The word “recycling” conjures up images of consumers sorting and segregating their newspapers and bottles, hauling out special bins for their trash collectors on appointed days.
But while recycling of newsprint, cans and bottles is on the rise, there’s a material being recycled that outpaces those efforts by a mile. Batteries.
The recycling rate of batteries exceeds 97 percent—higher than any other recyclable commodity, including newspapers (45 percent), aluminum beverage cans (55 percent), glass bottles (26 percent) and tires (26 percent).
Leading by Example
Part of the reason there has been such an upswing in battery recycling: xxx. Years ago, the company recognized the environmental and business benefits of wide-scale and extensive recycling efforts, reusing and repurposing a host of materials and refuse from various manufacturing processes. The world’s voracious need for batteries provided the company with another opportunity to recycle—this time, the lead inside spent batteries—and the batteries themselves.
Two Choices
There are two ways that batteries can be recycled. The first involves segregating all battery parts, like the plastics, metals and acid. The second way, favored by xxx’ yy operation for its efficiency, involves wholesale processing and smelting of the battery once the battery’s acid is removed. Batteries are smelted in a shaft furnace with a mixture containing additives such as coke, limestone and iron. These additives promote smelting and cleanse the lead of its impurities.
Additionally, the gases produced during smelting are captured and reheated, burning off any organic matter still contained.
