Source text - Spanish “EL CORAZÓN DE LA MONTAÑA” TRATAMIENTO Una impresionante tormenta de arena azota el desierto sin descanso. De entre la ventisca se ve la silueta de un hombre que cabalga sobre un caballo como buenamente puede. Poco a poco ese hombre se acerca y se empieza a poder distinguir sus rasgos. Es Amir, tío de la pequeña Azahar. Tras él, se adivina a lo lejos un numeroso grupo de unos cien jinetes que le siguen sin descanso. De pronto se oye la voz de Azahar, que sigue narrando lo que le está sucediendo a Amir en el desierto. Bajo las estrellas, en los jardines de la alcazaba árabe de Antaqira, al pie de una montaña en el Reino Andalusí, Azahar está dando de comer a un pequeño lince, al que llama Alfajor, mientras le sigue contando las aventuras de su tío Amir. Se la ve emocionada. El lince escucha atentamente hasta que algo le distrae. Mira hacia lo que le ha distraído y corriendo se esconde entre las piernas de Azahar. En ese momento se oye la voz de Amir comentando que no fue para tanto y que no eran cien, sino tres o cuatro sus perseguidores. Azahar mira a su espalda y se encuentra con el propio Amir, que trae leña para hacer un fuego. Azahar se entusiasma con la visita ya que aprovecha para repetirle mil veces que quiere ir con él a recorrer más aventuras. Amir dice que es muy joven todavía para eso. Ella, un poco molesta, le replica que de eso nada, que hoy se ha ido a la aventura y se ha encontrado con ese lince, y que le ha llamado como el dulce que tanto le gusta. Amir ríe mientras, ante el asombro de la niña, hace fuego con un poco de pólvora. Amir asegura que eso de buscar aventuras está bien, y que éstas, en realidad, se encuentran en cualquier lugar. Por ejemplo, continúa Amir, en esas montañas. Y señala la montaña que se alza ante ellos y que tiene rostro humano. Amir comenta que hasta las montañas, por extraño que parezca, también son seres vivos y que se mueven tan lentamente que apenas lo percibimos. Azahar mira incrédula a su tío, pero éste comienza a contarle que hace miles de años, dos montañas que estaban juntas se profesaban un profundo amor... De la imagen de la sobrina y el tío se pasa a la imagen del interior de las dos montañas en donde ríos de lava circulan por el interior de forma fluida, como si fueran venas. El tío continúa relatando la leyenda a medida que se va viendo las imágenes de lo que le dice a su sobrina: en sus interiores la lava fluía sin parar, impulsada por sus respectivos corazones, mientras que en sus laderas crecían las más bellas flores y vivían los más hermosos animales. Un río las unía y surcaba entrelazándolas. Pero los dioses que moran en las estrellas - continúa diciendo Amir - estaban celosos del amor que sentían ambas rocas y de que en sus laderas pudiesen crecer flores más hermosas que las que poblaban los jardines de los templos, así que decidieron separar ambas montañas, e hicieron crecer el río que las unía, aumentando el caudal ganando terreno a la tierra y logrando marchitar las flores y consiguiendo que los animales abandonaran el lugar. El río terminó convirtiéndose en un mar. Ese mar que los separó –prosigue Amir mientras continúan las imágenes- hoy lo conocemos como mar Mediterráneo, el mar entre tierras. Una de las montañas, llena de desesperación, alzó su rostro y gritó a las estrellas por su amor. Pero los antiguos dioses no solo no escucharon su súplica, sino que la hicieron estallar en mil pedazos. Es en ese momento una llama, con la silueta del rostro de la montaña, se alza hasta solaparse con la montaña que tienen frente a ellos Amir y Azahar. Azahar está boquiabierta por el relato que está escuchando. Amir termina diciéndole que desde entonces, tanto los ambiciosos como los románticos de estas tierras que creen en la leyenda, y que no son pocos, tratan de encontrar el corazón de esa montaña, ya que al enfriarse éste se convirtió en un precioso diamante. Unos lo buscan por su valor y poder que ofrece a quien lo posea, y los otros para devolverlo a su lugar e intentar resurgir así la montaña. ¿Tú qué harías?, le pregunta Amir a su sobrina. Azahar mira la montaña con pena y en silencio. La habitación de Azahar está oscura. Por las paredes y el suelo hay muchos objetos extraños de distintos países muy lejanos. Entra Farida, la madre de Azahar, en la habitación y tropieza con uno de los objetos. Despierta a su hija y le regaña para que recoja todo inmediatamente. Azahar protesta porque son los regalos que le ha ido trayendo su tío en cada uno de sus viajes. De pronto se oyen unos cascos de caballo, y la voz de Amir calmando al caballo. También se oye la voz de Hamet, padre de Azahar y Valí de Antaqira, que le dice a su hermano que no haga locuras y que no se vaya, que las relaciones con los cristianos no son muy buenas y que le puede pasar algo. Azahar corre a la ventana y la abre. Ve a su tío terminar de cargar unos bultos en una de las monturas mientras le dice a su hermano que no debe de preocuparse, nada le pasará. El padre de Azahar sí que está preocupado porque él no deja de fantasear y de buscar problemas en cada uno de sus viajes. Azahar, desde la ventana, va a preguntarle a su tío algo, pero éste le niega con la cabeza antes de que ella diga nada. La niña se queda triste y protesta por no poder acompañarle. Amir, al ver la cara de tristeza de su sobrina, saca de una taleguilla dos pequeñas piedras preciosas que se encajan entre si perfectamente y, sonriéndole, se las lanza guiñándole un ojo. Mientras que la pequeña las observa, Amir monta en su caballo para marchar. Azahar se despide de él con una gran sonrisa y deseándole suerte. El sol que ilumina a Azahar nos traslada a Toledo, en donde un jovencito, Jaime, se enfrenta a un amigo, Luis, en una divertida pelea de espadas de madera por las calles de la ciudad, alarmando a los mercaderes y viandantes. El motivo de la lucha; la defensa del trono de su pequeña prima Elena, la cual sentada sobre un carro de heno se divierte viéndolos combatir. Desde otro carromato, partido de risa, está un guardia grandullón disfrutando de la pelea de los críos. Por la ventana se ve dentro de la torre a un grupo de personas hablar alrededor de una mesa con un mapa. Ese grupo de personas es el tío de Jaime, Gustavo, Conde de Fuenterroble, que está reunido con sus consejeros y hombres de confianza ante un mapa en el que se muestra el reinado de Castilla y Aragón, tras la renuncia al trono de Castilla de Alfonso V de Portugal y la proclamación de Isabel I como reina de Castilla, y la frontera que los separa de las tierras del reino nazarí de Granada. Mientras se sigue oyendo el ruido de la lucha de los niños afuera, Gustavo comenta a sus hombres que espera que los Reyes, en recompensa a la ayuda que ha prestado durante la contienda contra los partidarios de Alfonso V, le premien con un largo descanso para los suyos y nuevas posesiones. Méndez, un alto y corpulento caballero, y capitán de las fuerzas del Conde, recomienda a su señor que lo que debe hacer es regresar a la frontera del reino nazarí de Granada y combatir contra los musulmanes para conseguir de los Reyes en recompensa nuevos territorios, pero el Conde, mucho más prudente, prefiere no tener que entrar en nuevas contiendas y aguardar las ordenes. Jaime sigue luchando “encarnizadamente” contra su amigo Luis, cuando advierte algo extraño en un hombre al que la guardia deja entrar inadvertidamente en la ciudad, bajo su capa de camuflaje se ve que calza babuchas árabes. Jaime se quita de en medio a duras penas a Luis dejándolo sentado en el suelo con una red por la cabeza con alguna que otra verdura, y empieza a perseguir por las calles al supuesto espía árabe, provocando aún más el caos, sobre todo cuando Jaime se sube en su caballo, Gallardo, que aunque se muestra hermoso y dispuesto, haciendo honor a su nombre, en realidad es bastante temeroso y asustadizo. El ruido que provoca Jaime fuera es insoportable en el interior de la torre. El Conde pide a Méndez que haga algo. Méndez, frustrado porque el Conde no ha seguido sus consejos, se asoma a la ventana y le grita al guardia grandullón y patoso, que seguía pasándoselo de miedo viendo el estropicio de Jaime. Méndez le ordena que vaya a detener la pelea sea como sea. El grandullón corre tras Jaime sin perder un instante. Mientras, en la persecución de Jaime, el vértigo que sufre su caballo es total, y eso hace que todo sea mucho más ruidoso, ya que el joven no se da por vencido y obliga a Gallardo a subir a las almenas para perseguir desde allí, y por los tejados de la ciudad, al extraño hombre, provocando un gran caos. Cuando Jaime tiene casi acorralado al árabe, el joven puede ver un poco de su cara; resulta que es Amir. Jaime ve que le sonríe con cierta simpatía el espía y eso le desconcierta. Más aun cuando le guiña un ojo en señal de complicidad. De repente aparece el grandullón de Méndez que, obediente cien por cien, agarra a Jaime para que se esté quieto, provocando así que el espía se escape. Al final, en una maniobra magistral y muy ágil Jaime, se quita de encima al torpe guardia y logra dar la voz de alarma a un grupo de soldados para que capturen al árabe. Salen tras él pero al segundo ya es demasiado tarde, y el árabe ha desaparecido como por arte de magia. En el patio de armas Jaime cuenta a su tío, el Conde y a su esposa, Mercedes, que se dio cuenta por las babuchas y que si se le ha escapado ha sido por culpa del guardia de Méndez. Méndez, muy enfadado con el crío, intenta echar balones fuera. El Conde, que en un principio escucha con cara severa, por el escándalo montado, poco a poco va sonriendo y llega ha admitir la admiración y el orgullo que siente por su sobrino. Eso es algo que Méndez no puede oír de pura envidia, aunque nada dice. El conde, una vez todo aclarado, deja que el chico vuelva a jugar con su amigo Luis. Mientras el chico juega el Conde le confiesa a su mujer la alegría que le da haber acogido a Jaime tras la muerte de sus padres. Ambos coinciden en su cariño hacia el niño. Amir, como si de una sombra se tratara, está junto a una estantería repleta de libros de la cual coge uno y lo mete bajo su ropaje. Jaime y su amigo Luis siguen emulando a los soldados en las artes de la guerra con sus espadas de madera. En cada prueba y obstáculo del patio que el joven Jaime recorre le vemos crecer y cambiar su espada de madera por una de reluciente acero, convirtiéndose en un apuesto muchacho. Ya hecho un muchacho, vence la pelea que ha estado manteniendo con su amigo Luis, también convertido ya en un apuesto joven. Ambos se van a refrescar cuando pasan bajo el balcón en el que está asomada la joven y preciosa Elena. Luis se queda embobado mirándola. Jaime se ríe de Luis por la manera de bobalicón con que mira a su prima, pues ve absurdo enamorarse. De pronto irrumpe en la ciudad un mensajero de los Reyes Católicos llamando la atención de todos los ciudadanos. El mensajero descabalga sin perder un instante y entra corriendo en la torre ante la mirada atenta de Jaime y Luis. En una de las salas, el mensajero lee la misiva de los Reyes a Gustavo y Mercedes, por la que requieren al Conde y sus tropas en territorios cercanos a la frontera árabe. Esta noticia produce una gran alegría a todos los presentes en la sala, especialmente a Méndez, aunque no tanto a Mercedes y su hija Elena, ya que saben que ello va a suponer la marcha de sus seres queridos. Un criado sale de la torre y corre la voz de que van a partir hacia la frontera. La noticia llega oídos de Jaime que corre al interior de la torre. Una vez llega a la sala, duda si hablar con el Conde, pero es éste quien se adelanta a sus deseos y le comunica que quiere que le acompañe en su viaje junto con Luis. Jaime se emociona con las aventuras que él y su amigo van a poder vivir. Jaime corre alegre hacia su amigo para comentarle la noticia, esperando que también éste se va a alegrar. Luis, por el contrario, confiesa que no está nada contento pues no le hace ninguna gracia separarse de Elena. Jaime no lo entiende, ya que para él lo realmente importante es luchar contra los árabes, que es para lo que se han estado preparando desde niños. Una columna de hombres a caballo y algunos carruajes, encabezada por Méndez, está preparada para salir de la ciudad. El Conde se despide de su esposa. Próximos a ellos los dos jóvenes hacen lo mismo con Elena. Jaime ve que sobra en la despedida y deja a solas a Luis y a Elena. Jaime y Luis, uno emocionado, el otro no tanto, entran en la columna justo tras el Conde, pero delante de Méndez, algo que al capitán no le hace ninguna gracia. El guardia grandullón va a decir algo al respecto, pero Méndez le hace callar de malos modos. Los tambores de las tropas acompañan a la despedida y la caravana sale de las murallas de la ciudad. La caravana atraviesa diferentes paisajes: cruzan viejas ciudades con iglesias románicas, atraviesan ríos, caminan bajo el vuelo de pájaros rosados, a los que el Conde identifica como “flamencos”, pasan la noche junto a ciénagas llena de mosquitos,... hasta que al final llegan a su destino, una ciudadela con una fortaleza árabe rodeada de toldos y tiendas de gente que duerme en las