Lorsqu'on sent l'éveil tout proche, mais qu'on n'est pas “dedans”, on a envie d'y “entrer”. Et c'est justement cette envie qui nous maintient “au-dehors”, car elle souligne notre frontière avec ce Tout dans lequel on aimerait s’immerger. En fait, il faut ne pas vouloir y entrer. Il ne suffit pas de ne pas vouloir y entrer: il faut ne pas vouloir y entrer. La passivité ne mène à rien. Il faut être actif, mais une activité entièrement occupée par l’attente — plus encore, entièrement satisfaite par l’attente. Bien souvent, on sent monter en soi une vague dont on pense qu’elle pourrait nous propulser au-delà de soi. Et on se met en tâche de la renforcer. C’est là qu’on gâche tout. Comme si elle avait besoin de notre aide. Quelle arrogance. Et pourtant, elle a besoin de nous. De notre présence. Elle a besoin qu’on soit là, qu’on se tienne face à elle, qu’on croie suffisamment en soi et qu’on s’aime assez pour rester ainsi tout nu face à elle, sans rien lui apporter, que notre seule présence. Tout est là. On est encore face à “rien”, et à ce moment-là, ce qui est, au sens fort, c'est notre attente. Non pas son but, mais l’attente elle-même. Tout le reste, ce sont des projections du désir. De l’évanescent. Mais l’attente, elle, est réelle. I remember reading once that some fellows use language to conceal thought, but it's been my experience that a good many more use it instead of thought.
A businessman's conversation should be regulated by fewer and simpler rules than any other function of the human animal. They are:
Have something to say.
Say it.
Stop talking.
Beginning before you know what you want to say and keeping on after you have said it lands a merchant in a lawsuit or the poorhouse, and the first is a short cut to the second. I maintain a legal department here, and it costs a lot of money, but it's to keep me from going to law.
It's all right when you are calling on a girl or talking with friends after dinner to run a conversation like a Sunday-school excursion, with stops to pick flowers; but in the office your sentences should be the shortest distance possible between periods. Cut out the introduction and the peroration, and stop before you get to secondly. You've got to preach short sermons to catch sinners; and deacons won't believe they need long ones themselves. Give fools the first and women the last word. The meat's always in the middle of the sandwich. Of course, a light butter on either side of it doesn't do any harm if it's intended for a man who likes butter.
Remember, too, that it's easier to look wise than to talk wisdom. Say less than the other fellow and listen more than you talk; for when a man's listening he isn't telling on himself and he's flattering the fellow who is. Give most men a good listener and most women enough note-paper and they'll tell all they know. Money talks -- but not unless its owner has a loose tongue, and then its remarks are always offensive. Lembro-me de ter lido algures que há quem use a fala para camuflar o pensamento, mas estou certo de que muitos mais a usam em vez dele.
A fala de um homem de negócios deve obedecer a regras mais simples e em menor número do que qualquer outra função do animal humano. Elas são:
Ter algo a dizer.
Dizê-lo.
Parar de falar.
Começar antes de saber o que se quer dizer e prosseguir depois de o ter dito, precipita o mercador no tribunal ou no asilo, e o primeiro serve de atalho ao segundo. Possuo aqui um departamento jurídico, e custa-me muito dinheiro, mas evita-me os processos.
Quando se quer impressionar uma jovem ou falar com amigos depois do jantar, pode-se orientar uma conversa como uma excursão escolar de Domingo, com paragens para apanhar flores; mas no escritório as frases devem percorrer a menor distância possível entre períodos. Reduza a introdução e a conclusão ao mínimo e finde antes de chegar a ”em segundo lugar”. É com sermões breves que se apanham pecadores e os próprios pregadores não confiam nos extensos. Reserve aos loucos a primeira palavra e às mulheres a última. O lugar do fiambre é sempre no meio da sanduíche. Embora, evidentemente, barrar de manteiga os dois lados do pão não faça mal a ninguém, na condição, porém, de se gostar de manteiga.
Lembre-se ainda que é mais fácil passar por entendido do que ser entendido. Fale menos do que o outro e escute mais do que fala; porque quando um homem ouve não se denuncia e lisonjeia quem fala. Dando à maioria dos homens um bom auditor e à maioria das mulheres papel de carta suficiente, dirão tudo o que sabem. O dinheiro fala a muita gente - mas apenas se o seu proprietário tiver a língua solta, e as suas observações forem sempre prejudiciais.
