Rosetta Picks Asteroid Targets
Summary (Mar 13, 2004): The twelve-year Rosetta mission will culminate in landing on a comet. During its journey, close approaches to two asteroids will provide insight into questions of how the primitive solar system formed. Mission scientists announced this week that their fuel budget will allow flybys of the asteroids called Steins and Lutetia which orbit between Mars and Jupiter.

Earlier this month, Europe's Rosetta cometary probe was successfully launched into an orbit around the Sun, which will allow it to reach the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014 after three flybys of the Earth and one of Mars. During this 10-year journey, the probe will pass close to two asteroids.
The Rosetta Science Working Team has made the final selection of the asteroids that Rosetta will observe at close quarters during its journey to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Steins and Lutetia lie in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
Rosetta's scientific goals always included the possibility of studying one or more asteroids from close range. However, only after Rosetta's launch and its insertion into interplanetary orbit could the ESA mission managers assess how much fuel was actually available for fly-bys. Information from the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Germany enabled Rosetta's Science Working Team to select a pair of asteroids of high scientific interest, well within the fuel budget.
The selection of these two excellent targets was made possible by the high accuracy with which the Ariane 5 delivered the spacecraft into its orbit. This of course leaves sufficient fuel for the core part of the mission, orbiting Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko for 17 months when Rosetta reaches its target in 2014. The comet will then still be far from the Sun and its nucleus should be dormant.
Study of its orbit shows that it was captured quite recently, after too close encounters with Jupiter in 1840 and 1959. The comet is now revolving around the Sun every 6.6 years on an elliptical orbit with a low inclination compared to that of the Earth. Being a relatively 'fresh' comet in the inner Solar System, 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is a promising target for the study of primitive Solar System material.
The first planetary encounter will be in March 2005, as Rosetta flies by the Earth for the first time. The gravity assist will boost Rosetta into an orbit that will take it to Mars two years later.
Asteroids are primitive building blocks of the Solar System, left over from the time of its formation about 4600 million years ago. Only a few asteroids have so far been observed from nearby. They are very different in shape and size, ranging from a few kilometers to over 100 kilometers across, and in their composition.

On Valentine's Day, 2001, the Near-Shoemaker spacecraft successfully landed on the asteroid, Eros. Its remarkable journey--to soft-land on a peanut shaped asteroid - about 176 million kilometers (109 million miles) from Earth, prompted Andrew Cheng, NEAR Project Scientist, to note: "On Monday, 12 February 2001, the NEAR spacecraft touched down on asteroid Eros, after transmitting 69 close-up images of the surface during its final descent. Las anteriors missions que han volat prop d'un cometa varen ser: la missió ICE de la NASA l'any 1985, les dues naus Vega russes i les dues naus japoneses Suisei i Sakigake que formaven part de l'armada que va visitar el Cometa Halley l'any 1986; la nau de la NASA Deep Spàce 1 va passar prop del Cometa Borelly l'any 2001 i la nau Stardust de la NASA, que va passar prop del Cometa Wild 2 a primers de gener i ha capturat mostres de la cua del cometa que tornarà l'any 2006. Desgraciadament la nau Contour de la NASA, llençada l'estiu del 2002, va fracassar en el seu intent d'inserció en la seva trajectòria interplanetària. Aquest mateix any es produirà també el llançament del Deep Impact, una nau que llençarà un bloc massís de coure dintre del nucli d'un cometa.
El dia de Sant Valentí del 2001, la nau espacial Near-Shoemaker es va posar amb èxit sobre l'asteroide Eros. El seu extraordinari viatge i suau aterratge sobre un asteroide en forma de cacauet a uns 176 milions de quilòmetres de la Terra (109 milions de milles) va incitar Andrew Cheng, científic del Projecte NEAR, a declarar: "Dilluns 12 de febrer del 2001, la nau espacial NEAR s'ha posat sobre l'asteroide Eros després de transmetre 69 imatges detallades de la superfície durant el descens final. Observar aquest esdeveniment ha estat l'experiència més emocionant de la meva vida."
"Els cometes i els asteroides són les rajoles de la nostra Terra i dels altres planetes del Sistema Solar. 'Rosetta' realitzarà l'anàlisi més acurada feta fins ara en tres d'aquests objectes," va dir el professor David Southwood, director del Programa Científic de l'ESA. "'Rosetta' s'enfrontarà a molts reptes durant el seu viatge de 12 anys, però la informació científica que obtindrem sobre l'origen del Sistema Solar i, possiblement, de la vida, són paga més que suficient."

After over 35 years of working for several multi-national companies such as Sony, Sunbeam... always in the Import/Export departments, and having translated thousands of texts (whether commercial texts, or legal texts, or user manuals texts) I am now planning to retire in the next upcoming months. However I do not wish to be left without any work to do, and would also like to earn some extra money so I may travel a bit. I learned French before I was six years old, written and spoken, and then as a teenager I learned English and have been using both languages, besides my native languages Catalan and Spanish, through my whole professional life.