afueras de la muralla. En el interior casi todos los edificios tienen albañiles trabajando sobre ellos, con andamios de madera por doquier y sistemas de poleas a modo de grúas colgando por todas partes, arreglando los destrozos de una no muy lejana batalla. La fisonomía de la ciudad está en un proceso intermedio para dejar de ser árabe y asemejarse más a una cristiana, así, por ejemplo, sobre el minarete se construye un campanario. Precisamente, en el momento en el que se acerca la caravana, unos obreros levantan una cruz sobre la torre de la antigua mezquita de la fortaleza. A la entrada les recibe Ramírez, el capitán de las tropas allí destinadas, que pone su mando a las órdenes del Conde. En honor a su llegada, ha dispuesto para esa misma noche una gran fiesta. El Conde se interesa por las numerosas tiendas que ha podido ver rodeando la ciudad. Ramírez le cuenta que son moriscos, árabes que han renegado de su fe y que desean vivir en paz con los cristianos e integrarse con ellos. Aún no disponen de sitio para ellos en el interior de la fortaleza. Desde la sala donde se celebra la fiesta y a través de las ventanas, pueden verse las cercanas montañas silueteadas por la luz de la luna. Salen Jaime y Luis a ver los alrededores del campamento con curiosidad y miedo. Tras los árboles sale una sombra que le pone de pronto un cuchillo a Jaime en el cuello. Es Méndez. Después del susto inicial de los chicos, Méndez les explica que deben de estar alerta porque no se pueden fiar de ningún moro, y que estos están muy cerca. En su habitación Azahar, ella, ya una hermosa joven, anda rebuscando prendas en un gran baúl. Tras coger algunos velos se dirige a la ventana donde hay un jocoso flamenco a medio disfrazar por ella. Candil, como llama al flamenco por la luz que desprende su blanco plumaje, se siente ridículo con aquellos trapos. Como salvado por la campana recibe la llegada de la madre de Azahar, aprovechando para liberarse de ellos. Farida, al ver el flamenco, intenta ahuyentarlo quejándose a su hija de las compañías tan raras que escoge, Azahar ríe argumentándole que Candil es su blanco príncipe. La madre al observar la habitación y como si se lo hubiera repetido mil veces, le hace ver como de desordenada la tiene. Azahar se excusa explicándole que no es así, que las tiene distribuidas y colocadas según su procedencia, mientras que le empieza a mostrar y relatar de donde es cada una de ellas. La madre, paciente, se sienta sobre la cama mientras ve como su hija ensueña con mil aventuras en voz alta con cada uno de los objetos. Azahar termina abrazando a su madre y sentada junto a ella. Azahar le confiesa que se siente como pájaro en una jaula y que lo que realmente quiere es viajar y conocer esos sitios de los que tanto ha oído hablar a su tío. La madre pese a ser condesciente le argumenta que su sitio está allí. A la mañana siguiente salen en columna a inspeccionar parte de la tropa con el Conde, Jaime, Méndez y otros. Después de una parada en la que ven pasar unas patrullas árabes, deciden reanudar pero Jaime se fija en unos flamencos que sobrevuelan una zona determinada. Le dice a su amigo que quiere ir a verlos y que le cubra. Luis intenta impedirlo pero Jaime no le hace ni caso y se va. Se acerca hasta donde están los animales y descubre la laguna Fuente de Piedra, muy cerca de la montaña. Lleno de curiosidad se acerca con sigilo, mirando a todas partes. Ante la mirada de uno de los flamencos, Jaime llega muy sigiloso a la laguna. Ve a una yegua árabe, Azofaifa, atada en un árbol próximo. Gallardo, el caballo de Jaime, le ha gustado la yegua y relincha para llamar su atención, pero esta no le hace caso. En esos instantes Jaime ve unos juncos moverse y, callando a su caballo, desmonta. Muy alerta saca la espada y se aproxima con cuidado, muy atento, mirando de reojo en todas las direcciones. Todo está en silencio. Cuando parece que va a descubrir algo entre los juncos, oye un ruido justo detrás de él; es el aleteo de Candil, que lo hace para divertirse y asustar a Jaime. Efectivamente, el joven se asusta y nervioso se da la vuelta de inmediato gritando para intentar intimidar al animal. Pero lo hace con tan mala fortuna que resbala por una pequeña cuesta hasta golpearse con una piedra y quedar sin sentido. De entre los juncos termina saliendo Alfajor, ya mayor, el lince que “adoptó” Azahar años atrás. El lince le reprocha con la mirada al flamenco el haberse pasado con el chaval. Al abrir los ojos lo primero que ve, con aturdimiento, es la cara de Azahar. Jaime no puede ocultar su admiración por la belleza de la chica. Azahar le pregunta si es habitual en él pegar gritos al ver un flamenco. Jaime está todavía bastante dolorido como para contestar. Azahar, sin decir más, se da media vuelta y se aleja. Jaime consigue ponerse bien, gracias al flamenco que le da aire con las alas. Una vez recuperado, busca a la chica pero no la encuentra. Entonces ve cómo el flamenco sale volando. Le sigue con la mirada y ve que llega hasta donde está ella. Azahar está en ese momento escalando la montaña con cierta premura. Jaime decide seguirla sin perder un minuto. A duras penas Jaime consigue alcanzarla. Mientras ambos andan por la montaña, él quiere saber su nombre a toda costa; se pone hasta pesado. Pero Azahar le ignora. En un momento ella, enfrentándose a él, le impide que le siga. Jaime se queda cortado. Ella sigue su camino. Jaime no sabe qué hacer pero de inmediato decide ir de nuevo tras ella. Cuando otra vez la va a alcanzar, ve que ella se mete por dentro de la montaña a través de una gruta que apenas se ve desde el exterior. Jaime va tras ella. Azahar se da cuenta de que le sigue y eso le pone más nerviosa. Él intenta sacar más conversación, sin éxito. Sin poder contenerse, Azahar le manda a paseo. Jaime, desconcertado, va a irse cuando Azahar, de pronto, le exige que se quede. A Jaime eso le gusta, hasta que se da cuenta que Azahar ha cambiado de opinión para que le ayude a mover una enorme piedra que le dificulta el camino. Jaime antes quiere saber su nombre. Azahar por no oírle y para que le ayude, se lo dice. Entonces Jaime mueve la piedra satisfecho por haber conseguido saber su nombre. El camino que hay delante de ellos se descubre como un lugar frió y siniestro. Jaime le pregunta que pretende hacer. Azahar le explica que intenta mantener libre el camino que llega a las entrañas de la montaña, “¿sabes que las montañas también son seres vivos...”. Eso es suficiente para que Jaime comience a reír. Azahar muy ofendida sale al exterior y se va sin mediar palabra dejando atrás a Jaime. El joven, entre bromas, sigue a Azahar a larga distancia hasta que ve cómo entra por las murallas de la Alcazaba. Jaime llega al campamento. Sin esperar un segundo le empieza a contar a Luis que ha conocido a una mora de gran hermosura, que se llama Azahar y que, casi literalmente, tiene muchos pájaros en la cabeza. Unos dentro y otros, al menos uno, fuera. Pero Luis está muy enfadado porque por su culpa se ha llevado una bronca del conde y le ha puesto guardia esa noche como arresto. Además, Luis le recuerda a Jaime que Méndez les ha dicho que los árabes son muy peligrosos. De hecho ya iba su tío a enviar una patrulla para buscarle pues se temían lo peor. Jaime se ríe de él y de sus miedos. Asegura que no le va a pasar nada con esa chica. Eso enfada más todavía a Luis. Jaime se va dejando a su amigo resentido. El tío de Azahar sale al galope de Granada. Es perseguido por un numeroso grupo de los secuaces de Nasser, Visir del Rey Nazarí Boabdil, que le disparan flechas sin cesar. Nasser observa la acción desde la Torre de la Vela, en la misma Alhambra. Sin perder los nervios, fríamente, le ordena a Rapaz, su halcón, que alce el vuelo y siga discretamente al fugitivo. En un momento dado, ya lejos de la ciudad, a Amir se le va a caer un mapa que tenía bajo el ropaje. Pero justo antes de que salga volando, Amir se incorpora y alza la mano para recuperarlo, pero también en ese preciso una flecha le da justo en la espalda. Amir está gravemente herido y sin soltar el mapa, hace que su caballo corra más deprisa aún. Jinete y caballo se meten en un bosque cercano hasta llegar a esconderse tras unos árboles, logrando así despistar a sus perseguidores... pero no a Rapaz que sobrevuela fuera del bosque sin que Amir se dé cuenta. Azahar, subida sobre una almena de la Alcazaba, le está contando a Candil, no sin cierto entusiasmo, lo torpe y lo bobalicón que es ese joven cristiano. El flamenco escucha con una sonrisa sarcástica, que pone un tanto nerviosa a Azahar. De pronto ambos ven llegar el caballo de su tío Amir al poblado. Ella baja corriendo, preocupada, y se encuentra a Amir muy mal herido sobre el caballo en la plaza del pueblo. El tío se derrumba de inmediato y cae de la cabalgadura. Ella se agacha y el tío le cuenta, a duras penas, que al final sabe dónde se halla el corazón de la montaña. Azahar quiere saber más, pero Amir sucumbe sin poder decir nada más; lo único que hace es tenderle a su sobrina la mano. Azahar se fija que en la mano, en ella lleva el mismo mapa que le ha costado la vida. La joven, desconsolada, coge el mapa justo en el momento en el que llegan soldados de la guardia del padre. Sobrevolando las alturas, el halcón de Nasser sigue la escena. El flamenco es el único que se fija en el ave de Nasser. Ya dentro de la torre, Azahar intenta convencer al padre de que vaya en busca del corazón, pero el padre, harto de la insistencia de ella y de las ideas de su tío, así como dolido por la muerte de Amir, la regaña y le ordena que le deje en paz, ya que no quiere saber de todas esas estúpidas fantasías de loco, que lo único que han conseguido es acabar con la vida de su propio hermano. Nasser, en la Alhambra, está abroncando a sus soldados por haber perdido la pista de Amir y por su falta de discreción; ya que se juega mucho, entre otras cosas que se entere el rey de Granada, algo que no desea pues tarde o temprano tiene intención de derrocarle... con ayuda del diamante. En ese momento llega Rapaz, el halcón, ante el miedo de los soldados. Nasser le mira a los ojos fijamente durante unos segundos y le sonríe maliciosamente. Se crea entre ambas miradas una extraña conexión de hipnosis que deja al ave totalmente inmóvil. Nasser le repite una especie de conjuro. El ave le da toda la información que necesita acerca del paradero de Amir; es una información que sólo ve el propio Nasser. El árabe, contento, rompe la sesión de hipnosis pues ya sabe dónde está el mapa que le llevará a conseguir su objetivo. Ahora tan sólo queda hacerse con la joven Azahar. Jaime, aprovechando la oscuridad de la noche, burla la guardia de los cristianos de forma silenciosa y con mil cuidados, así como la guardia árabe que custodia la ciudadela de Antaqira. Azahar, con mucha prudencia para que nadie la oiga, está preparando un pequeño equipaje. La joven le está contando a Candil que es el momento de irse a recorrer el mundo, y que si no lo hace ahora, no lo hará nunca. Pero que antes tiene que acabar lo que su tío empezó. Jaime, furtivamente, asoma por el balcón de la habitación sin que ella se dé cuenta. Durante un rato, sonriente, se queda observando cómo ella hace el equipaje. El flamenco sobrevuela a Jaime y éste intenta espantarlo; le tiene cierta manía después de su primer encuentro. El escándalo que montan los dos logra que Azahar descubra a Jaime. No puede por menos que regañarle de nuevo, ya que no quiere ser descubierta. Jaime, ya molesto por tanta bronca, quiere que ella reconozca que al menos ha sido valiente por llegar hasta ella. Azahar lo niega y se burla, pero cuando él no la ve, ella sonríe satisfecha y le guiña un ojo al flamenco. Volviendo a su papel de dura, le exige a Jaime, ya que le ha venido que le ayude a salir de allí. Jaime quiere saber a dónde van, pero ella por ahora contesta con evasivas. Jaime, que está enamorado, la sigue sin plantearse más. Una vez han conseguido salir de Antaqira, Jaime y Azahar, montados en sus caballos y con la compañía del flamenco, intentan traspasar las líneas cristianas para ir a Granada. Luis, que está de patrulla por el arresto del conde, ve a la pareja burlar la guardia cristiana. Cuando va a dar la voz de alarma, Jaime le ve y, antes de seguir su huida, le hace un gesto con la mano para que guarde silencio. Luis duda por un instante si descubrir a Jaime, pero decide ir a hablar con Méndez -total, Jaime sólo le da problemas-. Luis le cuenta a Méndez que ha visto a su amigo ir hacia el otro lado de la frontera, hacia la ciudad de Granada. Méndez al oír semejante noticia sonríe con malicia, pues ya tiene la justificación que esperaba. Méndez está aconsejándole al conde que Jaime debe ser arrestado por desobediencia pero que antes, y para evitar que sea capturado y torturado por los árabes, se debería hacer una ofensiva y atacar a los árabes con todas las tropas disponibles. El Conde se lo piensa y en lugar de hacer caso de lo que le sugiere Méndez, opta por ordenarle que vaya en busca, de forma discreta, de su sobrino. Si es necesario, deberá pedir ayuda al rey de Granada para evitar un derramamiento de sangre