Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.
On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long.

कामुकता और किसी लतखोरी वाले मादक पदार्थ में एक चीज़ समान होती है: इसके आनंद में जबरदस्ती का भाव रहता है जिसे हम आधे मन से स्वीकार करते हैं, और आधे मन से नहीं भी। इस प्रकार आरंभ से ही मानव जाति कामुकता से तबाह हुए बिना इसका लुत्फ़ उठाने की कोशिश करती रही है। हमारे समाज और धर्म इस विकट पहेली के जो विभिन्न समाधान पेश करते हैं उन्हें उसी रूप में परिभाषित किया जाता है। बहु-पत्नीत्व, कुंठित एक-पत्नीत्व, अवैध प्रेम प्रसंग सहित एक-पत्नीत्व, वेश्यागमन सहित एक-पत्नीत्व, लगातार एक-पत्नीत्व। अलग-अलग व्यक्तियों की भारी कल्पनाशीलता, या दुस्साहस भरी जुगतों की तो बात ही निराली है: विक्टर ह्यूगो ने अपने ऑफ़िस की दीवार में इसलिए एक दरवाज़े का इंतज़ाम किया हुआ था कि वह हर रोज़ दोपहर को किसी लड़की को अंदर बुला सके। ऑडेन को शहर-शहर घूमकर कॉल-ब्वाय ढ़ूँढ़ने का चस्का था। पिकासो की पत्नी और रखेल दोनों ने जब उसे उनमें से किसी एक को चुनने की चुनौती दी तो वह साफ़ मुक़र गया। फिर कमीज़ पर बाल पाए जाने का किस्सा तो सदियों से चला आ रहा है। परंतु जब आप एक नई तरोताज़ा परंतु छल-कपट पूर्ण जिंदगी जीकर जागते हैं तो यह याद रखना ज़रूरी है कि कामुकता का जुगाड़ न तो आपके लिए, और न ही शायद केवल प्राणिमात्र के जीवित रहने के लिए किया गया था, बल्कि यह तो देवताओं के भोगविलास के लिए किया गया था। कामोद्दीपन और परपीड़न सुख के इतने अधिक अवसर पैदा कर सकने के मामले में कामुकता से बढ़कर कोई और चीज़ नहीं है। यही कारण है कि इस विषय को लेकर इतनी अधिक किस्सागोई होती आ रही है। हेलेन के विश्वासघात के अंजाम को देखने के लिए स्वर्ग की अट्टालिकाओं में देवताओं की भीड़ मानो उमड़ ही पड़ी थी! और आपके दोस्त-यार भी तो आप पर नज़र रखे हुए हैं। देर रात तक चलनेवाले किस्सों की गुफ़्तगू में आपके कारनामे चार चाँद लगा देते हैं।
इतिहास और पुराण दोनों ही इस बात के गवाह हैं कि अपनी चालाकी से ज़िंदा बच निकलनेवाला तिकड़मी ओडिसियस ऐसा पहला इंसान था जिसने देवताओं की आँखों में धूल झोंकने की कला में निपुणता हासिल कर ली थी। और शायद उसकी सबसे ज़्यादा शातिर चाल वह थी जिसमें उसने जलपरियों की आवाज़ कानों तक पहुँचने से पहले ही खुद को मस्तूल से बाँध लिया था। हालाँकि ऐसे लोग भी होते हैं जो रेलिंग के किनारे खड़े रहकर खुश रहते हैं, और दूर क्षितिज में ताकते रहना पसंद करते हैं। नहीं तो, आप अपने मस्तूल चुन लें, अपनी मनपसंद रस्सियाँ ढूँढ़ लें: खेलकूद की, काम में तल्लीनता की, घंटी लेकर भगवान के भजन में निमग्न ब्रह्मचारी बने रहने की...लेकिन सबसे ज़्यादा नरम और कठोर रस्सियाँ शायद उन उपनगरीय वानप्रस्थियों के पास मिलेंगी जिनके बच्चे हुड़दंग करते रहते हैं और उनकी एक अदद बीवी उन्हें ज़्यादा देर तक चैन से नहीं बैठने देती।

अभावों और दुःखों का सागर बन जाता है।
आज हम ऐसे आप्लावित समुद्र में तैर रहे हैं,
और हमें उठती लहर का लाभ उठाना होगा
