Source text - English There was a disk of glowing hydrogen rotating about the center of the Galaxy, and within it a ring of molecular clouds rushing outward toward the periphery of the Milky Way. He showed her the ordered motions in the giant molecular cloud complex Sagittarius B2, which had for decades been a favorite hunting ground for complex organic molecules by her radio-astronomical colleagues on Earth. Closer to the center, they encountered another giant molecular cloud, and then Sagittarius A West...
And just adjacent, at the very center of the Galaxy, locked in a passionate gravitational embrace, was a pair of immense black holes. The mass of one of them was five million suns. Rivers of gas the size of solar systems were pouring down its maw. Two colossal, two supermassive black holes are orbiting one another at the center of the Galaxy. One had been known, or at least strongly suspected. But two? Shouldn't that have shown up as a Doppler displacement of spectral lines?
[...] Except only for a nearby supernova remnant in Cassiopeia, Cygnus A was the brightest radio source in the sides of Earth. She had calculated that in one second Cygnus A produces more energy than the Sun does in 40,000 years. The radio source was 600 million light-years away, far beyond the Milky Way, out in the realm of the galaxies. As with many extragalactic radio sources, two enormous jets of gas, fleeing apart at almost the speed of tight, were making a complex web of Rankine-Hugoniot shock fronts with the thin intergalactic gas—and producing in the process a radio beacon that shone brightly over most of the universe. All the matter in this enormous structure, 500,000 light-years across, was pouring out of a tiny, almost inconspicuous point in space exactly midway between the jets.

În interiorul lui un inel de nori moleculari gonea înspre exterior, îndreptându-se spre periferia galactică. Bărbatul îi arătă deplasările ordonate ce aveau loc în complexul gigantic de nori moleculari din constelaţia Săgetătorului, zona B 2, o constelaţie care fusese timp de decenii zona favorită de vânătoare de molecule organice complexe pentru toţi colegii ei radioastronomi de pe Pămînt. Şi chiar alături de ea, exact în inima galaxiei, înlănţuită într-o îmbrăţişare gravitaţională pătimaşă, se afla o pereche de găuri negre imense. Fiecare dintre ele avea greutatea a cinci milioane de sori. Râuri de gaz de mărimea unor sisteme stelare se scurgeau în burţile lor nesăţioase. Două găuri negre colosale, supergigantice, două găuri negre masive care se roteau una în jurul celeilalte exact în centrul galaxiei. Despre una ştiau şi ei sau cel puţin aveau bănuieli destul de serioase. Dar două? Nu s ar fi dovedit a fi de fapt un fel de deplasare de tip Doppler a liniilor spectrale? [...] Dacă făceai abstracţie de rămăşiţele unei supernove mai apropiate din Cassiopeea, Lebăda A era cea mai strălucitoare sursă radio captată pe cerul Pământului. Ea calculase că Lebăda A produce într o secundă mai multă energie decît producea Soarele în patruzeci de mii de ani. Acea radiosursă se afla la o distanţă de şase sute de milioane de ani lumină, mult dincolo de Calea Lactee, undeva în afara zonei galactice. Ca şi în cazul multor altor radiosurse extragalactice, două jeturi de gaz enorme care se deplasau separat aproape cu viteza luminii creau în pătura subţire de gaz intergalactic o reţea complexă de unde de şoc Rankine Hugoniot, producând în cadrul acestui fenomen o sursă radio asemenea unui far ce lumina cu putere aproape întregul univers. Source text - English Since the Ebstorf specimen is not only a literary and pictorial document but a map as well, the cardinal directions are clearly marked. Not, however, by the customary winds blowing their rhumb-lines onto the portolan charts, but by the body of Christ pointing the way to salvation. Placed at the top of the map, in the far east, is therefore a picture of the Saviour’s head, in the west his feet, in the south and north his left and right hands. Together these body parts serve as the mapmakers’ fix-points, overriding, but not entirely erasing, the latitudes and longitudes of ordinary geography. Most noteworthy is the fact that the orientation marks are positioned neither inside nor outside the Oikumene, but exactly in that limit of limits which is the Ocean itself. Rephrased, Christ’s head, feet and hands are all doubly bound, partly tied to the solid ground of the terra firma, partly to the unknown on the other side. The abyss between certainty and ambiguity transcended, the medieval monks torn by the same fears and desires as Pytheas and Alexander fifteen centuries before them.

Împreună, aceste părţi ale corpului slujesc drept puncte fixe ale creatorilor de hărţi şi ignoră – deşi nu anulează întru totul – latitudinile şi longitudinile din geografia clasică. Source text - English Bernard Tschumi, the architect/ theorist, in his book "Architecture and Disjunction" (1996), has proposed that all architecture embodies violence insofar as it seeks to be programmatic of human actions within and with reference to it. He uses the term violence as a “metaphor for the intensity of a relationship between individuals and their surrounding spaces” for he believes that “any relationship between a building and its users is one of violence, for any use means the intrusion of a human body into a given space, the intrusion of one order into another.” However, he claims that the violent relationship between bodies and architecture is very often ritualized into programs. The rational, structured and pragmatically driven practices of architecture constantly demand that the architect purify or at least alleviate this violence between bodies and buildings by creating conditions that would channel “obedient bodies along predictable paths and occasionally along ramps that provide striking vistas, ritualizing the transgression of bodies in space.” Such ritualization of an interaction between bodies and architecture comprises of an “organized repetition of events…announced in advance” such that they become a program, “a descriptive notice of formal series of proceedings.” For example, architecture is constantly attentive to the natural elements that affect its structural integrity and utilitarian value for human activities. Gravity is one of these elements though its structural facilitation in actual buildings is seldom readily apparent. The human body is perpetually and very often subliminally adjusting itself to the gravitational force that hugs it to the ground and the body’s upright posture seems to have developed into an effective means by which to mediate this force. The relationship between our feet and the ground is firmly rooted not only in gravity but also in etymology.