inútil. Para Méndez, el negociar con un árabe no le hace ninguna gracia y le resulta hasta ofensivo. Cuando Méndez se va a ir, el Conde le dice a que pone en sus manos la vida de Jaime, que es como un hijo para él. Méndez, irónicamente, le contesta que lo cuidará también como si fuera su propio hijo, pero la mirada del capitán dice todo lo contrario. Azahar y Jaime siguen caminando por entre el bosque. Jaime, que sospecha que van directos a Granada, territorio árabe, quiere saber más acerca de lo que van a hacer. Azahar nada le dice. Jaime protesta, pues ya que se está jugando el cuello quiere saber el motivo. Azahar le contesta con evasivas y dudando de su valentía. Eso le llega a Jaime al alma... y al orgullo. En ese momento se planta y jura no moverse hasta que ella le cuente toda la verdad; de lo contrario se da media vuelta y la deja sola. Azahar, que ve que Jaime no bromea, entiende que debe contar lo que pretende hacer, así que se tranquiliza y mirándole a los ojos, le explica a su acompañante toda la historia del corazón de la montaña. Jaime no se cree ni media, incluso la mira con condescendencia, como si estuviera loca, pero ve que ella sí se cree lo que está diciendo, y que necesita su ayuda, así que eso le es suficiente para ayudarla. Así que ambos siguen adentrándose en territorio árabe. Méndez junto a su grandullón soldado, está llegando a Granada, ciudad que se ve al fondo. En ese momento, una patrulla árabe sale a su encuentro. En medio de cierta tensión, y revolviéndosele las tripas a Méndez, asegura que va con la única intención de negociar con el rey de Granada. Azahar y Jaime llegan al Albaicín. A lo lejos se ve ya la Alhambra, y así se lo hace saber Azahar a Jaime. Jaime repara en que va vestido como cristiano en territorio árabe. Azahar, con decisión, mete a Jaime en un rincón y le dice que espere. Jaime hace caso. Azahar se va y vuelve al rato con ropa bajo el brazo. Le dice a Jaime que se desnude. Jaime, se queda cortado a la vez que sorprendido por las palabras de Azahar. Ella, al darse cuenta de lo que ha dicho, se sonroja y con cierto aire le arroja la ropa a la cara. Azahar se da media vuelta y se aleja del rincón. Jaime termina riendo. Méndez está en el salón de los Embajadores con su patrulla. Está maldiciendo porque odia a los árabes y va a tener que negociar con ellos por culpa de un niñato como Jaime. En ese momento le recibe Nasser, justificando la ausencia del rey y presentándose como visir. Se miran con tensión. Méndez cuenta que Jaime, el sobrino del Conde, se ha fugado con una joven árabe. Nasser enseguida sabe que es esa joven la que tiene el mapa. Nasser descubre que Méndez no simpatiza con el joven cristiano, y eso le da una idea para conseguir llevar a cabo su plan. Nasser invita a dar un paseo a Méndez por la Alhambra, pues quiere hablar con él de algo “extra oficial”, algo que no sería conveniente que oyesen otros oídos. Méndez, aunque reacio, accede escuchar al árabe. Jaime ahora va vestido de árabe, aunque le queda corta la ropa. Mientras van cruzando el río Darro por el puente del Rey Chico, no deja de protestar por lo ridículo que se siente. Azahar ríe disimuladamente ante su aspecto. Suben por la Cuesta de los Chinos con cierto sigilo. Justo donde la torre de los Picos Azahar se detiene. Mira el mapa y busca con la mirada por los alrededores de la torre. Al final encuentra un resorte determinado con una forma muy peculiar. Lo aprieta y se abre, bajo los pies de Jaime, una pequeña compuerta camuflada con el terreno que hace que el muchacho caiga dentro. Azahar baja por el hueco e inmediatamente la compuerta se cierra. Sus caballos quedan allí mientras Candil alza el vuelo intentando seguirlos. De pronto, en el cementerio real, dentro de la Alhambra, se abre una tumba y aparecen Azahar y Jaime. Allí es donde está la salida del pasadizo que han tomado antes. Según el mapa de Amir, Azahar comenta que deben ir hasta los baños situados en el Palacio de Comares. Jaime no entiende qué es eso de “baños”, y es ahora Azahar quien se ríe de la ignorancia del cristiano. Jaime no ve la gracia. A escondidas inician su camino hacia dicho palacio. En la Sala de los Reyes Nasser le comenta a Méndez que él se encargará de los muchachos mientras que lo que debe hacer Méndez es decirle al conde que Hamet, padre de Azahar, tiene prisionero a Jaime; de esta forma sus tropas atacarán a los árabes. Méndez quiere saber por qué tiene tanto interés en provocar una guerra. Nasser sonríe y dice que de esa forma tendrá a los suyos ocupados, y podrá llevar a cabo un plan muy concreto y sin que le vigilen. Méndez da por hecho que es por temas políticos, pero sea lo que sea le da igual pues odia tanto a los árabes que cualquier justificación es buenas para atacarles. Pone como única condición que terminen con el chico, que lo maten. Nasser asegura que así se hará. En el patio de los leones, se asoman las cabezas de Azahar y Jaime tras un par de columnas. Azahar cuenta hasta tres en voz muy baja y salen corriendo los dos cruzando el patio en dirección hacia la sala de enfrente. Justo en ese momento, Méndez, al salir de la Sala de los Reyes, ve a Jaime cruzar el patio y da la voz de alarma. Nasser le dice que no se preocupe, sus hombres se encargaran de ellos, que él ahora no debe perder tiempo e ir al conde para decirle lo que han acordado. Los soldados salen tras los chicos y Méndez y Nasser se dan un apretón de manos mientras se sonríen maliciosamente. El flamenco, que volando seguía a los muchachos, huye nervioso y preocupado del lugar. Llegan los chicos hasta los baños, perseguidos por los soldados de Nasser. Antes de ser atrapados consiguen dar con el ladrillo que abre la compuerta de una profunda gruta. Justo en el momento en el que entran los soldados, la compuerta se cierra. Los soldados buscan como locos el resorte. Los chicos corren por un pasadizo muy oscuro. No hay tiempo que perder y aunque se den golpes, no deben detenerse. Es cuestión de tiempo el que encuentren los soldados la forma de entrar. Los soldados, efectivamente, encuentran el resorte y abre la compuerta de la gruta y entran a toda velocidad. Jaime y Azahar siguen corriendo. Una bandada de murciélagos levantan el vuelo haciendo que los chicos vean menos todavía. Azahar está a punto de caer por un precipicio, pero la mano de Jaime la coge justo a tiempo. Jaime cada vez está más harto de esta aventura en la que no cree. Fruto de los nervios empieza a decir que no merece la pena que arriesguen su vida sólo por una leyenda. Azahar le pide que confíe en ella, que ya están muy cerca de lo que buscan. Poco a poco, con la discusión, van subiendo el volumen de voz. Los soldados se detienen en un cruce de galerías, y escuchan. Oyen los gritos de los chicos y toman esa dirección. Los chicos llegan hasta una enorme gruta donde se encuentra el corazón sobre el que caen unos rayos de luz del sol que llegan hasta las profundidades por un juego de piedras reflectantes que hay en las paredes desde la superficie. La luminosidad es repartida por toda la cueva en forma de haces. Azahar y Jaime quedan maravillados con lo que ven. Jaime por fin cree en la historia y le pide perdón a Azahar por dudar de ella. Azahar, por su parte, ahora duda si debe coger lo que tanto ha deseado. En esos momentos escuchan a sus perseguidores. Azahar está ensimismada por la belleza del diamante y los rayos de luz. Se ha quedado inmóvil. Jaime, con decisión, coge el diamante sin perder un segundo y se lo guarda a Azahar en la mochila que lleva. Justo en ese preciso instante el juego de reflejos se rompe y, al irse retirando los rayos de luz, la sala se empieza a quedar a oscuras. Es también en ese preciso segundo cuando, escuchan silbar por encima de sus cabezas un par de flechas, Jaime se da cuenta de la presencia de los soldados árabes. Seguro de sí mismo, totalmente transformado, Jaime desenvaina la espada y hace frente a los recién llegados mientras protege con su cuerpo a Azahar. La sala ahora sólo está iluminada únicamente con las antorchas de los soldados. Nasser aparece tras los soldados y les ordena a los jóvenes que se rindan, que le entreguen el diamante. Azahar se da por vencida, y por no poner más en peligro la vida de Jaime, va a obedecer. Pero Jaime se lo impide. Le ordena que busque una salida mientras él mantiene a raya a los soldados. Comienza una lucha de espadas en la que se demuestra la superioridad técnica del joven. Azahar da con una pequeña abertura de la que sale un estrecho puente de madera, muy viejo que apenas aguanta el peso de una persona. Azahar no sabe qué hacer. Jaime lo tiene claro. Debe irse por el puente y ponerse a salvo mientras él sigue luchando. Azahar duda, pero la orden tajante de Jaime la decide a salir corriendo por el puente; además, para que ella se vaya más convencida, el joven le asegura que él irá inmediatamente detrás. Azahar sale corriendo, y mientras cruza a toda velocidad ve a Jaime luchar a brazo partido contra los soldados de Nasser. Una vez que Azahar a llegado al otro extremo, grita a Jaime que ya puede cruzar él. Jaime la oye y empieza a cortar las cuerdas del puente para que no la sigan a ella. Azahar grita que no lo haga pero ya es tarde; el puente cae en el abismo. Azahar echa una última mirada a Jaime, que en ese instante alza las manos ante sus enemigos en señal de rendición. Cuando Azahar va a iniciar su camino a la superficie, Nasser, totalmente rabioso, le grita que si quiere ver vivo a su amigo deberá reunirse con ellos en la torre de la Vela, y traer el diamante para intercambiarlo. Méndez le está diciendo algo al Conde que no oímos. En ese momento el Conde se pone en pie, muy enfadado. Mientras, Méndez, a espaldas del conde, se frota las manos satisfecho. El Conde sale al patio de armas con decisión, observa por un segundo a sus soldados realizar sus tareas cotidianas de forma relajada. Al acercársele el teniente Ramírez, el Conde le ordena que forme inmediatamente a las tropas para la batalla. Azahar sale por fin de la montaña. Se encuentra sola y nerviosa, no sabe qué hacer. Ella piensa en alto, duda si entregar el corazón y salvarle la vida a Jaime o devolver el corazón a la montaña y perder a un amigo que ha confiado en ella y que le ha salvado la vida. De pronto oye la voz de su tío. Mira para todos los lados pero no ve a nadie. La voz le plantea su dilema en forma de acertijo que Azahar no tarda en resolver; debe salvar a su amigo. Desde lo alto de la Torre de la Vela se ven salir de la Alhambra una columna de tropas del Rey Boabdil que van a unirse a las del padre de Azahar. Nasser comenta lo hermoso que es un desfile militar, sobre todo si van a aniquilar a los cristianos. “¿Lo ves bien?”, pregunta con ironía Nasser a Jaime, que está colgando de una cuerda fuera de la torre, custodiado por el secuaz de Nasser. Jaime quiere saber por qué tienen que enfrentarse ambos ejércitos, por qué no pueden vivir ambas culturas en paz. Nasser no para de reír ante tanta “bondad” y no entiende porque se pone tan nervioso Jaime, si él no va a ver el enfrentamiento pues su amiga no va a venir con el corazón y él tendrá que matarle. Nasser ríe estruendosamente. Jaime insiste en que no habrá sangre porque llegarán a entenderse ambas partes. Nasser ríe de nuevo por su ingenuidad, pues no cree que eso suceda, ya que ambos jefes están cegados por el odio pues creen que sus oponentes son los responsables de la muerte de sus seres queridos; es decir su sobrino y su hija respectivamente. Jaime se revuelve en su cuerda. Una voz femenina le ordena a Nasser que suelte a Jaime. Nasser se da la vuelta y se encuentra con Azahar. El árabe ríe ante la exigencia de Azahar. Antes quiere que le dé el diamante. Azahar se lo da ingenuamente y Nasser se ríe de ella mientras ordena a su soldado que la aprese. Él, mientras, va a soltar “lastre”. El soldado va a ir a por la chica cuando de pronto, sin saber de donde, aparece Candil en compañía de Alfajor. El lince salta sobre Nasser, que del susto deja caer el corazón al vacío. El diamante empieza a caer torre abajo. El flamenco vuela veloz hacia el diamante. Nasser, lleno de rabia, consigue quitarse de en medio al lince y cortar la cuerda que sujeta a Jaime. Jaime cae. Azahar grita. El flamenco consigue coger con el pico el corazón de la montaña en el preciso instante en que cae Jaime sobre él, haciendo que se trague el diamante. El secuaz grandullón, recuperado de la confusión, va a coger a Azahar, pero ella empieza a bajar las escaleras a toda prisa. El lince va tras ella haciendo caer al soldado. El flamenco a duras penas consigue llegar al suelo con Jaime encima. Nasser jura y perjura mientras sale corriendo tras los chicos. Éstos se reúnen en la puerta de la torre y salen corriendo a lomos de sus caballos Gallardo y Azofaifa, el lince logra acomodarse de un salto en la montura de Azahar mientras que el flamenco les sigue volando con un gracioso tic por lo que acaba de tragarse. Jaime le dice a Azahar que deberán darse prisa antes de que se inicie la batalla entre sus familias. Las dos tropas están frente a frente en el valle de la montaña. La tensión se respira. Los hombres miran al frente