The Industrial Revolution continued to grow after the Civil War. In the late 1800s, new inventions changed daily life in the United States. Factory machines were able to produce goods in bulk. The new Bessemer steel process cut the cost of steel and made it more widely available. Steel railroad ties were used to expand the railroads and make building beams. Thomas Edison’s practical electric lighting began to replace gaslights. As electric power became more common, inventors created new inventions that ran on electricity. Alexander Graham Bell created a new industry when he invented the telephone in 1876. Other inventions, such as the typewriter and sewing machine, led to new industries and created jobs for women.
