Admiré de niño la clarividencia del caballo para orientarse en la ida o el regreso y, sea de noche o de día, en la tormenta o bajo el vendaval, admiré el olfato de los perros para volver al sitio del que parten por más que de él se alejen, o el acierto infalible del gato para encontrar el rumbo que tras sus andanzas lo devuelve siempre a su casa. Yo no lo tengo ni cuento tampoco con ese invalorable sentido común a la mayoría de los humanos para orientarse en las calles y las rutas o en parajes nunca vistos tanto como en aquellos en donde apenas se estuvo una única vez. Yo me pierdo irremediablemente cuando me alejo de los circuitos habituales. Privado del don de la ubicación, incapaz de abstraer, de discernir y calcular donde tanta falta hace, los sitios que no frecuento son para mí inalcanzables y a ellos jamás llegaría si alguien no me condujese o no me dejara guiar por los que entienden. Sujeto fatalmente a mi pobre percepción, no sé ir, no sé volver y soy incapaz de remontar mi invalidez. No puedo, no aprendo, no entiendo y nada me dice un plano acerca de mi ubicación. No tengo brújula interna ni don alguno de representación y en cuanto a los puntos cardinales jamás supe dónde están. Todo esto, claro, favorece mi propensión a la inmovilidad. Para no exponerme a vivir perdido, trato de no alejarme de los escenarios familiares. Poco me convoca fuera de mi barrio y trato en lo posible de que mi vida social nunca lo exceda. Nada más ajeno a mí que el espíritu de un expedicionario. Invierto las direcciones y suelo situar a la izquierda lo que estuvo desde siempre a la derecha, y cuando lejos de mi casa dejo el coche estacionado, lo busco al querer volver por el lado en que no está y pierdo así un tiempo enorme resolviendo lo que nunca debió convertirse en problema.

Από μικρό παιδί θαύμαζα το ένστικτο που οδηγεί τα άλογα να βρίσκουν το δρόμο τους στον πηγαιμό ή την επιστροφή, τη μέρα ή τη νύχτα, μέσα στην καταιγίδα ή τη θύελλα· θαύμαζα την όσφρηση των σκύλων που γυρνούν στο μέρος από το οποίο έχουν φύγει όσο μακριά κι αν έχουν πάει, ή την αλάνθαστη διαίσθηση της γάτας που της επιτρέπει να βρίσκει πάντα το δρόμο για το σπίτι της μετά από κάθε της περιπέτεια. Εγώ την δεν έχω, ούτε μπορώ να βασιστώ σ' αυτή την ανεκτίμητη αίσθηση που είναι κοινή για όλους τους ανθρώπους και τους καθοδηγεί σε δρόμους και διαδρομές ή σε τόπους που είτε δεν έχουν ξαναδεί είτε έχουν πάει μία και μοναδική φορά. Όταν απομακρύνομαι από τις γνωστές περιοχές, είναι σίγουρο ότι θα χαθώ. Στερούμενος της αίσθησης του χώρου, μη μπορώντας να αφαιρέσω, να διακρίνω και να υπολογίσω εκεί που τόσο είναι απαραίτητο, τα μέρη όπου δεν συχνάζω είναι για μένα απρόσιτα και δεν θα μπορέσω ποτέ να φτάσω σ' αυτά χωρίς την καθοδήγηση ή τη συνοδεία κάποιου που να έχει γνώσεις προσανατολισμού. Μοιραία υποταγμένος στη φτωχή μου αντίληψη, δεν ξέρω πώς θα πάω, πώς θα γυρίσω και δεν μπορώ να ξεπεράσω την αδεξιότητά μου. Δεν μπορώ, δεν μαθαίνω, δεν καταλαβαίνω κι ένας χάρτης δεν μου λέει τίποτα για το πού βρίσκομαι. Δεν έχω εσωτερική πυξίδα ούτε ικανότητα για αναπαράσταση του χώρου· όσο για τα σημεία του ορίζοντα, ποτέ δεν ήξερα πού είναι. Όλα αυτά, σίγουρα ευνοούν την τάση μου προς την ακινησία. Για να μην διακινδυνέψω να ζήσω χαμένος, προσπαθώ να μην απομακρύνομαι από τα οικεία μέρη. Λίγες είναι οι φορές που με καλούν σε άλλη περιοχή και προσπαθώ να μην επεκτείνω ποτέ την κοινωνική μου ζωή εκτός των ορίων της δικής μου. Τίποτα δεν είναι πιο ξένο προς εμένα από το εξερευνητικό πνεύμα. Αντιστρέφω τις κατευθύνσεις και τοποθετώ στα αριστερά τα πράγματα που βρίσκονταν πάντα δεξιά κι όταν παρκάρω το αυτοκίνητο μακριά από το σπίτι μου, γυρνώντας για να το πάρω, το ψάχνω από τη μεριά που δεν είναι κι έτσι χάνω πάρα πολύ χρόνο προσπαθώντας να λύσω αυτό που δεν θα έπρεπε ποτέ να εξελιχθεί σε πρόβλημα.