con odio. Los caballos se mueven intranquilos. Todo es silencio, sólo se oye algún relincho suelto, el ruido de las armaduras y de las armas al acomodarse. Azahar y Jaime corren con sus caballos. Comentan que no les va a dar tiempo a llegar para impedir la lucha. Jaime tienen una idea: deben ir a lo alto de la montaña para que sus familias los vean y evitar así la batalla. Sin detenerse, ambos toman un camino alternativo. El flamenco les sigue por los aires. Nasser y el soldado grandullón galopan tras ellos. También toman el camino de la montaña. El halcón les sigue por los aires. Gustavo planea con sus generales la estrategia a seguir. Con la primera orden, la infantería saldrá al ataque. La caballería deberá aguardar. Son conscientes de la masacre que va a suponer ese ataque entre sus filas, pero es el único lenguaje que entienden los árabes. Jaime y Azahar llegan a la falda de la montaña rocosa. Dejan los caballos y sin perder un instante empiezan a trepar. Hamet, prepara con sus generales la estrategia. Deberán aguantar lo más posible el primer ataque, para luego sorprender al enemigo por detrás con tropas descansadas. Deben estar preparados para sufrir innumerables bajas, pero no hay más remedio; es lo único que entienden los cristianos Azahar y Jaime siguen subiendo. Están cerca de la cima. Nasser, que ha dejado atrás a su patoso secuaz, está muy cerca de ellos. Les va a dar alcance enseguida. El flamenco, que sigue volando sobre los chicos, ve justo a tiempo cómo el halcón se abalanza sobre él. Al intentar huir, como no mira, se golpea con un árbol con tal fuerza que termina escupiendo el diamante. Éste cae justo en las manos de Jaime en medio de toda la tensión, que lo recibe con cierta asquerosidad. El flamenco y el halcón se enzarzan en una persecución por los aires que les va alejando de la cima de la montaña. Gustavo, mientras, levanta la mano para dar la orden. Sus tropas no le quitan ojo. Hamet alza la mano. Sus tropas esperan impacientes. Todo está en silencio. El conde va a mover la mano cuando ve algo en el aire. El flamenco de Azahar está luchando con el halcón de Nasser y le pasa al conde justo por las narices. Toda la tropa mira extrañada. El padre de Azahar también ve las aves, ahora, el flamenco se dirige hacia él pasándole por delante en un vuelo patoso pero que a la vez consigue esquivar los ataques del halcón. Como puede el flamenco dirige su vuelo a la cima de la montaña. Ambos bandos siguen el vuelo de las aves y ven en la montaña, de pronto, a Jaime y Azahar, que llegan a la cima. Candil, con su objetivo conseguido, desciende hasta unos matorrales, Rapaz lanza su ataque hacía él, pero en ese mismo instante salta Alfajor y se pone delante de Candil, el halcón sólo puede desviar su ataque unos centímetros para no colisionar contra el lince, con tan mala suerte que termina empotrándose contra una chumbera repleta de higos, la fuerza con la que impacta hace que su cabeza sobresalga por el otro lado, con un higo como bozal en su pico. Las tropas son testigos de cómo Nasser llega tras los muchachos desenvainando su espada. Méndez, maldiciendo, y sin que el conde se percate, sale de la formación con su caballo. Luis, que está próximo a él, le observa y también sale de la formación con sigilo. Los dos jefes bajan sus respectivas manos muy despacio, para que nadie mal interprete el movimiento. Nasser está amenazando en ese momento a los chicos. Quiere que le devuelvan el diamante. Ellos se niegan. Aseguran que lo van a dejar en el sitio donde debe de estar. Méndez, a escondidas, llega a las faldas de la montaña, procurando no ser visto ni por las tropas ni por los chicos, y apunta con el mosquetón a Azahar. Luis también está escondido unos pocos metros de Méndez. En el preciso instante en el que Nasser va a atacarles, Méndez dispara y Luis le grita a Jaime para avisarle mientras le lanza un cuchillo a Méndez, que le da en el hombro. Jaime, avisado por el grito de Luis, abraza casi instintivamente a Azahar, para evitar que la alcance el proyectil, resultando él herido leve en el hombro. Ambos chicos caen abrazados del risco al vació. Nasser queda sorprendido. Los ejércitos también se quedan mudos al ver lo acontecido. El velo de Azahar queda colgando de un risco. Nasser no sabe qué hacer. Cuando mira a lo lejos se encuentra con ambos ejércitos mirándole. Jaime y Azahar caen dentro de la gruta por medio de una serie de conductos parecidos a toboganes de piedra hasta llegar al desfiladero de una amplia cámara bajo la cual hay un oscuro y profundo precipicio. Se levantan corriendo cruzando, el único camino posible, un estrecho puente de roca que comunica el desfiladero con una roca hueca situada en un pilar en el centro del abismo. Una vez atraviesan el puente entran en una sala en la que diversos canales confluyen en un relieve situado en el centro de la sala. Gustavo subido a su caballo llega hasta donde está Luis aprisionando a Méndez, el cual está tendido en el suelo herido. El Conde mira con desprecio a Méndez, mientras lo arrestan el teniente Ramírez y un soldado. El Conde, entonces, con una partida de hombres, entre los que se encuentra Luis, se une en las faldas de la montaña al padre de Azahar y a unos cuantos soldados que le acompañan. Deciden ir a buscar a la pareja juntos. Inician la subida a la montaña a la vez que unos soldados se llevan al secuaz de Nasser. Jaime y Azahar llegan hasta el relieve, este tiene una oquedad con la silueta del corazón que llevan. Se miran, se sonríen y ambos lo colocan en su sitio. De pronto, como si resucitase la montaña, la gruta tiembla y se llena de una rojiza luz que desprende el corazón en forma de haces. Justo en ese momento, y ante el asombro de todas las tropas, sienten bajo sus pies como se produce un ruidoso terremoto que les hace temblar los pies, como si la montaña se desperezara de un largo sueño. Una piedra que se desprende por el temblor llega a apresar la pierna de Nasser cuando huía como una serpiente. Ese mismo temblor hace que la cueva que había bajo los muchachos quede cerrada por enormes rocas, arrastrando también cierta vegetación, de forma que una vez terminado el temblor es como si allí nunca hubiera existido gruta alguna, sobre la vegetación cae el velo de Azahar. Las tropas conjuntas encuentran a Nasser, que sigue aprisionado por la piedra. El padre de Azahar ordena su detención inmediatamente. Ambos jefes comentan lo necios que han sido por dejarse influenciar por gentes como Méndez y Nasser. Siguen la búsqueda de los chicos. El halcón de Nasser ha conseguido liberarse de la chumbera, pero camina dolorosamente mientras que con las puntas de sus alas va quitándose las numerosas espinas que tiene clavadas por el cuerpo. Buscan por la cima pero nada encuentran. Durante un tiempo recorren palmo a palmo la montaña pero nada. Se dan por vencidos y, tristes y cabizbajos se empiezan a retirar. Luis queda arriba. Se resiste a perder a su amigo. Busca en el horizonte. Las tropas se alejan. De pronto ve cómo el flamenco emerge de entre los matorrales. Eso le anima. Busca con la mirada en el lugar de donde ha surgido el ave; es la orilla de la laguna Fuente de Piedra. Unos matorrales junto a la laguna se mueven con las ligeras formas de dos siluetas. Unas sombras se alejan hasta desaparecer. Luis sonríe satisfecho. El flamenco le guiña un ojo con complicidad a Luis mientras sobrevuela la ladera de la orilla. Candil divisa a Alfajor y se le acerca, cuando va a llegar a su altura, ve que éste está cortejando a una lince. No puede por menos que reírse y alejarse volando. Pero según se va, aparece tras la pareja una camada de tres pequeños linces. Días después el bullicio de gentes y mercancías del puerto de Palos hace que nadie se fije en nadie en concreto. Un señor, con pergaminos bajo el brazo, anda preguntando por los armadores Martín y Alonso Pinzón a algunos marineros, que esperan en la cola de un reclutamiento de marineros para un barco que está a punto de partir de a las Indias, al girarse tropieza sin querer con un marinero que acaba de salir de la mesa donde se inscriben los marineros, esto hace que se le caigan los pergaminos. Ambos se agachan a recogerlos. La otra persona es Jaime disfrazado de marinero. Ambos se disculpan de forma educada. El señor tiene acento italiano. Cuando terminan de recogerlos cada uno sigue su camino. Jaime va hasta Azahar que, tras unos toneles y disfrazada también de marinero, anda pintándose la cara a modo de barba. Jaime con dos inscripciones de papel en la mano le dice que ya está conseguido. Se van a las indias. Un enorme buque está anclado en el puerto. Una cola de marineros va embarcando poco a poco, mientras que dan su nombre al contramaestre que hay en la embarcación. Jaime y Azahar llegan ante la mesa y dan sus nombres. Azahar da uno falso y con voz grave. El contramaestre le observa y se ríe. Le dice que poco va a aguantar un chico tan débil pero que si es lo que quiere. Los dos muchachos pasan definitivamente. Se sonríen satisfechos mientras se oye la voz de zarpar. El navío zarpa, Candil se posa sobre un mástil, los muchachos sonríen mientras atan cabos del barco. Al atardecer los dos están en el palo mayor, en la torre de vigía, se miran enamorados Candil los mira con admiración, cuando van a besarse le entra el nervio al flamenco por que los puedan ver los demás marineros y vuela hacia ellos sin mirar pero tapándolos con sus alas. El barco se aleja hacía el horizonte, dirección al sol que parece descansar sobre el mar. FIN	Translation - English “THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAIN” STORYLINE An impressive sand storm constantly lashes the desert. Through the blizzard, the silhouette of a man riding a horse as well as he can, can be seen. That man slowly gets closer and his features begin to be distinguishable. It’s Amir, young Azahar’s uncle. Behind him, a group of around one hundred horsemen following him without stopping can be made out. Suddenly Azahar’s voice is heard recounting what is happening to Amir in the desert. Underneath the stars, in the gardens of the Arab castle of Antiqira, at the foot of a mountain in the Andalusian Kingdom, Azahar is feeding a small lynx, whose name is Alfajor, while she continues telling him about her uncle Amir's adventures. She seems excited. The lynx listens attentively until something distracts him. He looks towards what has distracted him, and runs to hide between Azahar’s legs. At that moment, Amir’s voice is heard saying that it wasn’t as bad as all that, and that there weren’t a hundred followers, there were just three or four. Azahar looks behind her and sees Amir himself, who brings firewood to make a fire. Azahar gets excited about the visit, as she makes the most of it to repeat a thousand times that she wants to go with him to experience more adventures. Amir says that she is still very young for that. A bit annoyed, she answers him back that he’s wrong, that today she has been on an adventure and she found a lynx who she has named after the cake she likes so much. Amir laughs while to the amazement of the girl, he makes fire with a bit of gunpowder. Amir assures that looking for adventures is fine, and that they can actually be found in any place. For example, continues Amir, in those mountains, and he points to the mountain which stands in front of them with a human looking face. Amir says that even mountains, even though it sounds strange, are also living beings, and that they move so slowly, we hardly notice it. Azahar looks sceptically at her uncle, but he begins to tell her that thousands of years ago, two mountains side by side declared a deep love. From the image of the niece and her uncle, we move to the image of the interior of the two mountains, where rivers of lava run through the middle fluidly, as if they were veins. The uncle continues to recount the legend whilst images of what he is saying to his niece can be seen: in the interior of the mountains the lava flows non stop, driven by their respective hearts, while on the mountainsides the most beautiful flowers grow and the best looking animals live. They are united by the interlacing meanders of a river running between them. But the gods who dwell in the stars – continues Amir – were jealous of the love the two rocks felt and that on their mountainsides flowers more beautiful than those which were in the gardens of the temples could grow. So they decided to separate the two mountains, they made the river which united them grow, increasing its volume, gaining ground from the earth managing to dry up the flowers and making the animals abandon the place. The river ended up being converted into sea. That sea which separated them – Amir carries on while the images continue – is known today as the Mediterranean Sea, the sea between lands. One of the mountains, so desperate, held up her face and shouted to the stars for her love. But the ancient Gods didn’t only not listen to her plea, but they blew her up into a thousand pieces. It’s at that moment that a flame, with the silhouette of the mountain’s face, rises until it overlaps the mountain in front of Amir and Azahar. Azahar