Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a common chronic metabolic disorder which can lead to
substantial morbidity and increased rates of mortality. Recent landmark studies have
shown that control of hyperglycemia lowers the risk of chronic microvascular diabetic
complications such as retinopathy and nephropathy. The Diabetes Control and
Complications Trial1 and the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS)2
compared intensive with standard glucose management in subjects with type 1 and type 2
diabetes, respectively, and showed a reduced risk of complications with improved
glucose control. The results of these studies have established tight glucose control as a
