Mellersdorf. Der Zug hielt an. Anna stieg aus, und mit ihr noch ein paar Leute, Schüler fast alle, die übers Wochenende heimkehrten. Auch eine alte Frau. Und zwei Soldaten, wahrscheinlich Urlauber.
Es begann schon zu dämmern. Der Schnee knirschte. Aus dem Bahnhofsgebäude fiel kaum Licht.
Alles war streng abgedunkelt, um den feindlichen Flugzeugen kein Ziel zu bieten. Luftschutz - ein Wort, das schon jedes Kind kannte.
Anna hasste diesen Bahnhof mit dem öden, verräucherten Wartesaal, sie hasste vor allem das trübe Licht der Deckenlampe, das alle Wartenden wie Tote erschienen ließ. Und von hier bis nach Stiegnitz waren es noch zwei Kilometer.
| Translation - English
Mellersdorf. The train stopped. Anna got out, and with her a few other people, almost all school children who were coming home for the weekend. Also an old woman. And two soldiers, probably on leave.
Dusk was already falling. The snow crunched. Hardly any light fell from the station buildings.
There was a strictly enforced blackout, so as not to offer any target to the enemy aeroplanes. Air-raid defence – words that every child knew now.
Anna hated the station with the desolate, smoky waiting room; above all she hated the bleak light of the ceiling lamps which made everyone waiting there look like corpses. Every Saturday afternoon she arrived here, and she left again from here every Sunday evening. And from here to Stiegnitz was still another two kilometres.

I have recently completed the MA in Literary Translation at UEA and have been working as a freelance translator. I specialise in translation for children and young people as well as crime and other contemporary fiction. In non-fiction, my interests include history, politics and linguistics.
I also translate a wide range of general and non-scientific texts and correspondence, especially "de-coding" German reference letters, and can provide reader's reports and book reviews.
Publications include the young adult novels Red Rage by Brigitte Blobel, jointly published in Autumn 2007 by Allen & Unwin (Australia) and Annick Press (Canada), and Traitor by Gudrun Pausewang, published in August 2004 by Andesen Press. Non-fiction includes A Great Artist One Day: Franz Kafka as a Pictorial Artist Vitalis, 2006, while my most recent publication is How Mommy met Daddy, a picture book to be published in 2008 by North-South Books, New York.
