Hotelurile stabilesc mai multe categorii de tarife de cameră. În general, ele corespund tipurilor de cameră (apartament, camera cu un pat, cu două paturi), care sunt comparabile, din punct de vedere al dimensiunilor şi mobilierului.
Fiecărei categorii de tarif de cameră i se atribuie, pe baza numărului de persoane care ocupă camera, un tarif standard. Acesta mai este numit şi tariful de suport sau de recepţie, deoarece este afişat la recepţie.