is open-mouthed because of the story she is hearing. Amir finishes by saying that since then, both the ambitious and romantic of these lands who believe in the legend, and there hasn’t been just a few, have tried to find the heart of that mountain, because as it cooled down it was converted into a precious diamond. Some of them search for it because of the value and power it offers to whoever possesses it and others want to return it to its home and try to revive the mountain in this way. “What would you do?” Amir asks his niece. Azahar looks at the mountain with sorrow and in silence. Azahar’s room is dark. On the walls and floor there are many strange objects from different far away countries. Farida, Azahar’s mother, enters the room and trips over one of the objects. She wakes her daughter up, and tells her off and tells her to clear everything up immediately. Azahar protests, because they are presents which her uncle has brought her from every one of his trips. Suddenly, the sound of horse’s hooves are heard, along with Amir’s voice calming the horse down. Hamet, Azahar’s father and Valí de Antaqira, is also heard saying to his brother not to do anything crazy and not to go, that relationships with the Christians aren’t very good and that something might happen to him. Azahar runs to the window and opens it. She sees her uncle finish packing some luggage onto one of the saddles, while he says to his brother that he shouldn’t worry, nothing will happen to him. Azahar’s father is worried because his brother doesn’t stop fantasising and looking for trouble on each and every one of his trips. Azahar, from her window, goes to ask her uncle something, but he shakes his head before she can say anything. The girl is sad and protests at not being able to accompany him. Amir, upon seeing the sad face of his niece, takes out from one of his breeches two small precious stones, which fit together perfectly, and smiling he throws them to her winking. While the girl looks at them, Amir gets on his horse to go. Azahar says goodbye to him with a big smile on her face, and wishes him luck. The sun which illuminates Azahar takes us to Toledo, where a young boy, Jaime, is confronting a friend, Luis, in an entertaining wooden sword fight through the city’s streets, alarming merchants and passers-by. The motive for the fight; defence of the throne of his young cousin Elena, who is sitting on a hay wagon having fun watching them fight. On another covered wagon, splitting his sides with laughter is a large guard enjoying the kids’ fight. Through the window the inside of the tower can be seen, where there is a group of people talking around a table with a map. That group of people includes Jaime’s uncle, Gustavo, the Count of Fuenterroble, his advisers and other trustworthy men. They have in front of them a map showing the Kingdom of Castilla and Aragón, after Alfonso V´s renunciation of the throne of Castilla, and the proclamation of Isabel I as queen of Castilla, and the border which separates the lands of the Nazarí Kingdom of Granada. While the noise of the boys’ fight outside can still be heard, Gustavo comments to his men that he is hoping that the Kings, in reward for the help he gave them during the struggle against Alfonso V´s supporters, will award him with a large break for his people and new possessions. Méndez, a tall and heavily-built gentleman, and captain of the Count’s forces, recommends to his leader, that what he should do is return to the border of the Nazarí Kingdom of Granada and fight against the Muslims so that the Kings reward him with new territories, but the Count, a lot more prudent, prefers not to have to enter into new struggles and to await orders. Jaime is still fighting fiercely against his friend Luis, when he notices something strange about a man who the guard allows to enter inadvertently in the city. Under his camouflaging cloak, he sees the man is wearing Arab slippers. Jaime gets rid of Luis with great difficulty, leaving him sitting on the floor with a net over his head with some vegetables in it, and he begins to follow the supposed Arab spy through the streets. Jaime provokes even more chaos, especially when he mounts his horse, Gallardo, who although he seems beautiful and willing, honours his name and is actually quite fearful and jumpy. The noise Jaime is making outside is unsupportable in the interior of the tower. The Count asks Méndez to do something about it. Méndez, frustrated because the Count hasn’t followed his advice, goes to the window and shouts to the big clumsy guard, who is still having a great time looking at the rumpus caused by Jaime. Méndez orders him to stop the fight however he can. The big guy runs after Jaime without waiting a second. Meanwhile, in Jaime’s chase, the horse is suffering from bad vertigo, making everything much noisier, as the boy doesn’t give up and makes Gallardo go up the battlements and over the roofs of the city to follow the strange man, creating chaos. When Jaime nearly has the Arab cornered, he manages to see part of his face; it turns out it’s Amir. Jaime sees that the spy smiles at him kindly and that disconcerts him. Even more so when he winks at him as a signal of complicity. Suddenly, Méndez’s big guy appears, one hundred per cent obedient, and grabs Jaime so that he is still, meaning that the spy escapes. In the end, in a masterly and very agile manoeuvre, Jaime gets the clumsy guard off of him and manages to shout out a warning to a group of soldiers to capture the Arab. They go after him but it’s a second too late, and the Arab has disappeared as if by magic. In the weapons patio Jaime tells his uncle, the Count and his wife Mercedes, that he realised because of the slippers and that if he has escaped it was Méndez’s guard’s fault. Méndez, very angry with the boy, tries to dodge the issue. The Count, who at the beginning listens with a serious face about the scandal caused, bit by bit starts smiling and finally admits the admiration and pride he feels for his nephew. This is something which Méndez cannot listen to because of pure envy, but he says nothing. The Count, once everything is clear, lets the boy go back and play with his friend Luis. While the boy is playing, the Count confesses to his wife the happiness he feels at having taken Jaime in after the death of his parents. They both agree on the affection they feel towards the boy. Amir, as if he were a shadow, is next to a bookshelf full of books, from which he takes one and puts it under his robes. Jaime and his friend Luis are still emulating the soldiers in the arts of war with their wooden swords. Throughout the events and obstacles that the young Jaime does, we see him growing up and his wooden sword changes into a shiny steel one, and he becomes a handsome young man. Once he is a young man, he wins the fight he has been having with his friend Luis, who has also changed into a handsome man. Both of them go to refresh themselves when they pass underneath the balcony from which the young and beautiful Elena is leaning out. Luis looks at her fascinated. Jaime laughs at Luis because of the utterly stupid way he is looking at his cousin, as he thinks falling in love is absurd. Suddenly a messenger of the Catholic Kings bursts into the city attracting the attention of all the citizens. The messenger gets off his horse without missing a beat and runs into the tower before the watchful eyes of Jaime and Luis. In one of the rooms, the messenger reads the missive from the Catholic Kings to Gustavo and Mercedes, which requires the Count and his troops in territories near to the Arab border. This news creates a wave of happiness throughout the room, especially in Méndez, although not quite as much in Mercedes and her daughter Elena, as they know that it is going to mean the departure of their loved ones. A servant runs out of the tower and spreads the word that they are going to depart for the border. Jaime hears the news as he runs towards the interior of the tower. Once inside the room, he is wondering whether to talk to the Count or not, but it is the Count himself who gets his wishes in first and says that he wants Jaime to accompany him on his trip along with Luis. Jaime gets excited about the adventures that he and his friend are going to be able to live. Jaime runs happily towards his friend to tell him the news, expecting him to be happy also. Luis, however, confesses that he is not at all happy as he doesn’t like the idea of being separated from Elena whatsoever. Jaime doesn’t understand, as for him what’s really important is fighting against the Arabs, which is what they’ve been preparing for since they were boys. A column of men on horseback and some carriages, with Méndez leading them, is ready to leave the city. The Count says goodbye to his wife. Next to them the two young men do the same with Elena. Jaime sees that he is like a spare part in the farewell and leaves Luis and Elena alone. Jaime and Luis, one excited and the other not as much, join the column just behind the Count, but in front of Méndez, something which the captain doesn’t find very funny. The big guard goes to say something about it, but Méndez shuts him up rudely. The drums of the troops accompany the farewell and the convoy leaves the walls of the city. The convoy travels through different landscapes: they pass through old cities with Romanesque churches, they cross rivers, they walk under the flight path of pink birds, which the Count identifies as “flamingos”, they spend the night next to swamps full of mosquitoes, … until finally they arrive at their destination, a citadel with an Arab fortress surrounded by marquees and tents where people are sleeping just outside the walls. Inside nearly all the buildings have builders working on them, with wooden scaffolding all over and pulley systems as if they were cranes hanging everywhere, fixing the destruction caused by a recent battle. The appearance of the city is halfway between abandoning its Arab appearance and becoming more like a Christian one, so for example, on the minaret a church tower is being built. Precisely at the moment the convoy approaches, some workmen are lifting a cross onto the tower of the old mosque in the fortress. At the entrance to receive them is Ramírez, captain of the troops who are destined there, who hands over command to the Count. In honour of his arrival, he has arranged a grand party for that night. The Count is interested in the numerous tents he could see surrounding the city. Ramírez tells him that they are Muslims converted to Christianity, Arabs who have renounced their faith and wish to live in peace with the Christians and integrate with them. They still do not have a place for them inside the fortress. From the room where the party will be celebrated and through the windows, the silhouettes of the nearby mountains in the moonlight can be seen. Jaime and Luis go to have a look at the surroundings of the encampment with curiosity and fear. From behind the trees a shadow appears and suddenly puts a knife to Jaime’s neck. It’s Méndez. After the boys’ initial scare, Méndez explains to them that they must be on constant alert because they cannot trust any Muslim, and that these are very close. In her room, Azahar, also now a beautiful young woman is searching carefully for garments in a large chest. After picking up some head-dresses she goes towards the window where there is a funny looking flamingo half dressed up by her. Candil (Candle), the name of the flamingo because of the light which shines from its white feathers, feels ridiculous with those items of clothing. As if saved by the bell, Azahar's mother arrives, and he takes advantage of the situation to free himself of them. Farida, upon seeing the flamingo, tries to frighten him away, complaining to her daughter about the strange company she keeps. Azahar smiles arguing that Candil is her white prince. Her mother after looking at the room, and as if she has repeated it a thousand times, makes Azahar see how untidy she has it. Azahar makes excuses explaining to her that it isn’t like that, she has the things distributed and arranged according to their origin, while she starts showing and telling her where each one of them is from. Her mother, patiently, sits on the bed whilst her daughter dreams out loud of a thousand adventures with every one of the objects. Azahar finishes by hugging her mother and sitting down next to her. Azahar confesses that she feels like a caged bird and that what she really wants to do is travel and explore those places she’s heard so much about from her uncle. Her mother, despite being deferent, argues that her place is home. The next morning they depart in their column to inspect part of the troops with the Count, Jaime, Méndez and others. After a stop during which they see some Arab patrols go by, they decide to carry on but Jaime is staring at some flamingos flying overhead in a certain area. He tells his friend that he wants to go and see them and to cover him. Luis tries to stop him but Jaime takes no notice of him and he goes. He gets close