Exploring the mechanism by which laparoscopic ovarian diathermy induces ovulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Serum inhibin B levels do not change in response to laparoscopic ovarian diathermy (LOD) in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), investigators show.
Some recent reports have indicated that inhibin B concentrations are elevated in women with PCOS compared with healthy women and that they normalize after LOD, yet the evidence is inconclusive, the researchers comment.
Lead author [author's name], from [Institution's name] in the UK, and colleagues therefore analyzed blood samples in 50 anovulatory women with PCOS before and after LOD.
Median pre-operative inhibin B concentrations were 110 pg/ml, and this did not change significantly after LOD, at 106 pg/ml, although 39 of the women ovulated after the procedure.
Noting that some studies have found that inhibin B levels only change as a result of LOD in non-obese patients, the investigators conducted further subanalyses in non-obese and obese women with PCOS, but these revealed no significant changes in inhibin B levels after LOD.
