| Source text - English Winters used to be cold in England. We, my parents especially, spent them watching the wrestling. The wrestling they watched on their black-and-white television sets on Saturday afternoons represented a brief intrusion of life and colour in their otherwise monochrome lives. Their work overalls were faded, the sofa cover—unchanged for years—was faded, their memories of the people they had been before coming to England were fading too. My parents, their whole generation, treadmilled away the best years of their lives toiling in factories for shoddy paypackets. A life of drudgery, of deformed spines, of chronic arthritis, of severed hands. They bit their lips and put up with the pain. They had no option but to. In their minds they tried to switch off—to ignore the slights of co-workers, not to bridle against the glib cackling of foremen, and, in the case of Indian women, not to fret when they were slapped about by their husbands. Put up with the pain, they told themselves, deal with the pain—the shooting pains up the arms, the corroded hip joints, the back seizures from leaning over sewing machines for too many years, the callused knuckles from handwashing clothes, the rheumy knees from scrubbing the kitchen floor with their husbands' used underpants.
When my parents sat down to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoons, milky cardamon tea in hand, they wanted to be entertained, they wanted a laugh. But they also wanted the good guy, just for once, to triumph over the bad guy. They wanted the swaggering, braying bully to get his come-uppance. They prayed for the nice guy, lying there on the canvas, trapped in a double-finger interlock or clutching his kidneys in agony, not to submit. If only he could hold out just a bit longer, bear the pain, last the course. If only he did these things, chances were, wrestling being what it was, that he would triumph. It was only a qualified victory, however. You'd see the winner, exhausted, barely able to wave to the crowd. The triumph was mainly one of survival. | Translation - Spanish Los inviernos eran fríos en Inglaterra. No había otra opción.
| | English to Spanish: BATTERY IGNITION | Source text - English 145. Function
Ignition of the fuel-air mixture in the engine cylinder may be acomplished by either of two methods; by heat of compression as in diesel engines or by electric spark as in gasoline engines. Spark ignition may be subdivided into two classes: battery and magneto. These two systems are essentially the same. With either, the fundamental job is to step up low voltage to a much higher value, 15.000 to 20.000 volts, and to deliver the high voltage to the spark plugs with the proper timing. The high voltage is capable of pushing current through the high resistance set up by the pressure in the combustion chamber and across one spark plug electrode to the other. The hot spark created ignites the fuel-air mixture. This section pertains to battery ignition, its theory and operation; paragraph 151 through 159 describe magneto ignition. | Translation - Spanish 145.
| | English to Spanish: GENERAL TRANSCEIVER DESCRIPTION | Source text - English 4.1.1. INTRODUCTION
The transceiver comes standard with eight channels, CTCSS, scan, time-out timer and other features. These features are all selectable when programming the transceiver. The transceiver contains main and audio/logic PC boards. The main board contains the synthesizer, receiver, and transmitter; the audio/logic board contains audio processing and digital control circuitry. Brief descriptions follow in this section and then more detailed descriptions are located in Sections 4.2-4.5. A transceiver block diagram is shown in Figure 4-1.
Circuit protection is provided by a 7-ampere fuse in the power cable and two 4-ampere fuses on the main board. The power cable fuse protects the final amplifier circuitry and also provides overall transceiver protection. The 4-ampere fuses protect the low-current circuits of the transceiver. | Translation - Spanish 4.1.1.
| More Less | | Years of translation experience: 49. Registered at ProZ.com: Sep 2007. When I first joined ProZ.com, some three years ago, I did it with a mixture of expectancies and doubts, for I was not coming from the translation industry. I had the language knowledge, a long time performing translation work, and a lifetime of experience in my interest technical fields. But I was new to the trade and I had to learn the uses and “how-to” of the profession. I knew I had the ability to translate, but this alone was not enough to ensure a successful performance.
As a former worker in those areas, I have a vast bilingual experience in technical fields. I had what I would call "expertise" in a couple of subject areas. That means that I am confident about translating in those areas, I can follow the logic of the texts and the principles behind them, I have a direct grasp of the way people in the trade in my target language phrase things, I have a number of paper reference works (bilingual and monolingual in both languages) and a good grasp of the Internet sources that I can refer to when I need to do so. And in several aspects of these subjects I have attended formal training. Expertise is knowing enough about a specific subject area to the point of being able to coherently write one's own concepts and ideas on the subject in both source and destination languages. It means I know the nuts and bolts in that area, and I am able to understand the meaning of the message even in poorly written text.
I only translate into my native language, and even though I can handle general texts, I prefer to stick to my fields of expertise, where I can provide clear, concise and well written translations. I am heavily concerned about quality, and put the necessary effort to ensure every job is delivered complete, fully checked, and on time.
