Croatian to English: “Dubrovnik between the Balkans, Venice and Ottoman Empire, 14th-16th century”
Translation - English In the period between 14th and 16th century, in the so called “golden age”, Dubrovnik grew from a small civic municipality to become a free republic and took up an important place in Mediterranean and Balkans trade. The Republic rounded up its borders to their final span, experienced economic growth, reached its demographic peak. From a town with a very small state owned land Ragusa became a republic with considerable territory, ranging from Pelješac to Prevlaka. This growth was accompanied by a high standard of living and cultural flourishing of the city. The city was a big construction site: fortifying walls were being built, Duke’s palace, palaces, waterworks and other public and private buildings. Many important state institutions were founded. That period was also marked by a powerful growth of shipping and maritime affairs.
All of this took place in a very turbulent period during which a lot had changed in Ragusa’s immediate and wider surroundings. Life reached a quicker pace on the Mediterranean, and besides Venice, Genoa, Marseille and Catalan ports, there were new competitors, countries of the European west. The advances of the Ottomans changed a hundred year old situation in the Balkans and created an entirely new world. At the time when the rest of Croatian territory was decreasing under the advances of the Ottoman Empire, Ragusa was a symbol of safety and a true sanctuary. The city enjoyed the protection of Hungarian king and trade privileges in the Balkans, Italy, Kingdom of Aragon, Byzantium, Levant and on the Hapsburg territory.
