{And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge.} [Quran 30:22 (translated)]
A language lover
I am a native of Arabic who learned English at an early age at the hands of American teachers, which made me appreciate both languages and feel equally comfortable with the two of them. When it was time to join university, I chose English literature and translation as my major and Spanish as my minor. I also have a fair command of French.
Translation: A bilingual’s bliss
What better could a bilingual do than translating? Editing a translated text? Perhaps. I started freelancing in different translation arenas when I was still a senior at the university.
Lush technical and scientific experience from working with non-profitable international organizations
After my graduation I had a full-time job with the USAID’s Energy Conservation and Environment Protection Project; for three years, I edited and proofread the project’s technical reports.
I also worked with the German Technical Cooperation Fund in Cairo on freelance basis, translating agreements, contracts, urban development assessment reports and action plans; all from English into Arabic.
During the past two years I worked on the extensive project of translating and back-translating the survey questionnaires and the survey result reports of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS3), a health and demographic survey that is conducted in many Arab countries, by the League of Arab Countries in collaboration with the UNICEF.
In the legal field, language plays the number one role
If I was not a translator, I believe I would have been a lawyer... or a paralegal. It fascinates me how all the laws, agreements and legal actions depend on language. I believe this reflects on how legal documents... with utmost care.
Subtitling and dubbing: the art of being concise
For three years, full-time, I reviewed the English subtitles of all materials to be broadcast by the Arab Radio and Television Network, including talk shows, TV serials, movies, documentaries, and Iqra Channel's Islamic programs. I take pride in co-translating and editing a 400-hour scientific-medical documentary.
When Al-Jazeerah Children Channel was preparing for inauguration, I had the pleasure of translating around 90 hours of scientific animated cartoons, targeted at primary school children; which were dubbed and broadcast when the channel first came into existence.
Considerable civil engineering and architectural translation background
I have had the fortunate chance of providing language services on a long-term basis to two construction companies in Cairo and Dubai.
Translation agencies… less earning, broader learning
I like working with translation agencies because of the diversity of the projects they assign, from legal and judicial translation to medical and pharmaceutical translation, not to mention the scores of agreements and user guides.
Islamweb… Thoroughness and accuracy
This is my third year as a translation reviewer with Islamweb, a Qatari-government sponsored Islamic website with hundreds of thousands of audience from everywhere in the world. With religious texts, there can be no tolerance for being the least inaccurate.
An eye on copywriting
Although I have not actually worked as a copywriter, but I have employed considerable copywriting skills in translating and localizing quite a large number of press releases of world famous brand names.
News reading and news editing… Tributaries to mainstream
For 10 years I had a parallel career as a radio newsreader, which was quite a language-polishing experience. On occasional basis, I do news monitoring and editing in English and Arabic for a Middle East news alert service.
A fully-equipped early bird and night owl
I have always had what it takes to effectively adjust my working and availability hours to the requirements of each job and client.