to where the animals are and discovers the small lake Fuente de Piedra very close to the mountain. Extremely curious he approaches quietly, looking all around him. Faced with the stare of one of the flamingos, Jaime arrives very stealthily at the lake. He sees an Arab mare, Azofaifa, tied to a nearby tree. Gallardo, Jaime’s horse, likes the mare and neighs to attract her attention, but she takes notice of him. At that moment, Jaime sees some reeds moving and silencing his horse, he gets down. Very alert, he takes out his sword and approaches carefully and attentively looking out of the corner of his eye in all directions. Everything is in silence. When it seems he’s going to discover something between the reeds, he hears a noise just behind him; it’s the noise of Candil flapping his wings, something he does to enjoy himself and scare Jaime. Effectively, the young man is frightened; he nervously turns around and immediately screams to try to intimidate the animal. But he has the misfortune of slipping down a small hill until banging his head on a stone and losing consciousness. From between the reeds, the now older Alfajor appears, the lynx Azahar “adopted” years before. The lynx reproaches the flamingo with a glance for having gone too far with the boy. When Jaime opens his eyes, the first thing he sees, bewildered, is Azahar's face. He cannot hide his admiration for the beauty of the girl. Azahar asks him if it’s normal for him to scream upon seeing a flamingo. Jaime is still in too much pain to answer. Azahar, without saying any more, turns around and walks off. Jaime manages to sit up, thanks to the flamingo who gives him some breeze with his wings. Once he has recovered, he looks for the girl but he can’t find her. Then he sees how the flamingo flies away. He follows him with his eyes and sees him land where she is. Azahar is at that moment climbing the mountain hastily. Jaime decides to follow her without missing a beat. With great difficulty, Jaime manages to reach her. While they are walking over the mountain, he wants to know her name at all costs; he even becomes rather annoying. But Azahar ignores him. At one point, she faces him and stops him from following her. Jaime is left speechless. She carries on walking. Jaime doesn’t know what to do, but immediately decides to follow her again. When he’s about to reach her, he sees her go inside the mountain, entering through a cavern which is hardly visible from the outside. Jaime is just behind her. Azahar realises that he is following her and that makes her more nervous. He tries to make more conversation, but with no luck. Without being able to restrain herself, Azahar tells him to get lost. Jaime, disconcerted, is about to go when Azahar suddenly asks him to stay. Jaime likes that, until he realises that Azahar has changed her mind just so that he can help her move an enormous rock which is blocking her path. Before that though, Jaime wants to know her name. So that she doesn’t have to listen to him any more and to get him to help her, Azahar tells him. So, Jaime moves the rock, satisfied at having learnt her name. The path ahead of them turns out to be a cold and sinister place. Jaime asks her what she wants to do. Azahar explains that she is trying to keep this path open, the path which leads to the heart of the mountain, “do you know that mountains are also living beings?” That is enough to make Jaime start laughing. Azahar, very offended goes outside without a word, leaving Jaime behind. The young man, between laughter, follows Azahar for a long distance until he sees her enter inside the walls of Alcazaba. Jaime arrives at the encampment. Without waiting a second, he starts telling Luis how he’s met an extremely beautiful Muslim girl, whose name is Azahar and that she is rather featherbrained. But Luis is very angry because he has had a ticking off from the Count and has been put on guard duty that night, and it is all Jaime’s fault. Also, Luis reminds Jaime what Méndez told them about the Arabs being very dangerous. In fact his uncle was about to send a patrol out to look for him because they feared the worst. Jaime laughs at him and his fears. He assures him that nothing is going to happen to him with that girl. That makes Luis even more angry. Jaime leaves his friend behind feeling rather resentful. Azahar’s uncle gallops out of Granada. He is followed by a large group of Nasser’s henchmen, who is King Nazarí Boabdil's Vizier, all shooting arrows at him non stop. Nasser observes the action from the Torre de la Vela, in the Alhambra itself. Without losing his nerve, he coldly orders Rapaz, his falcon, to take flight and discretely follow the fugitive. At one point, now far from the city, Amir drops a map he had under his robes. Just before it flies away, Amir realises and holds out his hand to grab it, but in that same moment an arrow hits him right in the back. Amir is badly injured and without letting go of the map, he makes his horse run even faster. Rider and horse together enter into a nearby forest until they are hidden behind some trees, managing thus to throw their followers off scent… but not Rapaz who is flying overhead outside of the forest without Amir realising. Azahar, standing in one of Alcazaba's battlements, is telling Candil, who is not very enthusiastic, how clumsy that young nitwit of a Christian is. The flamingo listens with a sarcastic smile which makes Azahar somewhat nervous. Suddenly they both see uncle Amir's horse arrive in the village. She runs down, worried, and finds Amir very badly injured slumped over the horse in the village square. Her uncle collapses immediately and falls from the saddles. She bends down and her uncle tells her with great difficulty that he finally knows where the heart of the mountain can be found. Azahar wants to know more, but Amir succumbs without being able to say any more; the only thing he does is hold out his hand to his niece. Azahar looks at what he holds in his hand, he has the map which has cost him his life. The distressed girl takes the map right at the same moment her father’s on duty soldiers arrive. Flying high overhead, Nasser’s falcon is watching the scene. The flamingo is the only one who sees Nasser’s bird. Now inside the tower, Azahar tries to convince her father to go and look for the heart. But her father is fed up of her insistence and of her uncle’s ideas, as well as hurting from the death of Amir. He tells her off and orders her to leave him alone, as he doesn’t want to know about those stupid crazy fantasies, that the only thing they have achieved is to finish off his own brother. Nasser, in the Alhambra, is reprimanding his soldiers for losing Amir’s trail and for being so indiscrete; as a lot of things are at risk, amongst others, that the King of Granada finds out, something Nasser doesn’t want happening as sooner or later he has the intention of overthrowing him … with the help of the diamond. At that moment Rapaz, the falcon arrives, faced with the fear of the soldiers. Nasser stares into his eyes a few seconds and smiles evilly. Between the two stares a strange hypnotic connection is created, which leaves the bird completely still. Nasser repeats a kind of spell. The bird gives him all the information he needs as to the whereabouts of Amir; only Nasser himself sees this information. The Arab, content, breaks the hypnotic session as he now knows where the map which will lead him to his objective is. Now he just has to capture the young Azahar. Jaime, taking advantage of the darkness of the night passes through the Christian guard silently and extremely carefully, as with the Arab guard which has custody of the citadel of Antiqira. Azahar, very prudently so that nobody hears her, is preparing her luggage. The young woman is telling Candil that it is the moment to go and discover the world, as if she doesn’t do it now, she never will. But before she has to finish off what her uncle started. Jaime furtively appears over the balcony of her room without her realising. For a while, he watches her preparing her luggage, smiling. The flamingo flies over Jaime who tries to frighten it away; he has a certain dislike for the bird after their first meeting. The scandal they create means that Azahar discovers Jaime. She can’t even tell him off again, as she doesn’t want to be discovered. Jaime, still annoyed for such a ticking off, wants her to recognise at least that he has been brave for getting there. Azahar denies it and laughs, but when he can’t see her, she smiles satisfied and winks at the flamingo. Returning to being tough, she demands that Jaime, as he has come, helps her get out of there. Jaime wants to know where they are going, but for now she answers him evasively. Jaime, who is in love, follows her without giving it a second thought. Once they have got out of Antiqira, Jaime and Azahar on horseback and with the company of the flamingo, try to cross over the Christian lines to go to Granada. Luis, who is on patrol because of the Count’s orders, sees the couple pass the Christian guard. When he’s about to raise the alarm, Jaime sees him, and before continuing his get away, signals to him with his hand to keep silent. Luis doubts for a second whether or not to discover Jaime, but he decides to go and talk to Méndez – anyway, Jaime only gets him into trouble. Luis tells Méndez that he’s seen his friend going towards the other side of the border, towards the city of Granada. Méndez, upon hearing such news smiles evilly as he now has the justification he was waiting for. Méndez is advising the Count that Jaime should be arrested for disobedience but before that, and to avoid his capture and torture by the Arabs, they should take the offensive and attack the Arabs with all available troops. The Count thinks about it and instead of listening to Méndez's suggestion, opts for ordering him to go and search for his nephew discretely. If it’s necessary, he should ask for the King of Granada’s help to avoid useless bloodshed. For Méndez, negotiating with an Arab isn’t something he likes and it evens seems an insult. When Méndez is about to go, the Count says he has Jaime’s life in his hands, and that he is like a son for him. Méndez, ironically, answers that he will look after him as if he were his own son too, but with the look on his face the captain really means the complete opposite. Azahar and Jaime are still walking in the forest. Jaime, who suspects they are going straight to Granada, Arab territory, wants to know more about what they are going to do. Azahar doesn’t say anything. Jaime protests, as if he’s putting his neck on the line he wants to know the reason. Azahar answers him evasively and doubts his bravery. That deeply hurts him and insults his pride. At that moment, he stops dead and swears not to move until she tells him the whole truth; if not, he will turn around and leave her alone. Azahar sees that Jaime is not joking, understands that she must tell him what she wants to do, so she calms down and looking into his eyes, explains him the whole story about the heart of the mountain. Jaime doesn’t believe a word, he even looks patronizingly at her, as if she were mad, but he sees that she believes what she’s saying, and that she needs his help, so that’s all he needs to convince him. So they both continue penetrating into Arab territory. Méndez together with his big soldier is arriving at Granada, the city that can be seen in the background. At that moment, an Arab patrol comes across them. With a certain amount of tension and Méndez’s stomach turning over, he assures that their only intention is to negotiate with the King of Granada. Azahar and Jaime arrive at the Albaicin. On the horizon they can see the Alhambra, which Azahar points out to Jaime. Jaime realises that he is dressed as a Christian in Arab territory. Azahar decidedly shoves Jaime into a corner and tells him to wait. Jaime listens to her. Azahar goes and comes back a while later with clothes under her arm. She tells Jaime to get undressed. Jaime is rather embarrassed but also surprised by Azahar’s words. When she realises what she has said, she goes red, and hastily throws the clothes at his face. Azahar turns around and moves away from the corner. Jaime ends up laughing. Méndez is in the Ambassador’s Room with his patrol. He’s cursing because he hates the Arabs and he’s going to have to negotiate with them because of some kid. At that moment, Nasser receives him, justifying the absence of the King and introducing himself as Vizier. They look at each other with tension. Méndez tells him how Jaime, the Count’s nephew, has run away with a young Arab woman. Nasser knows straight away that the woman is the one who has the map. Nasser discovers that Méndez does not get on very well with the young Christian, and that gives him an idea for him to be able to carry out his plan. Nasser invites Méndez to have a walk around the Alhambra, as he wants to talk to him about something “non official”, something which wouldn’t be convenient for others to hear about. Méndez, although reluctant, agrees to listen to the Arab. Jaime