All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Όλα τα ταξίδια δεν είναι σήμερα παρά ένας τρόπος μετακίνησης της φωτογραφικής μηχανής από μέρος σε μέρος· όλοι οι ταξιδιώτες κυριαρχούνται από τον παντοδύναμο φακό. Οι επισκέπτες της παλιάς σχολής που αρκούνται στο να στέκονται και να κοιτάζουν με τα αναχρονιστικά μάτια τους, παραμερίζονται από τους φωτογράφους, που θεωρούν δεδομένο ότι όταν επιδίδονται στην τελετουργία της εστίασης, τίποτα άλλο δεν πρέπει να κινείται ή να περνάει από το οπτικό τους πεδίο. Εκείνες οι παράξενες ψυχές που δεν έχουν φωτογραφική μηχανή πρέπει να παραχωρούν τη θέση τους σ' αυτούς που έχουν μια πιο σοβαρή απασχόληση, να στέκονται στην άκρη καθώς διεξάγεται η τελετουργία και να περιμένουν τη σειρά τους ενώ ορδές πούλμαν σταματούν και εξαπολύουν το Θεό της Instamatic στο τοπίο. Και οι κάτοικοι ολόκληρων χωρών, θεωρώντας τους εαυτούς τους θύματα κανιβαλισμού, βλέποντας να καταπίνονται και να απορροφώνται από ένα μάτι με μαύρο κύκλο που τους κοιτάζει αδιάκοπα, αρπάζουν ότι θέλουν από τους κανιβάλους. Θέλετε να φωτογραφίσετε το σπίτι μου; Πληρώστε.
Ίσως να μην πείραζαν όλα αυτά αν καταφέρναμε να κάνουμε κάτι που ν' άξιζε τον κόπο. Αν όλη αυτή η συνεχής απασχόληση και τα κλικ της μηχανής μας έδιναν στο τέλος κάτι που δεν υπήρχε πιο πριν, όπως εικόνες ομορφιάς που αποθανατίστηκε ή αλήθειες που ειπώθηκαν. Αλλά δυστυχώς δεν είναι έτσι. Η φωτογραφία είναι απλά ένα είδος ευυπόληπτου γκράφιτι.
Η φωτογραφική μηχανή είναι το μέσο με το οποίο αποτυπώνουμε τους εαυτούς μας σε ό,τι βλέπουμε, μια μυστική καταχώρηση των Θαυμάτων του κόσμου που έχουν ήδη αποθανατιστεί θαυμάσια από επαγγελματίες και που βρίσκονται σε κάθε βιβλιοπωλείο ή πρακτορείο τύπου. Αλλά τι νόημα θα είχε να δείξουμε στη θεία Μωντ, όταν γυρίσουμε πίσω στον τόπο μας, τις καρτ-ποστάλ με το τοπίο της Τοσκάνης, αν δεν φαινόμαστε στη φωτογραφία για να αποδείξουμε ότι ήμασταν εκεί;
Καμία βραχώδης έκταση δεν είναι αληθοφανής αν δεν είμαι κι εγώ εκεί. Κανένα μνημείο δεν είναι υπαρκτό αν η σύζυγός μου δεν έχει ακουμπήσει επάνω του. Κανένας ναός δεν έχει ενδιαφέρον χωρίς το χαμογελαστό πρόσωπό μου να ποζάρει δίπλα του. Με τη φωτογραφική μου μηχανή κάνω δική μου την κάθε ομορφιά, την κατέχω, τη συρρικνώνω, την εξημερώνω και την αναπαράγω στον άσπρο τοίχο του καθιστικού μου για να αποδείξω σ' ένα επιλεγμένο κοινό φίλων και οικογένειας το μοναδικό και απόλυτα σημαντικό γεγονός που σχετίζεται μ' αυτές τις ομορφιές: Τις είδα, ήμουν εκεί, τις φωτογράφισα, και είναι έργα μου.
