The Duke set up Camp III on May 27 at the base of a southeast spur of the mountain and split the men into teams to make a reconnaissance. The results brought back to camp the next day were not encouraging. From base to summit, K2 rose 12,000 feet (3,658 meters). W założonym dwudziestego siódmego maja obozie III, u podstawy południowo-wschodniego żebra K2, książę podzielił wspinaczy na grupy rekonesansowe. Gdy zebrano się ponownie w pełnym składzie, by przedyskutować przebieg alpinistycznego rozeznania, okazało się, że jego wyniki niestety nie napawają optymizmem. Od bazy wysuniętej u podstawy góry do jej szczytu różnica wysokości wynosiła 3658 metrów! Jeśliby chodziło jedynie o czas potrzebny na rozmyślania (a podczas marszu myśli się najlepiej), mogłabym jako cel wybrać równie dobrze biegun północny albo najbardziej wysunięty na południe kraniec Europy. Ale kiedy usłyszałam o Santiago de Compostela, było dla mnie jasne: to masz zrobić, tam musisz iść. |