is now dressed like an Arab, although the clothes are a bit short on him. While they are crossing the Darro River on the Rey Chico Bridge, he doesn’t stop protesting about how ridiculous he feels. Azahar laughs furtively about how he looks. They go up the Cuesta de los Chinos stealthily. At the Torre de los Picos Azahar stops. She looks at the map and looks at the surrounding areas of the tower. Finally she finds a spring with a rather peculiar shape. She presses it and underneath Jaime’s feet a small hatch camouflaged with earth opens and he falls in. Azahar goes down through the whole and immediately the hatch closes. Their horses stay there while Candil takes flight trying to follow them. Suddenly in the royal cemetery, inside the Alhambra, a tomb opens and Azahar and Jaime appear. That is where the exit of the passageway they took before is. According to Amir’s map, Azahar says that they should go towards the baths in the Palacio de Comares. Jaime doesn’t understand “baths” and now it is Azahar who laughs at the Christian’s ignorance. Jaime doesn’t see the funny side. Hiding, they take the path to said palace. In the Kings’ Room, Nasser tells Méndez that he’ll take care of the young couple while Méndez goes to the Count to tell him that Hamet, Azahar’s father, has taken Jaime prisoner; meaning that his troops will attack the Arabs. Méndez wants to know why he is so interested in provoking a war. Nasser smiles and says that it’ll mean his people will be busy, and he will be able to carry out a certain plan without them supervising him. Méndez assumes that it is for political reasons, but whatever the reason, he doesn’t care as he hates the Arabs so much that any justification is good enough to attack them. He says that the only condition is that they finish the boy off, that they kill him. Nasser assures him it will be done. In the Patio de los Leones, Azahar and Jaime’s heads appear behind a couple of columns. Azahar counts to three whispering and they run out crossing each other in the patio towards the room opposite. Just at that moment, Méndez leaving the Kings’ Room, sees Jaime crossing the patio and raises the alarm. Nasser tells him not to worry, his men will take care of them, that he should not waste time now and to go to the Count to tell him what they have agreed. The soldiers follow the couple and Méndez and Nasser shake hands while they smile evilly. The flamingo, who is following the couple overhead, flies off nervous and worried about the place. The couple arrive at the baths, followed by Nasser’s soldiers. Before they are trapped they manage to find the brick which opens the hatch to a deep cavern. Just as the soldiers enter, the hatch closes. The soldiers search crazily for the spring. The two of them run through a very dark passageway. There is no time to lose and although they are bashing themselves, they must not stop. It’s just a matter of time before the soldiers find a way to get in. Effectively, the soldiers find the spring and open the hatch to the cavern and enter quickly. Jaime and Azahar keep running. A colony of bats takes flight meaning that they can see even less. Azahar is just about to fall over a precipice, but Jaime’s hand reaches her just in time. Jaime is getting more and more annoyed with this adventure that he doesn’t believe in. As a result of his nerves he starts saying that it’s not worthwhile risking their lives just for a legend. Azahar asks him to trust her, that they are so close to what they are searching for. Little by little, with the argument, the volume of their voices rises. The soldiers stop at a cross section and listen. They hear the shouts of the couple and take that direction. The couple arrive at an enormous cavern where the heart is. Rays of sunlight fall upon the heart, and with the help of some reflective stones on the walls and surface the rays reach the deepest parts of the cavern. The light is spread throughout the cave in beams. Azahar and Jaime are marvelling at what they see. Jaime finally believes in the story and apologises to Azahar for having doubted her. Azahar, however, is doubting whether to grab what she has wanted so much or not. Then they hear their followers. Azahar is engrossed with the beauty of the diamond and the rays of light. She’s completely still. Jaime decisively takes the diamond without waiting a second and puts it in the bag Azahar is carrying. At that precise moment, the reflections break and as the rays of light disappear the room starts getting darker. It’s also at that precise moment that they hear a couple of arrows whistle over their heads, and Jaime realises that the Arab soldiers are also present. Very sure of himself, completely transformed, Jaime draws his sword and faces the recent arrivals while he protects Azahar with his body. The room is now only lit with the soldiers’ torches. Nasser appears behind the soldiers and orders the couple to give in, to give him the diamond. Azahar gives in, and so as not to put Jaime’s life in danger any more, is going to obey. But Jaime stops her. He orders her to find a way out while he keeps the soldiers at bay. A sword fight begins in which the technical superiority of the young man can be seen. Azahar finds a small opening from which there is a narrow wooden bridge, it’s very old and will hardly support the weight of one person. Azahar doesn’t know what to do. Jaime is sure of it. She must cross the bridge and get somewhere safe while he carries on fighting. Azahar doubts, but the strict order from Jaime makes her decide to run over the bridge; anyway, in order to convince her, he assures her that he will be right behind her. Azahar runs off, and while she’s crossing the bridge she sees Jaime fighting tooth and nail against Nasser’s soldiers. Once Azahar reaches the other side, she shouts to Jaime that he can now cross. Jaime hears her and starts cutting the ropes of the bridge so that they can’t follow her. Azahar screams for him not to do it, but it’s already too late; the bridge falls into the abyss. Azahar takes one last look at Jaime, who in that moment lifts his hands up surrendering to his enemies. When Azahar is about to begin her walk out onto the mountainside, Nasser, completely fuming, shouts that if she wants to see her friend alive she should meet them at the Torre de la Vela and bring the diamond to exchange it. Méndez is saying something to the Count that we cannot hear. At that moment, the Count stands up, very angry. Meanwhile Méndez facing away from the Count rubs his hands in satisfaction. The Count goes out to the weapons patio decisively, and watches his soldiers for a second carrying out their everyday tasks in a relaxed way. When Lieutenant Ramírez approaches him, the Count orders him to form the troops immediately ready for battle. Azahar finally comes out of the mountain. She is alone and nervous and doesn’t know what to do. She thinks out loud, doubting whether to hand over the heart and save Jaime or return the heart to the mountain and lose a friend who has trusted her and saved her life. Suddenly, she hears the voice of her uncle. She looks around everywhere but doesn’t see anybody. The voice presents her dilemma by way of a riddle which Azahar doesn’t take long to resolve; she must save her friend. From the top of the Torre de la Vela, a column of King Boabdil’s troops can be seen coming out of the Alhambra who are going to join those of Azahar’s father. Nasser says how beautiful a military parade is, especially if they are going to annihilate the Christians. “Can you see it well?” Nasser asks Jaime ironically, who is hanging from a rope outside the tower, guarded by Nasser’s henchman. Jaime wants to know why the two armies have to fight, why both cultures can’t live in peace. Nasser can’t stop laughing at such “goodness” and doesn’t understand why Jaime is so nervous, as he isn’t going to see the confrontation because his friend isn’t going to come with the heart, and he will have to kill him. Nesser laughs loudly. Jaime insists that there will be no blood shed because the two sides will end up coming to an understanding. Nasser laughs again at his ingenuousness, as he doesn’t believe this will happen, both leaders are blinded with hate as they both believe that their opponent is responsible for the death of their loved ones; that’s to say their nephew and daughter respectively. Jaime turns around on his rope. A female voice orders Nasser to let Jaime go. Nasser turns around and comes face to face with Azahar. The Arab laughs at the demand of Azahar. First, he wants her to give him the diamond. Azahar gives it to him naively, and Nasser laughs at her as he orders his soldier to capture her. He meanwhile goes to get rid of the “burden”. The soldier is about to get the girl when suddenly, without knowing where from, Candil appears accompanied by Alfajor. The lynx jumps on Nasser, who from the fright drops the heart into the void. The diamond starts to fall from the tower. The flamingo flies quickly towards the diamond. Nasser, really furious, manages to get the lynx out of the way and cuts the rope holding Jaime. Jaime falls. Azahar screams. The flamingo manages to catch the heart of the mountain with his beak at the same moment in which Jaime falls upon him, making the bird swallow the diamond. The large henchman, recovered from the confusion, goes to capture Azahar, but she begins to run down the stairs. The lynx follows behind her making the soldier fall over. The flamingo lands on the ground with great difficulty with Jaime on top of him. Nasser swears and curses whilst he runs after the pair of them. These two meet up in the door of the tower and rush off on their horses Gallardo and Azofaifa, the lynx manages to make himself comfortable after jumping onto Azahar’s saddle, while the flamingo follows them overhead with a funny clicking noise because of what he’s swallowed. Jaime says to Azahar that they should move quickly before the battle between their families starts. The two troops are face to face on the valley of the mountain. The tension can be felt in the air. The men look ahead with hatred. The horses move uneasily. Everything is silent apart from the odd neigh, the sound of their armour and the weapons as they move around. Azahar and Jaime gallop along on their horses. They say how they’re not going to have enough time to manage to stop the fight. Jaime has an idea: they must go to the top of the mountain so that their families can see them and in this way avoid the battle. Without stopping, they both take different routes. The flamingo follows them through the air. Gustavo plans the strategy they are going to follow with his generals. On the first order, the infantry will attack. The cavalry must await orders. They are conscious of the massacre the attack between the ranks is going to mean, but it’s the only language Arabs speak. Jaime and Azahar arrive at the foot of the rocky mountain. They leave their horses and without missing a beat start climbing. Hamet prepares the strategy with his generals. They must keep the first attack going as long as possible, so that they can then surprise the tired enemy troops from behind. They must be prepared to suffer numerous casualties, but there is no other way; it’s the only language Christians speak. Azahar and Jaime are still going up the mountain. They are close to the top. Nasser, who has left his clumsy henchman behind, is very close to them. He is going to reach them any minute now. The flamingo, who is still flying above them, sees the falcon just in time about to pounce on him. When he tries to escape, as he’s not looking, he crashes into a tree with such force that he ends up spitting the diamond out. It falls right into Jaime’s hands amongst all the tension, who catches it rather disgusted. The flamingo and falcon are involved in a chase through the air, which takes them away from the top of the mountain. Gustavo, meanwhile, lifts his hand to give the order. His troops don’t take their eyes off him. Hamet lifts his hand. His troops wait impatiently. Everything is silent. The Count goes to move his hand when he sees something in the air. Azahar’s flamingo is fighting with Nasser’s falcon and he passes right in front of the Count’s nose. All the troops look on surprised. Azahar’s father also sees the birds, the flamingo is now flying towards him, who passes before him in a clumsy flight but at the same time manages to dodge the falcon’s attack. As well as he can the flamingo takes his flight towards the top of the mountain. Both sides follow the birds’ flight, and suddenly see Jaime and Azahar on the mountain, who have arrived at the top. Candil, mission complete, flies down to some bushes, Rapaz goes towards him to attack, but at the same moment Alfajor jumps out and stands in front of Candil. The falcon is only able to divert his attack by a few centimetres so as not to collide with the lynx, with such bad luck that he ends up becoming embedded in a prickly pear cactus with lots of fruits on it, the force of the collision meaning his head comes out the other side with one of the fruits