After suffering from PMS for over a decade, Debra Van Wert, 44, of Rochester, New York, started recording her symptoms. Three months later, she saw a pattern. "Writing helped me anticipate hormonal phases and identify which weeks I felt my best and worst," says Van Wert. Today, she's in better control of her condition.
She had the right idea. Researchers are discovering that keeping a journal can reduce pain, help with weight loss, even ease serious stress. "Writing may produce changes in immune or hormonal responses to stress, and improve relationships and our capacity to cope with stress," says Joshua M. Smyth, a psychologist at Syracuse University. He found that writing about a traumatic experience eased pain in rheumatoid arthritis patients and boosted lung function in asthmatics. Other research has found the following benefits of writing:
Lose weight Keeping a detailed food diary has been shown to help people drop pounds. In one study it was the strongest predictor of weight loss. Researchers with the Women's Health Initiative found that food diaries help create awareness about calorie consumption and fat intake. And when you know how much you're eating, it's easier to make changes.
Improve sleep At Temple University, women who wrote about traumatic experiences like rape or a serious car accident reported fewer headaches, sleep problems and depressive symptoms than those who didn't.
Fight illness In a 2002 study at Israel's Ben-Gurion University, people who wrote about a stressful event made fewer visits to health clinics over the next 15 months.
Slash stress In a study at Chicago Medical School, when cancer patients who lacked family support wrote about their illness for 20 minutes a day, they reported less stress for up to six months.

نوشتن می تواند در کم کردن وزن ، کاهش استرس و کنترل سلامتی بدن به شما کمک کند. خانم دبرا ون ورت، 44 ساله از منطقه ی روچستر نیویورک پس از حدود یک دهه ابتلاء به بیماری سندرم پیش از قاعدگی (pms) شروع به نوشتن بیماری خود کرد؛ او پس از سه ماه متوجه روند خاصی شد که در مورد آن می گوید : " نوشتن کمکم می کرد تا مراحل هورمونی خود را پیش بینی کنم و در نتیجه می دانستم که چه هفته هایی حالم خیلی خوب و چه هفته هایی حالم خیلی بد می شد." خانم ون ورت حالا می تواند شرایط سلامتی خود را بهتر کنترل کند و اتفاقاً نظرش هم در مورد نوشتن درست است.
پزوهشگران در پی کشف این مساله اند که آیا یادداشت های روزانه نقشی در کم کردن درد ، وزن و حتی کاهش استرس شدید دارد. جو شو ام .اسمیت روان شناس دانشگاه سیراکوز می گوید: نوشتن ممکن است تغییراتی در سیستم ایمنی بدن یا واکنش های هورمون ها نسبت به استرس صورت بدهد که باعث کنار آمدن بهتر و افزایش توانایی ما در کنترل آن می شود . اسمیت متوجه شد که نوشتن در باره تجربه ی دردناک می تواند باعث کاهش درد بیماران مبتلا به روماتیسم مفصلی می شود و همچنین افزایش ظرفیت ریه در بیماران مبتلا به آسم را بدنبال دارد.
سایر تحقیقات فواید زیر را در مورد نوشتن بر می شمارند :
1) کاهش وزن : داشتن یادداشتی از مواد غذایی مصرفی در طول روز می تواند به افراد در کم کردن وزن کمک کند . در یکی از این تحقیقات این یادداشت مهمترین عامل کاهش وزن بود . محققان بنیاد طرح سلامت زنان معتقدند که با این یادداشت افراد از میزان مصرف کالری خود در طول روز آگاه می شوند و وقتی بدانند که در طول روز چه مقدار می خورند آنگاه آسانتر می توانند تغییرات وزنشان را کنترل کنند.
2) داشتن خواب بهتر : دانشگاه تمپل اقدام به مقایسه دو گروه زنان کرد .زنان گروه نخست بر خلاف گروه دوم در مورد تجربه های دردناک چون آزار و اذیت جنسی و یا تصادف شدید اتومبیل چیزی نوشته بودند . در گزارش آمده زنان گروه نخست سر درد ، مشکلات خواب و نشانه های کمتری نسبت به گروه دوم داشتند.
3) مبارزه با بیماری : دانشگاه بن – گورین اسراییل، در سال 2002 تحقیق انجام داد . در این پژوهش افرادی که در مورد حادثه استرس آور نوشته بودند ، مرود بررسی قرار گرفتند . این افراد طی 15 ماه مراجعه کمتری به کلینیک های درمانی داشتند.
4) کاهش استرس : دانشگاه پزشکی شیکاگــو بیماران سرطانی ، خصوصاً آنهایی که را که از طرف خانواده کمتر حمایت می شدند را مرود مطالعه قرار داد. این افراد روزانه 20 دقیقه در مورد بیماری خود می نوشتند . در این تحقیق آورده شده که این افراد در طی 6 ماه بعد از نوشتن استرس کمتری داشتند.
