The cathode-ray tube in the receiver performs the opposite function to the camera tube in the transmitter, converting the electrical signal into an optical image. Fig. 1 shows in outline the action of the cathode-ray tube, where, for the moment, the deflecting and focusing arrangements are omitted. The electrical signal, which represents the picture, is applied to the control electrode, which functions in a manner similar to that of the control grid in a tube. The signal causes the potential of the control electrode to vary about a mean level, and as this goes more negative, it reduces the intensity of the electrode to vary about a mean level, and as this goes more negative, it reduces the intensity of the electron beam, with a resulting reduction in the brightness of the spot formed on the fluorescent screen. Likewise, as it goes less negative, it increases the brightness of the spot on the screen.