in his beak acting as a muzzle. The troops are witnesses of how Nasser approaches the couple from behind, drawing his sword. Méndez, swearing and without the Count realising, breaks formation along with his horse. Luis, who is near him, watches him and also breaks formation quietly. The two leaders lower their respective hands slowly, so that nobody misunderstands the movement. At that moment, Nasser is threatening the couple. He wants them to give him back the diamond. They refuse. They assure him that they are going to leave it in the place where it belongs. Méndez, hiding, arrives at the foot of the mountain, making sure he cannot be seen neither by the troops nor by the couple, and he aims his musket at Azahar. Luis is also hidden a few metres away from Méndez. At the precise moment that Nasser goes to attack them, Méndez shoots and Luis shouts to Jaime to warn him whilst throwing a knife at Méndez, which hits him in the shoulder. Jaime, warned by Luis’s shout, instinctively puts his arms around Azahar to protect her from the projectile, meaning he gets lightly injured in the shoulder. They both fall in each others arms from the cliff into the open. Nasser is surprised. The armies are also speechless after seeing the events. Azahar’s headscarf gets caught on the cliff edge. Nasser doesn’t know what to do. When he looks into the distance he sees both armies watching him. Jaime and Azahar fall into the cavern through a series of conducts similar to stone slides until they reach the gorge of a large chamber, underneath which is a deep dark precipice. They get up and run along the only possible path, a narrow rock bridge which communicates the gorge with a hollow rock on a pillar in the middle of the abyss. Once they cross the bridge they enter into a room in which different channels come together in an area of high ground in the middle of the room. Gustavo on horseback gets to where Luis is holding Méndez prisoner, who is lying on the floor injured. The Count looks at Méndez contemptuously, while the Lieutenant Ramírez and a soldier arrest him. The Count with a group of men, including Luis, meets up with Azahar’s father and some of his soldiers at the foot of the mountain. They decide to go and look for the couple together. They begin the ascent of the mountain at the same time as some soldiers take Nasser’s henchman away. Jaime and Azahar arrive at the high ground, which has a cavity with the silhouette of the heart they carry. They look at each other smiling and they put it in its place together. Suddenly as if the mountain is resuscitating, the cavern shakes and is filled with a reddish light coming from the heart in beams. Right at that moment, and before the amazement of all the troops, they feel something like a noisy earthquake under their feet, making them tremble, as if the mountain is stretching out after a long sleep. A stone which comes loose because of the tremble traps Nasser’s leg while he is running away like a snake. That same tremble closes off the cave under the couple with some enormous rocks, dragging some vegetation with it, so that once the tremble is over, it is like there has never existed any cavity. Azahar’s head-dress falls onto the vegetation. The united troops find Nasser, who is still imprisoned by the stone. Azahar’s father orders his immediate arrest. Both leaders comment about how foolish they’ve been to have let themselves be influenced by people like Méndez and Nasser. They continue the search for the couple. Nasser’s falcon has managed to free himself from the prickly pear, but walks painfully while with the extremes of his wings he removes the numerous thorns he has all over his body, They look from the top of the mountain but find nothing. For some time they search the mountain inch by inch, but nothing. They are about to give up, and sad and downcast begin to withdraw. Luis stays up at the top. He refuses to lose his friend. He looks into the horizon. The troops move away. Suddenly he sees how the flamingo emerges from the bushes. That cheers him up. He looks at where the bird has come from - it’s the edge of the lake “Fuente de Piedra”. Some bushes next to the lake move with the slight form of two silhouettes. Some shadows move away until they disappear. Luis smiles satisfied. The flamingo winks at Luis in complicity as he flies over the hillside. Candil makes out Alfajor and approaches him, but when he is about to arrive, he sees that the lynx is courting a female lynx. The least he can do is laugh and fly away. But as he goes, behind the couple appears a litter of three baby lynxes. Days after, the bustle of people and merchandise in the Palos port means nobody is really taking any notice of anything. A man, with parchments under his arms walks around asking for ship-owners Martín and Alonson Pinzón. He asks some of the sailors waiting in the queue to be recruited for a boat which is about to depart for India. As he turns around he accidentally bumps into a sailor who has just left the table where the inscription of sailors takes place, making him drop his parchments. They both bend down to pick them up. The other person is Jaime dressed up as a sailor. They both apologise politely. The man has an Italian accent. When they finish picking them up, they go on their separate ways. Jaime goes to Azahar, who behind some barrels and also dressed up as a sailor, is painting on a beard. Jaime with two paper inscriptions in his hand says that it’s all sorted. They are going to India. An enormous ship is anchored at the port. A line of sailors is embarking little by little, as they give their names to the boatswain at the embarkation. Jaime and Azahar arrive in front of the table and give their names. Azahar gives a fake one in a deep voice. The boatswain looks at her and laughs. He says that “he” won’t last long, being such a weak man but if that’s what he wants. The two of them pass onto the boat. They smile satisfied as they hear the sound of setting sail. The ship sets sail, Candil rests upon a mast, the couple smile while they tie ropes in the boat. As night falls, the two of them are in the mainmast, in the watchtower, they look at each other in love, and Candil looks at them admiringly. As they are about to kiss, the flamingo gets nervous as the other sailors can see them and so he flies towards them without looking to cover them with his wings. The boat moves into the horizon, towards the sun which seems to be resting upon the sea.

De entre la ventisca se ve la silueta de un hombre que cabalga velozmente sobre un caballo como buenamente puede. Poco a poco ese hombre se acerca y se empieza a poder distinguir sus rasgos. Es AMIR, por sus ropas y rasgos apreciamos que es árabe. Tras él, se adivina a lo lejos un numeroso grupo de jinetes que le siguen sin descanso. Voz Off (Azahar narrando) Él solo podía seguir montando su veloz caballo e intentar dejar atrás a sus más de cien perseguidores... Sec.2 Ext./Noche. Jardines de la alcazaba de Antaquira Bajo las estrellas, en los jardines de la alcazaba árabe de Antaqira, al pie de una montaña en el Reino Andalusí, AZAHAR, una niña de 10 años, sentada en una roca está dando de comer a un pequeño lince, al que llama Alfajor, mientras le sigue contando las aventuras de su tío Amir. Se la ve emocionada. AZAHAR ... pero ellos no le daban tregua y como lobos querían atraparlo. Azahar se incorpora y como si de una representación se tratara le sigue contando a Alfajor. AZAHAR ¡Oh, no! ¿que ve mi tío ante él? El camino que seguía lo cortaba un cañón, más de diez metros media. Pero, ¿que podía hacer?. Así que cogió fuerte las riendas ... El lince escucha atentamente hasta que un leve ruido le distrae. Mira hacia lo que le ha distraído y corriendo se esconde entre las piernas de Azahar. AZAHAR ... como si de un águila se tratara su caballo voló hasta, Ahora descubrimos lo que ha asustado a Alfajor, es Amir, quien permanecía escondido tras un árbol y que ahora sale hasta la luz. AMIR Je je, no fue para tanto y créeme, eran tres y bastante lentos. Azahar mira a su espalda y Amir, que trae leña para hacer un fuego. La niña entusiasmada se lanza a sus brazos. Amir suelta la leña para coger en el aire a la pequeña. AZAHAR ¡Amir! AMIR ¡Hola mi pequeña! Azahar jubilosa, AZAHAR Que alegría que ya estás aquí. AMIR Yo también soy feliz al verte. Amir deja en el suelo a Azahar y apila la leña mientras Azahar revolotea a su alrededor. AZAHAR ¿Cuánto tiempo te vas a quedar? AMIR No muchos días, pronto tengo que partir. Amir ríe mientras, ante el asombro de la niña, hace fuego con un poco de pólvora. Amir se sienta frente al fuego, Azahar corre hacia él. AZAHAR ¡Cuéntame más aventuras! Azahar se sienta en el regazo de su tío. Una gran montaña con rostro humano se alza ante ellos. AMIR Mejor aún, te voy a contar un secreto que no mucha gente conoce; Por raro que te parezca hay montañas que tienen vida propia. Azahar le mira incrédula. AMIR Hace millones de años, dos montañas que estaban juntas se profesaban un profundo amor... Del fuego sale llamitas que poco a poco van formando ríos de lava. Sec.3 Int./Noche. Cueva Montañas Títulos iniciales AMIR ... en sus interiores la lava fluía sin parar, impulsada por sus respectivos corazones, mientras que en sus laderas crecían las más bellas flores y vivían los más hermosos animales. Un río las unía y surcaba entrelazándolas. Pero los dioses que moran en las estrellas estaban celosos del amor que sentían ambas rocas y de que en sus laderas pudiesen crecer flores más hermosas que las que poblaban los jardines de los templos, así que decidieron separar ambas montañas, e hicieron crecer el río que las unía, aumentando el caudal ganando terreno a la tierra y logrando marchitar las flores y consiguiendo que los animales abandonaran el lugar. El río terminó convirtiéndose en un mar. Ese mar que los separó hoy lo conocemos como mar Mediterráneo, el mar entre tierras. Una de las montañas, llena de desesperación, alzó su rostro y gritó a las estrellas por su amor. Pero los antiguos dioses no solo no escucharon su súplica, sino que la hicieron estallar en mil pedazos. Sec.4 Ext./Noche. Jardines de la alcazaba de Antaquira Es en ese momento una llama, con la silueta del rostro de la montaña, se alza hasta solaparse con la montaña que tienen frente a ellos Amir y Azahar. Azahar está boquiabierta por el relato que está escuchando. AMIR Desde entonces, tanto los ambiciosos como los románticos de estas tierras que conocen la leyenda, tratan de encontrar el corazón de esa montaña, ya que al enfriarse éste se convirtió en un precioso diamante. Unos lo buscan por su valor y poder que ofrece a quien lo posea, y los otros para devolverlo a su lugar e intentar resurgir así la montaña. ¿Tú qué harías?. Azahar mira la montaña con pena y en silencio. Sec.5 Int./Día. Habitación de Azahar (Alcazaba) La habitación de Azahar está oscura. Por las paredes y el suelo hay muchos objetos extraños de distintos países muy lejanos. Entra FARIDA, madre de Azahar, en la habitación y tropieza con uno de los objetos. Azahar que estaba en la cama empieza a despertar. FARIDA ¡Azahar!, cuantas veces tengo que decirte que recojas todas estos trastos. Farida corre las cortinas para que entre la luz del día. A la vez Azahar bota de la cama y se estira con elegancia. AZAHAR No son tratos mamá. Son mágicos tesoros. FARIDA Tratos. No sé como dejo que tu tío te traiga tanta cosa inútil. Azahar detrás de su madre se ha puesto una extraña mascara. Farida sigue recogiendo cosas y al darse la vuelta, el corazón le da un vuelco al encontrase cara a cara con la mascara que se ha puesto Azahar. FARIDA ¡Ahhh! Azahar ríe, mientras su madre se sienta en la cama para recobrar el aliento. AZAHAR Ves no son inútiles esta es la mascara sagrada que usan el tribu Mancana para ahuyentar a los malos espíritus. Farida recobrando el aliento. FARIDA Lo que hay que ahuyentar son todas esas tonterías que te mete en la cabeza tu tío. Azahar rie a la vez que baila una graciosa danza. De pronto por la ventana se oyen unos cascos de caballo. Azahar corre a la ventana y la abre. Sec.6 Ext./Día. Patio de la Alcazaba Amir está calmando a su caballo.	Translation - English “THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAIN” Sequence 1. Exterior / Day. Desert An impressive sand storm constantly lashes the desert. Through the blizzard, the silhouette of a man riding a horse quickly as well as he can, can be seen. That man slowly gets closer and his features begin to be distinguishable. It’s AMIR, from his clothes and features we can appreciate that he is an Arab. Behind him, a group of around one hundred horsemen following him without stopping can be made out. Voice Off (Azahar narrating) He could only continue riding his fast horse and try to leave behind the hundred or more followers… Sequence 2 Exterior / Night. Llevo viviendo en españa más de 4 años, y tengo ya un nivel bilingüe. No tengo titulo en traducción, pero sí tengo una licenciatura - comercio internacional con español. Dentro de la asignatura de español, una gran parte era realizar traducciones, y era casi la mitad del examen final.
