InterCity Group committed to sustainability
Intercity Group, one of New Zealand’s largest national transport companies, is set to become a carbon neutral operator by 2010.
The group is working with Landcare Research’s carboNZero programme to attain carbon neutral status on emissions by winter 2007, and the entire operation by 2010.
Landcare Research will work with InterCity to measure, reduce and mitigate its CO2 emissions. The programme is based on five years of scientific research and is independently audited.
'We are philosophically committed to sustainability and feel the robustness and independence of Landcare’s carboNZero programme will help us ensure we are adopting effective, credible measures to help reduce the impact of emissions,' says Malcolm Johns, CEO at InterCity Group.
Alongside this, passengers will have the opportunity to buy voluntary carbon credits in order to offset the emissions generated from their trips around New Zealand.
Research leader for business sustainability at Landcare Research, Professor Ann Smith, said she is impressed with InterCity’s efforts to include its passengers, including international visitors, in its initiatives to reduce its environmental impacts.
Over the past five years Intercity has significantly reduced its carbon footprint by spending $20 million on modernising its fleet. The company voluntarily meets European emission standards.
'Independent assessments indicate an international visitor on a seven to 10-day tour of our country could have up to a 90 per cent lower carbon footprint if they used InterCity and Newmans transport services than if they drove themselves in a modern 2.0 litre rental car. Similar figures apply to international visitors who go on group tours of New Zealand travelling on modern coaches,' says Johns.
This is not the first time the Kiwi-owned and operated company has taken the initiative to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. They were also the first national land transport operator to introduce paperless ticketing in 1998, reducing paper consumption by 80 per cent in the first year.
InterCity Group will buy carbon credits through Landcare Research, which currently sources them from landfill, windpower and native forest regeneration projects that reduce or prevent the production of greenhouse gases.
'The carbon issue is also particularly important for our marine mammal watching business in the Bay of Islands, because the ocean absorbs half of all carbon released into the atmosphere,' says Johns. 'This causes the ocean to acidify which affects the marine food chain.'

Ferner werden Reisende die Möglichkeit haben, auf freiwilliger Basis sog. ‚Carbon Credits‘, ein CO2-Guthaben, zu erwerben, um die Emissionen, die sie im Laufe ihrer Reise durch Neuseeland verursacht haben, sozusagen aufzurechnen.
Die Forschungsleiterin für Nachhaltigkeit in Unternehmen von Landcare Research, Professor Ann Smith, sagte, sei beeindruckt von den Bemühungen von InterCity, die Reisenden, und auch die internationalen Touristen, in die umweltfreundlichen Maßnahmen des Unternehmens miteinzubeziehen.
In den vergangenen fünf Jahren konnte Intercity seine CO2-Bilanz erheblich verbessern, indem es NZ$ 20 Millionen in die Modernisierung des Fahrzeugbestands investierte. Das Unternehmen hat sich freiwillig bereit erklärt, die Kriterien der Europäischen Emissionsstandards zu erfüllen.

Doch dies ist nicht die erste Maßnahme, die das neuseeländische Unternehmen ergreift, um seinen CO2-Ausstoß zu verringern. Es hat auch als erstes Landtransportunternehmen im Jahr 1998 papierlose Fahrkarten eingeführt und damit den Papierverbrauch im ersten Jahr nach der Einführung um 80 Prozent gesenkt.
Die Intercity Group wird selbst über Landcare Research Carbon Credits erwerben. Derzeit geschieht dies durch die Unterstützung von geordneten Mülldeponien, Windkraftwerken und Projekten zur Erneuerung des heimischen Waldes, wodurch Treibhausgase reduziert bzw. diesen vorgebeugt werden sollen.
„Das Problem der Kohlenstoffdioxidemissionen ist auch von besonderer Bedeutung für die Unternehmen, die die Beobachtung von Meeressäugern in der Bay of Islands anbieten, da die Hälfte des ausgestoßenen Kohlenstoffs aus der Atmosphäre vom Ozean aufgenommen wird", sagt Johns. „Dadurch steigt der Säuregehalt des Ozeans, was wiederum die Nahrungskette des marinen Ökosystems beeinträchtigt".

By installing, copying, or otherwise using the SOFTWARE, you agree to be bound by the terms of this EULA. If you do not agree with the terms of this EULA, you may not use the SOFTWARE.

1. Grant of License
1.1. Subject to your compliance with the terms of this EULA, AXXON grants you, the end user, a non-exclusive License enabling you to use the SOFTWARE.
1.2. All conditions stated below apply both to the SOFTWARE as a whole and to all of its separate components.
2. License
2.1. AXXON warrants that it has the exclusive right to license and distribute the SOFTWARE, including all the images, photos, animations, audio-video components, sound, and text incorporated into the SOFTWARE, as well as the accompanying printed materials and all of the SOFTWARE copies.
2.2. Any use of the SOFTWARE outside of or in contravention of the terms and conditions of this EULA shall constitute a breach of the copyright legislation currently in effect and shall give cause for the revocation of all rights to use the SOFTWARE granted to you under this EULA.
2.3. You may make a one-time permanent transfer of this EULA and SOFTWARE only directly to an end user. This transfer must include all of the SOFTWARE (including all component parts, the media and printed materials, and any upgrades). Such transfer may not be by way of consignment or any other indirect transfer. The transferee of such one-time transfer must agree to comply with the terms of this EULA, including the obligation not to further transfer this EULA and SOFTWARE. By transferring your rights to the SOFTWARE to another end user, you lose all the rights granted hereunder and must uninstall the SOFTWARE from your computer or from your Local Area Network.
2.3.1. Providing the SOFTWARE CD-ROM or program files to any other persons for the purposes of installing the SOFTWARE is strictly prohibited. Any such actions will be in breach of this EULA and void your SOFTWARE License and right to technical support.

2.2. Jegliche Nutzung der SOFTWARE, die mit den Bedingungen diesen ENLV in Widerspruch steht, stellt eine Nichteinhaltung der gültigen Vorschriften bezüglich des Urheberrechts dar und gibt Anlass zur Aufhebung aller in diesem ENLV gewährten Rechte zur Nutzung der SOFTWARE.
2.3. Sie können diesen ENLV und die SOFTWARE einmalig und dauerhaft direkt auf einen Endnutzer übertragen. Die Übertragung muss die gesamte SOFTWARE umfassen (einschließlich aller Bestandteile, Datenträger in elektronischer und in Papierform und jeglicher Upgrades). Eine solche Übertragung darf nicht per Zusendung oder auf anderem indirekten Weg erfolgen. Der Empfänger der Übertragung verpflichtet sich zur Einhaltung der Bestimmungen dieses Endnutzer-Lizenzvertrags, einschließlich der Verpflichtung, diesen Endnutzer-Lizenzvertrag und die SOFTWARE nicht seinerseits weiterzugeben. Bei Übertragung Ihrer Rechte an der SOFTWARE an einen anderen Endnutzer verlieren Sie alle Ihnen in diesem Vertrag gewährten Rechte und müssen die SOFTWARE von Ihrem Computer bzw. von Ihrem lokalen Netzwerk deinstallieren.
2.3.1. Die Weitergabe der SOFTWARE-CD-ROM oder der Programmdateien zum Zweck der Installierung der SOFTWARE ist strengstens untersagt. Ein solches Handeln stellt einen Vertragsbruch dieses ENLV dar und führt zum Erlöschen Ihrer SOFTWARE-Lizenz und des Rechts auf technische Kundenbetreuung.
