Первые цивилизации возникли на севере Африки и в Малой Азии – египетская и шумерская (обе примерно с 3400 до 500 г. до н.э.), затем – критская или минойская (с 2500 до 1400 г. до н.э.), во второй трети последнего тысячелетия до н.э. – греческая. Территории этих циви-лизаций становятся перекрестком, связывающим Европу, Азию и Африку. Многочисленные походы и войны, завоевание территорий, народов, международные торговые связи, переселения способствова-ли распространению знаний, перемешиванию и возникновению новых этносов и языков. В долине реки Инд цивилизация развива-лась аналогично Египту и Месопотамии и была одной из нескольких крупных бассейновых цивилизаций. Затем развиваются цивилизации на территориях нынешних Индии-Пакистана и Китая. Они также прошли стадии земледелия, скотоводства, бронзовых и других ору-дий, появления письменности, строительства городов, храмов, созда-ния государств, практически появления административных пирамид и пр. В какой – то момент на историю древней Индии и ряда приле-гающих территорий повлияло вторжение с севера – примерно с территории нынешней Украины и юга России ариев, смешавшихся с местным населением и образовавшим правящую верхушку.
Китай был частично изолирован Тибетом, Гималаями, пустынями и степями Гоби и, вообще, находился дальше от первых древних циви-лизаций. Соединив в единое государство многочисленные народности, на более поздних этапах он пытался защитить себя от нападений с севера многотысячекилометровыми стенами; географическая отдален-ность и трудности коммуникаций обеспечили Китаю значительную самобытность. Этой цивилизации удалось в отличие от ряда других во многом сохраниться до нашего времени; по крайней мере, уцелели территория, письменность, многие обычаи, национальный характер и др. Хотя и у Китая перед началом новой эры оживился обмен ин-формацией с Западом. В более позднее время он не раз предприни-мал экспедиции для установления торговых и дипломатических контактов с дальними странами: действовал шелковый путь, в начале XV несколько китайских флотилий из десятков судов достигали восточного побережья Африки (примерно за сто лет до прибытия в Америку Колумба).

The first civilizations, Egyptian and Sumerian, appeared in North Africa and Asia Minor (they existed from about 3400 to 500 BC), followed by the Cretan, or Minoan, civilization (from 2500 to 1400 BC) and the Greek civilization that existed in the second third of the last millennium BC. The areas occupied by these civilizations developed into major points of con-tact between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Numerous forays and wars, con-quests of neighboring areas and peoples, development of intergroup trade, and migration stimulated proliferation of knowledge, ethnic intermixing, and formation of new languages. The Indus river valley civilization devel-oped in a pattern similar to the civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia. The Indus civilization ranks among the few largest river basin civilizations. Coming next on the time scale are the civilizations which populated the areas currently belonging to India, Pakistan, and China. These civilizations also developed through stages of crop farming, livestock farming, bronze-tool making, a written language, construction of cities and temples, forma-tion of states and power hierarchies. There was a moment in history in which ancient India and its neighboring territories were influenced by an Indo-European invasion from the north (from the territory of modern Ukraine and southern Russia); the Indo-Europeans mixed with locals and formed the ruling elite.
China was partially isolated by Tibet, the Himalayas, and the Gobi De-sert and was located farther from the first ancient civilizations. Later, having united numerous peoples under the umbrella of a unitary state, China built a many-thousand-kilometer-long wall in attempt to obtain protected from potential invasions from the north. Thanks to the remote-ness and natural barriers, the Chinese, unlike many other civilizations, have managed to preserve their identity and original traits to the modern day. In addition to their territorial integrity, the Chinese have retained their language and many customs and ways of life. China's communication with the West increased shortly before the start of the Common Era. Later, the Chinese undertook efforts aimed at establishing trade and diplomatic contacts with faraway countries. The Great Silk Road was established, and in the early 15th century several Chinese flotillas of several dozen vessels each reached the east coast of Africa (about 100 years before Columbus' discovery of America).

