others. As explained by Daft and Lengel (1986): Information richness is defined as the ability of information to change under standing within a time interval. Communication transactions that can overcome different frames of reference or clarify ambiguous issues to change under standing in a timely manner are considered rich. Communications that require a long time to enable understanding or that cannot overcome different perspectives are lower in richness. (p. 560) The types of criteria that Daft and Lengel (1986) used to define media richness include: (a) availability of instant feedback; (b) capacity of the medium to transmit multiple cues; (c) the use of ‘natural language’; and (d) the personal focus of the medium. According to this theory, face-to-face communication is the richest type of media as it provides immediate feedback and utilises more channels (e.g., Trevino, Lengel, and Daft, 1987). Według tej teorii najbogatszym środkiem przekazu jest komunikacja bezpośrednia, ponieważ zapewnia dostęp do natychmiastowej informacji zwrotnej i korzysta z największej liczby kanałów (np. Trevino, Lengel i Daft, 1987). Komunikacja telefoniczna jest mniej bogata, a inne środki przekazu, takie jak komunikatory internetowe i poczta elektroniczna, sklasyfikowane zostały na jeszcze odleglejszych pozycjach (Hancock, Thom-Santelli i Ritchie, 2004).
