I grew up in Bogotá, Colombia (17 years), where we like to think that we have “una de las mejores expresiones del Espanol,” (sin querer ofender a nadie) because of it’s closeness to the Spanish spoken in Spain (One of the best expressions of the Spanish language, no ofense). During my school years, language subjects were always my favorites, such as "Castellano" (Spanish Grammar and Usage) and English. Although I didn’t have the resources for attending a bilingual school, my love of learning drove me to a self study of the English language through the use of tapes and reading materials, and of course, a dictionary at hand.
When my mom and I moved to Arizona, we attended a Community College for their ESL program. I tested to join the highest level right away and got very good grades from the start. After that we moved to California. Because of my bilingual skills, I was hired as a teller and promoted me to a Vault Teller (Senior Teller) position at a community Bank in Santa Maria.
I decided to further my education and grow in my knowledge of the Bible. Therefore, I attended Emmaus Bible College. I must say that attending an American college in a full-time basis was the best thing that I could have done for improving and excelling in my verbal and written communication skills. We had to write long papers al the time. And although, I can honestly say that I dreaded writing in English, I came to love it by the time I became a senior in College.
In addition to that I worked as a Bilingual Verifications Assistant for Advanced Data Com while I was finishing my degree and I served as an interpreted for the Jo Daviess Health Department in Galena, IL. I have enjoyed the English language so much that I am working towards becoming a writer. I would like to be able to publish materials in both Spanish and English in the future. For now, I want to aid those who already are and continue my life long study of languages. I believe that language is an art in itself and those who dedicate themselves to learning such an art, experience the beauty of colors never yet seen by the sleeping eyes of those who never choose to embrace its beauty. I should add that I am legally permitted to work in the United States, where I reside and I am in the process of becoming a US citizen, this coming year! |
