Thomas Edison’s practical electric lighting began to replace gaslights. As electric power became more common, inventors created new inventions that ran on electricity. Alexander Graham Bell created a new industry when he invented the telephone in 1876. Other inventions, such as the typewriter and sewing machine, led to new industries and created jobs for women.