В фильме «Пандемия» корпорация Би-Би-Си представила свой взгляд на реальность в случае, если сбудутся пессимистические прогнозы ученых. Опустошенные, без каких-либо признаков жизни территории и города — это впечатляюще! У вирусологов и специалистов по эпидемической безопасности достаточно оснований для беспокойства — мир микроорганизмов становится все более агрессивным. К угрозам естественного происхождения добавилась новая, еще более страшная — биотерроризм. Инфекционные агенты могут попасть в воду, продукты питания — и тогда не в кино, а в реальности могут разыграться самые драматические события. О том, что опасность ожидает нас в любое время и нельзя терять бдительности, свидетельствуют вспышки смертельных инфекций, в последнее время взбудоражившие весь мир, — атипичная пневмония (SARS), птичий грипп. Все чаще слышно об «экзотических» инфекциях, которые в эпоху глобализации приобрели «странствующий» характер. Недавно — уже не в далекой Азии, а совсем рядом, в Европе — вновь активизировался птичий грипп. Массовая вспышка этого заболевания произошла на птицеферме в Чехии. Потом появилась «нюрнбергская находка» — опасный для человека вирус обнаружили в Германии (Нюрнберг) у мертвой дикой птицы. Украину в последнее время Бог миловал от такой напасти. Но у нас и без того хватает оснований для беспокойства. С наступлением лета, как правило, возрастает угроза кишечных инфекций. Несколько дней назад массовое пищевое отравление произошло в детском оздоровительном лагере «Чайка» в Одесской области. Тем более обидно, что детей привезли погреться под южным солнышком из соседней Беларуси. С нашими акваториями тоже неладно — массовая гибель рыбы в Азовском море отпугнула многих желающих отдыхать на морских побережьях. Раз за разом вспышки инфекций укладывают людей на больничные койки. А то вдруг «по неустановленным причинам» массово заболели дети после туберкулинодиагностики. Чего еще можно ожидать? In its documentary, Pandemia, BBC presented its vision of what might happen if the pessimistic forecasts made by scientists come true. Devastated and lifeless lands and cities looked very impressive! Virologists and epidemic specialists have enough reasons for concern as the world of microorganisms is becoming increasingly aggressive. Adding up to natural threats is a new, yet more horrifying one, – the threat of bioterrorism. Infectious agents might enter water or foodstuffs, and if such happens the most dramatic events would occur in reality, not just in a movie. Pointing to the danger and its permanent presence are periodic outbreaks of deadly epidemic, such as SARS or Avian Flu which shook the world in the most recent past. This means we should stay vigilant. Increasingly often we hear about "exotic infections" which have acquired "migrating" character in the epoch of globalization. Thus, a new outbreak of Avian Flu has been reported recently, and not in the faraway Asia, but in the close neighborhood, in Europe, at a poultry farm in the Czech Republic. A bit later, there came the so-called "Nuremberg find": a dangerous-to-humans virus was found in Germany (Nuremberg) in dead wild birds. Ukraine has been saved these calamities so far. That notwithstanding, we have enough reasons for being worried. Summer is usually the time when intestinal infection risk soars up. Several days ago a massive food poisoning was reported from the "Chaika" children resort of the Odessa Region. The event is all the more so saddening as the children were brought from the neighboring Belarus to get a bit of southern sunshine. Arousing concern are the country's water reservoirs too: A massive fish mortality in the Azov Sea has scared the vacationers off. More and more disease outbreaks are sending people to hospital wards. I wonder what were the "undetermined causes" behind the recent incident where children suffered from complications after a tuberculosis diagnostics procedure? What else should we expect to happen now?
First Deputy Minister of Health Care and Chief Medical Inspector of Ukraine, Sergei Berezhnov, discusses situation with infectious diseases, points to the risk factors we should be watchful of and outlines state policy in the area of sanitary-epidemiological safety and security.
